Evelyn paused, her eyes telling elaborate tales of uncertainty.
The color rose to her cheeks as quickly as a waterfall cascading down a rocky slope. The mare had never been one to speak of her own beauty, nor that of others. Even toying with the idea of gushing praises about her own beauty, or even that of darling Bliss, was enough to make her uncomfortable.
What should she say?
For once, words escaped her.
Below is a time in which words did not fail to come to Evelyn's lips. It is her response for the "Miss and Mister Soquili" contest. Quote: If entering "Miss and Mister Soquili contest", one soquili "parent" must answer the following questions: (Answered by Evelyn)
- What do you find the most pleasing in your mate?
The mare stares off into the distance, her normally luminous eyes clouded by thought. "I suppose..." the barest hint of a smile touched upon her face, her eyes regaining some of their usual effervescent glow "... He contradicts himself with no knowledge of doing so. He is masculine, yet so childish... it is almost hard to believe that one so charming could be so utter clueless." She laughs, the sound carrying to the high heavens. "I remember when we first met... he galloped off into the pouring rain, chasing after a glimmer of purple in the distance! That purple was my necklace... his eyesight! How can he see so much and yet be so blind to the workings of the world?"
- If you had foals, how would you raise them? What would you teach them as being the most important lesson in life?
"Everyone changes the world they live in, whether it be for good or bad. That is our purpose. We live to change the world, to see if we can make it better based upon our own standards, whatever those may be. For 'goodness' is relative to the one who perceives it, and cannot be the same for all creatures. We touch the lives of those around us, bringing smiles of joy and sorrow. Some pass through their lives with no love to brighten it, and when they die their heart is barren and the memory of them lost for there is no-one left alive to remember it... that is the worst fate of all. Bliss and I would show our foals how to keep their coats clean, how to notice when an apple is rotten or grass has been befouled, how to find their way home when they have lost... but in the end, their lives are up to them to live. Their choices are for them to make. What they change in this world is theirs to change. We cannot control them forever, nor should we try.. I just want our foals to be happy."

Her face becomes somewhat blank, her eyes dull, as though chasing after a thought that escapes her. "Is our own happiness not enough?

He's been though so much and had so much pain dropped on his shoulders and still he has room to care even more. That should count for more than outward beauty as far as i'm concerned. If you've ever spoken to him you'll understand where i'm coming from. All he has to do is say a few things and that beauty just pours from him and it's enough to bring tears to your eyes, or at least mine but that's another story.

I'm a b*****d, darling, so looking good is about the only thing I have going for me. I'm going to be damn good at it, and with such a beautiful mare at my side, how can I not try?

Beauty is only skin deep. What my mate and I have goes deeper to where we have connected on a different level than those that find looks to be important. I've also taught this to my two girls that I brought into this world. But I feel that all of us are winners. While I may not be quite as smokin' as my partner (ha ha, did you see that? ANOTHER JOKE!), I like to think of myself as not a bad looking fellow, and Aita agrees to that, that is, when she's not trying to bum a meal off of my thigh or shoulder. We may not have been the most perfect match to begin with (I like to refer to it as love at first bite), but things certainly have worked out for the better since then, and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for my sweetheart. heart
