{part 1}
Cressida was an obliging sort of person, so when she'd gotten the call to go down to a place she'd never been and retrieve a child she'd never asked for, she did it. She'd brought the little girl home with her, and set up straight away to making her comfortable. Cress had given up her own bedroom and was now sleeping on the ancient futon in the living room. She'd gone out for the first time in her life to the supermarket downtown, into the noise and the crowds and the overwhelming press of people, to fetch the girl meat. She'd even cooked it, after weeping over the loss of life beforehand.
Now, in the evening, washing up barely used dishes and watching the solemn little girl quietly coloring at the kitchen table, Cressida realized she rather liked having company.
"Did you like dinner?" she asked the monotone child. The girl looked up, brushing white hair out of her eyes, and nodded seriously.
"Yeah, thank'oo," she said, sounding far more mature than her young age belied.
Looking pleased, Cressida finished cleaning and joined the child at the table, looking at her drawings.
"What're you coloring?"
"Th' ossin."
It took a minute for Cress to interpret 'ossin' as 'ocean'. She nodded and smiled at the girl, patting her head in an affectionate sort of way. The child looked at her again and offered a small smile in return, then focusing intently on her crayon scrawls once more. The pair sat in comfortable silence the remainder of the night, one watching, one working.
Ah, yes. Cressida rather liked having company, indeed.
