It's useful when you're practicing a part or when you're sightreading, so you can keep a steady beat. But once you know a song, you really shouldn't be doing it. Not obnoxiously, anyway. Like, tapping your toes inside your shoe is fine.
But yeah. There's nothing wrong with keeping a steady beat, as long as you're doing it silently and to yourself.

It's not a problem to do so. If your BD tells you to stop, tell him you can't since you'll loose your tempo, even if he uses the baton or what-not. For me, I never followed my BD when I was still in band, doing the drummer. Let alone follow what the music sheet shows XD I, you can say, improvise. And depending on the song, my foot is always moving.

i don't really see what would be so wrong with it. it helps people stay on the best (including me. i can't play without tapping my foot. lol) except for people that can't tap their feet on time to save their life, i think tapping your foot while playing is very helpfull

River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? Your BD really needs a reality check. 3nodding
Lol I'm in percussion so I do it all the time.

I was taught too also but, I have heard that in professional orchestras it's frowned upon. My private intsructor told me that part. I still think that foot tapping is good and I still do it a good percent of the time. In fact, it's almost subconsious but it fixed my tempo problem.
Most of the people in my orchestra tap their feet. I don't think that it's a problem. It's better to be playing together and at a staedy tempo whil tapping your foot than constantly changing your tempo because 'tapping your foot is for babies.'
If he continues to complain, simply tap your toes inside of your shoes so that your feet aren't visibly moving but you still get the same effect as tapping your foot.

I am a band geek
I always tap my foot. We aren't supposed too, but our band director really doesn't care. She just wants us to play well.
Got a PROBLEM with that?!

i think tapping ur foot is fine, especially if it helps you stay on beat because in the end that helps the hole band especialy depending on your instrument.

I've always tapped my foot....... some people in my class don't but I thought that everyone did.... my middle school band teachers always said to tap your foot while you are playing.... I'm a freshman now and my band teacher is always saying we need to keep count and such.... Although he doesn't specificly say to tap your foot there's really no other way to easily keep count while playing a flute.....
