Though he really should've been more patient, Shin allowed the urge to make a strike at the second pillar best him. Forcibly drawing out another round of chakra, Shin started with the same seal sequence but suddenly followed up with the reverse of the seal sequence this time, thus following the Dragon seal this time instead was the Tiger seal, where he made the slashing gesture. The second pillar was a certain radius from his right, so Shin did not even have the benefit of an existing pathway... Yet, he had drawn in enough force into the technique that the bottom of the second pillar began freezing. It wouldn't be enough to bring that medium-sized pillar down for some time, but a start was a start.

But he ran out of chakra... Shinratsu sighed inwardly: deciding at last to cut off the technique for now. Because he started with the Bird seal this time around, he brought his hands together to wholly form the Tori sign, effectively ending his seal sequence. It was back to chakra molding again...and this time around, because he had planned to wait out the full length to wholly restore his chakra reserves...well, there would be quite some time to wait off. What should he do? Or rather, what can he do? It wasn't worth it to risk too much movement...hell, it wouldn't be so good for him if the vest acted up due to "the wrong maneuvers" during resting time.

---

Cp: 2/29

Eventually, he decided on meditation...this time around, real meditation, since it would certainly be a much longer wait. Shinratsu dropped lightly to the ground, arranging his posture to the traditional lotus position, and closed his eyes. He'll be able to draw out energy better, anyways, if he was calm and unperturbed by earthly agitations. Meaning, he'll have to shut out other factors of distraction too: like Gig's annoying music, for example. And pretend he doesn't hear Rai and Shizuka landing solid blows to their rocks... Speaking of Rai and Shizuka...he briefly wondered how they were progressing along. Probably with an easier time... His mind answered. At the least, the other two did not have to worry over just how much the distance between themselves and the pillars would affect the very nature of their attacks...

Cp: 3/29

WHOOOOOOOOO. Shin tried to ignore the wind. WHOOOOOOOOOOOH! It persisted, and...had the noise just become louder? Shin gritted his teeth...the wind was doing this on purpose, no?... And he began trying a centering meditation instead... WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!! A veinpop appeared on his temple. Oh, dammit. He didn't know how this happened, but well...it happened... Somehow, he was supposed to be meditating in order to concentrate on the chakra molding process, and hence facilitating it...but instead...here he was sitting, glaring at the occasional ant being sent flying off with the wind.

---

Cp: 4/29

Plop. One of the unfortunate ants landed on his sleeve. Shin glared at the critter for a moment, as the poor ant struggled to receive some shielding from the wind. But then he sighed and allowed the ant to stay for a moment. When the wind subsided, he set the little critter beside one of the larger pebbles littered here and there, in, out, and around his drawn circle. This...wouldn't do... His mind chastised himself for being so easily distracted. If he was to get anywhere with calming his mind, he'll have to adjust to the environmental disturbances first... A distant thud, like the sound of sword striking rock. Probably Rai. Better get used to the un-natural noises too... He mused, somewhat grimly.

---

Cp: 5/29

A long moment elapsed, before Shinratsu sighed softly. No luck... Well, why don't he try and recall something very boring then, to pass the time? ... An unpleasant suggestion surged into mind. Name Kiri's financial history since its founding until modern-era! Into his mind, Shinratsu barked the order: and oddly enough...the nagging voices on apologizing to Rai, how noisy nature seems to be as of late, of flying ants and smashing rocks...thank goodness: they shutted up. Before the village of Kirigakure no Sato itself was founded... Shinratsu let out an involuntary shudder. Sometimes...having a photographic memory was extremely disturbing... True, looking at articles and sources of information once and being able to recall them was a useful trait but still... Dammit, he was reciting a book he had read when he was six verbatim in his head!

---

Cp: 6/29

...the gypsy population of the main and surrounding islands engaged frequently in hunting and gathering, but most often in the fishing trade with the mainland countries... The words flowed into his head, line by line, page by page, chapter by chapter... And as he delved deeper into his memory to recall the textbook, he too drew out energy of the mind, which his body would sub-consciously use in the chakra molding process. Without a proper monetary system, however, the indigenous peoples of the Water Country islands often bartered their goods for foreign goods they were not able to obtain in their own country... The goods exported from the Water Country varied widely, from the many sea delicacies of all types: swordfish, squish, manatee to beads and gorgeous jewelry.

