Honestly, I'd say it went wrong right after Fr/Lg. I remember waiting for months on end with minimal sleep before each came out, with only the little info from the Japanese release and NP Miniguides.
Emerald, though, was different. we'd seen the game play, and it was exactly the same, save for the frontier, Both sets of Legendaries, and a new font.
Of course, I was right in with N's target audience, so that WOULD explain a lot.

It just doesn't fel epic to fight with level 100.
All the little ankle-biters think they're hot stuff when they bring out their precious lv 100s...
Me? I DEMAND the set levels we play with, dammit!
