"You ran into a Pidgey too? I guess there must've been a flock of them or something. Bulbasaur did well in our battle, didn't waste any time knocking out that Pidgey." Matt said, kneeling down to rub Bulbasaur's head while the two waited for Teddy. Luckily they didn't have to wait very long for the third member of their party to emerge from the tall grass of Route 1. Teddy mentioned having to battle a Rattata and about how he half expected the two of them to be by Pewter by now. Matt laugh and waved his hand dismissively. "Hayes and I both seemed to run into some pretty peeved Pidgeys, but we're fine." Matt said before responding the latter half of his comment. "No chance. What kinda guides would we be if we ditched our friend in the middle of an unknown region with only his shorts? Speaking of which, we should probably head into town now." Matt stood up and held out Bulbasaur's Pokeball, which it returned to before and the rest of the group continued into Viridian City.

"I'd feel bad about knocking it out, but... there wasn't much else to do." He said, shrugging his shoulders as he remembered he'd attempted to walk around it when it had shown up. After a moment Teddy emerged from the tall grass that covered Route 1, and Hayes could only imagine it hadn't been a good walk without any clothes except a pair of shorts, no matter how comfortable and easy to wear they might've been; and Teddy seemed to agree, talking about the grass on his bare legs and joking about the two of them leaving him behind. He let Matt explain their own encounter, and nodded when he suggested they head into town. "Yeah, I don't think you'll make it if we don't find you a pair of shoes around here... and pants. A shirt, too." Hayes said, making an effort not to smile too much at Teddy's situation. It wasn't a good one to be in, but it was so absurd; and he still didn't think he believed that he'd come all the way from where he'd told them at Professor Oak's lab in Pallet Town, even if he had no idea why he'd make that up... he didn't seem like someone who'd do that, after all.

"That sounds like a great plan. Lets go" Teddy declared, hobbling ahead of his comrades and into Viridian City. "I wonder if the PokeMart here sells breakaway clothing" he whispered under his breath. He had heard of Viridian City before, it was the one city in Kanto that led to the Indigo League. Teddy had never been on a Pokemon journey, he had spent all of his life in Cianwood and Johto in general, but he never felt propelled to go on a journey and leave his comfortable life in Cianwood.
However his entire morning so far seemed to stir something deep within him. The prospect of journeying around Kanto and making a name for himself was appealing to him. Teddy needed to get to the Pokemon Centre as soon as he could. He would definitely be needing his companion Wani-Wani for the quest to come.
That was when he heard the rustling in the bushes. Teddy spun around, Pokeball in hand to see a pair of Pokeballs peering out at him from the bush. A long white moustache following them.

To be honest Matt had completely forgotten that Teddy was only wearing swim shorts until he mentioned not having any clothes. He had been like this since he met him and this kind of just became Matt's default impression of Teddy. It probably wasn't a bad idea to get him some clothes while they were in Viridian City. Matt was sure they could find something for Teddy, people in Kanto were so friendly and usually gave away valuable items just for talking to them for some weird reason. Suddenly, Matt's Ace Trainer senses were tingling as if someone was staring at him. Right after he heard rustling in the tall grass near them and spun around, grabbing Bulbasaur's Pokeball in the process like Teddy did. However, it wasn't a wild Rattata or Pidgey in front of them like he was expecting. No, this encounter was going to be far stranger. He could feel it in his bones.

He lagged behind the others a bit as he tried to take in the city, enjoying the place; it wasn't too big, but that gave it a nice atmosphere. It's different than I would've expected, somehow... Hayes thought, unsure of what it was about the place. It had been a long time since he'd heard anything about the city, but he thought he remembered hearing once that a PokéMart and Center had been near the entrance of the city. As he started to turn his head to look in a different direction, he was lucky to notice that Matt and Teddy had stopped before he walked into one of them. "What's..." He started to ask after he'd stopped, wondering why they had their Pokéballs in hand and looked as if they were ready to battle, until he spotted it in a bush off to the side of the path; a pair of Pokéballs and a mustache. "...that?" Hayes finished, asking an entirely different question than the one he'd intended to when he started it.

