For me the problem is, that I am very picky if it comes to roleplays. That means I don't care much about plot, writing style and stuff like that. I mean...what I am picky about is everything related to the world and gaming style. If I see the word ''Class'', I press the ''Back'' button, if I see words like ''no magic'' or ''humans and vamps only'' or a long, political story I also press the ''Back'' button. My mind is right now screaming to me, that I have to get a good roleplay to play in, but I am afraid because I am not from england and it's difficult for me to express my thoughts in foreign language so I still keep a low profile and play in slightly n00bish roleplays (except the ''Dream machine'' ofcourse. That's a great and (in my opinion) original idea).
My problem is, that I have something against bending my characters to fit a roleplay. The more there is story and facts in the world the bigger is the chance that my character doesn't fit there. I also dislike making a new character for a story with ''special'' plot, for some reason.
Anyway right now I've noticed that on most roleplays with a good plot the most important information is in the bottom. I think that even simple things like putting available races and a few-sentence long world description in the top of the first post would help, because then a person who clicks on the topic will immediately see, if the roleplay suits him or her without looking through long blocks of text at first.

I think that a lot of people do read or notice the intermediate or advanced RPs, but they are intimidated thinking that they will not be accepted or they are simply uninspired by that particular RP to create a new character or modify an old one. That's why GMs for intermediate and advanced need to do more recruiting, because fewer people "match" their RP. If the RP does not inspire you or it intimidates you, then you will not be motivated to go through all the hard work of (re)making a character that might be rejected. That's why I like to give people the chance to modify their profile, rather than just reject them outright, if they are of an appropriate level for the RP. As far as being uninspired, that is why I agree that it is important to put a sort of summary/introduction thing in the first post that gives potential players a good idea of the feel of your RP. I think that a lot of people do have strict preferences, such as they prefer an RP without any magic at all, and they should know in the first paragraph whether or not your RP will meet such basic prerequisites. But as a player, sometimes even when an RP meets these prerequisites and hooks me enough to keep reading, it just doesn't inspire me to the point of actual character (re)creation. So the fact is that you can have a perfectly good RP that is set up well, and it will still die or never even begin if you do not find enough people that are inspired by it, players that really "match up." Beginners RPs tend to have wider audiences (within their level) and so find people more readily. However, you may notice that in many of these RPs you will still see people dropping like flies. The difference? New flies. 3nodding

A lot of people these days aren't willing, or are unable to put the time and effort required to conduct a literate RP so they don't bother learning how and are stuck in the bars, the inns, and the various school RPs that are out there. I created an RP about a month ago, Rollington Academy for Mobile Suite pilots, and so far I have not received a single profile to join. Taking into consideration that most bar RPs have people the next day I find that while the quantity of Rps out there go up, the quality go down dramatically. Few people are dedicated enough to try the higher level RPs and are therefore unable to get past using asterisks and first person for their RP. Not to mention the lack of creativity in characters. It took me six months to create a character I like and I'm still making changes as I RP. Long story short, most people today are unwilling to put serious effort into their RPs. To those of you who are semi-lit or higher keep it up.

Here is my response to this thread:

All I know is most RPs I've looked at I lose interest because it's been overdone already. And the ones I've attempted to join, which I found pretty interesting, died.

RPs lacking in plot and depth really turn me away. I've even seen RPs with one post starters, where the one post only has a sentence or two about the RP itself.

[pun]You know, a funny thing happened on the way to this forum.....[/pun]

Back to business though. I agree completely. But I agree with the previous statemnt. Most things are over done. This is also due to a lack of creativity, a lack of time, a lack of effort, and an over dose of TV. It's "packaged creativity". But seriously, I am glad to be one of the few who twists RPs into a good plot. ^_^
