It had snowed the previous night; thick, fluffy flakes had fallen for hours while the sun hid its face. Now, as Ayelen stood there with her wings tight to her back for warmth, it was nearly up to her knees. Her cerulean eyes scanned what had been an open plain the night before, now covered with flawless, beautiful snow.
Well, it would be flawless for just a minute, anyways.
A soft nudge hit her side, and she looked down with a smile gracing her maw at one of her newest children, the filly’s eyes looking up at her just like her father’s. Her tiny wings mimicked her mother’s, tight to her back to keep the warmth in her body.
“Mama, it’s cold,” she pouted, shooting looks at the white stuff, “What is it?”
A soft laugh escaped Ayelen’s lips as she began to trudge forward, out of the cover of the broad-canopied evergreens that had sheltered them the night before. “It’s snow, Aiyanna,” she began, long tail trailing the path her legs made behind her, “It’s harmless, come on.” She paused, head craning around to make sure the stubborn filly was following her. “You can walk in my steps if you don’t want to touch it, you know.”
Aiyanna glowered a moment more before leaping into the snow herself, pushing hard to make her own path alongside her mother’s. She struggled, realizing too late that where it only went up to the knees of the mare, it was much deeper on her smaller body.
“Mamaaaaa,” she whined, slim legs pushing hard against the snow. Ayelen turned around, coming close enough to join the two paths and let out the little filly from her makeshift prison.
“Come on, little one,” she soothed gently, coaxing the obstinate child along, “If we don’t hurry, we won’t make it back to everyone else on time. Don’t you want to see your older siblings? That’s where we’re going, you know; a big family reunion just for this season. Your father went and found them just for you and your brother.” Aiyanna’s face lit up and she was soon bounding behind her mother, wings splayed and questions about the rest of her family flying out of her mouth. Did they look like her? Were they winged? How long were they staying? Did they have family of their own to bring?
As Ayelen slowly crossed the plain and headed for what would be another sheltered forest, she patiently answered the exuberant filly’s questions, suppressing a laugh the best she could. No matter how tedious this child could be, she wouldn’t miss this for the world.

Amadahy checked her stock of medicines and supplies, making sure she had enough to survive the long cold winter. There wasn’t much time left until snow would cover the ground making travel from her teepee deep in the heart of the forest nearly impossible. She stepped up from the back of the tent to look out of the teepee entrance, hoping her solitary wandering friend would be by sometime soon. Kaah was a difficult one at best, but when he was out wandering she missed his company dearly. She went back to her task with a heavy heart. He had been gone a long time now. Would he ever come back?
She ran her fingers gently over the blanket she had woven for him. In deep burgundy’s and bronzes, it would match the surly stallion’s coat and would help to keep him warm and perhaps remind him of her friendship while he was away, remind him that he had a home to come back to whenever he wanted it. She only hoped he would come before Christmas.
Kaah shook his mane as his hooves sunk into the soft snow. It was cold and he was weary. He had been wandering the Kawani lands for several months now, never staying in one place for very long. He yearned for a place he could simply stay for a while to recover before setting out on another journey. He longed for company who would accept him without judgment. Who would simply be there for him.
The forest came into view, the first place he had any memories of. The place where he woke up without knowing who he was, where he was or anything about his past. He was a full grown stallion without a past, with an uncertain present and no real hope for a future of any kind. It was here he met Her. A two-legger who healed him after a fight. She was gentle and quiet. A helpful presence who was content to be there when she was needed, and to leave him alone when she wasn’t. Whenever it is needed, my teepee is yours, she had whispered in his ear before he left the last time. He did have a home to return to and it was nearby.
With lighter heart and lighter hooves he continued on. There was an end to this journey in sight. He was going home.
Amadahy started when she heard a strange sound. Well, not strange per say, but the one she had not heard in months, the familiar sound of hoofbeats coming her way. The sound of her friend, Kaah. Kaah was coming home. She rushed out of the teepee. He was standing there head held high. He was home.
Merry Christmas, indeed.
