From the Diray of Elda Chan. . .

Dated: 1/13/2008

Dear Diary,

Dear God, where to start. . .

I suppose it would be best to start at the beginning, but the beginning was quite a while back; Halloween to be exact.

I have always been fascinated with the Eden Project. Ever since I discovered the shop, and met the wonderful children and their guardians I had dreams of someday becoming part of that community; of being allowed to care for one of these wonderful, special, children. But how was I supposed to know how terrifying it was going to be?

I had never met Mort or Ruka before. I knew who Mort was, an Eden with the soul of a Pumpkin. I’d even seen his picture in the photo showcase at the Project’s home. But I’d never met him.

So when word reached me that the Project was looking for a new home for Mort, I got my name on the list post-haste. I thought I would be a good mother to the child, according to his paperwork we had several things in common, especially our taste in music.

However, I believed that I had no chance to being named caretaker. I figured that job would go to someone more experienced; someone who spent more time with the Eden’s than I did, but I filled out and submitted the paperwork anyway.

You can only imagine my surprised when I revived the call from the Project that Halloween morning. They wanted to know if I would be willing to take over guardianship of Mort, no other questions asked. I was stunned, shocked even, and more than a little scared.

A representative from the Project brought Mort to the house latter that afternoon. He went trick-or-treating with Fai and me Halloween night dressed as John Lennon~! Fai accepted him into the family quickly with question, and they have become close friends.

Mort had since become a very special part of my home and I really don’t know what I would do without him any longer. I have plans to take him to the Project HQ in the near future because it has come my attention they he hasn’t had much interaction with the other Eden’s except through his cousin Teigen.

I pray that Mort likes living with Fai and I, and hope dearly that we are providing him with the family life he so richly deserves!

From the Diary of Elda Chan. . .

Dated: 4/11/2008

Dear Diary,

Mort’s really come a long way in such a short amount of time!

I’m very impressed with my boy so far. He’d really rather spend all his time cooped up with his Ipod and records—he saved his allowance for a long time so I helped him buy an old record player. But he’ll venture out now with only minimal complaining.

I’m glad that he’s become interested in making friends, especially with other Edens. I know I’ve expressed concerns in the past about exposing him to his own kind as well as “normal” children.

I just feel the Edens have a connection somehow, be it for good or bad.

But I digress. . .

Mort’s expanded his taste in music only minimally. He discovered my Greatest Hits of the 70s CD collection as well as the Top 20 Songs of the 80s.
His favorite bands now include; ACDC, Blondie, Duran Duran, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses, KISS, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Queen, Simon & Garfunkle, Toto, Van Halen, and ZZ Top.

But the Beatles are still his favorite! He’s learning more about rock history which I feel is a good thing for him to know. He even wants to go to New York on Earth to see the John Lennon Imagine memorial!

I’m hoping maybe he’ll expand his listening options even more in the future, but for now all I ask is that he keeps his headphones on.

A letter and a strange shaped package have arrived for Mort! Upon opening, the package contains a shiny red electric guitar, and the letter is from Shouko!
The Letter
Hi, Mort!

I don't know if you remember me, but it's Shouko from the project! I heard you really like music, so why don't you play some of your own? I bought the guitar especially for you because I thought you might enjoy learning to play it. So what are you waiting for? Let those fingers fly!

Stop by sometime once you've got the hang of it! I'd love to hear you play!

-Shouko

Growth quest! Mort needs to learn the basics of the guitar and how to play a song of his choice! When he's done, he needs to perform it for his family! This quest should be between 2 and 6 posts of around 400 words each. Notify Silverah when you're finished!

Growth Part 1 [Presents? But it's not Christmas!]

“Mort! Moooort! Are you listening to me! Take those headphones off so you can hear me.” Elda cringed, she sounded just like her mother had when she was growing up. Shrugging the unpleasant though from her mind she re-focused on her boy, who was sitting cross-legged on his bed, glaring at his mother.

“Ma’am.” He said, showing her the ipod was paused and she had his full attention, but certainly not happy about it. Elda shuffled her feet; this was not the way to start out any conversation.

“There’s a package for you.” She told him, and his face lit up.

“A present!” He exclaimed, his face lighting up, he hopped off the bed. “But it’s not even Christmas.” Elda shrugged, and followed the bouncing boy down the hall into the kitchen, where a long slim package wrapped in blue paper sat on the table.

“Read the card first.” Elda reminded him gently, as he plucked the card off the front of the gift.

“It’s a guitar!” He exclaimed, reading the note. “Can I open it now?” Elda nodded and he tore into the paper in a flash. Moments latter a shiny red electric guitar was lying in a heap of paper on the table. Mort lifted it reverently off the tabletop, and fit the strap over his shoulder. Under it sat a level one beginner’s guitar book. Mort’s entire face was taken up by his grim.

“It’s perfect!” He said, running his fingers over the taunt strings. He plucked a string, and was rewarded with the most annoying and ghastly sound ever produced by a guitar. Elda cringed.

“I think it needs tuning.” She told him, and his smile faltered a tiny bit.

“I don’t know how to tune a guitar.” He said slowly. “I think it has to be really hard, right?” Elda shrugged.

“I don’t know how to either.” A large smile spread across her face. “But. . .” She said reaching into her pocket. “I have another gift here for you, this one’s from myself.” She pulled out a postage-sized envelope and handed to the orange-haired boy. He opened it and extracted a large rectangle made of stiff paper; his eyes widened.

“Guitar lessons! Yessssss!” The pumpkin boy grinned broadly and his mother smiled back.

“I’m glad you’re excited. I didn’t think it would be a good idea to get you a guitar you couldn’t play, right?”

“Thanks mom! This is the best not-Christmas presents EVER!” With this dramatic statement the boy flung himself into Elda’s arms and hugged her deeply. Smiling goofily, Elda patted his head and held her boy.
