[ That was really amusing to read. xD Since this is the first ever Outlaw grading, I'm not quite sure how they're supposed to be done...I'll wing it. ;3 ]
When they returned to the guild, both Puer and Tolin (mostly Puer, though) were surrounded by young, beautiful female Pokemon, all squealing and wanting autographs. In the back were some nerdy males, who were ready to sign comic and movie rights, and some reporters from the local news station who rushed up for an interview.
Meanwhile, the police force brought out a bounty of 2000 PD for them, and the guild awarded them two mission points.
The fangirls finally cleared, but not before leaving offerings; a cape and hero mask for the both of them. One particularily ninja one hung from the ceiling and took photos; a small subgroup was loudly proclaiming their new OTP was Puer x Dr. Destruction, but they were quickly smacked into silence by the opposing Dr. Destruction x Puer group. Every other fangirl made a point to ignore them, and instead tossed loot.
By the end, the group had amassed the 2000 PD and mission points from before, another 1000 PD from the fangirls, and an EvoBox from some creepy person who they ignored. They were talked about on public news channels and a movie and comic were made to be produced.
It was enough to possibly make them consider never taking another mission, ever again.

Client: ??? Mission: "There...is this thing...shiny...round...called an Everstone...in the mines. Get it for me." Dungeon: Gemstone Mines Floors: 20 Rewards: ???+??? Gemstone Mines (Entrance) The opening to the mines stood before the two Pokemon, like a giant mouth with raw, uncut gemstones for teeth. Cracked and rotting support beams barely held up the entrance to the cavern, a fact that did little to soothe Armand’s nerves. He gulped, “Well…this is our first mission. We have no idea who our client is, no idea what’s in it for us, and we have to finish two thirds of this dungeon. Who’s idea was this anyway?” His single eye wandered over to his partner, Veronica the Larvitar, who just stood there, arms crossed in front of her chest, a triumphant smirk on her face, ”Heh, yours , smart one. I told you we should’ve gone with saving that poor Chikorita from the big bad lava,” she shook her head, voice filled with false pity as she said ‘poor.’ Armand glared at her, and proceeded to the Mine’s entrance. He examined the stray crystals that lay littered around the area. He shook his head, “We won’t be finding any Everstones here… despite how much I would like to…better get go-” Armand was cut off when he realized that Veronica was already inside the mines, halfway down the first flight of stairs, and was waving back at him with that annoying smirk of hers, “Come on you Slowpoke! What are you afraid of? The dark?!” She continued to laugh all the way down the stairs, Armand silently in tow. Gemstone Mines (BF1) Belly Slots: 5 Pokemon: 0 Despite being only the first floor, the Mines were surprisingly dark, only lighted by glowing crystals that littered the walls. Veronica marched triumphantly ahead, Armand floating not too far behind her, hands behind his back, deep in thought. (Who could be this mysterious client? What would they want with an Everstone…? Could it be possible that they want to use it for…) Armand vaguely registered that his name was being called. His single eye zoomed around in his skull, searching for any sign of his partner. “Armand! Dammit, come help me!” Armand finally pinpointed the angsty Larvitar, pinned against a wall by a Vulpix who looked as if it had a horrible case of rabies. Armand brought his arms around in front of him and concentrated. Within a matter of seconds, a small ball of yellow light had formed, he shot it at the Vulpix. At first, it seemed as if the move did nothing, but then the Vulpix backed away, and promptly smacked into a wall, over, and over again. Veronica righted herself, laughing. She walked over to the Vulpix and punched the wall beside her, hard. A shock wave was sent up the wall, and a small pile of rocks fell on the Vulpix’s head, knocking it unconscious. “You know, for a wimp, you ain’t that bad at fighting. Come on, let’s go.” she proceeded into the darkness as Armand sighed and followed. Gemstone Mines (BF2) Belly Slots: 4.5 Pokemon: 1 The two Pokemon, walked side by side through the winding corridors. It was quiet in the cave, and that made Veronica nervous. She craved noise, some sort of action, calmness was just too….calm for her. Armand gave her a curious glance as she fidgeted with her hands, wondering what could possibly be wrong. As if on cue, a sudden jet of water pegged Veronica in the back of the head, pushing her face first into the ground. Armand looked behind them, only to find a Shellder, laughing hysterically at Veronica as she righted herself again, an angry glare on her face. She looked ready to fight, so Armand held out a hand, “No, allow me. You’re at a disadvantage.” Veronica looked as if someone had slapped her, but she just let out a huff and crossed her arms defiantly. By Now the Shellder had stopped its laughing fit and was ready to go. It let out a low growl, but Armand stood his ground, concentrating on some unseen force. The Shellder suddenly leaped at Armand, but it didn’t get far. Behind it, a shadow version of Armand was holding the Shellder, and promptly threw it against the nearby wall, knocking it unconscious with a sickening crack, for it had hit a hard crystal. Armand winced as the Shellder slid down the wall, he hadn’t meant for it to get hurt that badly. He shrugged, Shellder had strong shells and he knew it’d be fine…eventually. Gemstone Mines (BF3) Belly Slots: 4 Pokemon: 2 Again, the tunnels had fallen silent, the only sound was Veronica’s feet against the gravelly surface of the cave floor. Veronica stopped, looking very alert, as she stared down the dark hallway. Armand looked back at her, curious. “Armand…get close to the wall…” Veronica’s voice was so serious, Armand actually didn’t know what to do. “Wha-?”“OUT OF THE WAY!”Veronica brutally shoved Armand out of the way just as he heard it. It sounded like a small stampede of Tauros, and it was getting close fast. Veronica landed with a thud, just as a round pink ball barreled into view. The Larvitar struck a steady stance and took the Rollout attack head on, grabbing the wild Jigglypuff by its sides to slow its velocity. As it slowed, Veronica savagely bit its head, over and over again, until it had finally stopped, fainted from the sheer force of the bites. Armand was speechless, he had never seen Veronica fight like that before. Veronica just looked at Armand, a smile on her face, “You’re welcome. Now get a move on.” Veronica trotted off into the darkness. Armand just blinked, and followed wordlessly. Gemstone Mines (BF4) Belly Slots: 3.5 Pokemon: 3 Veronica sighed, arms limp, “Are we there yet?” she whined. “No. We still have about sixteen floors left, at least that’s where the mission said the Everstone would be…” Armand gave Veronica a look that said it was better not to continue this conversation. Normally, it would have done nothing to stop her, but another voice had joined the conversation, “ Everstone, eh? I doubt you’ll be getting that far, ‘cause your mission ends here, a’hyuck” Armand’s eye snapped back to the darkness at the end of the corridor, which soon revealed the source of the noise. A Lombre, flanked by two Poliwhirl, came into their line of sight. The five Pokemon stared down each other, knowing the only way this would end is with one party being knocked out. Armand made the first move, he had been silently charging a new Confuse Ray, and fired it at the Lombre. Unfortunately, the erratic flight pattern of the ball of light made it hit one of the Poliwhirl. The Poliwhil staggered back, before looking at his comrades, an obviously possessed look on his face. “Paul, what do ya think you’re doin’?!” the Lombre’s attention was fixated on his bodyguard, who just looked at the Lombre, before jumping in the air and smashing him, and the other Poliwhirl under a massive Body Slam. Veronica, who had been silent this whole time, let out a battle cry, and shot at the group, limbs thrashing and flailing in every direction. She jumped and landed in the middle of them, hitting each of them several times, before she fell to the ground, confused from the exhaustion. Armand looked at the other three, who had fainted from the many blows Veronica had given them. He smiled, or at least he would have if he had a mouth, picked up Veronica, and headed for the stairs. Gemstone Mines (BF5) Belly Slots: 3 Pokemon: 6 “Oooog, my aching head…” Veronica moaned, rubbing her head furiously, as if enough force could remove the pain. Armand didn’t even bother looking at her, “You of all people should’ve known that using Thrash like that would leave you Confused…” Veronica glared at him, prepared to retort, but a cackle broke through the darkness, and a wild Sableye walked into the light of the crystals, “Kekeke, looks like this is a good time to strike…” Armand would’ve raised an eyebrow if he could, why were Pokemon so intent on stopping them all of a sudden? Veronica looked at Armand, a grimace on her face, “You’re gonna have to deal with this one Armand, I’m still a little disoriented…” Armand nodded and looked at the Sableye, a little too late. As he turned his head, he got a face full of Shadow Ball, which flung him to the ground. The pain was intense, now he knew what it was like to be at a type disadvantage. Armand got up, to the sound of the Sableye cackling again, he righted himself and began to charge up some power. Armand’s body began to swell, larger and larger until he almost completely filled the tunnel. At the climax of his height, he looked down at the Sableye, who was just staring at Armand, a look of complete disbelief on its face. Armand continued to stare at the Sableye, until, at the least expected moment, he let all his energy release in one, big, “BOO!” The sheer force of his words blew the Sableye over. Armand slowly returned to his normal size, and when the Sableye showed no signs of getting back up, he floated over to Veronica, who was dusting herself off. “Wow, I didn’t expect Night Shade to be that effective…guess that Sableye was more of a coward than I initially anticipated…” Armand just nodded, glancing over the Sableye with little interest, before continuing to the next floor, Veronica following close behind. Gemstone Mines (BF6) Belly Slots: 2.5 Pokemon: 7 Armand admired the sparkling gemstones; they seemed to get more colorful as the Mine got deeper. Veronica absent mindedly chomped on a random rock, chewing thoughtfully about something that was a mystery to Armand. Frankly, Armand didn’t care what she was thinking about, he had his own issues to contemplate. Although, that would have to wait, because they had more company. Armand and Veronica struck a battle ready pose, making sure whatever came their way would know what they were up against. Unfortunately, instead of some dark, scary monster, a small Happiny came skipping into view. Armand relaxed, but Veronica remained tensed up, she looked at Armand, an evil grin on her face, “I want to hit it.” Armand barely gave her a passing glance, “No.” He turned his attention to the Happiny who had stopped and was looking at the pair curiously, “Excuse me, would you happen to know anything about an Everstone here?” The Happiny regarded Armand curiously before answering, “ Oh you mean the spotty stone? Skitty was playing with it farther in, around the eighteenth or twenty first floors…I don’t really remember. Nice meeting you though~” The Happiny waved good bye before skipping passed them, singing of magic spotted stones. Veronica sighed and started walking, silently. They had a long way to go, Veronica knew it, Armand knew it, now if only they could find a faster way to that Everstone. Gemstone Mines (BF7) Belly Slots: 2 Getting hungry…Pokemon: 7 Veronica turned to her partner, a pained look on her face, “Armand…I’m hungry, can we please eat?”. Armand glanced at her, trying his best to ignore her “innocent” face, “No, the guild only gave us a few items to work with, besides, I’m sure you can hold out a bit longer. Just munch on a few of the stray crystals here. I hear they’re good for growing Larvitar.” He did his best to hide the patronizing look he wore, but Veronica saw it in full, and gave him a vicious glare. Nevertheless, she walked over to the wall and used Rock Slide to knock down a bright pink rock, and started chewing on it thoughtfully. Out of nowhere, a sound resembling rapid gunfire shot through the darkness. Veronica was the first to move, narrowly avoiding a stream of seeds, which obviously had a lot of power behind it. Armand wasn’t so lucky, getting hit square in the face with the next set of seeds, severely hitting him. (A critical hit?! This is just not my day!) Armand righted himself to see that a Nuzleaf, flanked by two Gloom had walked into view. (Looks like traveling in groups of three is a common trend nowadays…) The Nuzleaf looked them over, a smirk on his face, “Tch, such weak Pokemon, not even worth my time…get rid them Gloom.” The Nuzleaf smirked, clearly not at all worried about Armand and his partner. The Gloom moaned creepily and began to advance, seeping what looked like Toxic from their mouths. “Uh, Armand? A little help?” Veronica was backing away slowly, a disgusted look on her face. Armand struggled to get up, something was not right with those Gloom, but now was not the time to dwell on that. Propped up with one arm, Armand fired off a Confuse Ray toward the Nuzleaf. Unfortunately, a Leaf Blade saw to the fact that it never made contact. Armand looked toward Veronica a hopeless look on his face. Veronica just rolled her eyes and smashed the ground causing a small Rock Slide to bury the Gloom. Armand just stared, apparently the Gloom were all looks and no brawn. The Nuzleaf flinched, surprised at the Larvitar’s ferocity and strength. As fast as the weakness was revealed, the Nuzleaf regained its composure, remembering the fact that it had the type advantage. It took a ready stance, sharp Leaf Blades sprouting from its arms, “Now you’re dead!” The Nuzleaf charged at Veronica, his gaze screaming bloody murder. Veronica, being the stubborn spirit that she is, took a stance saying she was ready for anything. Fortunately, Armand was as ready as he could be, a thin shadow stretched from where he lay about a foot in front of Veronica. Just as the Nuzleaf let loose a loud battle cry, a small hand shot from the shadow and grabbed its leg, causing it to plummet face first into the ground. The Nuzleaf grunted as it struggled to remove its Leaf Blades from the ground. Veronica on the other hand, chuckled heartily and smashed the Nuzleaf’s head into the ground with a balled fist. Armand let out a sigh of relief, he tried to get up but pain shot through his body and he fell once again. Veronica walked over with an Oran Berry in hand and let out a sigh, “Don’t move. Here take this, it’ll help.” Veronica tossed the Oran berry at Armand who caught it in his mouth. He let the sweet and well balanced flavors cover his mouth before swallowing. He felt his body warm from the inside as the berry delved deeper into his system. Armand soon realized that he was floating again! Those things must really be powerful… Gemstone Mines (BF cool Belly Slots: 2 Getting Hungry…Pokemon: 10 Items Used: Oran Berry x1 There were now large crystals jutting from the wall and earth, several of them resonating with different elemental powers. Veronica munched on a small green crystal that sparked as she chewed, “Mmm, you really should try the Thunderstone, it’s simply divine~” Armand rolled his eye and was about to retort when the sound of singing interrupted him. (Oh come on! Can’t a guy start a simple conversation in this place?!) Armand fumed silently as a Togetic fluttered into view. It suddenly stopped singing when it noticed the duo, “Oh well hello there~ Would you like to play with me?