New and improved Daleks/Cybermen/the Master, refrences to the old series, brilliant scripts, you name it.
Sorry, but, erm...
LOL WUT
Particularly the cybermen bit. That made me lol. You have seen them, right? It's like asking who's scarier, Mickey Mouse(new cybermen btw) or the cyborg midwives in System Shock 2(old cybermen btw). No matter how creepy Mickey Mouse is, the cyborgs are just plain TERRIFYING.

are we thinking of the same cybermen O_o the ones who look like mummys with weird things on their heads or the newer old ones that look like clunky spacesuits/washing machienes? I'll take a new series cyberman over and old one any day.

I like the old series cos it made me happy. And it was funnier, in it's own odd little british way.
I like the new one cos there was a pipe organ and I play the pipe organ and there was the spinal tap reference (i'll jstu turn it up to eleven)
but the new series is all fanfictiony. If I wanted some of these storyline's i'd just read fanfics.
And the old series... had crap special effects. and crap extras who didn't know how to die properly. But that also added to the funny-ness.

I think the fact that it IS so fan-fictiony is one of the main annoyances I have with the series. Like fan fiction, when it's good it can be downright brilliant, but when it's bad it can be really cringe-inducing. The new series has some of the very best Who ever made among it's episodes, but it also makes me cringe or groan or just go "WHAT??!" a lot more often than the old series ever did. I think the old series did the best it could with what it had, and the new series has plenty to work with but is sometimes willing to gloss over inadequacies by pretending they make it more like the old show. If it were like the old show, the sonic screwdriver would be gone by now because it was destroyed in #5's era specifically because it was turning into a deus-ex-machina device and they wanted to put a stop to such lazy writing. smile I doubt it'll be allowed to be destroyed now though--it's too good as a piece of merchandising. rolleyes

Yes, we are thinking of the same cybermen. The original ones were actually scary, becuase they were still partly human-looking. This gave them a creepiness factor clunky robots with silly faces can't posibly acheive. Even the washing machine cybermen had were scarier than the new ones. Yes, the new cybermen were done fairly well, and were frightening as long as you couldn't get a good look at them.

Doctor Who rarely scares me/creeps me out badly, but one reconstruction of "The Tenth Planet" did because they showed a still of a cyberman's head and I realized just how creepy it was. I still can't picture the originals without getting creeped. Their mouths moved like a normal person's! Brrr! Their gloves weren't as much of a cover-up, it seems to me, than later versions.

Same thing could be said for K9. He was amusing and all, but with his blaster nose he was basically the 4th Doctor's pet tank, blasting holes into walls and enemies alike. For all his faults, JNT was right to get rid of the metal mutt and screwdriver.

The new Cybermen are too silly. Their wussy voices, their goofy stomping around in unison, their retarded 'delete, delete!' catchphrase, their tendency to have their heads explode. Bleh. They'd be much more credible villains if they'd just shut up and go around killing things.

and where'd all the lovely tin foil go? I love being wrapped in tin foil! they've taken all the fun out of being a cyberman!

But K9 was so cute...and he says arf.
well, not really. but I like things that say arf.
Like cats.
And sheep.

Hmm...
Both are good, but in different respects.
The old series has the worst production values imaginable, but then again the majority of the stories were bloody good. And episodes were actually more often than not set on planets other than Earth. Doctor Who is a Sci-fi, dammit, not a soap opera!
That said, the new series has done some great episodes as well (especially the ones written by Stephen Moffatt), and I like how the new series is getting to be sort of like the old stuff with a sense of old series nostalgia about it, as well as (way) better special effects, as opposed to just a soap opera/comedy/sci-fi:lite with flatulent aliens in it.

Also: wouldn't it be awesome if Robert Holmes was a writer on the new series? I mean, with his brilliance in writing (classics like The Talons of Weng-Chiang, The Caves of Androzani, ect) and modern-day production values, Doctor Who could be the best show in existance (not that it's very far from that honour as it is). Pity Holmes is dead, though...

I've been generally enjoying the new series, but the old Doctors are still my favorites. You didn't get all this bad fanfic-like hurt/heal garbage like we've seen this series (seems like at least half the episodes do something agonizing to the Doctor that make him scream his head off or something), and he was on his own because he WANTED it that way, none of this guilt and loneliness.

I love reading Past Doctor novels, but I haven't a flicker of interest in any of the new series novels. I think that says it all.

rofl Yeah, it's called the "Blue Suit of Death". There's a big long list compiled that describes reasons why he should burn it.

And I've got some of the old novels, and it seems to me that the new ones are geared towards the kids, almost. Or at least right around pre-teens. confused

Wow, I'm surprised that so many people chose classic over new, I expected maybe more people choosing both as equal.

I chose old over new but that's more a personal thing. I like the longer stories, I like more planets and I like the sillier costumes. And I agree with the whole new series = fanfiction comments. It does really, really get to me sometimes. But I've learnt to get over it. The new series does have some wonderful moments.

id like to say the old one is better to me but i cant cos thats not rly fair as i havent seen much XD the new one has some good bits yes yes some of that wit the older versions showed. then it has, of course, the whole zomg rose factor and more.

and of course the older series=bad props and such but that just makes me love it more. i like cheesy stuff when its like two or three decades old. if its cheesy and from now, no way. and i agree with the extras not dying properly. was it armageddon factor? that one guy got shot and he was all KSJDLKSJFD and fell back stiffly. he didnt die but it was horrible acting XD

Actually, I'd prefer if he were script editor. We've had some fairly interesting ideas in the new series, but many of the stories needed just a bit more ironing out to remove those pesky plot holes.

Of course, knowing how Holmes 'script edits', he probably would have ended up rewriting the whole thing anyway. mrgreen

Yeah, that really was surprising, I expected the polls to be swamped with Tennant adoring fans who haven't seen the old series. Not that I have anything against said Tennant fans, but that just seems to happen a lot.

It's all Doctor Who though blaugh Both new and old have their good and bad bits. I chose old really because... er, well, what Roobarb said. And what I said before as well. ninja

The new series is awesome! So's the old...but I have to pick new cause it's where I started, plus I'm a 21st century kid who likes decent special affects. Though it's not really fair as I've seen more new than old. I love them both though.

EDIT: and I really don't get the fuss over Tom Baker. I mean, I like him, he's quite good and he has some brilliant lines, but overall I just don't get the hype. The best old who Doctor that I have seen (I haven't seen quite all of them yet) is five by far. I love him. But Ten-inch is still THE doctor for me.
