User Image"Yeah, I would like that." Penelope smiled, more than she had in a while. "Be careful on your way home." Penelope noticed the psionics book Cait had left on top of her bookcase. "Don't forget that book you liked. You can get it back to me whenever we hang out again."

User Image"Oh, Right, Thanks!!" Cait smiled too, taking the book, though she had to admit Penelope had a surprisingly amazing smile... The idea that she was emo and into gothic culture was totally wrong, Penelope was much cooler than that. Cait hung up the phone with her mom and went to leave. At the door, she turned to make a final good bye to Penelope. Not bothering to care if Penelope was a huggy person or not, Cait wrapped her arms around Penelope. "Thank you again... We couldn't have made it without you. I'll see you at school on Monday."

User Image"Uh... Bye?" Penelope hadn't thought she could get any redder, but there it was. As Cait walked down the street, Penelope stepped back into the house feeling more than slightly bewildered. "That was... new..."

"You'd think you'd never been hugged before." Penelope's mom tried to laugh, but failed. Penelope gave her a look and she shook her head. "It's okay, dear, I understand. I'm taking Elizabeth's friends home, but I'll be back soon."

User ImageT'was the night before Prom, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring... Except for Penelope. She was wide awake in a fit of insomnia created by equal parts excitement and fear. Prom was finally coming! Her mom had surprised her with an appointment at Clover's Cuts and Josh had, despite a last minute no-rental crisis, secured a tux. Everything was falling into place. Penelope even had a fantastic dress lined up for the night.

From somewhere in the house, Penelope heard a clock chime twelve. She wanted to go to bed, but she just couldn't. The prospect of such a fantastic night was almost too much for her to take. Plus, she'd be spending it with Josh...

"Penelope..." A low, hissing voice sent the young girl hurtling towards the ceiling. She searched the room from her bed, unwilling to venture from her mattress. Just when she'd decided it was the wind, she heard it again. "Penelope..."

"Elizabeth?" She tried, daring to step off her bed. "Elizabeth, if this is your idea of a joke, I will kill you."

"Penelope," The voice was strong, androgynous, and definitely not her sister. "Come."

Despite herself, Penelope climbed out of bed. Curiosity got the better of her fear and she softly padded out into the hallway. What she saw nearly sent her scrambling back into her room.

The attic was open.

"Come." The voice was much more commanding than before, causing Penelope to shakily make her way up the ladder and into the forbidden area. There was a shocking amount of dust and it was very dark, despite the moonlight streaming in from the window. Penelope reached out for a cord she assumed lead to a light, but pulled her hand back when suddenly the air got very, very cold. Petrified, Penelope was considering just jumping back downstairs, when she saw the dress.

User ImageThe moonlight through the window illuminated a mannequin wrapped in a black material that seemed to flow like a moonless night. Unlike the rest of the attic, it hadn't gathered any dust. Once again, Penelope's curiosity took the helm and she walked deeper into the space than she dared to get a look at this strange and beautiful garment. She wondered what sort of material had those purple highlights running through it.

The moment she reached out her hand to touch it, dress leapt from the stand and wrapped itself around her. At first she was shocked, but soon the feel of it drowned out her fears. It was tight, Penelope could guess what it was doing for her meager curves, yet she found herself able to move unobstructed. It was like the dress stretched and shrank to allow her to walk.

"I have to wear this dress to Prom," She whispered to darkened attic. Suddenly, the dress flowed off her and into her arms, ready to be smuggled away. Without another thought, Penelope raced back to her room to hide the dress. When she returned to the hall to close the attic entrance, she found it already closed. She returned to her bed and slept like a log through the night.

One week rarely made a difference at 13 Grizzly End. The vines grew a little more on the walls, the grass claimed a little more of the porch, and maybe the foundation leaned another centimeter to the right. Inside, the changes were even less. The chairs in the den might get a little more slumped and the carpet a little more bare. A plate might crack or a bit of food fall to the floor. An average week left the Greenhill home all but untouched.

This past week had been anything but average. So far, the changes included no few than five broken glasses, six broken plates, and one large scorch mark in the den that was barely concealed by a crooked love seat. And these were only the changes that her mother had seen. Penelope's own room had three more scorch marks, a window that was determinedly coated in a film of frost, and a mirror that constantly reflected storm clouds.

Penelope sat in the middle of this madness, her eyes flitting between the pages of a book she shouldn't have and the strange but beautiful dress she had managed to keep hidden from her mother. After a few minutes, she stood and pointed two fingers at her desk lamp.

"Yort-Ed" She exclaimed.

The house suddenly shook, breaking two more glasses, a vase, and knocking open the hatch to the attic.