~” The Togetic fluttered happily above them, seemingly harmless. Armand looked at the Pokemon suspiciously and shook his head, “Um, no…we really don’t have…” “Oops, too bad~”The Togetic waved it’s hands back and forth, causing them to glow. Veronica and Armand tensed, Metronome was not something to take lightly. Finally, the move finished, and the Togetic aimed at Veronica, almost instantly, a large beam of Water struck her point blank. She barely had time to utter, “Hydro Pump?! OH SHI*” Armand watched in horror as his partner was slammed against a wall, and couldn’t get up. The Togetic turned to him, “Whee~ Your turn!~” It winked at Armand and blew him a kiss that actually took on a physical form. Armand quickly charged a Confuse Ray to counter the Sweet Kiss, the two collided, creating a sharp noise that bounced off the walls. Armand was lucky enough to not have eardrums, the Togetic was not so lucky, “ Owie wowie~ That hurts!~” The Pokemon covered it’s ears as it fluttered frantically to try and outmaneuver the sound waves. Armand quickly took advantage of the temporary confusion to analyze the Happiness Pokemon using Foresight. His eye darted around quickly inside his skull, scanning the Pokemon for any sign of weakness. “Got it!” Armand took a ready stance, and suddenly, the crystals seemed to lose a bit if their glow. The cavernous hallway was bathed in an eerie dim light and Armand’s shadow seemed to crawl across all surfaces towards the Togetic. Without warning, the shadows struck out, like stalagmites and stalactites made of a dark and foreboding energy, and stabbed through the frantic Pokemon. It shrieked and fell to the ground, unconscious. Armand panted heavily, what in the world could’ve possessed him to act in such a…uncivilized way? The sound of a stone hitting the floor awoke Armand to the fact that he was not alone. He turned to see Veronica staring at him, mouth agape, a half eaten Moonstone on the ground at her feet. “Um, wow? Creepy much?” Veronica raised an eyebrow at Armand, who in turn, blushed. Or well, he would have if it wasn’t for the fact that he was a ghost. Gemstone Mines (BF9) Belly Slots: 1.5 Pokemon: 11 Items Used: Oran Berry x1 Armand floated silently alongside Veronica, trying desperately to forget the incident that had recently transpired. Thankfully, Veronica was busily munching on a newfound evolutionary stone, one that Armand didn’t bother identifying. As if this cave hadn’t already been predictable enough, the hallway started shaking vigorously, causing Veronica to stumble, “What the hell?”. The shaking intensified and just when it felt as if the cave was about to collapse, it all stopped. Veronica and Armand looked around suspiciously, anticipating the worst. Suddenly, the floor in front of the duo opened up and three Diglett popped out, looking quite mad. “Hey, this is our tunnel ya see?! Ain’t no one allowed down here but us!” Veronica looked at the trio, a disgusted look on her face, “Oh yeah? And what are you gonna do about it?” She crossed her arms, making her look even more defiant. Armand slowly slipped into the shadows, he decided it’d be best not to interfere. The head Diglett glowered at Veronica, “Oh yeah? Well come on boys! Lets Dig!” The trio disappeared into the earth instantly, and the tunnel was plunged into silence. Veronica was stagnant, using all of the senses that being a Ground-type gave her. Finally, she smirked, raised her foot, and lowered it hard on to the ground, causing a massive Earthquake to resonate throughout the tunnel. The three Diglett popped out of the ground, looking quite hurt, but very much conscious. “Oi, is that all you got? Mud Bomb!” The three Diglett made a disgusting sound, like the sound you here when someone gets ready to “hock a loogie”, and spit out three giant spheres, all filled with murky water. Veronica easily dodged Mud Bomb number one and two, but three hit her head on, slamming her against a wall. With a grunt, she stood, looking furious that she let her guard slip so much. She glared at the trio who were snickering at her in obvious amusement. Unexpectedly, Veronica found herself surrounded by a strange dark aura, A new move? Sweet. She concentrated on the new dark power and released it in the form of a swirling Dark Pulse. It completely consumed the three Diglett, and they did nothing but stand there, and absorb it, despite the fact they were obviously in pain. When the darkness cleared, the trio was motionless. I guess being rooted to the ground meant they can’t show that they were obviously unconscious. Veronica walked over to the three Diglett and smacked them a few times, testing to see if they were truly unconscious. When everything checked out a-okay, Veronica smirked and continued walking along the tunnel, and was soon joined by Armand. “Now who’s the creepy one?” Veronica just glared. Gemstone Mines (BF10) Belly Slots: 1 Pokemon: 14 Items Used: Oran Berry x1 The monotonous hallway opened up into a vast circular clearing, barely lit by a few scattered crystals that dimly shone in the darkness. Armand and Veronica slowed their steps, learning from their previous endeavors and using extra caution. Armand in particular studied the gemstones on the walls carefully. Were they moving? Armand turned to say something to Veronica only to find she had stopped walking a few feet behind. He began to say something, but Veronica just glared and put a finger to her mouth in the well-known “Shush” sign. He just looked at her in confusion; Veronica rolled her eyes and pointed to the shining gems on the ceiling. Armand narrowed his eyes at said gems and watched…they WERE moving. Armand did his best to hide his surprise and took matters into his own hands. With little concentration, he let loose five small Will-o-wisps into the cave, each of them moving toward the small five clumps of moving gems. As the balls of fire reached the ceiling he heard Veronica gasp, the light from the move had revealed that there were several Sableye. All of which were staring at the duo with intense curiosity, each of them having that same cynical grin. Veronica cracked her knuckles in obvious readiness to knock down the five Sableye with a swift Rock Slide. Due to their nature, the Will-o-Wisps made contact with three of the Sableye, and knocking them down to the ground with a thud. The other two dropped their grins and followed suit, but with more grace, of course. The three that had fallen righted themselves with a wince, angry red welts were apparent on their bodies. “Kekeke, you actually made it this far…impressive… too bad this is where it ends!” The middle Sableye lunged himself at Armand, his claws emanating a dark purplish shadow. Armand dodged as quick as he could, only to be hit from behind by a pulsating Power Gem. “Armand! Get up quick!” Veronica raised her fist high in the air, halting only to give Armand enough time to avoid her attack. He quickly rose in the air, away from the ground as Veronica’s fist made contact and the room suffered a major Earthquake. Armand looked around nervously, could this old mine shaft take so much punishment? “Veronica! Be careful with those moves! This is a very old tunnel!” Armand rushed over to the Sableye which hit him with Power Gem, for a little Payback, which seemed to work nicely on the beat up Pokemon. A stray Sableye launched itself at Veronica, causing her to skid back a few feet, the Zen Headbutt causing a fair amount of damage. Veronica jumped at the Pokemon and punched him in the face with a dark infused punch; just the kind of Payback Veronica enjoyed most. Meanwhile, Armand and one of the Sableye were having a stare-down, both of their shadows creeping toward the other, until they both reached their target and knocked them sideways. Veronica tossed the unconscious Sableye aside and rushed to Armand’s aide, Thrashing at any Sableye that stood in her way. Dazed and confused, Veronica finally reached Armand and propped him up. The remaining four Sableye gathered in front of the duo, reading themselves for the final blow. “Quickly, throw me at them.” Armand’s voice was barely above a whisper, but Veronica heard him anyways. Without hesitation she hurled him at the group of oncoming Sableye. The sudden outburst of offensiveness startled the Sableye and sent them running, but Armand followed in hot Pursuit. Eventually giving each of them a swift punch in the back of the head, sending them face-first into the soft dirt. Armand made a swift u-turn back to Veronica’s side, just in time to see two of the four Sableye to get back, ready for more, but obviously hurt; the other two remained in their face down position, each having their own scar where their burns had finally healed. The two Sableye’s eyes glinted with hate and fury, obviously not ready to go down just yet. They lunged themselves at Veronica and Armand, one readying a powerful Shadow Claw, and the other’s head glowing with the power of its Zen Headbutt. Veronica was still dazed from her little Thrashing tantrum, and Armand had used up most of his energy to use that last attack. All they could do was hold up their arms in defense for the pain to come. Oh boy, did it come, the two were hit hard with the full brunt of the two Pokemon’s attacks, and sent flying into the wall behind them. Malice glinting in their smiles, the Sableye began closing in for the kill. Armand struggled desperately to find his Explorer’s Badge, only to see it some twenty feet away, it was too much, and Armand just slumped down against the wall. Veronica was muttering something, that soon became loud enough for Armand to hear. “Not like this…not after we’ve made it so far…not this soon!” a force was building inside Veronica, “Not,” one that grew, “Like,” and grew, “THIS!” until it was released in the form of an enormous beam of pure energy, and completely engulfed the Sableye, until they were promptly flung clear across the large clearing, where they slammed against the wall, and fell unconscious. The Hyper Beam had burned a new entrance in the clearing, revealing a set of stairs that looked as if to lead farther into the mines. Veronica struggled to get up and helped Armand to his… floating position. She chuckled, slightly hysterically, “Hey look…the stairs,” For once, Armand was speechless. ~~Omg magical shortcut time~~ Gemstone Mines (BF20) Belly Slots: .5 (Getting Dizzy from Hunger) Pokemon: 19 Items Used: Oran Berry x1 Apple x3 Big Apple x 1 Again, the boringly similar hallway spread out into a clearing, although this one was smaller and felt less intimidating. Armand and Veronica strode into the middle of the clearing, none the worse for wear aside from their growling stomachs.[ color=#be8f3c] “Dammit, where’s that Skitty with the Everstone? I swear if I have to go through one more floor…” Veronica was cut short by a rather surly looking Kirlia walking into the clearing with a frightened looking Skitty in one hand and an Everstone in the other. It tossed the Skitty to the side, who quickly got back up and hid behind Veronica, “You can’t have this Everstone you hear?! There are NO Dawn Stones in this god forsaken mine, and I’m a GUY! I refuse to evolve, ya’ hear?! I WON’T!” the obviously deranged Kirlia’s eyes began to glow a bright blue, and shimmering leaves appeared out of thin air and launched themselves at Veronica and Armand. Quite calmly they both dodge the attack, the Kirlia’s aim was horrible, to say the least. Armand sighed and sent his shadow out to hold the struggling Kirlia still while Veronica charged her Dark Pulse attack. The Kirlia screamed hoarsely as the Dark Pulse hit him square in the face, knocking it unconscious. Armand tossed the limp body a few feet to the right and proceeded to pick up the Everstone the Kirlia had dropped. “Finally, now we can get out of here.” Armand tossed the shining grey rock into the air a few times before readying his Explorer Badge to send them home, sadly he was interrupted by the Skitty that had been hiding behind Veronica, “Hey! That’s my pretty stone! You can’t have it!” Veronica glanced at the small pink cat, obviously too tired to be angry. She tossed a small glowing gem at the Skitty, “Here kid play with this. Come on Armand, get us out of here.” The Skitty grabbed the gem with its tail and made a sound that sounded very much like, “Squee!~” before running off, probably to go show her Happiny friend. “ You know, I really think we bonded on this little venture.” Veronica glared, “Shut up and press the damn button,” Armand laughed and pressed the button, sending a beam of light down on top of the two Pokemon and making them instantly vanish.

The two arrived back in the guild to find themselves face to face with a very disgruntled Kirlia, apparently their client revealed. "Yes! You got the Everstone! Now theres no risk of me evolving into a girly-looking Gardevoir! Thank you!" He accepted the stone and held it tight. "For all your hard work, I think you deserve this!" He held out a bag containing 7000PD and a Giga Impact TM. He teleported out of the guild with a quick wave to the two. Checking the bag the duo would find a few bonuses as well! Two Rubies and an additional 1000PD. --- The next day, a Skitty totting a shiny rock in its mouth, a Togetic singing a loud chorus of Disney songs and a very sinister Sableye came to the guild, looking to join the team! Though they could only take one!
[Very nice for your first mission, very nice indeed. ;3 Keep it up.]

Veronica just stared, mouth agape at the Kirlia, "But you, and we, and that, and him?!" Her arms twisted every which way as she tried to grasp just what the heck was going on. Armand just smiled tiredly, "Yes...thank you, and you're quite welcome..." He took the items from the Kirlia in his back, along with a few other goodies that had been found in the dungeon. "Why you little! I'm gonna kill you!!!" Veronica launched herself at the Kirlia only to land hard on the ground, for the Kirlia had teleported away before her attack could hit. On their way back to their room, they spotted the Skitty, Togetic, and one of the many Sableye they had faced on their adventure. Armand pointed at the Sableye, "You, come with us. And please help me with her." The Sableye let out a cry of happiness before running to join Armand. He grabbed Veronica's other hand and together, the two dragged the rather pissed off Larvitar from the prying eyes of the public.
