1st: I like fighting
2nd: Its good for you your health
3rd: specifically for capoeira, its an African-American martial art
4th: It is really enjoyable, either against someone or just training.
... Well those are my reasons.

depends on what ya mean by fight.
I hate sparring. too many rules and restrictions.
A straight up MMA match has hardly any restrictions, so you can let yourself completely go all out. Even if you lose, the feeling you have in the end is great as long you leave everything on the mat or in the ring.

I don't fight competitively that much, but on the occasions that I do its because its fun and it helps me with my self defense training.

the thrill when you're in that ring and the people shouting for your victory. Pretty awesome.

I'm into martial arts for the health benefits, agility, flexibility, self-discipline. Fighting is way down on my list.

Well, depends on what you consider fighting. I don't fight in any kind of ring. My school doesn't do competitions and I don't like them anyway. I think it kind of demeans what I like best about martial arts. But I have a rival I spar with a lot outside of class. It's never in a set fight, but it's more just playing around with the art. We're told that in order to get better at your karate, to become really good, you should play around with what they teach you. So we go to the front yard and practice our kicks and punches and stuff on each other, avoiding breaking anything or drawing too much blood. It gives you an idea of what it's like to face an opponent. It gets your adrenaline pumping and forces you to face the idea that you could get hurt. To overcome that in an easier setting so that when you're faced with a self-defense situation, you're better able to stand up to fight against danger rather than pull away from it.

before i got into martial arts i fought quite a good bit. I was always that short guy who everyone tried to push around and tease. one day it progressed beyond teasing. i came home beat up one day because id been afraid of what my father would say if i got into a fight and, instead of what i was expecting, my dad said that if he ever found out that i didnt fight back in one of those situations, hed kick my a** again once i got home. so I learned. i learned that no matter how big someone is they cannot defeat what they cannot catch. I learned that when a smaller person is surrounded by larger people using any means to win is acceptable. I learned later in my life the simple fact that in a fight for survival there can be no honor if you are truly desperate and are struggling to stay alive. all thought fades away in front of that cold rage, and yes, fear that comes in or before any serious fight. the urge to survive overwhelms everything.
My fighting philosophy is now, and has always been, to fight for the sake of the ones i love. To protect. i can take alot of crap on myself but as soon as those i care for are hurt i tear apart those who hurt them or destroy myself trying. I fight to enforce my ideals as well. if i see something i perceive to be wrong, i try to correct it as best i can, simple as that.
