Hera's explicitly stated to be the most beautiful of all the goddesses. Examples are numerous enough that I needn't post them here.

Haha, maybe I should post a thread explaining the things that people always get wrong about the appearance of the greek gods. Like that Zeus has black hair, not silver. Or that Aphrodite wears blue, not pink. Or that Poseidon does NOT have a fish-tail. Or that Hephaistos is supposed to be lame in BOTH legs, not just one.

I never actually thought Zues had silver hair. Aphrodite emerged from pink foam, right? That kinda made me think her color was pink. Poseidon *pause for facepalm* the dude goes on land on numerous occasions. The fight with Athena about patron God/Goddess of Athens, fraking every solstice when they have meetings on Olympus. What do people think, he sits in a fishtank? As for Hephestus, the whole throwing off Olympus thing kind gives away that he would be lame pretty much everywhere.

That probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Even the book I have on Artemis claims she's the Goddess of the Moon. I think a lot of people got the idea from Roman mythology and traced it back partially to Greek Mythology and decided they must be the god and goddess of the sun and moon. I"m not sure if that's it or not. I'm always interested in learning more about Greek Mythology.

Well Apollo and Artemis are Primary Gods right? Most people haven't ever heard of Helios or Selene, and so sometimes they place those duties on the twins who are the exact opposite. Also, Apollo is often seen as being bright and warm, making him the likely subject of the sun, while Artemis is kind of colder, less, um, how do I put this in a way that won't get me turned into a deer? I'm gonna go with less likeable. That's just my thoughts, and also there are many accounts of the myths, including the gods.

I know that because the Books I have call them the Gods of the Sun and Moon. Also the Romans didn't use all of the Greek Gods only the main court and a few others I think and so the duties were changed around some with other gods getting extra duties.

I actually enjoyed watching two anime shows that had some Greek and Roman Mythology in them.

And I'm one who believed most of those. A thread would be very helpful. I apparently know less about the subject than I though!

I knew Poseidon had regular legs, I never really thought about Zeus's hair one way or the other (to be truthful I did think it would be gold or black from the illustrations I've seen). I figured Aphrodite would wear whatever color she wanted BUT yeah I can see blue being a common outfit she'd wear seeing as she was born from the foam of the waters. I knew Hephaestus was crippled on both sides because I read the story where he had automations that helped him walk.

Indeed. Lazy mortals always getting their facts wrong. Otherwise I wouldn't be evil and Zeus wouldn't be blonde/silver haired and Aphrodite wouldn't be as pretty as Hera, etc....Persephone's better looking though... Aww crap I'm biased.

I think a lot of people get them mixed up due to the Roman myths. Like in an adapted play of Medea we watched at school, they called Aphrodite by the name Venus. I went on a rant to my teacher about how I thought it was suppose to be Greek and not Roman... blah blah blah. I'm not sure if I'm right.

Perhaps common pop culture has caused us to believe Poseidon has a fish tail. I always thought that was as a young girl after seeing The Little Mermaid.

My handy-dandy Edith Hamiliton's Mythology says the following:

"As Phoebus was the Sun, she was the Moon, called Phoebe and Selene (Luna in Latin). Neither name originally belonged to her. Pheobe was a Titan, one of the older gods. So too was Selene--a moon-goddess, indeed, but not connected with Apollo. She was the sister of Helios, the sun-god with whom Apollo was confused."

Then it goes into a bunch of confusing mumble-jumble about Hecate, Artemis, and Selene being a "goddess in three forms."

Also, on the silver/gold note, I always thought that if girls or women died a swift death they would say they were slain by "Artemis's silver arrows."

It's weird trying to picture gold being associated with Artemis.

That bit about Artemis being Three Fold sounds a lot like my book Artemis Goddess of the Sun and Moon.

I really don't think she was associated with the sun or moon, it's probably a mix up between Diana and Artemis, who were very similar, but indeed different from her Greek counterpart.

More about the "goddess of three forms", it was a legend/rumor (I'm not really sure what the right word to use is) that durring the nights with no moon, Artemis would descend into the underworld as Hecate, and her presence was in dark and wild places. It goes back to the moon thing. Hmm. It's a debatable topic.