---

Cp: 7/29

Ok, so he knew the early history part well... However...the lack of a coined monetary system would change, when the indigenous peoples of Kiri began advancing into the area they will be most well known for: smithing. Thus, the first coins were minted, forged from precious metals: bronze, silver, and gold. Shinratsu did not know how his outer demeanor had calmed so... He was sitting perfectly stilly now, still in lotus-position, the only difference...was that his formerly turbulent aura had calmed... Ho. Even if the method was a bit funny...he achieved his proximate goal, now, hadn't he? Now perhaps, he could move on to the usual centering meditation...

---

Cp: 8/29

Tsukiyomi, goddess of twilight cold... Embrace like the tundra, the ice and snow. Your embrace, I welcome, though freezing cold: yet do enshroud, come, do enfold... How strange...where had this prayer came from? Yet...Shinratsu found himself oddly reciting the words into mind. Kisses descend, from Artemis (the Moon) chaste. O gently lead back the meandering, the strayers from the path... Until home left once again the home returned... As if answering his prayer, Shinratsu thought he felt the wind gently embrace him... Yet, there was something bittersweet about that thought... That cruelly gentle touch, almost like the embrace of a mother...

---

Cp: 9/29

He knew...he understood very well that his life would have never been the same ever again, ever since his father made that fatal choice to at least have tried to bring his family safely out of Kiri... Looking back, Shinratsu wonders: why was it him? So many had died...for the sake of the head family's wishes...he is living on their spilled blood... If he is living on their spilled blood...why is he the one to have a family again now, to have friends... Friends...? What was the meaning of such a word anyways...? To take away only to give...? A month ago, he was so sure of his path...so certain...now...his supposedly carved in stone future seemed to bend a little at the sides...

---

Cp: 10/29

And of course, what he doesn't understand...why was Rai...why was Cronos... There had always been a certain barrier between Shin and the other rookies he had met here. He was from a noble family, from an ancient clan...a foreigner exiled from his own village...not to even consider his own exotic kekkai genkai... He had effortlessly maintained his place as top of the class throughout the Academy courses...while Cronos always worked so hard... Yet, why does the other persist? Chasing him even though...even if subconsciously understanding the barrier... The young Fubuki's eyes hardened. He would not allow it. He would never allow it...

---

Cp: 11/29

He could not afford to let another get ahead. There was something he must do in this life... And these footsteps behind him, the running, he'll make them disappear. He won't allow them to pull ahead...no, not even reach him. His mind was decided. He'll grace Cronos' efforts and show him what he was really capable of when he is actually trying - while before it had been natural grace, natural talent. Shin raised his right arm, extending it into the air, hand in the half-formation for the Tiger seal. The molding process was becoming easier now...he could feel the newly formed chakra flowing into his drained reserves... For some reason, when he thinks of chakra molding now...

---

Cp: 12/29

A certain strange, cloud-like symbol floated into mind. He knew he saw it somewhere before, but where...Shin was having slight troubles with recalling... It should be on pale purple cloth, with an almost iridescent sheen... Where had he saw such a robe? An image came to mind: long, flowing midnight-blue hair upswept into a high ponytail...eyes the colour of moonlight... Yokou. Yokou wore such an overrobe once before...that...was the insignia of her clan... Hyuuga was extremely well-known for their extraordinary command of chakra... Somehow, Shinratsu had the funny feeling that even the clan insignia held some sort of hidden importance... But can he solve the mystery, simply based on his short interactions with the Hyuuga queen?

---

Cp: 13/29

Come to think of it...his own clan insignia... The phoenix, but silver...the artic magpy... The bird flying above the lotus, symbolic of the immortal tundra...and the tiny blue sapphire, symbolizing the blue-jeweled planet... On the broad, basic face...his clan insignia reflected their Hyouton nature, but also reflected their clan's inherent grace. And the phoenix and the jewel...almost like as if implying the tundra's power...its capability of transforming the earth into barren wasteland... Power, grace... And the pale colours of the insignia, almost as if too hinting to the transient beauty of Hyouton Creation...almost sadly cold...

---

Cp: 14/29

So what could the Hyuuga insignia symbolize? Shinratsu brought the image clearly up into his mind. But what he saw embroidered on Yokou's robes seemed...different from the traditional Hyuuga insignia he saw in books. For one, the brilliant colours were gone and the cloud portion was drawn differently... There...must've been some reason. The head of a family won't just change the clan insignia, kept for generations, on mere whim... And Shin had the inkling that the two counterpart insignias had kept the most important aspect alive...but what was it? It almost...it almost...was it just him...or did the symbol look almost like the yin-yang insignia?

