There's something about these roses...

Carcinogenic fibers laced their way over a hundred crimson petals. Once brilliant hues reflected silver spectrum as the midday sunlight cascaded over the beautiful cancer that had overtaken the rose. Delicate digits extended, cupping lamenting blossoms as they fell limp against his wanton support as though they had not long left for this world. The array of mottled stages of infection was disturbing to their normal caretaker who wondered at how quickly it had advanced. However - he knew as dramatic as the queen of the floral world appeared, the matter was a simple one to be sure. It would require some doing but he had all the care and time to give them.

Entirely enraptured, his attentions wavered of the world about him. He'd quite forgotten the glorious Eden his brother Damien had provided them and fell prey to his own musings as he was oft to do if left to his devices. As such, he was solitary in his endeavor and had none to chastise him with cautious uttering that may have entirely spared him his plight - for as Raizen rose from the bed of radiant silver roses, he missed the stone pillar he'd rested his garden equipment on not twenty minutes before and ran into it at the force of which one undertakes an endeavor of greatest importance. The impact knocked him back and he staggered. His foot caught one of the elegant stone arches that lined the garden bed and found himself swimming in the abyss of unconsciousness as a sound thud resonated from his fall.

Spirits working for the powers that be groaned as they had to drag yet another soul from the body of an unconscious being, summoning the now empty shell off to another location. The body, now with a small unbreakable metal necklace around his neck, was placed onto a cot in a miniature spaceship floating somewhere in the middle of space outside of Tison.

The soul was sent to bond with that of a Tison God, long dead and in need of a new life. When the two did bond, a relic appeared on the chain back on Rai's body. It was to be the house for the soul till it regained its previous form. And soon enough, both souls were back in their proper 'houses' - Rai in his body, and the spirit in the relic.

This allowed the man to wake up and face what appeared to be a purple skinned woman dressed in a red bellhop outfit. Her hair was brown shortcut in a bob style, and she looked utterly pleased to see the man awake.

"YAY! YOU'RE UP! I CAN GIVE YOU THE GOOD NEWS!"

Shorn petals drifted languidly from the raven tresses as the man groaned softly, ice blue eyes fluttering open to see sky first and then a…woman? This caused him to sit up instinctively as there were so few of the female persuasion about the castle that it was in itself an occasion having her there. Faint pink hues rose to his pallid visage as he observed her and then quietly found his voice. “Greeting, miss. I apologize for being so…callous…but who are you and what news are you talking about?” His tone was moreso of astonishment than annoyance. He was an Arrikanez after all and they hardly every minded guests.

Once he’d regained his prior position of being fully upright, he bowed elegantly to her and then rose with a cordial smile, awaiting what she seemed so enthusiastic . One matter did capture his attention was as he’d lowered himself in grand gesture, a chain of silver hung before his vision before retreating backwards onto his chest were his gaze promptly shifted into clear confusion. Had he been wearing this before?

"I'm Cami but that's not important right now. What's important is that yooooou're gonna be a father! The funny relic they put around your neck - see see? - is gonna turn into a baaaaaby. And you gotta raise it - dunno why or why they chose you but you do - and that's the gist of it." the female told him with many excited nods and bounces.

The mans eyes widened noticeably at the news and his usual composure slipped for a minute. A child? Here? Granted it was not uncommon for the Arrikanez to find themselves with kids abounding, but it was so that it happened in your own back yard. How was he gonna explain this one to Dragon? The prior musing was shoved to the back of his mind as it all slowly registered. He nervously played at the pendant and tried to form it all rationally. "So I-I'm having a...baby...from this...and for no reason? What sort of child are we even talking about here? Where does it come from, how do I take care of it, is there anything I should know?" The latter queries soon became rushed as Raizen grew more frantic, clearly struggling with this sudden smack to the brain.

Cami just grinned at the man. She didn't exactly react normally to things like agitation. Bouncing a bit on her toes, the woman fired off answers one by one.