((Thanks so much~ And I'll continue to do my best sir! o3o))

Imiti--- CelsusImiti looked over the bulletin board. One mission in particular caught his interest. “ The Gemstone Mines. That’s in the southern territory, isn’t it? We haven’t actually been there, have we? ” “ Isn’t it the place where they used to mine evolution stones? ” “ Yeah. Apparently a Swalot’s been eating them, and the other inhabitants aren’t pleased. ” At that moment, a Poliwhirl walked up to them. He had a fairly calm demeanor, and spoke softly. “ Excuse me, but are you thinking of taking that mission? ” Imiti answered, “ Yeah. Do you know who posted it? ” “ I did. ” “ Oh. Alright, what exactly happened and how’re you involved? ” “ I was there to get a Water Stone. I’ve been wanting to evolve into Poliwrath. And I was just trying to find a Water Stone, when I see this Swalot eating gems! ” “ Do a lot of Pokemon need those stones? ” “ Yes. There are quite a few Pokemon in there that need stones to evolve, and the gems are already pretty rare. ” “ I see. ” “ Will you take the mission then? ” Imiti looked behind his back at Celsus. “ Sure, why not? ” * * * The mine entrance stood before them, an entrance to a dimly lit artificial tunnel. There were the remains of a mining cart on the ground just inside the entrance. They couldn’t really see very far into the tunnel. “ Alright, what are we waiting for? ” * * * The tunnels of the Gemstone Mines were artificial, with a slightly rounded square cross-section. There were rusted rails along the ground for mine carts. As Imiti walked inside and Celsus just sort of floated there in the bag behind him, they began to notice a slight purple tint in the floor and walls. In addition, there were conspicuous marks on the walls, as if something had dug not very deeply into them. When they got to the first split, only the left path had the purple colour and marks. “ Swalot trail? ” “ Probably. ” They progressed through the mines, torches lighting the way. Whenever they got to an intersection or a split, they simply followed the purple stain. They hadn’t gotten very far, however, when interesting things happened. There was a split, and the side with the Swalot trail had a rather sharp downward slope in the tunnel, sharp enough that Imiti nearly fell forward when they first got to it. At this point, it stopped looking like a tunnel and seemed more like a cave, with stalactites and stalagmites on the floor and ceiling. After a while of walking along this sloped path, they reached a hole, maybe two metres wide, filled with water. Imiti grabbed a torch off the wall, moved it close to the water, and noticed that there was a cavern full of it under their feet. Apparently the Swalot had managed to swim underwater. “ …Huh. ” “ Well, what do we do now? ” “ You could always just go on ahead and tell me what you find. ” “ Sure, that works. ” “ Then again, given how fast you agreed to that, I’m a little scared of the idea now. ” “ Hey, screw you. ” * * * When Celsus took his first breath of the underground water, he very nearly spit it back out. This stuff was just—ugh. The water smelled and tasted like there had been nasty things dumped into it. For his own protection, he enacted an Aqua Ring to filter the poison out of the water he was about to breathe. Obviously, the Swalot had been there and left something behind. Before long, though, Celsus ran into trouble. Out of nowhere, a Lombre and a Shellder came at the Magikarp from opposite sides, both apparently looking for an easy meal. Celsus turned the other way and swam as fast as he possibly could. He was not well equipped to handle this sort of thing. Maybe Imiti could do something. * * * Imiti was just sort of sitting there when a familiar Magikarp Splashed out of the water to land in the water-filled backpack. Now that he was soaked, Imiti got up in time to see the Lombre and Shellder shoot up out of the water. He quickly Teleported a few metres back as the two other Pokemon landed on the edge of the underground pool. “ Brought back friends? ” “ I think they’re hungry. ” Imiti sighed. “ Every. Single. Trip. ” He faced the two belligerent Pokemon. “ Excuse us, we were just passing through; could we maybe—” He never got to finish the sentence; the Lombre charged. “ …Whatever then. ” Imiti teleported another fifty feet back into the tunnel to buy himself time, and took out one of the TMs that he had on him. “ Here, take this, ” Imiti said as he dropped it into the water-filled bag. “ …Huh. Turn around and point me at those guys. ” “ What? ” “ Hurry up. ” Since Celsus apparently had something in mind, Imiti complied. Celsus then made eye contact with the two charging Pokemon, which were now very close. All of a sudden, he heard a crash behind him, as if the Pokemon had suddenly become absolutely terrible at balance. Using his minor psionic abilities to look behind him, Imiti had to laugh. The TM had been Teeter Dance, and it was being put to use by a fish. Basically, Celsus was causing the attackers to try to imitate the motions of a Magikarp. After a minute or so, both of the attacking Pokemon were on the ground, groaning. Finally satisfied, Celsus relented. “ All right, let’s continue. ” So, they proceeded exactly as they had before, with Celsus in the water with an Aqua Ring up and Imiti sitting at the side of the underground pool. Half an uneventful hour later, Celsus returned, this time in much less of a hurry. Imiti scooped him up, put him in the backpack, and inquired, “ So, what did you find? ” “ The next dry area is straight forward, five hundred twenty six of my length away. ” “ Are you sure? ” “ Positive. ” “ Does it go up or down at all? ” “ Down a bit, but not enough that you need to adjust anything. ” “ Alright, here goes. ” Imiti teleported to the point Celsus had indicated, and found himself at the top of a cavern about twenty feet high. Having expected this, he enacted a levitation effect and brought himself to the chamber floor. Celsus’s instructions had been precise. The Swalot trail was still there. They continued following it, finally reaching another large, rather nondescript chamber. The apparent culprit was still there, a Swalot that had just downed a Fire Stone. Imiti walked forward with the intention of apprehending the Pokemon when he heard footsteps from behind. “ Incoming! ” Imiti whirled around to see a charging Eevee, still a child. It seemed to be looking for an easy meal and had apparently found one. “ Oh dear Arceus, why does everything want to eat you? ” “ Hey, it’s not my fault! ” Imiti teleported a bit further into the chamber and grabbed another TM at random. Sing. Well, at the rate that Eevee was approaching, it would have to do. The Abra opened his mouth and let out a single note in his pre-pubescent voice, one that he held for a good few seconds. As the magical effects took hold, the Eevee slowed, its charge became a walk, and it curled up and fell asleep. Imiti walked up, picked the Eevee up, and placed it further down the tunnel where it came from, fishing an apple out of his bag and putting it beside the Eevee. He then turned back to the Swalot— —who was eating evolution stones in its sleep. “ That…didn’t entirely work, did it? ” Imiti walked up to the Swalot and poked it rather hard in the back. “ OI! Wake up before we hurt you! ” “ whuh? ” “ Thank you. Now, would you please stop eating evolutionary stones? Other people need those, you know. ” “ dave no stop eating. dave like pretty rocks. pretty rocks yummy. ” Imiti sighed. “ Dave, there are plenty of other things a Swalot can eat. Why don’t you let us take you outside? ” “ dave no want outside. dave like here. dave want you go away. ” With that, the Swalot shot a blob of whatever it had in its stomach. A single drop grazed Imiti on the arm and AAAAAUUUGGGHHH THE PAIN. The few brain cells that Imiti had that were not busy screaming realized that that move was Gunk Shot. This was quite the Swalot. Hearing Imiti scream, Celsus enacted an Aqua Ring. The wound was probably very dirty and contained quite a bit of acid, but it was a small one. A few minutes with Aqua Ring active should be enough. Feeling the healing properties of the water come into effect, Imiti relaxed noticeably. Seeing as how his current move set apparently wasn’t enough, he grabbed one of his two remaining TMs at random. The move was Fire Blast. Sure, that would work. Having absorbed the TM’s energy, Imiti created a ball of fire in his hand, testing his newfound ability. Backing up a few steps, he threw the ball at the Swalot. In response, the Swalot opened its mouth and swallowed it. Imiti waited for the explosion— —but it never happened. The Swalot had apparently extinguished the attack with its face. “ dave like spicy food. dave think spicy food spicy. ” The Swalot fired another Gunk Shot at the team, this one headed straight for Imiti. Specifically, the middle of his torso area. There was no conceivable way he could fully dodge that, not with his physical ability. So he simply put his entire mental strength into make a wall between me and the attack. And it worked. The attack still forced Imiti and Celsus back a couple of meters from the impact, but it worked. “ Wait, what? ” Had Imiti really blocked the attack with nothing but sheer mental strength? He’d…never actually done anything like that before. “ Hey, nice job with the Barrier. ” …Never mind. Though the fact that he knew Barrier was a surprise. Imiti created another Fire blast and sent it at the Swalot, and then, when it ate that, he fired yet another one at a point just above the Swalot’s head. When the Poison type tried to eat that one, the explosion happened just above it. Half the blast hit the Swalot. It left a bright magenta burn mark. “ dave think you mean. dave no like you! ” The Swalot fired another Gunk Shot, which Imiti blocked now that he actually knew he could. A third Fire Blast followed, this one aimed at the Swalot’s feet. The Swalot wasn’t able to open its mouth low enough and got a mouthful of fire. “ you bad. dave mad! ” “ Oh, now you’ve done it. ” “ Hey, you be quiet. By the way, that thing you did earlier? ” “ Yeah? ” “ Do it again. ” Imiti pointed Celsus at the Swalot. There was a loud WHUMP as the Swalot hit the floor rather hard. “ hey. you cheating. ” The Swalot got back up and readied yet another Gunk Shot, before falling down again. “ Hey, I’ve got him on the ground here, trying to imitate me. Please hurry up and finish the mission. At this point I really don’t care how. ” Imiti complied, teleporting right in front of the Swalot. A ball of fire appeared in his hand. “ Move and I’ll burn you.” The Swalot, not exactly being an intellectual, decided to move anyway. He didn’t move fast enough though—Imiti touched the Exploration Badge and they were at the guild, prisoner in tow.

* * * "Woah! Hey!" The Poliwhirl hopped back with a start when Imiti reappeared. "Oh... You got him." He started poking the creature sharply. "Serves you right for eating all our stones." He poked the Swalot a few times before he found his finger inside of it's mouth, at which point he violently recoiled and shook his finger off."Geeze..." He raised his hand to wave over a Magnemite. "Bzzt. This is the one?" He nodded in return. "Yeah, this is the one who was messing up the mines." The Magnemite nodded. "Bzzt. He'll be relocated. Thank you for your assistance."
With that, several more Magnemites appeared. Together, they hoisted the Swalot up and away. The Poliwhirl extracted a small figurine from a bag that hung around his shoulder. "This should suffice, I believe?" The depleted stone glittered with a fantastic light as a glimpse of the sun came through the windows. It was definitely worth the effort. "I made it myself."
The Poliwhirl stood, somewhat awkwardly, near the pair. He seemed to have something to say. "Do you think I could join your team? I don't think I'll be able to find a water stone in the mines, so I need some money to buy one. You guys often get paid for your work, right?"
One of the Lombre showed up as well, also seeking employment and shelter within the Kingdom. Of course, only one could come back with them. If either.

Imiti--- Celsus" Alright," Imiti said, looking at the Poliwhirl. " Sure. Why don't you join us? And you,", he said, turning to the Lombre, " Why don't you start a new team? I'm pretty sure the Guild would be happy to take you in. Especially since the Guildmaster's not all that cautious from what I've seen..."

It's kind of dangerous, so if you escort me there I'll let you pick a stone to take back with you." Dungeon: Gemstone mines Floors: The secret area is on the last floor! Rewards: Choice of Evolutionary Stone + 5 White Gummis I'm going to take this mission just for fun, and because I think it needs to be completed by someone, and since so many people have backed down I figured I'd give it my best shot. ^ ^

Era stood eagerly peering up at the missions board, Ethfael by her side. The Pichu was feeling rather stir crazy from sitting around the Team Room for a month. She had finally gotten the okay from the doctors that she could go out again, provided she didn't do anything “too strenuous.” Well no one had specifically defined what was classified as too strenuous, so at the first chance she got she convinced Ethfael to come with her on a mission. The Dratini had been slightly reluctant, but she had finally managed to convince him that she really wasn't going to topple over unconscious at any second. The pain in her sprained paw was all but gone now, so she felt that she was up to whatever challenge a normal mission would have in store for her. The board was full as usual of pleas, queries, and requests from the Pokemon of the Kingdom, and Era looked through them carefully searching for something that suited her interest. ”How about this one,” she ventured at last, pulling a low hanging notice off the board. ”It looks like it could be interesting.” The client was an Eevee, which already had caught her interest, along with the supposed cavern of Evolutionary Stones. She didn't really need them, but the thought intrigued her as something that would be curious to see. Ethfael read the notice over carefully taking note of his contents. ”This would take us to the depths of the mines,” he said thoughtfully, ”Are you certain that you can deal with that so soon after you've recovered from your injury.” His concern for Era was great, considering all of the trouble she had managed to get herself into without even trying. It wasn't good for someone like her to constantly be jumping out to the forefront of danger, and he feared if she kept it up she would be killed, which he couldn't even bear to think about. Era nodded determinedly, ”I can handle It Ethfael,” she told him brightly, ”And with you by my side, I think we can do anything we set our minds to.” Ethfael ducked his head to hide a blush that came over his face; how could she say things like that so blatantly? Coughing slightly to recover, he looked back up to spot her smiling at him. ”Come on,” she said, ”Let's go tell the others.”

When they laid the mission down for the others to read, the entire team gathered round to take a look. Rivia poked the paper with her tiny paw as if to ask, what's this? Era laughed patting the baby Sandshrew on the head, ”This is a mission Rivia,” she told the child, ”One day when you're older you can come with us and help us too.” The Sandshrew beamed delightedly, cooing as she nuzzled up against Era contentedly, seeming to be satisfied. Era looked fondly at the girl before looking up at the others, ”Ethfael and I were thinking about flying this one solo if that's alright with you.” Sereni nodded with a smile, ”That's fine by me,” she said, ”I've been meaning to take a day off anyway. It's no good to overwork yourself.” The Lanturn had a book that she'd been meaning to catch up on for a while now, but every time she picked it up an alarm rang or someone asked her to do something, so she looked forward to the promise of finishing it. ”Erinn can stay and help me watch the kids too.” ”Aw no fair!” the Paras protested, ”I never get to-” Sereni cut him of by putting a fin over his mouth, eliciting a great deal of protest from Erinn, ”MMMMM! MMMmmmmMMMMmmmmMmmmmmMMMMMM!” Era looked a bit concerned at Sereni's actions, but the Lanturn smiled cheerfully. ”Don't worry about him, you can go ahead,” she encouraged them. Era looked very doubtful but agreed, wondering why Sereni was so set on the idea. ”Go on, go on!” she said, picking up the mission paper and handing it over to Era before ushering them out the door. ”Have fun!” she called after them as she shut the door. Both Era and Ethfael exchanged a glance, it wasn't like Sereni to act like that. ”That was...” Era began. ”Decidedly odd,” Ethfael finished. Era nodded in agreement, and they remained where they stood curiously for a few moments before shrugging it off and heading off to meet their client.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Era and Ethfael arrived at the entrance to the mines to find no one there. ”Maybe he's just late?” Era suggested after they checked around to see if there was any sign of him. It was an odd thing, normally the client was waiting for them at the place that they specified, but apparently not this time. Era sat down on the ground as the time ticked by and Ethfael began to pace rather irritably. There was no sign of their client, approaching or otherwise and Era began to worry. ”You don't think that he got lost, do you?” she asked Ethfael, ”Or what if he went ahead and got trapped inside?” Ethfael frowned and patted Era on the head with his tail. ”You thinking this over too much,” he told her, ”I'm sure our client's just fine, wherever he is. He probably just took a bit long to get ready.” Era seemed to be a bit appeased although she still continued to shoot nervous glances towards the entrance to the mines. ”Really,” he assured her, ”I'm positive that he's fine.” As it turned out, Ethfael was right, not more than fifteen minutes later an Eevee appeared in the distance, running quickly. Era stood up, looking relieved, and Ethfael let out a silent sigh of relief; their client was here after all. The Eevee hurried over to them with a sheepish look on his face. He paused to catch his breath before addressing them both. ”I'm so sorry!” he blurted, as soon as he could get the breath out, ”I ran into a bit of trouble on the way here, so it took me a while to deal with it. I really didn't mean to keep you waiting!” Era smiled warmly at the Eevee, she could tell that he was a bit younger than herself, about the same age as Erinn from the sound of his voice, and clearly he was very sorry. ”It's alright,” she told him brightly, ”I'm just glad you're alright, we were starting to worry.” The Eevee smiled back, ”I'm fine,” he said, ”Thank you so much for being here. I'm Riley by the way.” ”I'm Era and my partner's name is Ethfael,” she told him brightly. He was a rather likable Eevee. ”We're happy to be here, it is our job after all,” she added, extending a hand. Riley took it with a grin in his own paw and shook it. ”Well that's great, I think we'll make a great team,” he said cheerfully, seeming to relax. ”So, what do you say we go tackle this mine?” he asked. Era laughed a bit at his enthusiasm and Riley grinned again. ”Hey wait a sec, what's that?” he asked, leaning over her shoulder and returning to her front with a white carnation in his mouth. He set it down and winked, ”You had a flower stuck in your tail,” Era gasped in surprise at the trick and looked at the flower in awe, ”You're a magician?” she asked him wonderingly. ”It's more a hobby than anything,” Riley replied with a laugh, ”But I do have a bit of a knack for it.” He tucked the flower behind her ear and she smiled, charmed by his demeanor. ”Come on,” he beckoned both of them, ”Let's go!” Era laughed and looked at Ethfael with a grin, ”Looks like we're in for a good time,” she said brightly, before hurrying to catch up to Riley as he headed inside. Ethfael watched the Eevee darkly, displeased that Era had taken such an immediate liking to him. Why do I feel so protective of her? he wondered, puzzled. It was one thing to dislike someone if they did something to upset you, but the Eevee hadn't done anything of the sort, in fact probably doing the opposite, yet the way he and Era were chatting so animatedly as the waited for him was...irksome. Knowing that he'd just have to make the best of it, Ethfael went to join them. His emotions were too puzzling to consider when there was a client he needed to aid, even if the client was the problem. It wasn't in Ethfael's nature to lose his temper over little things, and that wasn't going to change, despite the strange pull on his heartstrings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
”This place is pretty desolate, don't you think?” Riley said as the group wandered through one part of the maze of tunnels that made up the mines. The tunnels didn't get much natural light, and the light from the entrance behind them had finally faded, leaving it rather dark aside from torches that lit the paths courtesy of the Pokemon that made their homes here. ”It's been deserted for a long time,” Ethfael replied, ”And mines were never built to be pretty, even when they were in use. They were built to be efficient. The Pokemon who live here probably don't keep to the paths but rather they've probably made burrows or nests further in.” Ethfael naturally had read up on the area before they came to find out about what they were up against. He found the mines rather interesting considering the history that they possessed, but it was a bit unnerving, even to him, that there was no sign of life anywhere.
