Sadly... I would probably contact Scholastic and K. A. Applegate to try and see if I could do a crossover with Animorphs. I probably wouldn't use any of the main characters, but I would definitely want to use some of the aliens.

For those of you who've read Animorphs -- imagine the Doctor encountering the Ellimist and/or Crayak. biggrin

I'd love to do a story with the original cybermen. I'd get David Banks back to play the Cyberleader. Because he was so insanely awesome.
And the ninja teleporting robot thing! : D That was the best thing about The Five Doctors. But unfortunately they seem to be indigenous to Gallifrey, don't they?

Well, I don't think it was explicitely mentioned in the episode that they are from Gallifrey. Or was it? Need to see that episode again. Anyway I'd like to see a story involving a group of time-travelling mercenaries who are after the Doctor for some reason (possibly to do with that "dark past" of his they were hinting at before the classic series was cancelled), and have picked up along the way one of those kick-a** robots to do their work for them. (Turns out their leader used to travel back in time to take part in, and change the outcome of, historic battles, and is therefore responsible for the way history turned out.) Sounds like yet another fanfic I'll be writing sometime in the near future.

It's not stated absolutely explicitly, but I seem to recall that they're called 'Rassilon Robots'. Rassilon being, of course, Gallifreyan.

You're nearly right. They were called Raston Robots, and according to DWM's 100 Greatest Deaths article, some of them got wiped out in quite nasty ways!

Richard, can you fill us in any more on this?

Srsly? I could have sworn they were called Rassilon robots. *looks it up* You're right. But apparently they're thought to have been made by Rassilon.
And also, Wikipedia says there's plans to bring them back! : D : D : D

Actually, wasn't it the Cybermen that got wiped out, with the Raston robot doing much of the a**-kicking?

If I remember correctly, Terrance Dicks said the reason why the Cybermen got killed all over the place in The Five Doctors was because script editor Eric Saward kept insisting that they be put in. It's kind of funny watching Saward's beloved Cybermen getting massacred in the most stupid ways possible. Then again, the lone Dalek in the story was taken care of by a shove from an old man and his somewhat aged granddaughter...

As always, I can't do you any 'useful facts' but I can do you some 'quite interesting trivia.'

Since the Raston Warrior Robots were a last minute "Argh! We need something cheap to fill some time with!" addition to the script, the costume is just one of the android suits from Earthshock sprayed silver.

There's nothing in the episode or the novelisation that says where they're from, and (apart from the fact that 'Raston' sounds a bit like 'Rassilon' if your diction is as poor as Jon Pertwee's) there's nothing to suggest they're native to Gallifrey as opposed to being time scooped victims of the Death Zone like everyone else in the Game.

The EDA The Eight Doctors suggests the Raston Warrior Robots were relics of a mysterious and ooky Lost Civilisation of mysterious and ooky Ancients. The later EDA Alien Bodies reveals this is marketing spin put about by thier real manufacturers , the Raston Hardware Company, an operation based on Tersurus Luna who also produce the Raston Cybernetic Lap-Dancer.

If they were originally made by Rassilon, that wouldn't necessarily mean that they were all restricted to Gallifrey. Maybe some of them were designed to do battle on other planets that weren't wiped out in that Time -War we keep hearing about.
Bring them back? That'd be pretty cool. The Daleks have kind of been overused in the new series, so I'd like to see a new "ultimate enemy" for the Doctor to fight. If one of them could take out an entire taskforce of Cybermen, I'd like to see even the Doctor save the human race or whatever from an entire army of those things...

@Richard - It sounded a lot like Rassilon to me. I'd watch it again, but I only had it rented from Amazon, so it's gone now. I guess I just assumed they were native guards because I heard 'Rassilon'.
I didn't know that about the Earthshock androids... those guys are cool.

@RogueModron - The cybermen are just generally ridiculous in The Five Doctors. Nothing they do does any good at all, and they get massacred at least twice.

@Travis III - It's nice to see that I'm not the only person who thinks the Daleks are being overused. I think they should put them away for a while, do something else, then bring them back in a few years in a really OMG awesome return-of-the-Daleks-just-when-you-thought-they-were-gone-forever-type story.
It worked with the cybermen in Earthshock.