---

Cp: 15/29

Now...that he thought about it... The two insignias did resemble the yin-yang symbol! Yokou's was clearer, the strange but oddly beautiful way how the off curl had intwined, almost resembled the little part of the opposing side in either the yin or yang side...and coming together to form the same cloud form as the original. It almost looks like if the two portions of the insignia entwined, like two separate forces coming together... Almost like mixing chakra itself. Shin mused, somewhat distantly. Was that...perhaps it...? No, there was something else...both insignias have the basic shape, but one very important aspect had not changed...

---

Cp: 16/29

There's some sort of center focus in the insignia... The reason, probably, why the original Hyuuga insignia was enclosed in a circle. But Yokou didn't, in fact, she had chosen to form the cloud portion with elegant, tilted circular-headed curls. For some reason, there was something nagging at his mind...as if Shin had forgotten some important piece of information... He thought hard: he knows he have seen that sort of focus somewhere else, not just on the Hyuuga insignia... But why the hell was biology coming to mind? Wait...the different studies on the human body...oh, it was anatomy now...? Hold on a minute...

---

Cp: 17/29

That was it! How stupid, how could he have missed it before...? Hyuuga's insignia reflected the chakra system: the curved centering reflects the major chakra points, which is on a circular path spreading from the center of the stomach area...before branching all over, like the nervous system. Clever. Shinratsu mused. So their insignia is in a way a constant reminder on centering...concentrate on centering during the molding process to quicken and best control the flow of chakra: from the source. The yin-yang symbol would probably be a more minor point: a constant reminder to where chakra originates: a product of the body and mind.

---

Cp: 18/29

Heh. So they were a people who liked riddles hn? Shinratsu wondered just about how accurate was he...but he could always ask the trifling... No. It would be wrong for him to deal what he had evaluated trifling. In fact, if it was true...this was quite a clever way to introduce and constantly remind the children of Hyuuga about the formation and control of chakra... He could even daresay...on the lines of something conveniently planned. Compared to such... The information he drawn from his own clan seemed kind of shallow...was there perhaps some other meaning to the insignia as well? Something that he missed...perhaps in one of those volumes in his clan library that he never got the chance to read...

---

Cp: 19/29

Bah. Who needed the convictions of others, anyways? He'll just have to unravel the secret on his own. And Shinratsu had to admit...this was a rather intriguing area. Ancient families, after all, do not waste time on meaningless clan insignias...there was always, after all, some outer hint to even the most well-kept secret. Both Hyuuga's and his own clan's insignia hinted to the nature of their techniques...even their field of specialty... And both implied something about the very social nature of either clan: Hyuuga's insignia, though meaningful, was quite simple in design...both the original and altered versions... And quite a well given hint to the rather...bluntly honest...social nature of that clan. Except, like their insignia, though they might always tell the truth: there's more than often a catch, a hidden meaning...a riddle within a riddle...

---

Cp: 20/29

Tucking the information into mind, Shin suddenly felt a gnawing curiosity: what about the clans of Iwa? He was here, right? Might as well evaluate and learn about Iwa's kekkai genkais... After all, this was a rare chance, being born in a village across the seas he had not encountered much foreign limits, and what he did encounter were those of indigenous clans. A small smirk tugged at his lips as Shin remembered quite clearly: the one thing that never seem to change from village to village, among the limit-holding clans... In Konoha, Senju and Uchiha had a historically grudging relationship. In Kiri, the Wolvine and Fubuki clans had not gotten along.

---

Cp: 21/29

The reason, though foolish, was unexpectedly simple: a) the Wolvines were a Suiton using clan and b) the Fubukis were of the Hyouton wielding line. Simply put, the Wolvines did not like the Hyouton families...something about cheap, cowardly methods to stop their attacks... But really, what had they expected...? They were a Hyouton clan...their techniques were supposed to freeze water molecules... It was just too bad Wolvine's techniques just happened to be Suiton-based. Of course, the disagreement was mostly kept away from politics...never escalating to the same intensity as the Uchiha-Senju rivalry.

---

Cp: 22/29

Sure there were occasional underlying hostility exchanged, however... Perhaps partly because Fubuki was a noble family of Kiri and that Wolvine was not, the social barrier also placed restrictions on how extensive any inter-clan disagreement should get... Generally...the noble families tended to have to be the ones to harden themselves against provocations more. Well, the result was quite obvious. Fubukis became deadly with the spoke and written word... They wielded it like a lance: could seem highly polite while in actuality, was insulting the opposing end with the most elegant of words...