"Yep, no reason whatsoever. And given the relic prolly a moooooooon powered baby - how kyoot! - and it comes from the necklace of course cause the necklace holds the soul of a dead god from the realm I'm from and it needs to be reborn. You prolly take care of it like a normal baby - they don't get powers for a while I hear - and um...........YAY!"

Yay? YAY?!! Raizen wasn't sure what to make of it. The womans emanations resounded painfully through the corridors of his perception as she bounded. He'd essentially been indirectly knocked up and was now contemplating whether to be overjoyed at the matter or completely furious. The neurotransmitters shot rapid signals, imploring him to say something but now completely baffled he could only manage a soft groan and nodded. "Ok...Ok. So I'm "pregnant" with a dead god...ok..." He seemed calm and then glanced up at the bouncing, ecstatic. One could almost hear his sanity slowly warping. "The hell...what am I to do now, madame?"

"Um...........................GO HOME, PUT A PINEAPPLE ON YOUR HEAD, DANCE AROUND AND GET READY FOR A BABY?!" she suggested, a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge open mouthed grin taking over her whole face as she spoke.

Raizen stared at her for a good few minutes. An errant breeze tugged wistfully at his tresses as the minutes passed. One might very well have perceived him to have finally succumb to the insanity. The phantom remnant of a smile then tugged gently, at his features and spread infectiously. A soft chuckle fell from his lips, then a laugh, and then a rackious guffaw as he clutched his sides at the very idea. "My gods... I can't BREATHE!!! You, my dear, are absolutely...*gasp* Off your trolley! Pineapples? You would give many of my family a run for their money, I assure you that."

Cami jumped excitedly. "Wow! You're smart! How'd you know I used to drive a trolley? I'm definitely offa it now - they kicked me out for driving it into space randomly a few too many times. Random trips for ice creams and all that." the young woman said cheerfully.

"Though, gotta say, all the baby stuff? It's for serious."

Raizen composed himself as best he could and nodded, deciding to take her at her word for now. If she were lying than at the least he'd been granted a good laugh. If she were truthful though...best be prepared. He glanced at the pendant and fiddled with it again. The idea, much to his chagrin, was growing on him. "Serious, eh...well...thank you, I suppose. I'll be happy to take care of it, regardless of what happens."

"Okies! Shall I send you home then?" Cami asked, bouncing on her toes.

Raizen smiled and nodded decisively. There was a great deal to do and uncertain time in which to do it - so best to start as soon as he could. Starting with his explanation to Dragon, though he was sure this would be trivial enough to his love. "Yes, please, and it was a pleasure to meet you, Cami. I hope we meet again someday."

"All right. Just go stand on the big plate thing, close your eyes and count to ten! Don't open them till you're done and do it sorta slowish." the purple on commanded, showing the man over to an odd floating disc off to the side of the small ship. When Raizen stood on it, during the closed eyes countdown he was sent back to his home and when he reopened his eyes, he was back where he'd been taken from.

The duo stood in the crux of one of the deepest political debates of the family Arrikanez. Scarlet eyes glared scornfully at their sibling opposite, livid with great enthusiasm. Ice blue met the smoldering gaze with cool indifference, clearly justified in the belief that the man who possessed such clear hues. A pallid digit pointed to the right and the argument ensued anew, the woman lashing out with a voice of liquid contempt.

"It's a girl." to which her brother, parent of the beautiful relic that hung loosely about his exposed throat replied, "It's a boy." He pointed in the opposite direction towards the section specified for such gender roles.

The surrounding patrons avoided the pair with a sense of urgency - as though a bomb may very well go off if the feeble request for their vacancy was voiced.

Donna, Raizen's sister, turned a frigid shoulder to him and glanced at the entrance to the section. They had been here for over an hour, undecided as to which section to further delve into with the amount they'd been allowed for his endeavor. She sniffed derisively at her brother. "I don't see why you want to spend so much damn money on the wrong things. I'm telling you - it's a girl. You asked for my help and intuition and I'm giving it to you, so I suggest you follow my lead."

Raizen shook his head firmly and started towards the Boy section. "Honestly, Donna, we both know it's a boy. Arrikanez are atypically male and I will not hear of any further argumentation now-" His progress was halted as she quartered him and forcefully shoved him back. "GIRL. It's a girl damnit - and we're not going to spend any money until you admit it."