Riley seemed to think this over and then shrugged, ”I guess you're right, but you have to admit that this place is kind of creepy.” He shuddered a bit as a gust of wind blew through the mine, sending chills down his spine. ”There are a lot of stories about this place too, and why it was deserted. Some say it's haunted, and that there was a cave-in that caused it to be declared dangerous and unsafe for the miners. Others say that it's cursed, and the curse spreads to anyone who tries to take a Stone...” The Eevee's ears drooped and his fur bristled slightly in fear; clearly he didn't entirely disbelieve the rumors.
Era shivered slightly, ”Those are scary stories,” she said. That type of story didn't sit well with the Pichu and she looked around nervously, questioning how safe they actually were in this foreboding place.
”That's all they are,” Ethfael said, ”Stories, nothing else. What actually happened was far less interesting. The Stones simply ran out. The miners had drained the soil of all its resources, and all of the large amounts of Stones were gone, so they left. There are some Stones remaining but they're rare and hard to find. It takes a very lucky streak to find even one, and you're not guaranteed what type of Evolutionary Stone it will be.”
Era felt better listening to Ethfael explain it, and a bit of the menace seemed to recede as a face was put to the abandonment of the mines. Riley seemed to feel the same way and his ears perked back up slightly, ”That's good to hear,” he said, ”But all the same I'm glad you guys are here to keep me company.”
The torches provided steady light down the pathway and they traveled contentedly in silence for a while until they came across a bend in the path. Era was in the lead and heard the hushed murmur of voices coming from the path. She put a paw to her lips to hush the others and they all listened to the noise. ”Hurry up! an enthusiastic voice said, I can almost see it!”
”Are you sure?” a different voice asked, ”Is it really there?”
”Yes I'm sure!” the first voice replied, ”I can feel it!” Era peered around the corner with Riley and Ethfael close behind and they spotted a pair of Vulpix digging intently at the wall. They both were fervently excited over something and the dirt flew against the opposite wall as they dug. ”We're so lucky!” the one on the left, who's voice was the one of the first to speak, ”Who'd have thought we'd find a Fire Stone in this old mining place!”
Riley blinked with surprise at the words of the Vulpix, and before Era or Ethfael could stop him, he had wandered forward to take a look. The Vulpix on the right looked up, her fur bristling, ”Hey you, back off,” she growled, ”This is our Fire Stone, we found it fair and square.” The other Vulpix looked up and swallowed nervously, matching his sister's pose, but he didn't say anything, clearly nervous.
”I didn't want to take your Stone!” Riley said, backing up nervously, ”I just wanted to lo-”
”That's enough out of you!” the aggressive Vulpix snapped, ”Either turn your tail around and leave us alone or you'll have to fight us. We've been searching for this Stone for years and we're not about to let some Eevee take it away! You can evolve with almost any Stone, so just leave!”
Riley bristled at the Vulpix's words, stepping forward. He clearly did not take well to having his pride wounded. ”I don't want your Stone already, but I am going past, and there's nothing you can do about it.
”Hey sis, I think he means business,” the less confident Vulpix stammered, but his sister had already pounced on Riley. Era and Ethfael both came out from behind the corner, ready to defend their client, but Riley had already forced the Vulpix off him by giving it a precise Bite to the ear. The Vulpix leaped back and spat an Ember attack at Riley, but Ethfael was on it, his Extremespeed letting him hit the Vulpix enough as it attacked to have the fire blaze just past Riley.
The other Vulpix yelped as Era eyed it and shot an Ember at her as well, she dodged to the side and shot a Swift Attack at the pair, both of them yelping as they were pelted by the star-shaped rays. Ethfael used Slam, crashing into the older one who promptly fell on her brother, creating a tangled mess of Vulpix. ”Get off me!” the girl growled.
”I can't!” the boy wailed, beginning to whimper. ”I didn't even want to fight in the first place!”
”They were going to take our Fire Stone you idiot!”
”But...But...But...”
”Hold on!” Ethfael shouted, causing everyone there to jump. The Vulpix disentangled themselves and sat to look at him; the girl haughtily and the boy meekly. ”We're not here to steal your Fire Stone. If we were, one of us would have taken it while the others were fighting.” The girl looked a bit taken aback by that comment, but tried to recover quickly and not let her shock show. ”All we want is to go into the mine, we're explorers.” Ethfael's final comment brought a change about the Vulpix. The boy perked up, eyes shining, and his sister looked both dismayed and shameful at once. ”Wow! Real explorers! I've never met an explorer before!” the boy Vulpix said, then remembering the fight ducked his head. ”Sorry we attacked you.”
Era laughed, reminded of a certain Ratatta from the very first mission she and Ethfael took. ”It's alright, just don't always think that other people are the bad guys.”
”Well, it wasn't really that,” he replied, ”It's just, my sister's wanted to evolve for a really really long time, and we've been searching for a Fire Stone for ages. I finally picked up the scent of one around here, so she didn't want someone else to take her chance to evolve.”
The other Vulpix was blushing redder than her fur by this point, ”Why did you say that?”
”It's the truth, that's why,” the boy replied, ”Hey! Maybe you guys can help us with it! It's a little stuck.” He led them over to the wall where they had been digging and pointed to the spot. ”See, you can just barely see the edge, but it's stuck really tightly.” Ethfael looked it over then said, ”I think I can handle it if you and your sister stand back.” Noticing the inquisitive looks on their faces he added, ”It involves water.” At that, the two Vulpix scurried back but peered over closely to watch from their safety zone. Ethfael hit the wall with Aqua Tail, causing the dirt to soften slightly, and a slight hissing sound to be heard. He smiled slightly and repeated the motion, this time causing a louder hissing sound. After a third repetition, the soil was mud and Era reached to grab the Fire Stone which was only slightly smaller than herself.
”Hot! Hot!” she said setting it down on the ground quickly and blowing on her paws. The flame marking on the Fire Stone shone brightly, and it radiated heat. Both of the Vulpix and Riley were staring at it, clearly all feeling its power. Era smiled slightly once her hands were cooler, ”Well, go ahead,” she urged the Vulpix.
The girl Vulpix stepped forward slowly, all of the others watching. She stepped over to the Fire Stone and breathed in deeply, looking a little nervous. Era gave her a nod of reassurance and the girl bent down, touching her nose to the Fire Stone. A brilliant flash of fire rose up, engulfing the Vulpix and causing all the others to close their eyes from the brilliance of the light as it occurred. When they were able to look back, a graceful Ninetails stood before them. ”Wow! Sis you're so cool!” the Vulpix said happily, bouncing up and down.
”Thank you explorers,” the newly evolved Ninetails said, ”You have my gratitude. I'll never forget this.” She nodded once to them, seeming to have gained a more level head with evolution, and then flicked her tails slightly. ”Come on, we have to go home,” she told her brother, who trotted over to her contentedly. He waved goodbye to them, and then the pair headed off down the tunnel, leaving Era, Ethfael, and Riley alone.
Riley turned to them with a hint of awe in his eyes, ”You guys were so cool!” he said, ”I thought for sure they were going to fight us until we forced them to back down, but you figured it out without even hurting them more than you had to!”
Era smiled at his enthusiasm, ”Well it's always better to try and talk than to fight in our opinion. Pokemon weren't meant to fight each other, we're supposed to get along. A couple of Vulpix who had a misunderstanding don't make them an enemy.” It was almost a policy that she and Ethfael followed, if violence can be avoided, then try to avoid it, but don't be afraid to attack if diplomacy fails. Riley fell silent, and a pensive look came into his eyes as if he was think about something intently. ”That reminds me!” Era said thinking of the Vulpix and the Fire Stone, ”You said that you wanted to evolve in your request, but what do you want to evolve into?”
Riley met her eyes with a slight look of chagrin on his face. ”Quite honestly, I don't know,” he said, ”My parents have been pressuring me to do it for a while now, so I figured I'd go to the place that they told me about, and hope that I'd figure something out there.” His ears drooped slightly and he sighed, ”I know that if I take a stone it will evolve me, like that Vulpix you helped back there, but I don't know what type of change I want.”
Era paused to pat him on the back, trying to cheer him up with a smile, ”I'm sure you'll make the right choice, whatever you want to be. Anything you choose is sure to be magnificent, Flareon has a body temperature hotter than lava at 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit; Vaporeon can turn into pure water whenever its necessary; Jolteon has massive amounts electricity that flow in its veins amounting to over 10,000 volt power; Espeon can sense very sensitive psychic waves with its fur and predict the weather, or even the moves of its enemies; Umbreon can meld into the shadows when it stalks is prey; Leafeon takes energy from sunlight to produce clean air; Glaceon can control ice and even lower the temperature of the atmosphere around it; all of them are really amazing!”
”I know, I know!” Riley said, ”That's why it's so hard to decide! I've mulled it around in my head for a long time and I still don't know which suits me!” He paused for a moment as if hesitant, and then added, ”It was my parents who persuaded me to post the request to the Guilds. I'd been telling them I was too scared of this place to come find the Stones, and even ran away when they tried to take me themselves, so they had me get a Rescue Team from the Guild to help me. They think that if I'm forced to be around the Stones, I'll have to choose one eventually. The Stones call to me, you know.”
Era nodded sympathetically, understanding what he felt, if only a little. ”Yes, I know what you mean,” she said, ”I have a Thunder Stone, and even though I'm just a Pichu I can feel its power every time I touch it, When I evolve, I know that it will change me if I ever touch it again. Evolving is a strange thing.”
”Don't I know it,” Riley replied, ”I just hope I make the right choice when it comes to it.”
”I'm sure you'll be happy with what you choose,” Era told him, ”Every Pokemon has a place deep inside, that tells them when they're ready to evolve, and if they have a choice, what they want to be. It's right there,” she said, poking his fur right over his heart.
Riley looked startled for a moment, and he blushed slightly, ”Thanks Era,” he said, then, quickly he touched his nose to her cheek in a puppy-like kiss. Era reddened a bit and both of them ducked their heads, each unable to meet the others' eyes.
Ethfael felt a sudden burst of unexpected anger at the exchange and glared at the Eevee. What did he think he was doing? He wasn't even a member of their Team and they'd only been together for a little while, what had brought this on? Icily, he stepped between Era and Riley causing them both to look at him awkwardly. ”Isn't it about time we moved on?” he said coldly, looking darkly at Riley.
”Yes! You're right!” Era said, seeming to leap at the suggestion. ”We've got a long way to go, come on!” She dashed forward, disappearing down the tunnel without another word, leaving Ethfael and Riley alone. Ethfael, still sore about the kiss nodded coldly for Riley to go first. The Eevee didn't need another prompt, and skittered off, following Era, clearly aware that Ethfael wasn't happy. Ethfael took a few deep breaths, trying to soothe his inexplicable anger. What was wrong with him? He didn't lose control of his emotions like this, so what strange specter was causing him to now? Shaking his head, he began to head towards the other two, still stinging with resentment towards the Eevee.
The passage was very curved and complex, the effect only enhancing the further they traveled inwards. The wooden beams which supported the ceiling to keep it from caving in grew progressively more frequent, hinting that they were entirely inside the earth by now, and this caused discomfort in all three of them, none of them being Ground or Rock Pokemon, and all unused to being within the earth. Era and Riley were walking in slightly awkward silence, and Ethfael fumed silently not far behind them. All in all, a rather unhappy sight as a whole.
Era was beginning to have a slight panic attack. The earth surrounding her made her feel slightly claustrophobic, and she wanted to see the sun instead of the glaring torchlight. She was certain that she could hear Ground-Types moving around somewhere from sounds that she heard in the wall. ”Era,” Ethfael said gently, ”Are you alright?”
Era looked at him in surprise only to find that both he and Riley had stopped and were looking at her in concern. Then she realized that she must have stopped moving and was breathing so rapidly she almost was hyperventilating. Catching her breath she put a paw against Ethfael to steady herself. It was fine, Ethfael was here if any Ground-Types came, she could relax. ”Fine,” she said, taking deep breaths, ”Just fine.”
