hehhee, another one..."How to be GOTHIC LOLITA"

How to be: Gothic Lolita!

Things you'll need:

♥ Sewing skills (optional)
♥ Petticoat
♥ Hair decorations (headpiece, ribbons, bows, bands, mini-hats, etc.)
♥ Proper, non-sheer knee-high socks. No thigh-hi stockings, no costume knee highs with the satin bows, no leggings, crew socks, trouser socks, or tube socks. Tights are acceptable.
♥ A pair of elegant shoes. Basic dress mary janes will do in a pinch.
♥ Well-maintained hair

Steps:

1. Throw away any pre/misconceptions you may have! Gothic Lolita is not necessarily related to what you think of as "Goth", nor does it have anything to do with *****. The fashion and the lifestyle do not contain sexual connotations. Followers of the fashion do not consider it to be a sexual style. Instead, adherents present themselves as young Victorian girls and consider it necessary to look "cute," "beautiful," or "elegant" rather than "sexy."

2. You may want to purchase one of the Gothic & Lolita Bibles from a Japanese bookstore, comic book store or online. These magazines are a great resource for anyone interested in the style. If you don't have the funds to spend 15 to 20 dollars on one of the Bibles, visit one or more of the listed External Links for more information on what exactly "Gothic Lolita" is. It's good to have a strong foundation regarding what the style consists of before you attempt to dress in that way.

3. Invest in a few essential items. These include (but are not limited to) a white blouse and/or a black blouse (depending on what style your wardrobe is leaning towards), one or two full skirts, a good petticoat, bloomers, and knee-high or over-the-knee socks. Blouses vary with style, for sweet you may want a peter pan collar, for classic you may want a high collar. Other elements to look for in a blouse are a nice, tailored look, puff or cap sleeves, a bib or yoke, pintucks, ruffles or a decent amount of lace, and perhaps a neck bow if you wish. The skirts must be around knee length and full enough to fit a petticoat underneath. Also, make sure that the skirt fits on your waist or a little below it, but not at your hips. In order to get the right silhouette, the skirt must sit at the natural waist. After you have these, expand into other colors than black and white. Red, pink, light and dark blue, brown and floral patterns are common. A good petticoat is NOTHING like a square dancing petticoat. A-Line or Bell shaped is recommended. Hoop skirts and light slips will not fill out the skirt correctly.

4. Get a good pair of shoes and/or boots. Appropriate shoes include the classic Mary-Janes and Mary-Jane inspired shoes, platforms, chunky heels or espadrilles that cover your whole foot. Ballet flats are generally not liked as they do not look quite "right" with knee socks, though you may wear them if you wish. If you're a beginner, you should invest in a good pair of Mary-Janes, as they will always be acceptable (assuming they're real Mary-Jane type shoes, not fetish Mary-Jane 'inspired'). The heels should be as wide as the natural heel itself. Stiletto heels are sometimes acceptable, if comfortable and not too high. Wedge heels might be acceptable as long as the shape of the shoe is appropriate. If possible, you may go for these kind of shoes on platforms, as long as they are not meant to be fetish shoes.

♥ Headpieces are a key part of your outfit. It helps put the outfit together and add a touch from an elegant, distant past. Headdresses can be simple headbands (Alice bands), or more elaborate pieces decorated with ribbons, lace or flowers. The most common are the Alice Bow (one large on on top of your head, or two smaller ones off to the side), the basic headdress (an oval or rectangle of fabric embellished with ribbon or lace), and mini-hats/crowns/flowers worn at an angle. Whatever you choose to go with, you must make sure that the headpiece goes well with your outfit. Attention to detail is very important. The fabric and lace or other ornaments on the headpiece must match those of your outfit, yet must not compete with everything else.

♥ A purse is usually a functional accessory to have. Bag options are endless as long as they match your outfit. Parasols, bags, jewelry, nails and makeup can make the outfit more spectacular and interesting. If you are going to get a parasol though, make sure you invest in a good sized parasol that will compliment you and will also protect you from the sun. Please avoid battenberg lace parasols, lace craft/wedding parasols, or toy parasols available at your local toy store. They make the outfit look very costume-like and that's not what we are going for. The reason why this style looks the way it does is because the outfits are meant to be clothes, NOT costumes.

♥ Hair is important. Use references to see what hairstyle works for you - and wigs are always an option! Bangs (fringe), ringlets, long hair and pigtails are common. Wild, unnatural color is optional.

