A boat! A boat! They were goin' on a boat! Jumping up and down, his black curls quivering with every bounce, it was pretty darn evident that Lewis was excited about his first boat trip. The odd pair, one flamingo child and one Zurg, were almost at the start of the queue, already on the little metal bridge that led onto the boat. Pausing his enthusiastic jumping for a moment, Lewis curled his fingers around the rail of the loading bridge and peered into the murky water below. There was no telling what swam in that water - sharks, whales, squids, and maybe even lyoflowerdons (he had heard that big word on a show about dinosaurs!). Oooh, maybe he would see one! Or a fish. A fish is fine too.
Bug too, oddly enough, was looking forward to the boat ride, even if it was only a dinky little tour ride. If Gaia had anything on his home planet, it was their water sports. The Zurg world was generally very dry and didn't really allow for the leisurely use of water, so it was something of a treat to be able to actually ride on a boat. Of course, Gaia had nothing else on his home planet. Nothing at all. Stupid place.
The line progressively moved forward until the two were finally able to board the boat. It wasn't an overly large thing, capable of holding perhaps 75 passengers. There were plenty of seats available, even a little snack bar if you found yourself hungry during the tour, but not fancy in the slightest. The name "Top Sail Tours" was proudly branded everywhere, despite the fact that the boat didn't even have a sail and was instead powered by motors.
Ignoring the rocking motion of the boat beneath him, Lewis immediately headed for the side of the boat and climbed up onto one of the benches boarding it, looking out at the limitless horizon of the ocean. "We are fin'ly on the boat. I CAN SEE FOREVER!"

Lacy was a very austere child and it took a lot to get her excited or upset. But as she and Cressida walked down the dock and onto the boat hand in hand, the orca child was nearly ready to explode from pure, hyperactive joy.
"I WANT TO SEE THE WHOLE OCEAN AND WE'LL SEE WHALES I BET AND I LIKE WHALES SINCE I KINNA AM ONE AND LETS TAKE ONE HOME IF IT COMES UP TO THE BOAT AND AND AND-"
Cressida, looking resplendently hippie-like in loose airy clothing, hemp jewelry and Birkenstocks - not to mention green skin and hair - just nodded and smiled at her child. How sweet, that Lacy was so happy!

"Cha'lie, this is awesome," the liopleurodon child said in awe, running around the dock excitedly and simultaneously making her guardian worried she was going to fall into the water and never return. "Look, look! There's fish and stuff in the water, I can see 'em!" Though she couldn't, could she, through all the clouded water, Charlie noted with disgust. "C'mon, c'mon, le's get on th' boat, le's go, how come you're so slow, hurry up!"
Charlie would have loved to point out that it wasn't him being slow but figured it'd be hopeless. "Just don't fall or mess with anything?" That was not something he would like to have on his conscience.
Regardless, Denny ran - more so tripped, much to her guardian's dismay - up the bridge that led onto the boat. After she'd established her footing, she proudly yelled, "Ev'rybody! EV'RYBODY LOOK AT ME, 'CAUSE 'M STANDIN' ON A BOAT!"

Oooh, the water was so pretty! Lewis stared intently at it, fully expecting a whale or dolphin to just jump out of it and wave its flipper at him. Those whales and dolphins, they were awful nice. How could animals with names like Flipper and Willy not be nice? Now all he had to do was wait for one to appea-
His attention was cut short, however, by the sound of someone yelling. Turning around on his bench he spotted a girl who was a little kid like him, and who was announcing very loudly that she was on the boat. Now this was someone Lewis could understand! Being on a boat was an exciting thing! Climbing down off of the beach, going unnoticed by Bug as the Zurg continued to stare at the water himself, Lewis marched his way over to the girl before joining her. "I'M ON A BOAT TOO! TAKE A LOOK AT ME!"
Two screaming children in the middle of the boat deck wouldn't go ignored for long, but before that could happen, Lewis pointed his finger to another similarly aged, black-and-white girl that he had spotted. "SHE'S ON A BOAT!"

Lacy whirled around. Were there other kids on the boat? Holy crackers, yes there WERE.
"I AM ALSO ON TH' BOAT," she said clearly, marching over to Lewis and looking up at him. "I am here t'see whales and do'ffins and fishes."
She looked around - the adults around them didn't seem to grasp the importance of being on the boat. They were on the boat, for heaven's sake.
"EVER'ONE PAY 'TENTION TO US - WE'RE ON A BOAT."

Charlie covered his ears and, like a responsible parent, went as far away as he possibly could from all three children, muttering, "Oh, my God, what is this," under his breath several times and went to stare at birds or something.
Denny, on the other hand, was even more excited to find more boat-going children. "Hey! You guys're on a boat, too, jus' like me! We should be frien's, yeah? Boat friends! And we'll have a bunch of fun and hey, when d'you think th' boat'll start movin'--"
She paused for a minute, staring at Lacy. "HEY, WAIT, I KNOW YOU. I gave you a rock, 'member?"