Teddy's hand twitched, he was ready for anything at that second. He wasn't going to get caught with his pants down, that wouldn't have been pleasant for anyone. "Show yourself whatever you are. We've got you cornered!" Teddy yelled out. There was a brief pause broken by the rustling of the bushes once more, this time they parted a bit more and a full face of an old man was birthed. The sight alone caused Teddy to squeal and recoil in horror."Calm yourself children-n-naa-na-naa. Still wet behind the ears"the old man wheezed. Teddy noticed he had an odd vocal tick, but couldn't get figure out what it actually was. "Can't be helped old man, I've got balls in my towel" Teddy declared, motioning to the towel knapsack holding his items.
"No! You reek-ka-ka-ka-kaa! You reek of new trainer! But do not fear, for Bones will help"the old man said, extending a finger out towards each of the new trainers. Emerging fully from the bush, Old Man Bones as he seemed to be called, gripped the cane in his left hand tightly."Let Bones talk you through this new stage in your journey!"and with a firm whack of another nearby bush, three Pokemon jumped out to ambush the three trainers!

While Teddy called out for whatever it was in the bush to show themselves, Hayes let his hand drift down over the Pokéball at his side in case he needed it. Matt and Teddy seemed to think they would, and it'd be better to be prepared in case he did. After a brief moment, an old man appeared from the bushes and introduced himself as Bones, talking about helping them as he gripped his cane and smacked a different bush.
It took no time at all before three Pokémon emerged, all looking as wild as the ones they'd encountered back on Route 1 and ready to battle. As soon as they'd appeared, Hayes tossed the Pokéball in front of him and watched as Bulbasaur landed on the ground, catching the attention of one of the Pokémon that had been called out by the old man; a particularly angry Weedle, as far as Hayes could tell. "Alright, Bulbasaur, use--!" Hayes started to shout once he'd identified the Weedle was focused on it, but the Weedle let loose a String Shot on it before he'd gotten the words out. ...That could be a problem. He thought as he watched Bulbasaur struggle in the string, having a trouble getting free. It wasn't the first time he'd seen a Weedle, and he knew it would be trouble if he let it get into it. "Don't worry about it, and use Tackle!" He called out to Bulbasaur, knowing it'd never get all of the sticky string off until the battle was over and it had more time. "Saaaaaur!"It roared as loudly as a Bulbasaur could, and broke free of any string that was holding it to the ground as it charged at the Weedle, sending it back into the bush it'd come from after connecting. Once he'd seen it go flying, he knew it was done; the Weedle was definitely out of commission. "I think you're a bit too good, Bulbasaur." He chuckled as it made its way back to him, he crouched down and scratched behind one of its ears once it'd reached him. That'd been the second Pokémon it finished in a single charge. Bulbasaur appeared to enjoy the affection, and Hayes looked over to Matt and Teddy after a moment to see they were both in the process of wrapping up their own wild Pokémon that the old man had somehow loosed on them.

Matt stood his ground as the strange man emerged from the tall grass like some sort of Ghost-Pokemon. The old man spoke oddly and referred to himself as Bones. Suddenly, he threw his cane up towards the tall grass behind him and three Pokemon lept out at the three Trainers. So caught off guard by the whole situation Matt just threw out Bulbasaur since he was already holding his Pokeball. Once Bulbasaur materialized he recognized the Pokemon attacking them. It was a Nidoran♂, and a tough looking one too. Matt would question how this Old Man Bones somehow summoned three wild Pokemon simultaneously after he defeated this Nidoran♂. The Nidoran♂ went first before Matt could issue a command and stared down Bulbasaur with Leer, causing Bulbasaur to lower its Defense out of instinct. Matt knew that wasn't good and that they needed t take action. "Bulbasaur, use Tackle!" He commanded, knowing that Nidoran's Poison Point ability wouldn't affect Bulbasaur since it was Grass/Poison. This Nidoran♂ was obviously a higher level, and probably knew Peck, which would probably knock Bulbasaur out in one attack if it used it. Matt considered switching out, but he was confident that he and Bulbasaur could take out the wild Nidoran♂ before that happened. Bulbasaur's Tackle connected and dealt a sizeable amount of damage. After the attack Bulbasaur jumped backward to put space between the two. "Good work Bulbasaur, one more should do it!" He said. Nidoran♂ sunk down a bit and began using Focus Energy, increasing its chance to land a Critical Hit. While it was charging Matt knew this was the best time to strike. "Now Bulbasaur, Tackle again!" Bulbasaur ran towards the charging Nidoran and successfully knocked the Nidoran out with Tackle. When the battle ended Matt noticed a light around Bulbasaur that quickly vanished and pulled out his Pokedex. Opening up the POKEMON tab he checked Bulbasaur's stats and saw that it had leveled up. He smiled and called Bulbasaur back, which jumped up against his leg to receive more praise in the form of head pets. "Good job buddy! That was a great battle. And you leveled up, too!" He said excitedly. After the battle celebration Matt turned his attention back to Old Man Bones. "Now what are-" Matt began, but trailed off as he noticed that the old man had already vanished back into tall grass. "You doing out here, old man..." Matt then looked towards Teddy and Hayes who were also done with their battles. "I think we should head into town now..." He suggested.

