Bigger and better

( takes place shortly after growth)

"Look how many books I can fit on here and lift," Gus crowed as he wiggled his tail in an attempt to get Rex's attention. The part dragon, part mermaid boy had recently grown larger and was showing off his bigger stronger form. Several library books had been stacked on his tail or moreover on the large black fin at the end of it, the flexible ends of the fin curved up a bit to prevent the novels from sliding off.

Rex turned away from the row of books he'd been examining to stare at his son. "That's impressive," he admitted, " but you might wanna stop in case a librarian thinks your playing and gets mad." Sure Gus would never hurt a book on purpose but these people didn't know that and there was a chance the overexcited boy could let the books fall and if they got damaged there'd be hell to pay. Rex needed Gus to be in the good books of the librarians becuase he intended to use this place as tool.

Gus was going to learn at least a little not to be so attached to things or at the very least that he couldn't keep everything he found that he liked. Rex was sure the boy would get attached to at least one of the books they'd be checking out but there was no way Gus could keep it. Rex wasn't doing this to be cruel though just to make a point, library books could be borrowed but would have to be returned eventually because they were for everyone to enjoy. The detective hoped that if he could convince Gus that these things at least could not be posses no matter how much he liked them then at other more serious times he might have a foothold in the argument then. If Rex could make a case for special circumstances it'd be well worth the fight he knew would be coming.

The man felt a little bad as his son pouted and
brought the books up so he could carry them in his arms . " Okay" Gus mumbled, the joy of the moment clearly gone.

"Hey, none of that," Rex chided softly, gods but he hated feeling guilty. " You can show me some stuff later at home or" he paused for a moment " you can practice later today and tomorrow you an do a whole show in front of the guys before our card game?" The offer wasn't exactly spectacular but Rex knew Gus liked the other officers who came by for blackjack and poker nights and showing off for them might be appealing.

Gus seemed to consider this for a moment and then nodded "Okay, I'll practice when I'm, done reading." With a smile and a nod the appeased boy headed off again in search of yet more books. As his body grew so too did his mind and appetite for knowledge, something Rex was glad of, age didn't always signify maturation but Gus seemed to be on the right track.

Solving a mystery

“Doors always swing towards their hinges.” The words were a strange and confusing wake-up call for Rex. It was a Sunday morning and his day off, thus the brunet had been happily catching up on lost sleep; at least until a deranged shout had thrust his mind into a semi alert state. Not alert enough however to avoid the child shaped mass that had darted into the room and now flung itself upon his bed. It was only by the grace of God, Rex thought, that Gus had landed on his stomach and not his bladder.

The currently human formed werewolf took a moment to regain the breath that had been knocked out of him and composed himself, as much as one could while lying flat on their back, before he turned his amber gaze upon his son. Rex's eyes looked up passed thin glass lenses into the clearly excited and almost expectant, pitch black eyes of Gus who seemed quite content to be using his torso as a perch.

“ Doors swing towards their hinges, I remembered that from an Encyclopedia Brown book when I was reading this,” Gus waved a small soft cover novel in Rex’s face. The boy’s hand moved a bit too fast for him to make out the title but Rex could see sort of detective looking guy or another on it. Not that this was surprising giving Gus' general choice in novels including the aforementioned Encyclopedia Brown child detective series. “Anyways I was supposed to figure out who the liar was cause he’s the murderer.”

The spectacle wearing child paused there for a moment whole body going ridged, clearly showing his discomfort at the thought of death. The Aqua skinned boy took a deep breath through his hooked mouth and continued “ I knew he was lying during his confession because he said he swung the door of his room out to hit a guard and knock them over so he could escape.” Again Gus gave Rex an expectant look.

“And he was lying because of hinges?” A part of the police officer was always pleased to see Gus taking such an interest in crime and detective fiction but sometimes it got out of hand. Like now when he was torn between trying to be proud of Gus for figuring something out and wanting to tell the boy that coming into his room and jumping on him first thing in the morning was not acceptable.

“Yes, he was describing how the hinges were all fancy earlier when he was supposedly trapped in the room but I know doors swing towards their hinges so I knew he was the liar and killer.” This time Gus seemed to make it past the word okay though the black horned boy was also busy waving his hands about and gesturing to the hinges on the door to Rex's own room. “It’s the first time I figured out a book mystery by myself.”

“I see, well then why don’t you let me get dressed and I’ll take you to IHOP.” Bribery a success, Rex sat up in time to catch the dark tips of Gus’ large tail fins retreating out the door. As he massaged his chest and swung his legs over the side of the bed the man decided that due to the circumstances he'd forgive the early morning attack. After all you could only solve your first mystery once