It was then that Bug decided to intervene, glaring at the collective group of children from his continued position on the bench. "Lewis! Quiet down! You too," he yelled, nodding at the other two children. "You don't want the captain to maroon us, do you?!" he asked, obviously having not even the slightest idea as to what he was talking about. This was supposed to be an educational trip, but how could he learn anything with three loud-mouthed, Gaian-bred brats?
Turning to look apologetically at Bug, Lewis then held his finger to his lip while making the well-known "shhhh!" sound. "We 'ave to be quiet, or the cap'n will maroon us'ins!" He had no idea what that meant, but it didn't sound very nice at all. "But yes, WE CAN BE FRIENDS," he said, completely abandoning his previous statement with the excited squeal. "We can be friends with all of da whales and dol'ffins and fishes too!" This boat trip was turning out to be way more awesome than ever imagined.
The two of them were already friends! And Lewis was their friend too now, yay! "Ooh, a rock? Do you haves it? I wanna see!" He grinned at the black-and-white girl, waiting for her to magically summon the rock so she could show it to him. Maybe the other girl would give him a rock too!

Staring in shock for a minute, Lacy gave a delighted squeal and threw her arms about Denny's neck.
"Hallo hallo hallo!" she said, beaming. "I remember you!"
Head snapping in Lewis's direction at the question, Lacy looked suddenly distressed that she had nothing to share with him.
"I don't," she said plaintively. "I planted it in Mumma's garden so it'd grow into a mountain, and I water it every day but it's still a baby."

Deniz pouted and stuck her tongue out at the strange adult who decided to ruin their collective screaming: he was stupid, anyway, because he clearly did not appreciate being on a boat as much as they did. It was a momentous occasion!
She smiled at Lacy, giving the girl a hug. "Maybe th' rock jus' wants ta take a while to grow, but it'll be big 'n' strong soon! I know it."
Taking another glance at Lewis, Denny thought for a moment, a contemplative look on her face as she dug around in her pockets. She pulled out a bent lollipop stick and held it out to him, saying, "Here. I didn' eat the lolli, if tha's what you're thinkin', I dropped it and it fell off, but I have this thing, if y' want it."

"Awww," he said in response to the lack of rock showingness. But it if was growing to be a mountain, then that was alright! "Thas okay, though, I'll jus' see it when it's a mountain!" Maybe he could even get a baby rock from her mountain, and grow his very own! Except he wasn't sure if his house had enough room for a mountain. Oh well, he would never know until he tried.
As Deniz gave him the lollipop stick, Lewis's face transformed into a smiling thing. The small wings on his back fluttered with excitement, and hopped from foot to foot, clutching his new gift. "Thank you, thank you! I can put it in my room and I will always be able to see it there!" Looking back at Bug, he waved the stick at him, yelling across the boat: "LOOKIT AT THIS! IT'S MAH NEW STICK! ...UH. DIS GIRL GAVE IT TO ME." He didn't even know the name of the gift giver! Hmm. "Wot's your name? Mine's Lewis!"
And now he needed something to give them! Digging into his own pockets, he was only able to find one thing - a plastic bottle cap. "This can be yours," he said, handing the bottle cap to Lacy. But he didn't know what to give the other girl! It was then that he noticed a small, downy grey feather below him on the deck of the boat, obviously coming from his very own wings. "This! Is a fetha!" He handed it to Deniz after picking it up, and then wrung his hands in nervousness. What if they didn't like his gifts?

Lacy held the bottle cap to her chest like it was a diamond sneezed out by a unicorn made of rainbows. And ice cream.
"I like you," she said firmly to Lewis. "You and Denny are my special boat friends for today."
The moment she finished speaking, a deep rumbling could be heard from the bowels of the boat. Lacy at first thought the boat was having a tummy ache, but then she realized that the vessel was sluggishly moving forward. Oh my god. OH my god. OhmigodohmigodohmiGODTHEYWEREMOVINGFINALLY.

"'m Deniz, but you can call me Denny," the girl said proudly, glad to be able to attribute to the happiness on her new friend's face. "Lewis! Tha's a cool name," it really was! She'd never met anyone with that name before, granted she hadn't met a lot of people to begin with, but that didn't make it any less cool.
And, oh, they were getting gifts, too? Denny took an admiring look at the bottle cap that the boy gave Lacy before looking back at him, anticipating what her gift would be. Would she get a bottle cap, too? It did look pretty nice, but maybe he didn't have another one. As long as hers was just as good - she blinked, seeing the feather presented to her, and grinned, sticking it in her hair. "Gee, thanks! I always wanted a featha," she chirped, "and maybe it'll grow into wings and I can fly t' see Lacy's mountain and have an adventure and," she paused.
"HEY, OUR BOAT'S MOVIN'," Deniz screamed and ran around the deck excitedly. They were moving! They were finally moving!