From the moment that the Pokemon burst out from the bushes, Teddy felt that fire in his eyes again. Ahead of him lay a Caterpie, a bug Pokemon that would eventually evolve into a Butterfree. He had never really seen that many bug Pokemon before, Cianwood wasn't well known for it's oceans. He looked around to see what Matt and Hayes had to contend with, Hayes had been matched up with another much sharper looking bug. If his memory of watching Professor Oak on the television had served him, it was a Weedle. Matt seemed to have the most interesting, a Nidoran, specifically the male version."Do what you must to move past this milestone boys! Fight with all your hea-art-art-art!"Old Man Bones cried out, he had now moved onto a nearby stump and was directing the boys battles. A lot of sweeping motions.
Teddy removed Bulbasaurs Pokeball from the towel and threw it into the air, the soon to be familiar ping sound that allowed his Pokemon to be freed echoing through the air as Bulbasaur fell to the ground, sticking his landing as ever. Teddy went to issue an attack, but before either of them could react Bulbasaur was bombarded by thick string, pushing him backwards and stalling his attack."Do not always assume your opponent will wait for you to start! Early worm catches the bird!"cackled Old Man Bones. "Don't let that stop you buddy! Push onwards, break through and initiate one of those mighty tackle attacks!" Teddy shouted, Bulbasaur let out a roar of his name and tore through the mass of string ahead of him, soon connecting and knocking the Caterpie into the bushes behind it. Teddy cheered as Bulbasaur came charging towards them, ready to celebrate once more. They went to embrace, only for Bulbasaur to be pulled back at the last second.
String! "What the-That attack worked like a storm on that Route 1 Pidgey! What gives with this one?" Teddy asked, bewildered."Never judge a Pokemon by its cover-er-er. Even the smallest of Pokemon can take the mightiest of blows!"another pearl of wisdom delivered by Old Man Bones. Teddy spun his head back towards Caterpie and Bulbasaur. "I must have that Caterpie" Teddy declared, his eyes lit up. "Bulbasaur, if that Caterpie wants you so bad. You take the party to her!" Teddy shouted, pumping his fist."Bulba-saaaaur!"it replied, pulling the string back to the source, Bulbasaur delivered another tackle to the Caterpie, but this time it held fast and held it's ground, almost pushing back against Bulbasaur, before falling to the ground defeated."Throw your balls boy! Take the Mon for yourself!"Bones cried out, jumping for joy.
Teddy pulled out one of the many balls stowed away in his towel knapsack. Pressing the middle button he threw it as though he was swimming, curving his arm up and through, throwing the ball at the height of the arc. The ball hit the Caterpie and sprung open, consuming it in light. When it finished, the ball lay on the ground shaking. "Come on!" it shook a bit less "Go On!" and then one final time, before ceasing. Teddy fell to his knees in celebration. Bulbasaur taking the ball in it's mouth and delivering it to Teddy's bare dirty feet. "Good work buddy. How you feeling? Bet that took it out of you" Teddy said, scratching his Bulbasaur's chin to which it replied with a cheerful growl. "You can return now buddy. You deserve a good rest" more light engulfed Bulbasaur as he returned to his Pokeball. Teddy took both of his Pokeballs and popped them back into the knapsack.