”Are you sure?” he asked, touching his tail to her forehead. Ethfael was concerned for her well-being once more, her strange actions reminding him that she had started off this mission in a less than average state of health and he didn't want her to get worse thanks to his lenience. She didn't feel feverish, and aside from being a bit pale she seemed okay, but it never hurt to check.
”Yes,” she said to both of them, ”I was just a bit nervous.” She laughed a bit nervously, ”Being underground isn't really my thing.” Her cheeks sparked slightly with electricity, as if to prove her point, and the other two seemed to relax a bit. She was an Electric-Type in a land of Ground-Types; it was understandable that she wouldn't be to happy with that.
”Don't worry about the Ground Types,” Riley said, cheer back in his voice, ”They mostly keep to themselves, right? So why should they attack us when we're not bothering them?” Era nodded a bit, although she still looked unconvinced and Riley smiled. ”Cheer up Era, what are the odds that something really bad is going to happen? The optimistic words of the Eevee were spoken too soon apparently, for no more than a moment later a trio of Diglett who popped out of the ground their eyes fixed on Era with unhappy expressions. ”I stand corrected,” Riley said glumly, and then the trio attacked.
Era stood stock still, quivering as the Diglett charged her, memories of her past haunting her as she remembered being much younger and having a Dugtrio attack her. Ethfael jumped in front of her, hitting the closest Diglett across the face with Aqua Tail. The little Pokemon didn't stand a chance against the water that doused it and crumpled to the ground instantly, but its companions ducked under the ground to avoid the fate of their friend. ”Look out!” Riley cried, tackling Era and pushing her to the side. A Diglett burst up from the ground right where Era had stood, and Riley whirled around, Quick Attack propelling him into the miscreant Diglett. Its partner burst up underneath him, and sent the brave Eevee flying against the wall. Ethfael swept in for the kill, a Dragon Rage hot in his throat, and blasted the attacker into the ground again, which left only one Diglett.
Era finally felt motion creep back into her limbs as she eyed the final Diglett, aiming a Swift Attack at it. Just before it hit though, the Diglett ducked underground. The Diglett began taunting them, popping up here and there from underground and then disappearing before they could get a good shot at it. Ethfael frowned with concentration, trying to find a pattern to its movement but coming up blank. It was completely erratic and he couldn't find a pattern no matter how hard he tried. The Diglett popped up in front of them with a grin, and then the floor beneath Era and Ethfael crumbled and they found themselves suddenly falling down a pit.
Riley's eyes widened in dismay as he saw them fall, and flinched as he heard the thud, laying as still as he possibly could and formulating a plan. The Diglett was leering down at Era and Ethfael who were both silent, making him very worried. He stood carefully, still stinging a bit from being thrown against the wall, but pleased that the Diglett paid him no notice and closed his eyes. A deck of mysterious looking playing cards appeared, shuffling themselves and arranging them in the air. Riley's ear twitched in concentration, and he stood on his hind paws to choose the a card from the center of the array, eyes opening as he touched it. The instant contact was made, the other cards vanished, leaving only the card which Riley took in his mouth. Focused on his target, Riley aimed at the Diglett and it turned around, seeming to foresee that something was about to happen. The Diglett just had enough time to watch its doom as Riley threw the card with lethal precision and it sliced across the Diglett, causing the creature to slump to the ground unconscious by the sudden pain. The card stuck into the wall across the cave, an Ace of Clubs visible on its other side; a Trump Card.
”Era! Ethfael!” Riley shouted, hurrying over to the hole, ”Are you alright?!” The two in question were lying sprawled on the ground trying to disentangle themselves from one another. Era had fallen on top of Ethfael, who had managed to wrap himself partially around Era on the way down. Both of them looked rather hurt, but there didn't seem to be any permanent damage although Era seemed to be wincing a bit when she managed to stand up and both were decidedly ruffled.
”We're alright!” Era called back, waving to him. Arceus her paw hurt, and she felt almost as battered as bruised as when she'd gotten the injury in the first place, but at least she hadn't done more damage to her paw. She winced a bit as she tried to put more weight on it, and she tried to brush it off but Ethfael was already at her side.
”Pardon me for doubting the sincerity of that statement,” he said gently, and Era smiled weakly, leaning against him, grateful for the support. They both looked up at the figure of Riley who was very far away and looking quite concerned. ”We should be alright in a few minutes,” Ethfael called up to him, ”More importantly, how are we going to get up to where you are?”
Riley looked distressed, clearly uncertain of what to do, ”I could try to find some help,” he said. ”You're really far down thanks to that Diglett.” The Eevee's fur was bristling in anger again and he seemed quite furious. ”Don't worry! I'll figure out a way to help you!”
”Excuse me,” a delicate voice said from the shadows, and both Era and Ethfael turned to see a Kirlia watching them curiously, ”I couldn't help but overhear your predicament.” She moved close to them, each step with the grace and precision of a dancer. ”The Diglett around here are very disagreeable,” she said lightly, ”I'm very sorry that you had to be troubled by them.”
Era found herself in awe of the serene Kirlia before them, amazed that fortune had smiled upon them. ”No, no, we're sorry for disturbing them,” she insisted, ”We were helping out a friend and came exploring here. He's up there right now.”
”They Diglett are very touchy here,” the Kirlia said gently, ”I'm certain that you were not the ones at fault. These mines belong to no one and are shared freely by many Pokemon, explorers are welcome so long as they don't cause trouble.” She smiled serenely at Era and Ethfael, ”I will return you to your friend if you so wish it.”
Ethfael had fallen quite silent at the sight of the Kirlia, perhaps more astounded than Era at the turn their luck had taken. He regained his voice then and responded to her statement, ”We would be very grateful for that.” Looking at Era he said, ”Hold on tightly.” He wrapped himself around her, recalling that for Pokemon unlike those who were instated by the Guild, Teleport required contact, so he felt that he should make it as easy for the Kirlia as possible. It was also slightly in his own selfish interests though, for he didn't want to let Era out of his sight if at all possible. The Pichu hugged him tighter around the neck, and he nodded to the Kirlia.
Delicately, the Kirlia strode over to where they were, a smile directed towards Ethfael on her face. ”This will only take a moment,” she assured him then closed her eyes and touched her hands to each of them. In an instant their surroundings shifted and melded into each other, only to solidify once more as the area where they'd been when fighting the Diglett.
Riley looked over in surprise, having been pacing anxiously at the edge of the hole. ”You're alright!” he cried, bounding over to them in delight. ”How did you get out? I was-” he cut off as he noticed the Kirlia smiling at his delight. ”Did you help them,” he asked, to which she responded with a nod. He beamed at her cheerily ”Thank you so much Miss!”
”It was no trouble at all,” she said with a twirl and a curtsy, ”It was the least I could do to make up for those Diglett's terrible behavior. It was truly inexcusable.”
Ethfael unwrapped himself from Era who shyly took a step away from him. This was strange, why should she feel shy around Ethfael, he was her best and most trusted friend, so why did she suddenly feel self-conscious and shy as though she was embarrassed. She felt a little dizzy still and steadied herself slightly, only have a few volts of electricity spark from her cheeks. What had happened when she fell? She never let off sparks unintentionally, she'd grown out of that long ago, so why now? Maybe I did something to my head when I fell down there, she thought rather sardonically.
The Kirlia was about to say something to them, perhaps a farewell, when the sound of footsteps was heard headed towards them. A Togetic came out of the shadows, running towards them, its wings flapping urgently. ”We've got trouble!” The Togetic called out when it spotted them waving her arms frantically. ”You have to come back! They're attacking again!” A look of deep concern crossed the Kirlia's face and she and the Togetic began conversing very urgently as Era, Ethfael, and Riley looked on.
”Guys, I think we should help them.” Era said. She was genuinely concerned and wanted to help the Kirlia. The other Pokemon had done so much for them, so she felt that helping her out in turn would be a good thing. ”Please, they look really worried!” she entreated them.
Ethfael sighed, ”Very well, we do owe them a hand after all.” Era brightened up with a smile and he smiled slightly back. Going over to the still conversing Kirlia and Togetic he cleared his throat to get their attention. ”Excuse me ladies, my friend and I are members of a Rescue Team, the Team leaders in fact, and we were wondering if we could be of any assistance to you.”
The Togetic brightened a look of sheer delight on her face, ”You're leaders of an actual Rescue Team? What good fortune!”
The Kirlia looked a bit hesitant at the idea though, ”We don't want to trouble you, not when you've just had to deal with the Diglett. This group is far worse than they are, I assure you.”
Era walked over to chime in after Ethfael, “Really, it is our job to take care of this type of thing Miss. We're on an exploration right now, but that doesn't mean we don't have time to go and help other Pokemon. Please let us help you.” She smiled at the Kirlia, trying to ease her nerves, ”Think nothing of it, we want to do it.” Ethfael nodded his agreement, and they both waited hoping for the Kirlia's assent.
”Please, we need to accept their help,” the Togetic said, almost pleading with the Kirlia, ”This is no time for pride, we have no choice.”
The Kirlia nodded with a sigh, and then bowed her head to them. ”Very well, if you insist, then we will accept your help,” she sighed, I take care of several younger Pokemon who have no other home to go to, but recently a rogue group of Nuzleaf have been attacking us. They seem to think it's a game, a laugh to torment young Pokemon who can defend themselves! We've been trying to stop them, but every time we come close, they manage to escape.”
”How long has this been going on?” Ethfael inquired, ”It sounds like a very serious problem.”
”It didn't get bad until very recently,” the Kirlia replied sadly, “The gang must have formed a while ago, but they've come to attack us every day for the past week. The children are terrified of them of course, but we can't hold them off on our own.”
”Consider us on the job!” Era said determinedly, ”We'll do our best to help you out.”
”Thank you so much,” the Kirlia said spinning around delightedly.
”Come on, follow us!” the Togetic called, already hurrying down the tunnel. ”It's not very far!” The Kirlia hurried after her, even at a great speed still managing to look graceful.
Era turned back to look at Riley who met her eyes with a smile. ”I'm sorry Riley,” she said to him, realizing that they hadn't even asked his opinion, ”We didn't even ask you although you're our client.” She ducked her head in shame at her lack of logic, only to have a friendly paw tap her on the shoulder.
”Why should you apologize?” Riley said, paw on her shoulder and a smile on his face, ”You're going to go help someone and you're apologizing? That seems like a noble cause to me.” His grin spread across his face as Era looked shocked, ”Come on, I'm thrilled! I get to see what real Rescue Teams do firsthand!” He winked and tapped the flower which still was tucked behind her ear, ”You can handle it, I know, and I'll be right there beside you guys to help if I can.”
Era blushed a bit but smiled, ”Thank you for being so understanding,” she said, giving him a hug. Riley's grin widened, but he said nothing, simply turning and going over to grab his card from the wall. He took it in his mouth and returned to Era and Ethfael. ”What's the card for Riley?” Era asked with curiousity.
”Oh nothing,” he replied after sitting and taking the card in his paw. ”Now you see it...” he said, showing them both the Ace of Clubs and then scrunching it up in his paw, ”Now you don't.” He opened his paw to blow a pawful of sparkles at them where they fell around them like snowflakes.
Era applauded and Ethfael simply glared at the ground. Looking up he gestured to to tunnel with his tail, ”We should hurry up,” he said, ”Those two are counting on our help, and we promised to give it to them.” The other two nodded and he led the way down the path in the direction which the Togetic and Kirlia had gone.
The Togetic was waiting for them impatiently at a bend in the tunnel. ”There you are!” she tittered, ”We were afraid we'd lost you somehow. I waited behind and sent Lydia down ahead of us. Come along! Hurry! Hurry!” She took the lead, guiding them through the tunnels masterfully, since she'd obviously been navigated them for quite some time. The tunnels had no particular landmarks, being created for mining and mining only when it all came down to it, and yet she knew exactly where to go. The Togetic paused at one of the many cross-sections and pulled at a board. It came loose immediately much to the trio's surprise and she gestured for them to enter.
Behind the loose slat was an amazing sight to behold, causing both Era and Riley to gasp, and even making Ethfael yield a look showing that he had been impressed. A huge space, carved so that it was impossible to tell from where they stood where it ended, took precedence within and there were whole houses constructed out of the earth itself and bits of stone. It was brightly lit with torches and would have looked rather welcoming if it weren't for the obvious lack of life in the place. All of the buildings were shut up and dark, and no Pokemon were present on the streets; clearly the city was hiding from something. ”Everyone hides away when the gang comes to town,” the Togetic informed them with a shudder, ”No one dares to cross their path.” She wrung her hands with a sigh, ”They are such terrible Pokemon, really it's just a shame.”
Era and Ethfael surveyed the scene with a cool gaze, Riley peeking up behind them to look as well. ”Do you know where we might be able to find them?” Ethfael asked after coming to a blank as to any sign of trouble or panic. It really was eerie; all that was there was nothing.
”I'm not sure...” the Togetic murmured, ”Normally you can tell... Oh! I'm no good at this, I just can't stand this pressure!” She moaned slightly, looking on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and Riley came over patting her gently and giving support. Era gave him a smile of thanks which he returned with one of his own and she and Ethfael began to search the area.
Ethfael headed to the nearest house and knocked on the door. To his surprise it swung open as he knocked, and he gestured for Era to join him, which she did silently. Together they made their way into the house to find that it was empty. The strangest part was that it looked like the residents had dropped what they were doing and left, vanishing without a trace. A pair of knitting needles had fallen onto the yarn which they were sowing, a half eaten apple sat on the table, and various scuff marks were present on the floor. ”It's almost like they left without warning,” Era said grimly.
”Perhaps because they had no choice.” Ethfael replied. The pair split up then, checking the surrounding houses for any signs of life and coming up with the same scenes within all of the houses. ”They must all have gone farther into the city,” Ethfael reported when he and Era returned to Riley and the Togetic, ”We have no choice but to follow. There's certain to be trouble, whatever is going on.”
The further they traveled, the less promising their surroundings appeared. There were evident signs of forced removals from homes as they kept going. Doors were left entirely ajar, things were scattered in the streets, and faint rumblings of sound could be heard in the distance. The more ominous it grew, the more dark the expressions on Era and Ethfael's faces grew, the more concerned Riley looked, and the more distraught the Togetic became. ”This is awful!” the Togetic sobbed, ”Why did we ever trust those terrible Nuzleaf?!” Her sobbing grew more and more hysterical as they moved on, until it was loud enough to cause them to stop to try and soothe her for fear of being discovered.
”Calm down,” Era said gently to the Togetic, patting her on her bowed head. ”We don't even know whether it was caused by the Nuzleaf or not, or what they're doing. It's alright, Ethfael and I have dealt with this type of situation before, we can handle it.”