The man was too much of a gentleman to return the gesture and finally held both hands up in resignation. He would not so readily surrender his stance but had had quite enough of this. "I agree to disagree, how about that?" To this offering of camaraderie Donna felt compelled to hold her tongue and nod, though a final comment could not be withheld as she queried in some annoyance, "Are you sure the purple bellhop didn't say for sure?" "I'm sure. As far as we know, it's an 'It'. And I don't know how to shop for an It. So...I need your help. Happy now?" Pleased enough with the matter of his pride being knocked down a few pegs, a smile formed upon the woman's visage and she nodded, taking her brothers hand and leading him into the middle of either section.

On either side the gender stereotypical paraphernalia surrounded them. It didn't aide them in remaining neutral, but it was possible once they became selective to things that would please either or. For the room interior they chose a darker shade of sapphire blue, complimented by soft silver sheer curtains and accents. The bedding reflected the silver as well, carrying a design of small, embroidered stars of white across it. A circular area rug was purchased as well to complete the silver foray as they moved into the toy portion. Donna chose a set of building blocks and Raizen some reusable modeling clay in a wide array of colors. Some stuffed animals were thrown in for good measure until the basket was full.

Satisfied, they checked out and headed home - each eyeing the other with a sense of friendly competition for which amongst them would win favor with the true identity of the unborn god.

Tiny motes of transparent silver drifted lazily through the sunlight that flooded through the cracked panes of glass. A great accumulation had been stirred up into the air from its usual resting place upon the antiques of the attic by a rare visitor. Raizen was the aforementioned guest and had been rooting through the various boxes with fervor for a particular thing. Mr. Woolysworth to be precise. The stuffed ram had been the man's constant companion as a small child and had been well worn with love through the years of joy it brought. In fact, he'd been loved so much and for so long that he'd all but fallen apart - stemming the need to put him away for good in the attic to preserve what little was left of him. However, there was a new baby on the way and Raizen felt compelled to give something of connected bond between them. Now if he could find the stuffed creature, he could DO so. But where had he put it? That was the question that had been gnawing at his brain as he frantically scoured each box he came across.

The answer came in the form of tiny wool shreds. Frayed fleece had fallen from the ram and now littered the thickly dusted floorboards, an essential trail of breadcrumbs which led Rai right to it - or what was left. By the time he found his long-lost friend, the doll had undergone some drastic changes. The wooly fleece coat was no more than a few threads that protruded from the grey speckled cloth that composed the body, and an eye had fallen out. His silk top hat had fallen in and flat and one of the horns was now hanging off the head by a scrap of fabric. Mr. Woolysworth was not so wooly anymore and had succeeded in his great age to bring a grown man close to tears as he hugged his old toy. The damage was fixable but, hey, the loss of a childhood toy was in the grand spectrum as traumatic as the loss of a king's crown. Raizen did flush with embarrassment at his flustered composure and assured himself it would all be well as he vacated the attic.

Luckily for the sad remains of Mr. Woolysworth, the little boy he'd once romped with had grown up to be a doctor of considerable talent and steady hand. A hand with a flair for sewing at that. Raizen stroked the necklace, as he often did as a nervous habit with it, as he lined up his instruments and got to work. First he had to take care of that awful discoloration. The plush toy was carefully lowered into warm water, scrubbed and bathed and pampered by the insistent suds. The grey lifted grudgingly from it, leaving the original white to stand out as near new. Rai dried him off once he was sure the grime was gone and set the naked ram onto his surgical table. With a suture and some strong thread he began restitching the entire toy, making sure to reattach the eye and horn carefully so it stood upright again. Once that was done he took up a hook needle and some soft thread and began looping it in. This took considerable time and the evening had set in before the illustrious wool coat was fluffier than it had ever been those years ago. A new hat and a flower or two was set gently on the head and one could practically hear it bleat.

Whatever the baby turned out to be, it would know one day the love placed in the small toy. But for now, it was placed quietly on a small bed in an empty room, waiting to be picked up and loved anew by tiny hands that would soon arrive.

