Vanguardian gestured at the dark opening in the earth and stone. "Do you smell that?" It was a peculiar scent, one she hadn't smelled before. The atmosphere seemed heavy, too. Like something wanted people to stay away. A warning? Or was there something to be kept safe? "What is it?" she asked Vincent. The north was the only terrain she hadn't visited, so it was odd to not recognize a scent. But if the northerner knew what it was, then it wouldn't be so bad.

Either way, Van readied herself to enter the domain. That was her nature, to learn for better or for worse.

Shaking his head, Vincent stood back up and looked around. He didn't see Vanguardian anywhere. His ears twitched as he picked up a voice nearby. Perhaps that was her. He began walking in the direction of the voice.

After a few minutes he ended up at the spot where Van was. He scowled at her as he walked up to the hole in the earth. "How could you just run off like that?! You're so lucky that I can hear really well otherwise I would have been lost in the woods!" He snapped at her turning to the opening, "What's this? A den?" He sniffed and caught the peculiar scent. His head went back and bit and he stepped back. It didn't smell right, almost deadly. He had a bad feeling that either something dangerous lived there or that there was one of those gases he had heard about that can harm animals in there. "I don't know if we should go in there....."

Vanguardian trotted over and sniffed the entrance. "I don't know either, but doesn't that make you want to check it out?" She pawed at the earth around it. It was loose and moist... and kind of muddy. "Oh..." she said, wiping her paw on the grass. "I'm not dead yet, am I?" she sang. The young helix had been to many places and had many dangerous adventure. She hadn't lost a limb.

Without another thought, she squeezed through the hole and disappeared into the strange domain.

Vincent stared at Van. "Yes but I'd prefer to keep my life, thank you. I have no plans on dying while exploring some cave." He said rolling his eyes, "Of course you're not dead..... must have really good luck." The last part was muttered after she squeezed into the hole.

Sighing he followed her wincing at the tight squeeze. He couldn't see anything at first since it was dark and the only light was blocked by him. He move letting some light filter in but it didn't do much to help.

Van's ears flicked in amusement. "Luck? There shouldn't be a problem, then," the young wolf sang. "I can't see much, must be pretty deep." Van thought back at a time she visited a human temple. They had fire sticks one could carry. "Do you know of a temple around here?" There wasn't much chance that he did, he was about as new to this place as she.

Vincent rolled his eyes and shook his head. Clearly she had better hearing than what he though because she heard him mutter about luck. "Yeah. Must be deep. Who knows there may be a drop off just up ahead. We'll be in trouble if that's the case." He said taking a step forward. He didn't fall down so there was no drop off..... yet. "No. I don't know of any temples. ...... That's one of those buildings humans use to worship something right?" He said. He had never seen one before since there weren't any up in the north that he knew of.

Van backed up out of the hole, shook out her coat, then suddenly burst off in an entirely random direction. She didn't look back or wait for Vincent, leaving him stranded in the middle of the forest. But that was okay, after what seemed like quite a while, she appeared back on the site.

"You can right to, but not back, or else your fire goes out. Ready or not?" She reared up on her hind legs and swiped at Vincent's nose, then trotted over to the tunnel entrance. She gestured with her head, then was down the hole without another thought.

Vincent turned in time to see Van leaving the cave and running off. "Hey!" He called after her. She just left him! He huffed and sat down. Was she coming back? He was considering just leaving when she came back.

"Where did you go?" He said pulling back when she swatted at his nose. He was confused by what she said and sat dumbfounded for a minute after she wandered into the cave. Shaking his head he stood up and followed after her.

Van pointed at the burning torch. "Human temple," she mumbled. But it didn't seem to help much. The light seemed to cast more shadows on the walls than there should be with only two helix in the tunnels. And the way forward seemed to have no end. "Deep," Van commented, though she knew it was unnecessary. Just then, she felt the earth beneath her give way. Vincent was behind her, and darkness was before her. She had no choice but to drop. The fire went out like a life...

Van landed with a muffled thump. A quick shake told her there was nothing broken. "Vincent," she called in the general direction of where she figured was up. "You around?"

Vincent nodded. He wondered what a human temple was like. He'd have to check one out sometime later. "I see." He said following her back, "It certainly is...." He trailed off as he felt the ground tremble a bit followed by a loud sound. The ground must not be stable here and was giving away! He looked to where Van was but she was gone..... and so was the light.

"Van?!" He called out immediately. He paused cocking his head and heard a faint reply. "Yeah I'm up here!" He called back as he carefully made his way to the edge. It was still unstable and a small piece of earth broke off falling down towards Van. He peeked over the edge and saw her down quite a ways. "You okay? That was quite a fall."

"Fine," Van called back. "There's something soft down here. Smells like... Ash." Was that safe? If something had been burning down here... But the floor was cold as the darkness they were trapped in. Nothing had burned there for ages. "Are you going to stay there while I look for a way back, or are you comin'?"

Vincent listened to Van and looked around for a way down. However the only way he could find was to jump down and just fall. "Ash? Hm.... better be careful while down there." He called down, "I'm coming down too. So move out of the way. Don't want to land on you." He wanted a moment for her to move and then jumped. He landed on his paws and immediately crumbled to the ground. "Ow..... the landing could have gone better." He muttered as he stood up.

But Vanguardian wasn't listening... Her mind wandered as her eyes saw nothing. In her mind's eyes, she saw a human place. The spacious cave was filled with light from their lamps and they danced about a sacred fire right in the center of the room. Van reached out a paw to feel the space, but she found resistance. The images were a lie, there was no dancing, no joy. She should have made Vincent go back, it might indeed be a dead end here. And then she was jumped. "Oooh, get off!" she exclaimed.

Vincent looked down realizing that he was standing on something soft. "Oh! Sorry." He said getting off of her. He looked around letting his eyes adjust. He spotted a wall just in front of them and he looked to the right. There was nothing there and the same was on the left. "We might be able to get out if we go to the left or right..... they might lead to a path."

"Well, if we come to a dead end we can just turn back around, right?" Vanguardian took the first few steps and found that further along, the ground became hard like packed earth and she could walk faster without kicking up the choking dust. "Come along, Vincent! We can run here! No ash..." Not that she was sure it was a good thing. She dreaded the worst the first minutes, especially when the floor began to slope downwards, but there was finally a hint of light and she was sure everything would come together soon enough.

"Come along," she said again, eager to be out of the darkness.