”No, no...!” the Togetic moaned through her tears, ”They told us that the next time we sent them away they would start taking the children. I should have listened to them, should have told someone, but I didn't and now they've surely got them!” Her tears escalated and she cradled her head in her hands, ”Now Lydia has vanished too, and there's no sign of any of the children or the others! What are we going to do?”
Ethfael was beginning to feel uneasy as he watched the Togetic; it was dangerous to be loud since they had no idea who or what they were going to encounter, only that it probably wouldn't be friendly. ”Gangs, especially those of miscreant teenagers rarely carry out such threats,” he said, ”But please Miss, hush or we'll be spotted!” Riley cleared his throat and pointed, causing them all to turn and look down the street, where dark figures were becoming visible. Ethfael cursed internally before taking charge, ”Miss Togetic, please take shelter in the house over there, Riley, go with her for both your safety and hers. Era and I are ready to face whatever comes our way.” Riley and Era nodded and the Togetic whimpered a bit but didn't protest. They broke off, and once Era and Ethfael saw their client and the Togetic reach the house, they turned to face the oncoming threat.

The closer the group got, the more visible they became, revealing that they were Lombre, and that each wore a red band around his forehead. ”Well, lookie what we got here boys,” said the first one, identifying himself as the leader. The other two thugs gave a couple of grunts that were clearly meant to be laughter, and the head Lombre came closer to Era and Ethfael. ”A pretty little lady and her defender; how sweet.” The Lombre's expression changed to a leer as he leaned over them, ”Why aren't you two lovebirds in the square with everyone else, huh? Orders were everyone.”
Era and Ethfael exchanged a glance, clearly the Lombre thought that they were some of the children who lived here. Clearly they weren't the brightest if that was the case; any normal person would know at an instant that a Pichu and a Dratini didn't belong in these mines. Era took the offered gambit and ran with it, hoping Ethfael would catch on, and that it would glean them some information. ”We-We're sorry Mister,” she said in a high pitched voice, ”It's just that we didn't know what to do! We didn't hear the news!”
The Lombre looked at her suspiciously, ”What do you mean you didn't hear the news Missy? We went to every house and told everyone that they was s'posed to go to the square pronto, or we'd start killin' the kiddies, just like yourself.” He took a threatening step forward and his comrades gave their grunting laughs again. ”Maybe we should start with you two, huh?”
Ethfael took a step forward trying to mimic the childish speech that Era had used, ”We weren't at home!” he protested, pulling off a pout marvelously, ”I wanted to show her this neat place I'd found! There were lots of sparkly things there and I thought she'd like it!”
The Lombre paused, looking at him, ”Sparkly things, eh kid?” he said, a sly look coming into his eye. ”Say, maybe if you show us where it is, we won't kill you after all. The Boss has already started his message anyhow, we were just sent to make certain nobody was laggin' behind. We'll just miss the first few battles is all.”
Era took a step forward, putting the innocent curiousity of a child on her face. ”What battles Mister?”
The Lombre chuckled and the sound sent shivers down Era’s spine, ”Oh, nothing you need to worry your little head about sweetheart,” he replied, ”You’ll get your chance to join the others soon. We’re havin’ you all duke it out, mano a mano, and if you’re strong enough, you get to survive.” In a stage whisper to his henchman, the Lombre added, ”Honestly, that mite doesn’t have a chance, I might bet a bit of money on the Dratini kid though; he looks like he’s made of tougher stuff.”
Ethfael had played his part for long enough, and his anger was building, once the last words were out of the Lombre’s mouth he bashed into the other Pokemon with a Slam. Having children fight each other was just wrong, and he needed no more prompting once the fool insulted Era. Sure they could have played the façade a bit longer, but what was the point, they had all the information they needed. ”Enough games,” Ethfael said, speaking in normal tones instead of falsetto now, and firing a Dragon Rage at the Lombre who ducked, only to have it hit the face of his companion. The unfortunate victim of Ethfael’s wrath shrieked with pain as he was blinded momentarily by the flames and began running about frantically trying to put out the fire.
Era had about had it with the jerks too, and when Ethfael attacked, she took the closest underling. Electricity rising to her cheeks she fired a Thundershock at it which caused it to squeal almost femininely. She aimed a Swift Attack at its leaf which sliced off the edges, causing it to become furious. It lashed out at her unexpectedly making a gruesome face and punched her with a Fake Out causing her to flinch from surprise and pain, long enough for it to follow up with Fury Swipes, clawing at her viciously. Once Era recovered from her initial shock, she jumped back in with a Quick Attack, causing it to lose its balance ever so slightly. With a smirk, she smacked him upside the face several times with a Doubleslap. The Lombre moaned and reached out a hand to touch her, beginning to Absorb her energy. Era winced as she felt her energy sapping slightly and sent a Thundershock through the Lombre once more, the close quarters and the water on him conducting the electricity giving it and extra spark which caused him to fall to the ground, not to rise again.
Ethfael looked to the running Lombre with scorn rather than sympathy. Leaving the initial Lombre he’d attacked, he used Extremespeed to collide with the Lombre and knock it to its knees. It blindly thrashed about, and then paused for a moment. Ethfael summoned his magic, preparing to end the Lombre’s misery when it hit him squarely in the head with a Zen Headbutt. Ethfael winced, slightly dazed by the attack, only to be hit by the other Lombre with a violent Astonish attack which startled Ethfael even more. Era dashed over to help, on the first Lombre with Quick Attack in a moment, leaving Ethfael with the still burning Lombre. Not showing any mercy any longer, Ethfael aimed an Icy Wind at the Lombre which chilled it to the core and caused its fighting to cease as it froze over thanks to the water all over it.
Era and the Lombre leader were locked in fierce combat back and forth. She aimed a Swift Attack at him which he responded to with a set of Fury Swipes. Grimacing, she took a step back, hitting him with Thundershock. The Lombre laughed through his pain showing that he, in fact, wasn’t entirely sane. ”You messed with the wrong Lombre, girl.” he said, lifting his hands and then slamming them into the ground. The earth moaned in protest and began to quiver as the Lombre called on Nature’s Power, and Era winced as chunks of earth smashed into her over and over. Ethfael noticed her trouble and aimed a Dragon Rage at the Lombre causing the deranged Pokemon to turn on him with a Hydro Pump that Ethfael took the brunt of, being forced back a few feet from the force of the water. Era meanwhile gathered her electricity as soon as the attacks weren’t trained on her, bringing it around her to form a ball of electrical energy. She pounded into the Lombre with a Volt Tackle, the display like a deadly show of fireworks.
The Lombre fell to his knees at the force, breathing cutting short and his fight clearly lost after the hits he’d taken. He began to cough and his breathing rasped slightly, his eyes beginning to glaze with the pain. As Era and Ethfael came closer to ensure that he wouldn’t try to pull anything else the Lombre looked at them appearing to be impressed. ”You aren’t kids, are you?” he said as a last remark, laughing with the last of his breath before he fell unconscious like the others.
Era shivered slightly, it wasn’t pretty what had to be done to the terrible Pokemon of the world, but then again, what they did was inexcusable. When the Lombre woke up, hopefully they would think twice before doing anything like that again. It would take them a while to recover from the trauma and wounds from this battle, longer than they’d probably ever experienced before. ”They’re horrible,” she whispered, ”We’re in for more than we expected I think. If these were any sign of how the Nuzleaf will be.”
Ethfael nodded, ”We need to be on our guard,” he said, ”But we also have to stop this.” Opening the bag slung around his neck, Ethfael pulled out an Oran Berry for himself and Era. ”Here,” he said and she took it gratefully, both of them allowing the healing juices of the Oran Berries to heighten their strength once more and soothe their wounds.
Riley bounded out of the house trailed by the sniffling Togetic, ”You two are really amazing, you know that?” he said to them, ”Your battle was awesome.” The Eevee’s eyes shone with admiration as he spoke, then he added to Era, ”I especially liked how you pretended to be kids, it was so cool! What made you think of it?”
Era blushed a bit at the praise, ”It just came to me really,” she said, ”But it did give us the information we needed.” Growing solemn, she went on, ”We need to get to the center of town as soon as possible. This gang is worse than we thought, they’re having the children fight each other, and the whole town watch.”
Riley looked alarmed and the Togetic let out a moan of despair. ”No! Why? Why must they do this? I should have been able to stop it…”
”There was nothing you could have done,” Ethfael said soothingly, ”And if we get there soon enough, hopefully we can stop any real damage from being done.” He didn’t say the thought that everyone was thinking: clearly the Nuzleaf planned to have the children fight to the death for their own amusement, and that had to be avoided at all costs.
The Togetic attempted to pull herself together, stemming her tears a bit, ”Yes, you’re right, you’re right…” she muttered, ”I’ll take you there.” The Togetic led on, their pace very urgent now as they went on. They walked so briskly it bordered on a run, all of them grimly silent, knowing what awaited them. The closer they got to the center, the clearer it was that there was trouble. Muffled shouts and cries were able to be picked out, and the noise got louder and louder until at last they reached its source.
The very area was appalling. Jigglypuff, Happiny, Clefairy, and Skitty were all around the edges of the square, about 15 in all, which had been turned into an arena type area blocked on all four sides by Nuzleaf. The kids had expressions of horror on their faces as they were forced to look on as two Skitty fought in the center ring. The four Nuzleaf on the edges of the ring would Torment the children if they came too close, or if they didn’t attack for long enough they would hit them with Razor Winds to force them to fight. Both of the pair were already quite beaten and scraped, but one was clearly hurting more than the other. Looking closer, the group made out another figure: the Kirlia who the Togetic had called Lydia. A fifth Nuzleaf sat on an almost throne of sorts, watching the ongoing events with a sadistic grin on his face.
Era, Ethfael, Riley, and the Togetic looked on, all mortified. The Skitty both were mewling pitifully, but the Nuzleaf hit them both with Razor Winds and they circled Lydia, both trembling; this had apparently been going on for a while now judging from Lydia’s bruised appearance. The Kirlia was talking to them, trying to soothe them, but a Nuzleaf commanded her to pipe down and the Skitty began using Tackle on their beloved mother figure. Paralyzed with disgust the group didn’t move for several moments, and the first to jump in was Riley. Fur bristling in fury, the Eevee bolted through the children and up to the Nuzleaf, where he hit the first one he came to with a Quick Attack. After that mass panic ensued.
Era and Ethfael jolted out of their horror as they watched the Nuzleaf begin to converge upon Riley. Ethfael used Extremespeed to hurtle through the crowd of children and hit the Nuzleaf which was grabbing at Riley in the chest, and following through with an Icy Wind to finish the job. Era bolted after Ethfael, jumping in right beside Riley and aiming a Swift Attack at two more Nuzleaf in front of them. The children began openly crying and milling about and the Togetic began to rush around to them trying to soothe them, while Lydia and the two Skitty watched, unable to move from shock as they watched the battle commence around them.
The trio of Nuzleaf remaining were all ready to put up a fight. They fired Razor Leaf simultaneously, the slicing leaves stinging as they cut into the trio’s skin. Ethfael attacked with a Slam, the force causing a domino effect as the grunts fell, one on top of the next. Era aimed a beam of Swift Attack at them as they tried to get up, forcing them all to the ground again. The Nuzleaf facing Ethfael gave him a Pound to the face, causing him to stagger back enough for the Nuzleaf to get up. Riley hit the Nuzleaf with a Tackle, and Era pelted him with Swift Attack again, causing that Nuzleaf to keel over, unconscious as the first.
The other two Nuzleaf had regained their footing and were concentrating as if they were preparing an attack. Era and Riley hit one with a double Quick Attack, their teamwork flawless, as if it had been planned. Ethfael shot an Icy Wind at the other Nuzleaf, freezing it over as Era and Riley took down the other with a Thundershock and a Take Down.
The fifth Nuzleaf looked at them in distain. He wore a red bandanna around his head like all the others, and a black cloak fell behind him. Clearly he felt like a king in his own right; presiding over a corrupted court. ”Look who’s come to save the day,” the Nuzleaf said, ”A Pichu, a Dratini, and an Eevee, what a pointless endeavor.” Pulling a blade out from under his cloak he announced to the square, ”These will be the first to go!”
The Nuzleaf jumped down and thrust the knife towards Era, just missing her. She sent a Thundershock at him and he twitched but didn’t react otherwise. Ethfael hit him with Dragon Rage, and Riley bit down on his arm to try and force him to release the knife. The Nuzleaf shook his arm to get Riley off, and hit him with Faint Attack, the punch causing Riley to wince, but then he retorted with a Quick Attack, darting in and back as fast as he could. Era backed away from the knife pointed at her as Ethfael jumped in with an Extremespeed averting the Nuzleaf’s aim. With a vile curse, the Nuzleaf sliced across Ethfael’s cheek with his knife before occupying the others with a Razor Leaf. Blood dripping from his wound, Ethfael blasted the Nuzleaf with an Icy Wind, making the Pokemon wince as ice began to layer itself on his skin. As the Nuzleaf got ready to attack, Era and Riley exchanged a look and he gave her a Helping Hand to reach the Nuzleaf with her Quick Attack in time to keep him from hitting Ethfael.
The Nuzleaf glared at her spitefully, and without a second thought snatched her up off the ground and held the knife to her throat. ”Nobody move if you want the Pichu to live,” he snarled, pressing the knife against Era’s throat hard enough to draw blood. The reaction was immediate, both Ethfael and Riley halting in their tracks, and even the children fell silent, watching with still evident terror. The Nuzleaf chuckled menacingly and looked down at Era, ”So, you’re the head of the group? A Pichu?” he scoffed and laughed, ”To think that you thought you could defeat me; no one can defeat me!” He spun her around to face him, tilting her head up with the blade of the knife, ”So…The only question is what to do with you. You should be fine payment for your companions’ mistakes.”
Era glared back at him bitterly and raised her chin defiantly although she was being held off the ground like a small child. ”You can’t do anything to me,” she retorted, her voice a whisper thanks to the blade at her throat, ”I bring justice, and justice will be your doom.” Era brought the electricity coursing through her to a concentration in her fist which was unwisely left free, and made the Thunderpunch collide with the Nuzleaf’s blade. The knife crackled viciously with electricity and was knocked from its owner’s hand straight into his torso. With a howl of pain the Nuzleaf released Era who watched him coldly as he slumped to the ground. His breathing grew harsh, and then stopped altogether, his eyes glazing over, as Era’s welled up with formerly concealed tears. She wasn’t coldhearted, and she hated killing, but some criminals could never be reformed, and this Nuzleaf was one such criminal.