But with an army of them, whatever way he found to kill them would have to be rather contrived, or seem much too easy, or both. It'd be like... you familiar with the last season of Buffy? You have the uber-vampires, and when there's just one of them, it's incredibly hard to kill because it doesn't die when you stake them. But when there's an army of them, they dust like normal vampires, and it's just silly. /Buffy references.

...though the actor inside wasn't as the crew attacked his crotch with hairdryers to try and get the silver paint to dry in time for filming!

I agree the way Pertwee delivers the word 'Raston' does sound a lot like 'Rassilon', but it really honestly isn't.

There's nothing in the story to connect the robot with Rassilon (other than the fact that there's one in the Death Zone... by which logic Rassilon also built the Yeti) and Terrance Dicks , who wrote both The Five Doctors and its novelisation, also wrote the novels World Game and The Eight Doctors which feature Raston Warrior Robots and give them an origin unconnected to Rassilon.

There's nothing in any licensed source anywhere to say that Rassilon built them, designed them, sprayed them silver or even held one of the hairdryers. Honest.

See what you mean. And I suppose that's the main reason I feel that the Daleks are overused. Which lead me to watching a few episodes again and make the following ramblings...er, observations.

Series 1-Rose kills the entire Dalek fleet because she looked into the heart of the TARDIS! *gasps* (what an idiotic plot device!) whereas in "Dalek", titular monster was so damn intimidating because one of them wiped out several hundred trained soldiers without breaking a sweat. It was around the former point (which actually came second) that I felt the Daleks lost their credibility as any threat to the Doctor.

Series 2- The Daleks are back! But this time, all they do is destroy the Cybermens' credibility, before getting themselves sucked into a void that the Eternals (they mean the ones from Enlightenment, don't they?) call "The Howling" for some reason. Meh.

Series 3- Unlike many I actually rather enjoyed "Daleks in Manhattan"/"Evolution of the Daleks", but the Daleks are poorly utilised in this. Judging from Raynor's "Torchwood" episodes (which are good), she should probably stick to character-based stories lacking any real antagonists.

I seem to have strayed from the point a bit, haven't I? Maybe a singular Raston Warrior Robot would work better than an army in that script I will almost certainly never be asked to write. *sighs*

The Animorphs was the first scifi series that I really loved/fangirled about! The Andalites, the Yeerks, the Hork Bajir... It would be so awesome for the Doctor to meet the Andalites because they are just as stuck up about their morphing technology as the Timelords are about ... everything. I wonder what would happen if someone tried to morph the Doctor? XD And an Ellimist or Crayak encounter definitely would fit Doctor Who.

A single one would be good. i think that's why Dalek works so well - it's just like 'whoa, one Dalek can do that much damage?'. And that's why the Raston robot worked so well.

@Kay_Challis - Oh, I don't doubt it. But when I get something wrong, I get embarrassed and keep trying to justify it. 'Oh, well I thought that because *insert flimsy reason here*, so it's understandable, right? Right?!'
PostPosted: Thu May 22, 2008 2:46 pm

Oh...fair enough then, after all it is totally understandable.
It's all Uncle Terry's fault really for going with the word 'Raston'. If he'd called them 'Toojafloop Warrior Robots' or something we'd never have this trouble.

I would do something set entirely inside the TARDIS. There would be no real monsters, or aliens, or anything. It would mostly be character development. I know I would bring back Rose, because she's my favourite companion, and I think she has a lot of potential for inner discovery and development. She an Donna would make an interesting pair too. Maybe I'd even bring back Jack, because I think he must have a lot of good backstory.

It would be dialogue heavy, with maybe some flash backs, to Gallifrey, to Rose's life in the parallel universe, to adventures that the Doctor has had with both Rose and Donna, I don't know.

I also don't know why they're trapped in the TARDIS, but it would give us a chance to see the other rooms.

I think there was a First Doctor serial that was a little like that. But I'm not sure what it was about.

There may have been. I lose all of the running, don't get me wrong, but I loved that bit in The Sound of Drums Were the Doctor just sort of talked about Gallifrey and the one Torchwood episode with the collapsed building that showed how every one of the team members came to work for Torchwood.

I <3 character development and backstory.