Dear Journal,

I have no idea how in the gods great plan for my existence this all came to be. Before you misjudge me, I'm not upset about the matter. A bit confused as to why I have suddenly become a child concierge, yes, but not exactly upset about it. Besides the odd relic that has refused to relinquish my neck I have also come into the parental role of another child at the same instance! I knew her mother from having escorted several of our medical interns through an exhibit of her museum which featured medicinal instruments throughout the ages. The trip had become a sort of ritual visit, whenever it was on display, and I came to know the curator very well. Well enough to, entirely my surprise, she begged of me a favor most curious. It seems she’s leaving for overseas work and cannot have her “daughter” accompany her. The journey will be of some months so in the meantime, I am now the father figure to a Fae child as well!

The name of the child is Alice and she’s a sweet, quiet child, but I’ve no idea what to do for her! I’ve only just now finished preparation for the god child supposedly emerging in but a few days from now and now I’ve got another to worry about! These two children will be siblings to two already existing charges of mine. Alice has a newfound brother in Nights. Sadly, this is not true for two children of flesh and blood and I fear Alice will be quite annoyed by Night’s bouncy attitude. Hopefully they will find some common ground and be of good enough standing to allow me more attention towards the baby.

Oh journal, what am I to do? Dragon is helping me every step of the way, bless his soul, but it’s simply overwhelming. How does one balance so many conflicting personalities in a single household? I fear that it will have an effect on my lover’s child, Eek, as well. I believe the best course of action would be to seek out guidance from the preexisting parents of these strange god-like children and see how they’ve managed to stay sane. Granted, I haven’t an idea whether or not they actually are at this point, or how to locate them. Perhaps the purple bellhop will come back and guide me? Random as she was, I almost wish her company to give me an idea. For now, all I can do is stand firm in my authority for the children and hope for the best. It may be some time before I get a quiet moment to write again, most likely when bedtime descends upon the house like an angel of mercy, but fret not – I will be jotting down my fretful musings again soon. Until then, whatever force is reading this, pray for my sanity.

-Raizen

Coffee Beans and Strange Dreams

The husk remnants of mahogany brown shards littered the vanilla tabletop of Karai Memorial's break room. The early morning air was fragrant with the lingering smell of cocoa and espresso married beautifully in the wakening effects of gods mercy. Delicate digits rummaged lazily through the plastic container the chocolate coated beans had been so plentifully in supply of when he'd begun his shift. However, the half lidded eyes of ice-blue flickered dangerously low as the doctor wondered when that had been. Seventy-two hours, he knew, was a dangerously long time to be awake but between children, work, and keeping his lover company, the need to stay awake had driven this caffeine high binge which he was steeply coming down from.

The crash was debilitating and mercifully dull. Raizen's hand ceased its search for the remainder of its driving force and lay still. His head slumped forward, the relic awkwardly nuzzled between chest and features as sleep claimed him.

Caffeine does odd things to ones dreams though, and although the sleep was a welcome escape from the noises that continued past the hospital doors outside - his rest was somehow going to be considerably less restful than even he could anticipate. The relic was the last flash of any conscious thought he had before pure blackness consumed him.

Dgcakes
As he drifted off the rest of the way, the man's soul - which a ghostly version of the relic around his neck - was drawn up out of his body and forced to float in midair. In front of him was what seemed like a very huge door floating randomly in the air before him. And the relic was glowing and sort of floating up in front of him like it wanted Raizen to go forth and open that door.

The passage wasn't the strangest thing he'd ever encountered in a dream. Hessitantly, Raizen moved forth and gently placed his hands upon the door. Despite the size, it seemed to open easily to the touch allowing the curious soul to wander in and forth. The illumination of the relic was of great comfort and compelled him to go farther to see what waited on the other side.

Dgcakes
Once he'd passed through the door, it vanished behind him, leaving the man in a new scene entirely. Before him lay a beautiful female who seemed to be part...rabbit? She was chained down with strange gold colored crystals and seemed to just be sleeping, though no breath went through her body. The relic seemed to be drawing the man towards her. Huh, how odd.

