Now We Are Free
[Zodiacs + Survivors]

Quote:

For once, Tara was not trying to figure out what was going on. Not that she hadn't tried futilely at first, but it soon became apparent that she wasn't getting anywhere and it would be better to just watch and wait. For what, she still wasn't sure.

Before she could reflect on the unfairness of Hero getting to be the leader, her brain felt like it was a piece of Silly Putty. It was being stretched- painfully- in all directions, and it felt rather like someone had pressed it against the newsprint of memories that didn't belong to her. Aries was the rightful leader, Captain of the Zodiac Guard, and Aquarius felt ferociously loyal, all while she struggled against it.

The carbon copy memories didn't stop there. Space. Not the final frontier of her dreams, but a cold battlefield. Then the coldness was seared away by a burning pain on her finger. She was not alone out there. Every one of these people was out there with her. They weren't the strange classmates she'd barely spoken to, but brothers and sisters in arms, united to protect their Princess... and one other.

Then the fire surrounded her, and Tara felt herself swaying slightly. She almost regretted her harsh words to Giselle about methods of death. This was bad. It was painful. But it wasn't the knowledge that she was going to die that bothered this copy memory, it was the knowledge that she had failed. She had let everyone else die. The line would not be held.

Shaking her head, Tara squeezed her neighbor's hands tightly. She wouldn't let that happen, not again. Failure was not an option. Though she still didn't really understand the force moving her, Tara understood enough to pray, dammit.

For everyone we care about... Tara's parents flashed through her mind. Her brother. Laney, Esen, other students. We won't make the same mistake, not again. Opal Crystal, please help us out of this. We won't let you down again! We can do this!

The Zodiac Guard is finally assembled and, with the help of the surviving and healed humans, break the curse over Barren Pines.

Once More, With Feeling
[Tara + Pierrette]

Following the destruction of Barren Pines, Tara wakes up in the hospital and tries to make sense out of the situation.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 27, 2009 9:28 pm

History had never been Tara's favorite subject. She rarely cared about what had happened, as long as she could look towards what would happen. What could happen. The future was everything to her. Rather than living in the present moment, she lived in a time of her own, ahead of everyone else. When she found herself forced to look back, it gave her a headache.

It didn't help that everyone had a different story, either.

She remembered the school. The Science Club. Wandering around as a member of the undead. Becoming un-undead. As she ran through the timeline, the memories got hazier and hazier. When she got past the woman who'd healed her, she found herself thinking that she'd been in space, in a fire, and on the school grounds all at the same time.

The word around the hospital was that the whole thing was part of an organ trafficking ring. They had been missing, proclaimed dead. She hadn't seen the list of survivors yet, and desperately wanted to, but none of the nurses would disclose that information to her. How did they expect her to put two and two together without information?

While she debated slipping her medication into the next nurse's coffee, a tall man appeared in the doorway. He stood there for several seconds before rushing at Tara's bed, knocking over an IV stand in his haste. "Oh my god, you're really here!"

"Kent! I-" Tara was cut off, her air cut off by a crushing bear hug. She tried for a few seconds, but in the end let him just hold on. He'd let go, eventually. And it wasn't like she hadn't missed him too.

When he finally pulled away, she could see that he was barely holding himself together. For her sake, as always. He looked her over, shaking his head the whole time. "I didn't really believe it when they called. They were so sure you were dead, last year."

Tara opened her mouth, then shut it abruptly. No use in telling him 'yes, I did die then. And again recently. But everything's peachy now, brother dear.'

He looked at her oddly for a second, but continued. "As soon as you're able, we'll go home. I moved back, after... after you were gone. I had to. But I kept your room just the same."

"You moved back? What about your degree?" Tara looked at Kent, aghast. He'd been so excited to get into the doctorate program, and now he'd dropped out? Because of her?

As if reading her mind, Kent shook his head. "Don't worry about it. I can always finish it later. You're more important. And after... after it happened, I just couldn't keep it up. Nobody could." He fell silent for a moment, and Tara reached over and held his hand. "It's okay," he added quickly, squeezing hers tightly. "Let's just focus on getting you better and back home."

Home. Somehow, Tara knew she couldn't go home. Not yet. But that wasn't what bothered her most. She looked around, a cross expression forming on her face. "Kent, where are they? Why aren't they here"

There was only one 'they' she could be talking about. Kent sighed. "Don't start this now, Tara. It's a happy day."

"Then why aren't they here? Did they send you to pick me up like a package?" Tara rolled her eyes and let herself fall back against her pillows. "I guess this shows how they really feel. I come back from the dead, and they just send you to get me. It's winter break, they're not even working! And you- why are you letting them get off like this?"

"Tara-"

Tara wasn't listening. She was shutting her eyes and crossing her arms and being bitterly angry and disappointed. "Did they even notice when I died? Or did they just go back to work as normal? No, they probably celebrated. I've always just been in the way, and without me they could do whatever. Did I just ruin Christmas? Well I'm sorry, but-"

Kent reached forward and clamped his hand over Tara's mouth tightly. "You have no idea what we went through," he said evenly. "So don't try to make any of us feel guilty. And don't bite my hand, I'm not done speaking yet. If I take it away, will you listen?"

Much as she wanted to tune him out, Tara reluctantly nodded, and Kent pulled his hand away, wiping it on his pants. "Dad's parking the rental car. Mom's talking to the doctors to find out when you can be released. I was supposed to wait for them, but I just... I needed to make sure you were really okay. They should be here any second."

As if on cue, a couple rushed into the room. The woman, on the short side with royal blue hair and dark eyes hidden behind glasses, was carrying an armful of papers. The man, quite tall with black hair and bright blue eyes, had his arm around her. They both looked around the ward searchingly, their eyes lighting as they saw Kent. And more importantly, Tara.

Tara watched as her parents both began to cry, coming over to her. And as she reached up to hug her mother, she found herself crying too. "I'm sorry," she whispered. "I didn't mean to make you worry."

"Oh baby." Melanie Kavanaugh smoothed her daughter's hair, her tears helping it lie flat. "Baby, we're just so glad you're okay. We thought-"

Gregory Kavanaugh reached down and held Tara's shoulder firmly. "It doesn't matter. You're here now, and that's what matters. We can't wait to take you home."

Home. Kent had said the same thing, and Tara knew she couldn't go back home. But she didn't want to tell them that just yet. For once, she was the most important person in her family. She wasn't going to ruin that, not yet. She just leaned back and felt her parents around her, her brother next to her, and knew it would all work out somehow.
