Actually, Link's intellect and ability is based entirely on the knowledge of the player, because if the player is a complete dunce, he never gets anywhere, and if the player is a super-genius, Link can be given super-powers (via hacking) and kill Ganon without any help whatsoever (from within the game)
You gotta think about these things when it's video games you're talking about!
Now, it's different for books, in which a character is entirely what the writer wants him/her to be.