The doctor in him, tired as he was felt compelled to approach - though regardless, the relic would have accomplished the same thing. He moved to her side and felt an overwhelming sense of sadness to see how she lay so still. The woman looked like a fragile doll, peaceful and serene, yet as he lay a hand on her shoulder to see if she would wake he knew that something had gone awry and she would not do so, nomatter if he tried rouse her.

Dgcakes
As he touched her, her body began to glow in a silvery white fashion, turning into almost pure light. The necklace about his throat did as well and suddenly shot from his throat into the mass of light before him, causing it to shrink. When the glowing and shrinking stopped, before him sat a cute little baby girl. How sweet!

Raizen clutched his throat as the pendant was ripped from it. No pain resulted from the sudden departure but he could not supress a gasp of shock as it left him and shot into the woman. A burst of pure light overtook his senses for a moment before it slowly diminished into the small figure that remained.

Gold chains fell away from her like lace as the infant sat up and gazed into the face of her chosen guardian. Wide amber eyes shone like some alien starlight from betwixt strands of ebony that fell freely about her features. They barely but grazed her shoulders, stopping below her visage in wisps. From seemingly nowhere, large hare-like ears surfaced, alert atop her head and seemed to pick up the most minute traces of his heartbeat, rotating forth to listen better and cause said beat to quicken as the man observed her. The child was not human, this was certain, and to further drive this home, she was covered in the softest silver fur one could imagine. Translucent whiskers twitched thoughtfully as she wrinkled her nose a bit and tried to reach out and touch her father figure with tiny white tipped hands.

Raizen picked the girl up and cradled her a bit, finding that she also posessed a rather fluffy tail at the end of her being that wiggled happily as did her ears as he brought her against his chest. Content, the infant yawned wide and nestled into him, lowering her ears as she got comfortable - not yet asleep but decidedly pleased with the matter.

Dgcakes
The door back to their bodies reopened behind him as he claimed the small one and the two were able to return and go back to sleeping properly. Well that was good at the very least but when they finally got up, there'd be a baby bunny girl to deal with.

It had been more than an eventful day and Raizen was exhausted by the time he and Dragon got home. All the children had already been put to bed by their assumed godmother and the castle was as quiet as a shadow. The newly born little bunny girl was tucked into bed and kissed goodnight before the rounds were made and each child, knowing or not, received their goodnight kiss. All was so peaceful and calm as Rai slid beneath the suede comforter of his shared bed with Dragon and curled his arms around his lover and brother, drifting into the blissful unconsciousness of warm slumber. It seemed as though only a few seconds had passed over him...

And then the morning. The first thing that greeted his ears as the uncharacteristically feminine voice he was still growing accustom to. Delicate fingers shook him and ice blue optics fluttered open to the blurry shape of his older daughter, Alice. The fae child was unusually excited and nearly seemed to burst with exuberant excitement as she tugged his nightshirt and pointed out into the hall. "Papa, papa, the STORK, it CAME! Oh Papa, you have to come see!!!" The man moaned softly, obviously perturbed by being woken up so early. He gently tried to shoo her, if only to snatch five more minutes. "I'll see her in another ten minutes, Alice. I'm sure she'll still be there when I get up." The girl seemed crestfallen but released him, suddenly very aware of herself. She curtsied, not knowing what else to do. "Sorry, Papa...I'm sure she'll be alright. After all, Nights is watching her so-" And that was as far as she got. Raizen was suddenly wide awake and much to her bewilderment tore from the bed and out of the room, dashing down the hall.