5. Look at stores like H&M, Target, Forever 21 and even TJ Maxx - popular or trend stores like these often have nice blouses, skirts and stockings that can be considered Lolita. You do not have to pay 25,000 yen for a dress from Japan. You can often find many things to work in with a lolita coordinate for under $30.

Makeup:

♥ Try to look as natural as possible. Anyone can wear lolita, but having raccoon eyes or hot pink eyeshadow does not look good with your classic style Innocent World jumperskirt. Try to match your makeup to the style. Gothic? Dramatic deep eyeshadows and a crimson lip work well. Country? Natural, light makeup and pink cheeks do the trick. But no matter what, do not use whiteface makeup. It looks very costume-like and horrible, and only 80's era goths are known and should be known for doing that.

♥ Be confident! Don't take anything from anyone; don't let people make fun of you. If someone makes a rude comment, reply with a smile or ignore the person. Getting angry is a bad response. If you are having trouble being confident to go out this way, don't wear lolita. It's a fashion that is probably going to attract attention.

Tips:

♥ The Gothic & Lolita Bibles as well as the Gosu Rori magazine have excellent sewing patterns for seamstresses of any skill level, so if you can sew, you should pick a few of them up.

♥ The Gothic & Lolita Bible has been released in English and can be found in your local book or comic store. It's an excellent source of information for beginners and comes with sewing patterns like its Japanese counterpart.

♥ Knowing a little bit of Japanese is useful in understanding parts of the magazines, websites and patterns you may encounter.

♥ It is always a good idea, but not necessary, to have a Lolita lifestyle.
Decorate your room/house in that way, bake/cook, have tea parties and cherish everything that is beautiful.

♥ Males in the fashion should take steps to fit the feminine style; removing hair on the legs, (tasteful) makeup, lipstick, and mascara will promote a more girlish appearance.

♥ See the movie "Kamikaze Girls," an entertaining comedy from writer-director Tetsuya Nakashima based on Novala Takemoto's book that serves as a veritable documentary on the (Sweet) Lolita look.

♥ Remember- It's just a fashion. While some choose to be "lifestyle lolitas", others simply dress in lolita. There is no code on how one should act in lolita, a common misconception by newbies. You are still you, in or out of the fashion. Some people don't seem to understand this, but not everyone is nice and not everyone is mean, but it won't hurt to be polite when people ask questions or stare.

There are lots of affordable ways to get things to fit this style besides buying from Japan. Candy Violet sells absolutely amazing petticoats for very cheap, considering their quality and construction. (Petticoats like the ones at Hot Topic are TOO SHORT to wear with Lolita styles, though! Keep that in mind!)

There's also EGL and EGL_Sales on Live Journal, where people sell gently used goods, including Japanese items, and offer their services making custom items for far less that. Web site Fan+Friend is pretty cheap, but their stuff is mixed quality.

Online is pretty much the best way to get it, honestly. It's cheapest, and safe. There are a slew of indy brands, in the US AND in Europe. I can think of at least one in Italy, a few in Germany, two in France, and a handful of very talented seamstresses scattered throughout.

There are two physical stores in Paris that sell Japanese brands, however. They're both independent retailers, rather than part of the franchises, but you can find Baby, the Stars Shine Bright and Angelic Pretty there. Also, in the Netherlands there's MFashion, which sells a variety of brands, and at least two alternative stores in Germany recently declared that they'll now be carrying Angelic Pretty. Since I don't speak German, however, I'm not sure how to tell you where they are.

The UK also has a GLP and "Angel Pretty" store in Camden, but their quality is absolutely crap, and very few of their items are appropriate for lolita except in the fetish context. They're more appropriate for clubwear at best.

Thank you. I want to live lolita but that would mean getting rid of comfy clothes. XD My room is kinda already lolita-ish. I've got a old style sewing machine. What I've noticed with lolita it something old and new.

I going for sweet lolita. I'll be making my outfit pretty soon. I would love to get a lolita bible. Do you know a site that sells them.

Have you thought about trying your hand at making your own clothes? A skirt is fairly simple to make. (I could try and show you how to do it, if you couldn't find something online? I make a lot of skirts.) If you can make a skirt, you can couple it with a nice blouse from a shop and you'll have something pretty. I think a lot of people forget that Japanese fashion is supposed to be about individual expression, not necessarily what the label on your clothes read, so most people feel they aren't "doing it right" when they don't wear brand... But I think wearing what you think is pretty is what's really important!
