I love flipping through the patterns included in Gothic Lolita Bibles... Most of the time I don't even have to buy/download them, I can just skim over the pictures and go "Ohhhhhh that's how you do that!"

You can buy white cotten knee high scocks from Wal-mart for two dollars, annnnnd Cosmates dot com sells great loli clothes for less, along with shoes and accesories. Loli make-up is meant to be light and playful, natural looking most of the time, light pinks and pale blues work for sweet lolita's depending on what colors you are wearing.
As for sewing a skirt, learn it once and memorize the pattern, if you plan on sewing others. A basic skirt pattern curves up at the waist a little and on the corresponding botton part of the skirt.
White blouses can be found a thrift stores for cheap and they are easy to alter for a more lolita inspired look...
As for that comment on Ballet flates, I have to disagree, a lot of Lolita's go for them now as they are easy to walk in, and they look nice with a lot of outfits, just make sure they match.
Most lolita's don't wear a lot of jewelry, maybe a pretty bracelet or a nice necklace to match, or a lace chocker, but not a lot.
You can get sweet Lolita parasol's from Sanrio, they don't typically match but of all the lolita's that I know they do agree that they are rather cute.
If adopting the Lolita lifestyle, learn not to curse, it is looked down upon by all, and that has a tendency to be a big down fall for most. Also, no short skirts unless you are going for the Ero-Lolita style, in which feel free to get your petticoat from PartyCity, as they sell the short small ones.
Ankle high socks are approved by lolitas, and you can find the kind with lace pre attached still in the childrens section, depending on your foot size.
If you have any questions about Lolita's I can do my best to answer them, as I am a lolita myself and I used to run a fashion show for a con, so I know my fare share about most of the Harajuku and Shinjuku styles, both male and female.
ALSO
if you are not so much of a girly person, or you know someone like that and you would like to try and get them into something like the Lolita fashion style, try the Punk Lolita, boy-Lolita (do not confuse it with Kadona styles,) and the Gyaru style, they have a tendency to appeal to the less girly of the females.

Don't buy from Cosmates. You can get the same items from Fanplusfriend and Bodyline for less. Cosmates just buys their products and marks them up a random amount. Back before Bodyline became available to overseas markets, that wasn't such a big deal, but now that they have an English site and international shipping, it's really silly to pay Cosmates extra fees to get the same items. Especially since Bodyline likes doing shipping promotions with flat-rates regardless of weight, and Cosmates charges per 500g.
Also, the big trend in lolita right now is deco-loli. It's all about accessories and being as "complete" in your coordinate with rings, bracelets, watches, hairclips, necklaces and earrings as you can be. Even normal lolitas wear at least coordinating pieces, because it pulls the outfit together in the end; accessories, jewelry and good coordination are all key to a great outfit.
Finally, it's "Kodona" and Gyaru != lolita. It's an entirely different style, and it's all about being girlie, feminine and trendy.

Hiya Sputino. whee
I would also like to disagree with short skirts being okay if you wear ero-lolita. Short skirts with costume petticoats are a no-no-no (that's three no's) in all lolita styles. The knee-length skirts with a cupcake silhouette are embedded within the very definition of lolita.
Sorry Kanda, it isn't my intention to tear your post apart. sweatdrop But misinformation can be dangerous in a fashion with such strict rules. Newcomers who read it would face harsh criticism and might even give up on the style altogether if people are too mean to them.