The jester boy wasn't sure what to do with it. He tilted his head one way and then another, watching the small bunny girl sleep on peacefully. She was so boring...just laying there...it was morning, after all, and by rights he was sure she should be awake. Nights figured that she must be like his dad and need help sometimes with waking up, so decided to be a responsible big brother and do so! An almost sinister look crossed his face as he got close to the bunny and prepared to yell "GOOD MORNING!!!" He inhaled deeply, throwing his head back dramatically and began to let rip the words only to find they came muffled as a hand clasped itself to his mouth. The boy looked up to find his father nearly having had a heart attack from the experience and trying to remain calm and absolute as he pulled his son gently away from the bedside and released his hand. The vividly clad jester child rocked back and forth on his heels a little, smiling away cheerfully as he inclined his head and spoke quietly, "Morning, Daddy." Raizen shook his head a little, making sure the young one was still asleep before addressing his attentions to Nights. He tried to sound happier to see him than he was. "Good morning, Nights. What exactly were you doing to your new sister?" The boy, known for his spontaneous tales, decided on something quickly. "I was waking her from a spell cast by a slumbersaur. You see..." To Raizen's relief, Alice had slowly meandered the way of the room again and interrupted the boy before he could get started, ending in promptly, "There's no such thing as a slumbersaur, Nights. Besides, she's a baby. Babies need sleep. Right, Papa?" Raizen nodded and stroked back the jester's "ears" gently, smiling a little. "Yes. Now why don't you both go downstairs and see if Damien has breakfast started." Alice forgot her eagerness over the baby for a moment at the mention of food and curtsied again, "Yes, Papa." and flounced off. Nights was noticeably less happy about the whole ordeal and kicked the carpet a little, gaze cast away. He looked pitiful, much to his father's dismay. Raizen didn't mean to have hurt the boy's feelings, persay, and relented a little. He winked down at his son and ruffled his ears. "That was very brave, Nights. I think you're an excellent big brother for protecting her from the slumbersaurus and all." This caught the boy completely off guard, as he was usually scolded for his tales, and his eyes were wide as he looked up into his father's smiling face. "You mean it, Daddy?" The man nodded a bit, "I do." and to this end received a loving hug from the child. He returned it and watched as the boy happily ran from the room to tell his sister that slumbersaurs were real and give his father a moment of peace with which to retrieve the initial upstart.

Raizen gently picked up the sleeping bunny from her bed and cradled her close. She didn't waken as she was carried through the hall, down the stairs, across the living room, and into the kitchen where the others were already eating. A few gave their brother rather curious looks, confused as to what he was holding, why it was at the table, and why a fae and a jester had come tearing down the stairs talking about storks and slumbersaurs. Only Donna seemed to be aware and motioned to the baby with her spoon. She was rather smug, "I told you it'd be a girl, didn't I? What'd you name her?" It hadn't much dawned on him but a hot blush of embarrassment crept to his cheeks as he looked down at the little girl. "I...erm....I haven't, yet." This caused Zael to nearly choke as he swallowed what he had as best he could for laughing. The redhead leaned back in his seat, laughing at his brother. "You didn't NAME the lucky charm? The ******** Rai, you're a horrible parent, you know that?" "ZAEL! Language." The boy stuck his tongue out at his older sibling, still amused by the matter. He was interrupted by his sister who flicked a bit of pancake at him. "He has a point, Rai. She needs a name. What did you have in mind?" Alice piped up, eager with suggestions. "Oh, name her Mary, Papa! Or, or perhaps you might name her Dinah, or Elizabeth." Nights shook his head frequently at that and made a face. "Not those names, name her Mystic or Muse. OOO! Name her ALAKAZHAM!!!" All of these met a disapproving look from the others of the congregation who began heavily debating on the subject.

Finally it came down to Damien smacking his ladle against a pan. This caused everyone to stop what they were doing and stare at him. The illustriously handsome boy was not prone to anger, but was more than generally protective of his kitchen and dining room. He set down the pot and ladle and crossed his arms, fixing his family with a gentle but FIRM look that spoke louder than he would ever raise his own voice. They all sat down and looked back to their food, playing with it a bit. Having just arrived from his kitchens, Damien raised a brow and approached the baby bun, gently rubbing her ears back. "Now, what's all this about, eh? Cute rabbit, Rai." The elder nodded and looked down at her, still lost as to what to call her. "I just wish I knew her name."