Ethfael came up to her first, patting her on the head with his tail gently. ”You did what you had to do,” he murmured. They had both killed before, being in the Guild made that almost mandatory, but Era had never really watched a death at her own hands like the one she had just caused; gruesome and filled with pain, and horrible. Closing her eyes she leaned against Ethfael, tears streaming down her face, unable to speak. He simply stood there, providing silent understanding to what she was feeling. Both of them were so preoccupied that they didn’t happen to notice the gasp that came from the Nuzleaf as he pulled the knife from his ribs and pulled back, aimed directly at their hearts until it was too late. Era and Ethfael both watched the knife as the Nuzleaf prepared to throw it, certain that it would mean their death, and knowing that they were powerless to stop it now.
Luckily for them, a certain Eevee did see it in time, and drew the figure of a card in the air which materialized a moment later. The instant before the Nuzleaf managed to release his lethal attack Riley threw the card which hit the Nuzleaf and embedded itself in his flesh right over his heart, ending its life. The Trump Card was almost hidden in the blood, but an Ace of Diamonds was visible for all to see. Riley shivered at the sight and collapsed to the ground in shock, appalled by what he had just done.
Both Era and Ethfael looked at their client in amazement, and Era walked over to him mutely and simply placed a paw on his back. ”You saved our lives,” she whispered to him, ”Thank you.” Those simple words meant more than anything else could in this situation, creating a bond that could never be broken; a bond of battle, blood, and solidarity; a bond of loyalty and faith; a bond of fate.
Riley looked at Era with a weak smile, ”What else would I do?” he said, ”You guys are my friends, and that’s what friends are for.” Unable to restrain herself any longer, Era hugged Riley tightly, tears falling again. He joined in the tears after a moment, and both of them mourned the loss of life that had taken place, and the necessity for it to happen. Riley’s Ace of Diamonds shimmered and then faded into nothingness, leaving only a body as a sign of what had happened.
”Help!” a shaky young voice cried out, and the trio turned around to find the children gathered around Lydia, the Kirlia shuddering and bleeding as she lay on the ground, life flickering. ”Please, somebody save her!” The voice came from one of the two Skitty who were forced to fight. His lip trembled and tears began to spill as he looked at them. ”You have to…” he said, ”She’s our mama! She can’t die!”
Era swallowed nervously, making her way over to the Kirlia. The children parted to allow her to go through, all their young faces looking up at her in hope and desperation; if she couldn’t save Lydia, these children would be even worse off than they were before, but Era wasn’t the best healer, she just had to rely on faith which is what she did. Lydia raised her head in such a manner that it was painful to watch, and looked at Era gratefully; ”You saved them,” she murmured, almost dreamily, ”The children will be alright…”
”Yes,” Era replied softly, taking the Kirlia’s hand in her own, ”The children will be fine, I promise.” The Kirlia looked at her, eyes brimming with unspoken gratitude and Era felt a lump form in her throat which made it difficult to swallow, ”Hold on for them,” she whispered to the bleeding Kirlia, ”These children need you.”
Lydia sighed, her energy exhausted, ”I’m not strong enough,” she said, her voice so soft that only Era could hear her.
Era shook her head furiously, ”No! You are!” she protested, ”You know that you are…They know that you are. You’ll get better, I know you will.” Lydia sighed and shut her eyes going limp as she fell out of consciousness. Bowing her head Era held on to her hand. Please… she thought fervently, If anyone’s listening, if there’s any possible way, don’t let her die. These children have nothing; don’t rob them of her too.” As she made her Wish a silent tear trickled down her cheek falling down to touch Lydia’s hand where she held it, and something glimmered very faintly, before vanishing entirely.
Era felt a light touch on the shoulder and saw the Togetic there, the contact seemed to give her strength, and another, slightly more visible glimmer appeared, lingering a bit longer before vanishing. One by one, the children came over, pressing against Era; reaching a paw or hand out to touch her, until they were all gathered together, eyes on her, and her eyes were closed, concentrating. The combined Wish grew more and more powerful, until a visible glimmer began to dance around Lydia, sparks of white leaping around across her skin and sealing her wounds. The children gasped, and Era opened her eyes to see the white sparks spiraling around Lydia like a beautiful sort of constellation, making her appear pure white. There was one last brilliant glow, and then the sparks receded into Lydia, their healing job done. The result was an entirely healed, angelic looking Lydia who now was colored was white and silver, her normal green gone, and her eyes glimmered with gold. Elegantly, she stood, eyes on Era and a gentle smile on her face; ”Thank you,” she said, voice chiming slightly, and Era went weak with relief, Riley bolting over to catch her as she slumped to the ground from fatigue.
The children surged over to Lydia who greeted them each individually, soothing them as they sobbed, overwhelmed by everything that had just happened, and as they left, Ethfael hurried over to where Riley was supporting Era, Oran Berry ready to be given. ”Eat up Era,” he said, ”I think you’ve earned a bit of selfishness.” The cut on his face from the knife was still bleeding and Riley set Era down gently to eat the Berry so that he could help Ethfael bandage it. Pulling the bandage out of Ethfael’s bag, Riley tied it securely around Ethfael’s head, to which the Dratini didn’t protest. Riley was clearly the one most capable of action right now; no one could deny that. ”Thank you,” Ethfael said as Riley finished, which the Eevee simply shrugged off, insisting it had been nothing.
The three of them watched the Togetic reach Lydia and begin sobbing into her friend’s shoulder; it was a touching sight, especially with all of the children surrounding them adoringly. Era, Oran Berry finished, and a bit of spirit restored to her managed a smile. Being the head of a Wish of the power and intensity of the one she’d just led had taken its toll, but the Oran Berry was enough to give her the strength to move again, and remind her of the other things they still had left to accomplish. Still for now it was rather nice to simply watch the happy children and their keepers, and know that they really had managed to restore some semblance of peace to this place. ”They’ll be alright,” Era said, ”I’m sure of it.”
With the battle over, it was clearly time to continue on with their original mission, and all of them knew it. As the fuss began to die down slightly, the trio made their way to the Togetic and Kirlia, ”I’m afraid it’s time for us to continue on our way,” he said, and both Era and Riley nodded. ”We’re glad that everything was able to turn out for the better here, and wish you both the best of luck in the future.”
The Kirlia nodded, her newly silver locks bouncing as she did so, ”And we wish you the best explorers. You have saved not only myself, but all the children and Ielena as well. So long as we live we will be eternally grateful.”
Era smiled, shaking her head, ”We never would have done anything less,” she said. ”Goodbye. May Arceus watch over you; all of you.”
The Togetic, who had at last been introduced as Ielena smiled, ”And you as well,” she replied, tears in her eyes again. ”Take care, and thank you…Thank you for everything.”
The three turned to leave but Lydia beckoned Ethfael over to her and whispered something in his ear, ”I was going to tell you this before,” she said softly, ”And it seems almost out of place now, but I thought you'd appreciate it.” She whispered something to Ethfael and the faintest tinge of a blush came over his cheeks before he went back to join the others.
”What was that about?” Era asked him.
”Nothing,” Ethfael said quietly, his blush even more evident now, ”Nothing at all.”Lydia and Ielena both waved goodbye and the children joined in, all of them bidding the trio farewell as they headed back through the village and out into the mines once more.
The trio walked in silence for a while as they traversed the mines which now seemed emptier than ever. They were consumed in their thoughts and as a whole the atmosphere was altogether gloomy. After this had gone on for a while, Riley took it upon himself to lighten the mood once more. He paused and waited until Era and Ethfael turned around to see why he’d stopped, and without warning, turned back to pull at his tail. Era and Ethfael exchanged a glance, wondering what exactly this was about, only to look back to find a colorful red scarf in his mouth. Grinning at their looks of surprise, Riley continued pulling at it; the scarf being knotted to another scarf, which was knotted to another, and so on. Soon the line of scarves had formed a large pile at his feet in a multicolored spectrum of fabric. Reds; oranges; yellows; greens; blues; purples; and all the colors in between made up the rainbow of scarves and even Ethfael couldn’t hide how much he was impressed: the scarves were coming from seemingly nowhere. When at last Riley turned back, the end of the scarf rope in his jaws, Era applauded with pleasure, and Ethfael nodded his agreement, unable to clap.
Riley let the scarf drop and bowed gracefully for his audience. ”Thank you, thank you!” he said, the same grin from before flitting across his face as he imitated an announcer’s tones, ”But wait, there’s more!” Picking the end of the scarf up in his teeth again, he began to spin around rapidly, the scarf lifting entirely off the ground and forming a ribbon-like pattern, trailing after the spinning Eevee. The other two watched as he spun, and when Riley stopped again, only one scarf with the cascade of colors from all of the other scarves on it.
Era applauded again, thoroughly pleased with the trick. ”How did you do that Riley?” she asked, touching her paw against the soft fabric of the scarf Riley held.
”A good magician never reveals his tricks,” he responded cryptically and then laughed, flourishing the scarf in the air before rolling it up into a ball and taking it in his paw. ”What can I say? No one can stand to be constantly depressed; it’s not good for you.” He cupped the scarf in his paw, and then reopened the paw to show that it was gone. ”A little magic is good for lightening up the mood, if I do say so myself.”
Smiling still, Era nodded, ”I guess you’re right,” she replied, a slight bit of optimism in her tone, ”Thanks Riley.”
The carefree Eevee laughed again, ”Anytime.”
They continued on in a more peaceful silence than before, more at ease with the situation now, having been blissfully distracted. However peace, as it is hard to get, is even harder to maintain, and so it was of no surprise to any of them when they came across something to further deter their path. As they went further ahead, they encountered a fork in the path; both of them dark and unlit by torches until further on. Looking from right to left, there was almost no way to distinguish them except for their respective directions. ”Which way do we go?” Era asked, and Riley shrugged, both of them looking to Ethfael for guidance.
The Dratini looked back and forth at the two tunnels, seeming to be keenly searching for something that wasn’t to be found. After a full minute of this endeavor he sighed, ”I don’t know,” he said. ”They’re both exactly the same.” The three looked back and forth helplessly before Ethfael stepped up and drew a slash mark across the dividing wall. ”There, now we can choose a way and come back if necessary.” He doubted there would be much need for it, but it was far better to be safe than sorry.

After a brief period of debate on which direction to take, they decided to follow the left path for no other reason than it was directly in front of them; having nothing to base a decision off of made choices much harder. They walked through the darker path with no small amount of tension, their minds playing tricks on them as they looked into the dim shadows. They stuck close together to ensure that no one was left behind to be alone in the dark shadows, it was far too dangerous here for that.
Soon the sound of dripping water became evident, and they all exchanged puzzled glances as they traveled toward the light ahead. As they stepped into the lighted room they were surprised to find a rather large pool of water occupying most of the space and the area made of stone instead of carved into the earth like the rest of the mine. The dripping sound came from stalactites at the top of the cave roof, and several stalagmites riddled the bottom of the floor as well. ”I’m guessing we took a wrong turn,” Riley said, his fur fluffed out from the chill in the air, ”This looks nothing like the rest of the mine.”
”It’s rather curious actually,” Ethfael murmured, his eyes on the pool, ”That something like this existed underground, only to be found by the miners. It’s almost as if it could have been made, not formed naturally.” Era nodded, having been thinking along those lines as well, this place clearly wasn’t what it seemed.
”Leave,” a voice suddenly hissed, causing all three to jump in surprise, ”You are trespassers here…Leave!” A spout of Whirlpool attacks came at them from seemingly nowhere, and Era tackled Riley to the ground so they just avoided hitting him. Ethfael dodged them, aided by his timely Agility, searching around for the culprit. ”You have been warned…” the voice said, suddenly joined by others to create a chorus of voices, ”Leave now!”
”Come out!” Ethfael challenged, standing protectively in front of Era who had sprung back to her feet from her awkward position on top of Riley. ”We’re not afraid of your threats!”
”Oh?” the voice replied eerily, ”You will regret that, Dratini. You and your friends will pay for insulting us!” In an instant, the three found themselves surrounded by a sextet of Shellder, all ready to fight. ”You will all pay!” the six chanted, and six Ice Shard attacks followed, sharpened stones of hard ice flying to every side of them. Ethfael ducked to the ground, narrowly escaping worse damage from the ice as it flew by and merely getting hit on the side of his head. Of course, that was bad enough as it was, sending unrelenting shivers through his body where he lay on the ground. Era and Riley both also had the sense to duck, the slivers of ice that managed to hit them not having nearly the effect they’d had on Ethfael, and both went on the offensive immediately after.
Her fur bristling with electricity, Era aimed a Thundershock at the closest Shellder, which was forced to Withdraw into its shell to avoid being incinerated. She followed up with a Swift Attack, the star-like hitting three of the Shellder nearby. Riley threw himself in a Tackle at the nearest Shellder, his foe countering with a Clamp; holding tightly and not letting go. Angrily, he retorted with a Bite, pulling the Shellder off of himself and throwing it to the side. The same Shellder was hit with another Thundershock from Era, and jumped whimpering back into the water. They exchanged a nod of acknowledgement before each turning back to their specific adversaries. Forcing himself up from the ground, Ethfael lunged at a Shellder nearby with a Slam attack, hitting it in the side with a satisfying cracking sound.
The Shellder were in slight disarray from the unexpected strength of their attackers, but the strange voice rallied them up again. ”We’re not that easily beaten down, are we boys? Show them what we’ve got!” It was impossible to tell where the voice was coming from, for all the Sheller sounded the same, if it was in fact one of the Shellder who was speaking. The five remaining Shellder began to make strange, unintelligible sounds that caused Era and Riley to cover their ears. Ethfael did his best to tune out the Supersonic, unable to block it out entirely, but the noise left him disoriented and confused. The three Shellder that Era had hit with her Swift Attack circled her and Riley, pressing them back to back while still making the dreadful noise. The other two aimed a combined Aurora Beam at Ethfael, causing him to cry out in pain as it hit him since he was incapable of dodging.