Teddy was a ball of excitement following his successful capture of the brutish Caterpie the Old Man Bones had stirred from the undergrowth. Teddy was excited to get to know his new Pokemon but unfortunately in order to catch her, he did have to knock her out. It meant that getting to the Pokemon Centre became even more imperative to their days activities. Teddy turned around to thank Old Man Bones for his odd words of wisdom, but the elderly man had disappeared, leaving no trace of his being there although Teddy was sure he saw some Pokeball glasses reversing into a bush. Seeing that his new friends had finished with their battles also, Teddy rushed over to them. "Guys! How did you guys do? Made my first catch. Super strong Caterpie! I'd love to show you her, but I'd need to stop off at the Pokemon Centre. You can fill me in on your battles along the way" Teddy said, already walking down the path towards the city.

Since Teddy and Hayes seemed to be finishing their battles, Matt gave Bulbasaur one last pat on the head before returning it to its Pokeball and standing up just as Teddy ran over to him excitedly. Teddy asked how they did in their battle when he got over to them, and Matt grinned and gave him a thumbs up before reaching into his bag and pulling out a weathered notebook with the Pokemon League emblem on it. Teddy then went on to say how he caught a Caterpie. This caused Matt to stop writing notes in his battle log while they walked. "Nice catch! Bug Pokemon are awesome! My favorite is Heracross, which is actually native to Johto so I'm sure you've seen a few before." Matt said before going back to his notes. Matt had had his notebook for years. It was a gift his parents gave him from their time as trainers, and he used it to write down anything he felt was important. His notes contained everything from type charts and movesets to Pokemon doodles and even a dream team page. "So, that Old Man Bones was weird... But helpful, haha." He remarked with a chuckle, recalling their encounter with the strange man. All the encounters with wild Pokemon and hermits got Matt thinking, and since they still had a bit of time before they arrived to Viridian City, he figured it couldn't hurt to ask. "So, what made you guys want to start this journey?"

After they'd all finished their battles, Hayes returned Bulbasaur to its Pokeball and walked over to Matt, who'd had the most interesting of the wild Pokémon, a wild Nidoran ♂. It wasn't every day you ran into one of them... but it wasn't a normal encounter, he supposed. "Not a bad idea, I don't know how I'd feel if we ran into Bones again." He said in reply to Matt's suggestion of heading farther in, not that he'd particularly minded the odd-spoken man. He'd been a bit odd is all, and hadn't wasted any time in leaving after they'd all finished.
Teddy came over a moment later asking how they did and telling them about his catch, and after that they all continued into the city as they talked. A Bug-type, huh? Hayes thought as Matt talked about Bug-types in turn, glad it'd been a Caterpie at least; he wasn't opposed to all Bug-types, but he wasn't all that keen on some of them... hopefully Matt didn't turn out to be a Bug Catcher or anything. "Nice work, it's good that something came out of that." He added after a moment of reflection, impressed one of them already had another Pokémon. "It was all good on my end, I don't think I've really had to do much." Hayes said with a chuckle, knowing it was true. Bulbasaur had sped through the only two Pokémon they'd come across so far and he'd basically been along for the ride.
As Hayes was looking around, Matt asked the two of them why they'd decided to go on a journey. It wasn't a difficult question to answer, but he wasn't sure how to word it; it'd been more of a feeling than a decision as far as he was concerned, and that made it hard for him to explain it. He brought a hand up to the back of his head and scratched it as he tried to put it into words. "It was... the time for it, I guess?" He said, scrunching up his eyebrows. "I've always moved around a lot, and I like it, but I needed to go and really... go somewhere. Anywhere, everywhere, and see as much as I could." Hayes tried to elaborate, but didn't know if he was doing a good job at it. "...I don't know if that makes any sense, aha." He laughed a bit uneasily, feeling like he hadn't explained it as well as he could've for them.

