Dryads are tree nymphs and originate from the Greek pantheon. They were specifically considered to be nymphs of the Oak; this then became tree nymphs and now has been diluted further to wood nymphs. They are considered to be the female in terms of gender which may explain their feminine protector status. They are often seen being pursued by their male counterparts, satyrs.
The Greeks considered them to be demi-gods. This means that they have a similar status to the Gods of Mount Olympus but they are not immortal. They are seen as beautiful spirits that protect the trees in woodlands. Each individual Dryad is linked to an individual tree. They protect and honour this tree but they do not live in it. A separate branch of the species lives in the tree and they are called hamadryads. These live in the actual tree and also protect it. The life of the hamadryads is specifically linked to the life of the tree. If the tree is cut down and dies then the dryad does too. Therefore, the dryads would seek revenge on those that caused the death of the hamadryads.
They are very loving and peaceful. They are not immortal but they can have a very long life. These wonderful qualities have led them to become much loved and form many allies, such as Artemis.
Fear of upsetting the dryads has led to mortals leaving offerings at the bottom of trees. They do this in order to gain permission and prevent upset within the dryad realm.