It was then the chilling presence of a darker force filled the chamber, familiar but none the less creepy. The older of the psychic twins had arrived and now leaned in the doorway, depthless violet eyes of the galaxy surveying the small child. It was unsettling and caused her parent to shift protectively around her, though there was nothing he would be able to do if Evel sought the little bunny harm. However, instead of some cryptic message of despairing fate bestowed her, the boy simply gave a smile cold and clear as ice and casually remarked, "You should name her Amber." And then he turned and left, deciding the company was too crowded for his liking.

The words were of divine inspiration though and the general consensus agreed to the idea so warmly that Raizen had to agree. Gentle amber eyes opened to the murmurs of unfamiliarity and turned to meet those she knew. The little one smiled, and her father returned affection as he greeted her with a kiss to the head. "Good morning, and welcome to the family, Amber."

"Girls" Day Out

User Image
PostPosted: Wed Mar 25, 2009 8:57 pm

Dear Diary...it was a phrase that opened so many things in a person's life. This seemed to be especially true when speaking about the hearts of young ladies. In the days of old, a diary was the mark of a noble young woman who knew the importance of chronicling her experiences so that one day she might learn and better from those penned words. Any parent of the time would long for their lass to take up pen to further her journey into the realm of refined education...and Raizen, being a hopeless romantic for those bygone times, was no different.

Amber, on the other hand, had NO idea what all this was for. The small girl had been dragged into an overwhelming mess. There seemed to be a million different kinds of everything! Pens, papers, books with funny pictures, books with nothing in them, bottle upon bottle of ink - it was a lot for a kid to handle. The large bunny ears that adorned her fell back in concern as she looked up at her father. He'd been chattering all morning about something or other and seemed to ignore whatever she had to say or worse... "Papa?"

"I know you're excited, Amber, but try to be patient! This is a marvelous day, you'll have a journal of your own just like Alice!" Like Alice. That seemed to be a popular phrase that Amber had become very familiar with. Alice was pretty, and smart, and so delicate...Amber wasn't really sure she liked being just like Alice, though the child hadn't learned to gather why yet. A tugging at his coat didn't seem to deter his fervor as the child sought attention, approval in her ideals as she whimpered again, "But Papa I-" "Will have to learn to write, I know, but Alice can teach you I'm sure. But I'll teach you first, so don't worry your delicate little head about it."

He still didn't get it! But as it didn't seem he would, Amber released the end of the coat and plopped herself down amongst the mess. After a while, a loud exclamation of decided pleasure came from where her father had been working and he approached her with one of those funny books with no words in it. He gently placed it in her lap, waiting to see her reaction. She had to admit, it was very pretty. The funny book had a silver crescent on it and lots of shades of blue and silver, along with other colors she wasn't sure of just yet. She ran a small hand over the shape that stood out so well in the cool metal working and offered a reluctant smile to him. "Thank you, Papa...I think..."

Raizen didn't seem to pick up on the child's less than enthusiastic remark and scooped her and the book up, taking her to a nearby armchair. Sitting down and settling her on his lap, he opened the book and found a pen. 'Dear Diary...' the words were flourished in a beautiful show of the man's calligraphy before he pressed it into her hand and took it in his. "See? I've taught you the alphabet and how to read, so now you will learn to write." Write what? Amber tilted her head back to look up at him, frowning a little. "Do I have to write what Alice writes?" For once he shook his head, causing her to relax. "In a diary, you write what you want. Such as, what you did that day, or about the things you think about. No one reads it but you."

It was that statement that caused the child not only to smile but know what she wanted to write first, once she knew how. She wiggled eagerly as the man explained the mechanics of it and gave her more than enough examples before finally she was able to make very basic sentences. Once assured she had the hang of it, Raizen was practically fit to burst as he set the child down and led her back to her room to pen her first entry.

Only once she was entirely alone in the comfort of that one place that she called her own, Amber carefully wrote beneath the words her father had scribed:

'Dear Diary

I do not want to be like Alice. My name is Amber. I wish my Papa knew that.

Bye'

Short, sweet, and best of all...secret. The child read them over and over again before closing it and setting the book down on her nightstand. She didn't know why she had written them - but they were there and it was a liberating feeling. Finally, something really knew her name and no one was going to read it and take it away from her - not even Alice.