Era and Riley both heard Ethfael’s shout, and Era bristled, fist lighting with sparks as she hit the Shellder nearest her with a Thunderpunch, knocking it straight back to the water where it belonged. Taking the gap in the circle, she ran on all fours to get to her wounded partner, leaving the remaining Shellder to Riley. The Eevee growled darkly to draw the enemy’s attention back to him, the sound rather menacing. It had the desired effect, causing the Shellder to turn back and look and while their guard was down, he took the opportunity to strike; a Tackle to the left and a Bite to the right soon caused both of the Shellder to Withdraw into their shells, frightened by this menace of an Eevee. Riley used a Quick Attack before the second Shellder managed to close its shell entirely, sending it flying into the water to join the other two that had been defeated. The Shellder in front of Riley was quaking in its shell, but opened its shell enough to shoot another Ice Shard at Riley. The ice pelted against him, but Riley merely jumped forward to Tackle it, and it whimpered with pain before jumping back into the water.
Meanwhile, Era was preoccupied by the two other Shellder who were harassing Ethfael, their Aurora Beam had created a sheen of ice over him, enough to freeze him solid. Angrily she hit the one nearest to herself with a Quick Attack, helped along by all of her built up speed, causing it to crash into the one beside it. While they were dazed she hit the other with a Doubleslap, until its shell had chips in it. She glared at the two who quivered before her and then jolted them with a Thundershock, not bothering with delicacy. They were down in an instant, keeled over in a dead faint. Riley bounded over to join her as the voice echoed again, ”We’re not finished yet!” it cried, ”So you’re strong, but there’s only so much a Pichu and an Eevee can do, and your companion can’t help you now.” There was a long cackle and more Shellder arose from the pond, and at their head was a Poliwhirl. ”I told you that you’d pay!” the Poliwhirl shouted, and a cheer came up from the Shellder.
”Yeesh,” Riley muttered to Era, ”These guys are seriously touchy. We only came here by accident.”
Era smiled slightly, ”Well, Poliwhirl can be like that,” she replied lightly. It was interesting to be having such a calm conversation as they were being charged by enemies, but then again they were only Shellder aside from the Poliwhirl. When the Shellder swarmed close enough, Era fired a Swift Attack, the first row of Shellder stumbling as the rays hit them which led to general disarray in the mob of Pokemon. Excluding the Poliwhirl there were a large number of Shellder, the sheer amount of them being rather surprising. If they had been anything more than Shellder, there may have been reason to worry. The Poliwhirl glared at them shouting something furiously, and the Shellder all turned and simultaneously fired Icicle Spear at Era and Riley.
The spears weren’t very large, but they were sharp, and their aim was dead on. The pair dropped to the ground, hoping that maybe the majority of attacks would miss them, when suddenly the winds picked up. A mighty Twister sprung up from the ground and headed towards the army of Shellder, their spears picked up in the winds and sent back at them. Several Shellder were picked up in the winds, and those that weren’t watched their comrades sent across the pond to fall into it with a splash in horror. Turning back to see the source of the attack, Era and Riley saw Ethfael, wounded and breathing hard, but with the gleam of battle lighting his eyes and unfrozen. ”So it’s you who’s been causing this trouble is it?” Ethfael said to the Poliwhirl, ”Then you’d best be prepared to meet the consequences.”
The Poliwhirl laughed with scorn, flocked by a still rather large amount of Shellder. ”No, it is you who will feel my wrath Dratini! Too long have I waited to punish those who came to destroy our lake!” Era, Ethfael, and Riley exchanged glances, clueless as to what the Poliwhirl referred, but there was no time to discuss it, for now a massive Whirlpool concocted by the Shellder was headed for them. They scattered to the sides of the room, a Bubble attack from the Poliwhirl tailing Era and hitting her as she ran. The Water Type’s attack didn’t hurt as much as irritate her, but it did induce a Thundershock to take down another pair of Shellder.
Riley yelped as he was caught in the projectile Whirlpool, holding his breath until the water dissipated. Angrily he raced up to the Shellder with a Quick Attack, followed by a harsh Bite which sent it back to the water. The Shellder nearby responded with a Tackle, hitting Riley to the ground. He picked himself up only to have his tail caught in a Clamp. The Eevee fought to shake it off, but to no avail, the Shellder clinging to him as if its life depended on it. Wincing as its Clamp grew even more painful, he did the one thing left to do and backed up very quickly, slamming the Shellder clinging to him into the rock nearby. He repeated the process until it let go, falling to the ground unconscious.
Ethfael was faced with a huge group of Shellder, an Icicle Spear from each of them aimed straight at him. His Agility allowed him to dodge two of them, the Shellder gaping with surprise as they were sent flying by friendly fire. Three other spears however, grazed the Dratini as they flew past, and another uncontrollable set of shivers overtook him. In spite of the shivering however, Ethfael was not about to give up the fight. He bashed his tail over one of the Shellder in a Slam, then used Extremespeed to reach another and hit it before the third managed to subdue him with an Ice Shard attack. Panting, he rose to hit the Shellder again only to have a Bubblebeam hit him straight in the face from the Poliwhirl. Riley jumped over, finishing the Shellder that menaced Ethfael with a bite, and he nodded a thank you before they turned back to face the Poliwhirl.
Era was in close combat with the Poliwhirl, a Thunderpunch hitting him straight in the stomach. He retorted with a Mud Slap, causing her to be covered in mud and pausing to shake it off. Riley jumped forward, his fur bristling, and pulled yet another Trump Card out of nowhere. He threw it at the Poliwhirl causing the other Pokemon to stagger slightly as it cut through him pretty badly; its Ace of Hearts visible before it shimmered and vanished.
The Poliwhirl got back to his feet and then locked eyes with Riley causing the Eevee to freeze in place. ”Aren't you feeling sleepy?” the Poliwhirl said, his voice echoing and layered with hypnotic suggestion. Riley looked confused, but at the same time his eyes became trailed on the swirl on the Poliwhirl's stomach, to him it almost looked like it was turning. ”That's right,” the Poliwhirl crooned softly, ”You're so tired, you've been awake for so long, and it would be so much better to sleep.” Ethfael watched helplessly as Riley began to yawn, succumbing to the Hypnosis. A sleepy look glazed over his eyes as he curled up on the ground in a ball, tail over his nose, and promptly fell asleep. ”How about you Dratini?” The Poliwhirl said, eyes locked n Ethfael's now, ”Aren't you feeling tired as well?” Ethfael tried his hardest to stare the Poliwhirl down, but he felt his eyelids become heavy even as he tried to force the feeling away.
Just as Ethfael's will was about to be broken down, the Poliwhirl being an excellent hypnotist, the concentration of the Poliwhirl was broken first, thanks to a timely Thundershock on Era's part. The sudden burst of electricity overwhelmed him and his attention on Ethfael was averted, breaking the spell. The Dratini regained his senses, blinking furiously to clear his head and fired a Dragon Rage at the Poliwhirl, hitting it directly in the center of the spiral; a perfect bulls-eye. The Poliwhirl teetered precariously on the edge of the pool, struggling to keep its balance, finally dropping himself on Era with a Body Slam. Soon enough he was up again, forced to his feet by a very angry Pichu and her Thundershock attack. The Poliwhirl glared at them, ”You will pay for this!” he cried, ”Mark my words trespassers! I will-!” The Poliwhirl had his speech cut short by a Quick Attack from Era, causing him to topple over and into the water with a splash.
”Are you all right?” Era asked Ethfael, hurrying over to meet him after the Poliwhirl did not return to the surface.
”Perfectly fine,” Ethfael said, ”This cloak certainly does its job properly.” The Mirage Cloak about his shoulders had certainly helped him out in this battle. With so many Ice Type attacks having hit him, the damage could have been far worse without the cloak's aid.
”I'm so glad,” Era said, expression brightening considerably. ”I was afraid that...” She trailed off, a blush coloring her cheeks, and a few more sparks flew off her cheeks again. ”Um...I'll go wake up Riley,” she said, perhaps a bit too quickly and bounded off.
Ethfael looked away unable to meet her eyes and thinking about what Lydia had said to him before they had left, his face covered in a blush. ”You like your co-captain a bit more than you let on, don't you? If it means anything, I'm sure she likes you that way as well, although from the looks of it your friend herself doesn't even know it yet. Sometimes Electric Types are different from the rest of us, in that they can feel a sort of magnetic or electrical attraction to the ones that they love. It can sometimes cause them to give off sparks near the one they like and I couldn't help but notice the effect that you seem to have on her...” The thought made him nervous; he'd never had feelings like that for anyone until he'd met her, and then things had gradually started to change, but he didn't know what to say, what to do about it, and for once words were failing him, leaving him tongue-tied and as baffled as before.
Era meanwhile leaned down and shook Riley gently to wake him. The Eevee's eyes blinked open blearily and he uncurled himself, rubbing his eyes to clear the sleep from them. ”What just happened?” he asked her, standing up and shaking his fur out, ”One second we were fighting that Poliwhirl and I blanked out, only to wake up on the ground?”
”He used Hypnosis on you,” Era said, feeling a bit sheepish, ”Ethfael and I took care of him while you were asleep.” She smiled apologetically and helped him to his paws.
”Aw, that's awful luck,” Riley said, disappointed, ”Oh well, I guess I'll just have to redeem myself next time.” Looking Era over, he brightened up a bit and ducked his head, bringing it up again with Era's carnation in his mouth. She put her paw to her ear in surprise, realizing that it wasn't there. ”Looks like you dropped something,” he said with a grin, replacing it in its spot tucked behind her ear.
Together, they went back to Ethfael who was too caught up in his thoughts to notice Riley flirting with Era. When they came back he absently made sure that everyone and everything was there, and then looked around the underground lake on final time. ”It doesn't look like there's a way further in leading out from here, unless we'd like to swim across the lake,” he commented, ”So perhaps it would be best to go back and take the other path of the fork.” Seeing as that was their only reasonable course of action, they turned back and left the lake to its inhabitants, having troubled them enough already even though it was for justifiable reasons, and returned to the fork in the path from before.
They found the fork marked, just as Ethfael had left it, and so took the right path this time, going into the darkness. Once again a slight feeling of foreboding came over Era as she walked through the darkness, although she didn't know why it was that she felt that way. Darkness wasn't something that normally frightened her, so it was very strange how nervous she felt as they walked through the passage which was black as night. The further they walked, the less visible light there was until at last it was so dark that she couldn't see her paw in front of her face, let alone Ethfael or Riley. ”Ethfael?” she said nervously, ”Riley? Are you there?”
”I'm right behind you,” Ethfael said, reaching out his tail to tap the area where he thought Era was. He was just as blind as she in the dark, but his tail connected with something solid, and he heard a sigh of relief as something gently touched it. ”It's alright Era,” he said softly, ”I'm right here.”
”I'm here too!” came Riley's cheerful voice from Era's left. ”Hold on a second.” A deep breath was heard from where Riley was, and then something bright appeared, revealing the Eevee's face which was in deep concentration. The bright thing split into three, and then he began tossing them about through the air with his nose in a manner quite like juggling. He tossed them all into the air at once and they formed together to make the original brightly shining ball, which he tossed over to Era who caught it, realizing with surprise that it was her own Light Ball, which normally hung from a chain around her neck.
”How do you do that?” she asked with astonishment, holding her Light Ball and letting it reveal a bit of their path. ”It's really amazing.”
”Like I said,” Riley replied, ”It's a talent of mine.”
The area around them was long and narrow and the stones were ragged and jutted out at various points all over the walls. The tunnels looked like hey were ancient, and hadn't been used in a very long time. The Light Ball only illuminated the area directly around them for a few feet at best, so they couldn't see much more than that, but it was clear that they'd be traveling for a while without any light to guide them.
”So Riley,” Era said as they continued walking, closely packed together and more carefully than before. ”You said that your family knew of this secret place with the Evolutionary Stones in your message, right? How did you manage to find it?” It was a question that she'd been mulling around in her mind for quite some time now, since the beginning of their travels actually, and still hadn't figured out the answer to.”
”That's a long story,” Riley said, ”But I guess we have time for for long stories, don't we?” He laughed a bit and then continued, ”A long long time ago, when these mines were still in regular use, one of my relatives was around here. He was just a young Eevee at the time, a bit more curious than was good for him. He didn't work in the mines, but one day he came here anyway, wanting to see what it was that brought so many people to this place. Anyways, he managed to sneak inside past the Pokemon in charge and past the normal miners as well until he got to the older parts of the tunnels that were already mostly abandoned. He was in there for the longest time, several days at least, and when he came back he told his family the strangest stories.”
”He talked about a strange chamber in the very heart of the mines where there was braille covering the walls and a strangely lifelike statute made of pure steel, and then, when he went past the statue and to the other side of the wall, he pressed a certain marking on the wall where there was a metal plate covered in the same braille, and inside was a cavern filled with Evolutionary Stones of every type, even those that Eevee can't evolve with.” Riley laughed again, a smile on his face, ”I know, sounds pretty unbelievable right? Everyone would have probably have disregarded it, except for the fact that he went in an Eevee, and came out a Jolteon. And if that wasn't enough proof, he also brought back a Water Stone for his sister, and anyone who knew anything about these mines knew that Thunder Stones and Water Stones weren't found anywhere near each other. The veins were on opposite sides of the mine, so while it might have been possible that he could find one by accident, both was too much of a coincidence. When he had a child, he brought her with him to the depths of the mine and showed it to her, and she chose her evolution there. It's gone on ever since then and finally it came down to me, but when my parents brought me here I couldn't decide. They tried to force something on me, but I ended up running away before they could force my evolution...So now they've made me come back, and told me that I was to come back evolved or they would disown me.” Riley's carefree expression dropped from his face and his ears drooped with sadness, ”I don't really know what to do...”
”That's awfully harsh...” Era said sympathetically, ”No one deserves to be abandoned by their own family. After all, look at me,” she said, ”I've been able to evolve for quite some time now, but it's just never seemed like the right time. You too, right Ethfael?”
Ethfael nodded offhandedly, ”Yes, evolution is something that should not be rushed, waiting for the right time is essential or else it can throw off your entire being.” It was a lesson that he'd been taught since he was a child by his older siblings. To everything a time, and a time to everything, that was the way of the world or so he had always been told. ”If you're not ready for evolution, then don't force it upon yourself. You'll know when the time comes.”
Riley looked down pensively, a thoughtful glimmer in his eyes although he said nothing, and his ears seemed to perk up again, if only slightly. He was more troubled than one would think, especially considering his cheerful attitude. It was interesting how some people were like that to Era. Many people with lives like that turned against themselves and the world, growing dark and twisted which is what created monsters like the Nuzleaf they had faced. It was rare to find people like Riley who lived in the darkness but radiated light, and yet they were the strongest, resisting their misfortunes and remaining optimistic. It was an admirable quality in a Pokemon, one that Era admired at least.
