"How long have you known about them?" Clarence asked, not unkind. "And you've mentioned you didn't have a trainer. Did you train by yourself?"

Debbie looked worriedly to Jay, but didn't speak, holding back her concern. She turned back to the stove and continued to cut and slice more apples, to have something to do.

Clarence' attention kept focused on Jay.

"I first started breaking things four or five years ago," Jay said, "I don't train. I just try to maintain control." He kept the answers short and simple. He put his hands on his knees and forced himself to keep a calm state of mind. He really wished Clarence would stop prying, but he also knew there was nothing he could do about it. It was in situations like this that he lost control.

Deb had come up behind him and placed a soothing hand on his shoulder. "It's alright now, dear. We will not judge you," she smiled kindly at him.

Clarence looked a bit apologetic, both to Jay and Deb. "Do your parents know? Are they supportive of you?"

"No." He looked down. He really didn't feel much better. Deb was trying make him feel better, but it wasn't much help. "They don't know." Jay looked back up at Clarence. He was desperate to change the subject. "What do you want with me?" He was tired of sitting back and answering questions. He wanted the man to get to the point. He had to have wanted something.

"You poor boy!" Deb exclaimed. "You've kept such a secret all to yourselves the past few years? Oh-- but we'll help you now, won't we Clarence? You won't be alone anymore!" And she promptly hugged Jay.

Clarence nodded his agreement. "That's right. I-- We want to help you get a good grasp on your powers so that accidents like the one before won't happen anymore and you will be safe from people such as Miles. It might just be him now, but next time, you won't be so lucky, and there'll be a mob waiting for you, carrying collars and guns and--" he looked grim now, even as Deb interrupted him.

"Clarence! Stop that! You're scaring him! It's not that bad!" Deb looked upset and probably more frigthened than Jay did.

"He has to know what this world is like, Deborah," Clarence spoke seriously, still grim. "Because if he doesn't, he could end up like--" he broke off and sighed.

Deb had paled a bit. "We just want to help you," she told Jay. "Please let us help you..." she looked pleadingly at him.

Jay looked away and thought about what Clarence said. It seemed likely scenario. It did scare him, but not enough to distract him. He looked at them. Deb seemed very concerned and Clarence did too. "I thank you for your kindness, but there must be something else." He looked at Clarence straight in the eyes. "People just don't pay for property damage that was someone elses fault." Jay crossed his arms. "How do you expect me to pay you back? What is it that you want me to do?"

Clarence met Jay's gaze. His eyes showed nothing but sincerity. "There is nothing you have to do, except let me train you and help you. Once you've got a good control, you're free to go where you please. As for the money..." he smiled now. "I know a few people that have emergency funds for these kind of situations. Evolveds that have managed to work themselves to the top and remember what their youth was like. No support, no understanding. Just persecution. They want to do something back and give out some of the help that they should have received when younger. They helped me when I had problems with my control and now I'm returning the favour. I really, truly want to help you. No strings attached." He was still looking into Jay's eyes, absolutely sincere with some concern mingled in.

Deb bit her lip and stared, deeply concerned, at Jay. For some reason, she was really concerned about this particular boy. "Honestly... please listen to Clarence. I don't want to see you hurt..."

Jay watched and was rather surprised. The two sounded very sincere. He still had his doubts, but it seemed like a good deal to him. "Fine..." Jay spoke calmly. He seemed somewhat apathetic. "On one condition. My family can not know anything about this. " He gave them both a very serious look. "I want this part of my life to stay secret. I'm only doing this so I can lead a normal life." Jay sat back in his chair and sighed, "Thats all I want."

Clarence nodded in agreement. "Of course. No question about it."

"Oh, you poor dear! Well, you can confide in us, if you need to. We'll help you with everything you need!" Deb exclaimed.

Clarence nodded in agreement and smiled at Jay. "I think this has been rather an eventful day for you. Why don't you go home and get some rest? Shall we meet again at...lets say... three days from now?"

"Great," said Jay who was anxious to leave, "See you then." Jay wasted no time moving towards the door.

Jay was pleased to get out of the house. He moved quickly. He wanted to get home as soon as he could. He just wanted to go to bed and sleep. It had been a long day. A day he would like to do nothing, but forget about. Jay sighed. He couldn't think of a worse day in his life. Even the day he recognized his powers for what they were didn't compare to how bad this day was.

The past few days were normal for Jay. He got into fights with his parents, ran off, and came back for dinner. Finally came the day when he had to return to Clarence's house. He considering not going. He considered never going back there again, but decided against it. If Clarence ever found out where he lived and came to him then there would be much more trouble. Jay walked up and rang the doorbell. He was hoping no one would answer.

It was Deb that answered the door and she smiled at him. "Oh, hello dear! How have you been? Did your parents treat you well? Come in, come in! Have something to drink and eat!" She ushered Jay into a cosy living room with a lot of homely touches. Quite a few family pictures were also visible. Most of them featuring Debbie and Clarence. Several pictures also had one of the couple and a child in them. There were diferent children in a lot of pictures, but one boy in particular came back a lot.

"Come, sit!" Deb pretty much pushed Jay into a comfortable plush chair and already hurried off to get him something to drink and eat. "Clarence'll be here soon!" she called from the kitchen. "How have you been?"

Jay smiled meekly as Deb lead him in. Jay sat comfortably on the chair and examined the pictureds around him. It seemed as though Clarence and Deb have done this thing a lot. He looked at all the various kids and noticed the one boy that kept coming back. Jay wondered about him. They must have really been close.

"I've been well. How about you?" Jay answered for the sake of being polite. Deb had always been kind to him so hedidn't want to offend her.

((*snicker* So cool how you let him see what I descriiiiibe. <3 ))

"Oh, just fine, dear! I've baked more pies. Do you like pie? I've made apple and cherry, pear and a banana cake." She laughed, "I guess I was quite excited you had accepted our help."

She hurried back in, a tray with a glass of juice on it and loaded with small dishes with slices of cake, sweets and other snacks. "Here you go, dear." Deb smiled and put down the tray. She then chuckled. "Oh my, I just realised I don't even know your name! What is your name?"

((I figured they were there for a reason...))

"Pie is just fine, thank you" Jay said as he still examined the homely room around him.

"Thank you," Jay said again as Deb returned from the kitchen with some things to eat. He started to eat some of the food of the tray. He was in the middle of a bite when she asked his name. He swallowed quickly and answered her with a cough, "It's J-Jay."