"I've seen my fair share of Heracross. Brutal Pokemon. So strong. Can't blame you for wanting one of those." Teddy replied. He saw Hayes arrive, it appeared that neither of his companions had caught their Pokemon. If it hadn't been for that Rattata falling into goodness knows where, Teddy would have likely caught that one too. Matt then asked the two of them why they had started their journies. "Ignoring the whole swimming to another region thing that was forced upon me, like Hayes here. It felt right. When Professor Oak gave me this Bulbasaur, it just felt like it was the right thing to do" he paused and swung his towel knapsack over one shoulder. "Speaking of a journey. I think I am finally cold enough for us to require rushing to the Pokemon Centre" Teddy continued with a laugh.
Viridian City was about as impressive as Teddy imagined for the last city before Victory Road. It didn't take much time for them to find the Pokemon Centre, thankfully. Teddy rushed through the automatic doors, the sight of a mainly naked man holding a towel bag attracted many stares from the trainers awaiting assistance. He hobbled over to the Nurse stationed by the healing machines. "Joy? I don't know what you're doing away from Cianwood, but boy am I glad. I know I'm in an odd position here, it's a long story. You have a phone I can call the folks on?" Teddy asked Joy to which she returned a smile."I'm sorry. I'm not the Joy you're looking for. I'm Viridian Joy, you must be talking about my cousin Joy. How is she? It's been so long since I've holidayed in Johto."Teddy was flabbergasted. He knew Joy had a sister in Olivine, but a cousin in Viridian? How far did their web weave?! "Oh. My mistake I'm sorry. She's fine. Energetic as ever. Would you be able to do some favours for me though? If you could heal my Pokemon for me and-""I have a lost property bin if you are in need of some clothes?"Joy, cutting Teddy off with a sweet smile. "Oh you are an absolute...joy. That would be super! I swam all the way from Cianwood and well you get the picture" Teddy handed over his two Pokeballs and in return received a bin of clothes. "I'll be back in a sec guys" Teddy said, running off in the direction of a changing room.
Teddy returned fully kitted out in a selection of garb. A particularly fetching red jacket was his favourite. Before heading over to Nurse Joy once more, Teddy approached a Poke-Phone. A machine with the dual ability of transferring Pokemon whilst talking to those at home. With this, Teddy called his family back on Cianwood. His mother picked up with a rather surprised tone. They exchanged a few laughs over Teddy's situation and then Teddy revealed his plans for a journey and if he could get his Totodile sent over. In no time, it was done and Totodile's Pokeball was safe in Teddy's hand.A third Pokemon to add to his team. His best friend.
He picked up Bulbasaur and Caterpie from Nurse Joy and approached Matt and Hayes once more. "What do you think?" motioning to his new look, still with balls in towel.

Matt smiled and nodded while he listened to Teddy and Hayes answer his question, saying how now was just the right time to go out and explore the world. Depsite the slight age gap between Matt and Teddy and Hayes, Matt was still glad to have met them and felt like this was going to be a great adventure. Teddy mentioned that he was getting cold and that they should get to the Pokemon Center in Viridian already. Matt figured he'd tell them more about himself and his goal if it was brought. The three Trainers made good time getting to the Viridian Pokemon Center. Despite a few missing PPs for Tackle, Bulbasaur and Mudkip didn't need healing, so Matt sat down at one of the couches while he waited for Teddy to heal his team. Matt began doodling in his notebook while Teddy struggled with the Joy family tree, sketching Bulbasaur and writing down his current stats and moves. Matt thought Hayes' goal of traveling everywhere was something really impressive, and while Matt did love traveling, there was one place he was determined to reach one day. But that would take quite a while for him and his team to be ready for that challenge. Matt was trying to draw a Heracross from memory when Teddy returned with healed Pokemon and some fancy new clothes. Matt gave him a thumbs up when he asked their thoughts. "I think we need to get you a bag." He said chuckling, pointing to his makeshift towel bag. Matt put his notebook away and got up, heading towards the door. "I'm sure the PokeMart has something."

As Teddy spoke about why he'd decided on going on the journey, it appeared that they were kindred spirits, of sorts. It sounded like what inspired them to go on the journey had been a bit different, but it was more the fact that they'd decided to go at all; which included Matt, who didn't have the opportunity to speak up before they were on their way to the PokéCenter. It didn't take them long to reach, and Hayes found himself a spot to stand a bit away from others in the building and give himself a bit of time to think about everything, as he didn't want to interrupt Matt and didn't need to make use of anything. Occasionally he'd overhear other people's conversations, but otherwise he kept to himself.
After a time, Teddy returned and asked them what they thought about his new clothes; and they were excellent, a surprise for Hayes considering he'd found them at a PokéCenter. "I don't know if I really recognize you, wearing clothes... it's odd." He answered, chuckling. "But it's a good look, I think." Hayes added, nodding after Matt brought up the need of a bag for Teddy and suggesting the PokéMart. "I overheard someone mention a giveaway or a sale at the PokéMart, while you were talking with Nurse Joy. It might still be going on, if we hurried." Hayes said, unsure of what it'd been for... but it wouldn't hurt to see.
