E N V I O U S x E N V Y
I'm going to cry if they do put it on a channel like that, because that means it'll be edited to death, and it'll end up being the next InuYasha, where all the kiddies are talking about it with their friends and ruining it for the older fans...
...;_;
If I had a nickel for every time I heard this type of comment, I'd have one heck of an anime/manga collection.
Anime on TV has come a long way. Look at
Naruto; it's on Toonami with a PG rating and very minimal edits. Other than 4Kids licenses (and they don't license much in the way of anime at all now), the licensors and stations know you want no edits, and most of the time they'll go for no edits. If they need to edit, it'll be minimal and there will be uncut DVDs. Adult Swim does even less in the way of editing. In fact, for the final episode of
Fullmetal Alchemist, they put a second warning saying the the episode was extremely violent and that they would rather show it unedited. If
Death Note is shown on Adult Swim, I bet the edits will be very minimal, if it's edited at all.
Regarding the fandom, I'm not too worried. If an anime is shown on mainstream TV (compared to the really high channels), it's typically action-based. Society likes action, and they don't want to think too deeply about whatever they're watching. DN has little action, and is hard to get into if you refuse to think about it. Most of the annoying fans will give up after a few episodes when they decide the show doesn't appeal to them, so we'll be likely to get more decent fans than slash fangirl/Narutard level fans.
And
Death Note's fandom is already bad; showing it on TV won't make much of a difference even if we do get some of the awful fans.
And I just need to ask since I hear this so much: what's so great about the older fans? The argument that you've been a fan since [Insert Year/Chapter/Episode Here] and are therefore superior is pointless because, regardless of amount of time spent in the fandom, I will always hold an intelligent debater above a slash fangirl. Even if the slash fangirl has been a fan since DN began running in SJ in Japan,
she might be ruining the fandom for
me (I read DN roughly a year ago).
While we're on the topic, why not bash the dub, too? All we've heard is a trailer, which can be ignored since Viz said they are using different voice actors, and we've seen a list of voice actors. It's a dub, so it must be awful!
rolleyes If you have not heard the dub on the show itself, you cannot complain about the dub. You cannot guarantee how good or bad a dub will be until you have heard it. Some of these voice actors are complete newcomers, some have only had a few roles, and some have been in everything under the sun; you still can't say how good or bad they'll do on
this particular dub. If you're going to bash the dub, actually watch the dub and say why you disliked the dub; there are fans who will enjoy it for those same reasons that you hate it. Dubs have also come a long way in ten years; Geneon is my favorite company in terms of dubs, and they did the Cardcaptors dub ten years ago (Cardcaptors is possibly the worst dub ever, due not only to bad voice acting but to cutting around half of the show). If you haven't seen a dub in years, then some of your generalizations about dubs may not apply anymore.
Well, there's my two cents. It turned into a rant partway through typing, though.

Might not happen because of that killing in Belgium Germany. Somebody claiming to be "Kira" killed a Caucasian male and left a note saying "Watashi wa kira dess". "Dess" of course being the wrong spelling of "Desu". He cut up the guy pretty bad, too. Great. An illiterate murderer on the loose.

We'll have to see how this turns out. There have been times in the past where they decide not to show a single episode for whatever reason (still included in the DVDs, though), and there have been many of these times that the episode is shown much later on. They might take it a bit further and postpone the show for a while. They might remove the show altogether, although I really doubt that that will happen.
On the other hand, though, the murder took place in Germany. Adult Swim might not care since the murder wasn't even on the same continent.
It is sad how one person being unable to distinguish between fiction and reality can ruin things for everyone, though. People like this make the entire fandom look awful.