Yeah I know my spelling isn't the best, my internet kept going down when I was typing it, and those two styles are not ones that I do, I'm more of a sweet Lolita. and the blood lolita that I was getting at is called Guro, I get that and Gyaru mixed up a lot, as they are similar words to me, I know what a Gyrau is, as it stems from the Ganguro type fashion along with the Centa-gai ones as well, :/ And I've heard of the decora loli, though I'm not that fond of it, as it's a merging of Lolita and Decora-kei styles, I think Decora-kei honestly was heading in this direction to begin with, just the fact that it took them so long to classify it amuses me. @II-Bakanishi-Mikanishi-II I would say Cosmates, though the person I am quoting says they are expensive, I don't personally think so though I never have bought from them, I make my own clothes, You can check out the places she suggested by googling the names, though I thiiiink they take paypal, I'm not sure if you wanted that or not... :/

You misinterpret me, but what I was saying is that for ero-lolita's you need the short petticoats, and the Costume ones you find are about the right length. Though I don't like Ero-lolita's much at all, as the whole lolita style is to not look "sexy" but more cute and elegent, so to throw on a short puffy skirt with some frills annoys me some, it's just altering the style to attract men, an EXTREME NO NO in the lolita world, as it's something you do for yourself and not for others. And I am not saying it's bad to attract men, it's just when you are dressed in Lolita fashion you do not attract the kind of man you want, at least not in america, and almost never in Japan, you have a tendency to find the "fetish men" when doing so, hence the fact that Lolita is a style for yourself and not for others.

They charge per .5kg unit for shipping. This means that the shoes cost a bit more than 40 dollars to ship [to the zone that the question is referring to; it has a higher shipping rate due to location and customs systems], thus, the shoes are 87 dollars in the end.
Those same shoes on Bodyline are 37 dollars. They charge a flat DHL rate right now of 20 dollars regardless of how much you buy. Thus, the shoes are 57 dollars.
... see the difference? They not only mark up the price of the item, but their shipping is a lot more expensive. Bodyline makes its money by being cheap, having random "sale" events, and offering mass shipping at a flat rate. Lately, that rate is 20 dollars, regardless of how much you buy. In the past, the rate has been "free shipping" if you buy more than 500 or 1000 dollars worth, which meant people did group orders together with a bunch of other people. Cosmates takes advantage of being local [thus not having to pay shipping] to the retailer to buy at a wholesaler's rate, and then mark things up.
Also, if you can't be bothered to spell-check or proof-read your own post, why bother putting it up? It just makes you look ill-informed, then defensive when you have to blame your internet's poor connection for your mistakes.
[edit]: I couldn't check this morning since I had to leave for work, but Bodyline takes PayPal and credit cards through PayPal for right now, and F+F does direct bank transfers or PayPal the same way as Bodyline. However, you do not need a PayPal account to buy from either, only a credit card or debit card with a credit card symbol. They both simply use the PayPal cart system for their check-out, so you don't need to register or anything like that. It's just safer for your identity that they have it set up that way.

Girls, you're getting upset/annoyed/defensive over nothing! It's fairly common knowledge among the lolita circles that cosmates is overpriced tat which costs way to much for what it is. sure, brand items are expensive but bodyline sure as hell isn't. spuntino is trying to help work out some misconceptions as is Yossy. Nobody mentioned attracting men, just the fundamentals of lolita is a modest skirt. Ero only lifts the skirt a tiny bit. The actual style is defined by subtle detail like higher heels, mildly lower necklines or bared shoulders accompanied with fetish elements such as corset closure or chokers. As contribution to this thread, I feel as if I should post a link to the handbook It's the most basic advice you can get and covers almost all of the fashion: An essential for a lolita newbie! http://lolita-handbook.livejournal.com/

I want to start getting into lolita I am saving up for supplies I plan on making everything myself except for things like shoes sweatdrop at first I wanted to just buy some basic things, but I definitely have my size against me. I'm taller than most and have some kind of mix between pear and hourglass figure. so I decided that making things myself would be a lot simpler than buying and everything. now i know some stores have the custom size option but they never give you the option to get the skirt or blouse a little longer. I have troubles buying clothes in Europe as it is I am not even going to try hoping ill find anything ever fitting me precisely.
so I am saving for a adjustable dress form (ill get half of it from my mother because she could use it to since its adjustable). and fabric and such but does anyone of you have any suggestions about what item to start with?