---

Cp: 23/29

Thus, it wouldn't be too wrong to assume that over time, that had almost became second-nature to their clan... Or rather, it became rather instinctive...their particular speech patterns. Shin had dropped good portions of his, to accustom when he was around persons of prestige and when around his teammates... The chances are...well, certain speech patterns could come across as pompous. But he couldn't rid honorifics from his speech: it just sounded...wrong...to address another by the bare name. That was why...it slightly bothered him how casually Senju Zephyr had addressed his student, Yokou, back when he was first briefly tutoring him and that other Senju child, Satoshi.

---

Cp: 24/29

Come to think of it... What he had said to Rai back there...was that what went wrong with his speech? He had not meant any emotional wounding - honest! Besides, if he was going to work with Rai and would be seeing the other for many times to come, why the hell would he want for a relationship to deteriorate to the point where two cannot stand the other? Close companionship is not necessary but at the least an acquaintanceship would do... Well...it could've come across as contemptuous. But Rai wouldn't be someone so easily daunted by something like that, even if it was indeed contempt, right...?

---

Cp: 25/29

Meaning...this would have its roots back in the conclusion of that mission. Shinratsu frowned, he had been unconscious, so he would not have known what might've come to pass after he... Knowing Giglamesh... Shizuka would've probably gotten yelled at. That much was for certain: the little Henka had after all disobeyed her original orders. Giglamesh would've been furious. Well, that...and his Hyouton limit acted up...but also...before he lost consciousness, that insane shinobi had tried to kill Shizuka... And would've probably succeeded too, if Gig had not been present. Not to mention...Giglamesh saved his life too. In both instances, Rai could do nothing...in fact...that rogue-nin had sneered on the older rookie's capabilities themselves...

--

Cp: 26/29

It would make sense why Rai was so upset then: understandably too. If Giglamesh had been delayed... A slight involuntary tremble. It wasn't that he feared death...no...it was more of...the feeling of falling short of his goals that seemed to be sucking the very life, the very vitality of his being... But Shizuka was innocent, untainted by such goals, by such motivations...and in that mission, it was quite possible Rai would've lost both his teammates at once. Heh. The young Hyouton head mused. That'll be what they call survivor's guilt... Like his own feelings, his own unpaid debt...for his kinsmen's sacrifice.

---

Cp: 27/29

And what...what in the world was he thinking? He was submitting to death back there...if he die now, everything would've been in vain. Shinratsu slowly opened his eyes. Foolish. He chastised himself coldly, the shadow of his formerly icy self returning. And weak. Too idealistic. The world, after all, is corrupt...filthy... Yet, why had his heart hurt so much when that rogue-nin was cut down...? There was no room here for sympathy... The other had tried to kill him! He should've been happy when Giglamesh cut that rogue filth down...yet...yet... That was a human being... The repeating words over and over again in his mind...had almost drove him to the brink of insanity...

---

Cp: 28/29

Those words he had wanted to say to Giglamesh, before the inevitable slaughter of the rogue-nin...before he collapsed from his injuries... Shinratsu had wanted to tell Giglamesh that...he didn't think being loyal to Iwa was like being a dog... It was true, that a shinobi is supposed to be a living weapon, a tool for the glory of their respective village... But a shinobi was also a person...it would be wrong to claim to have wholly abandoned the human aspect...thus they could never be used the same way as a sword or a kunai knife would be wielded... Those words he wanted to tell Gig...and that he had thought loyalty was a beautiful thing...

How...strange... He was betrayed by his own village. Why...yet, why...?

---

Cp: 29/29

With a surprised jolt, Shinratsu realized that he was almost nearly done filling his chakra reserves. Time had elapsed that quickly...? To be honest, the critical thinking he had done in that time...he had drawn out quite some interesting hypotheses...which he will eventually seek to confirm. Done thinking for now, Shinratsu could calmly center in on nature's presence around him: on the gentle wind, the distant chatter of birds, the occasional high-pitched screech of the scorpion (dear gods, was one of them perhaps near?)...before centering in to draw out his body's physical energy while combining that with energy of the mind...

Back. His chakra reserves were once again filled. And now, he was ready to continue again with his assignment: destroying the rocks with his chakra alone. Shinratsu got up lightly, stretching for a few brief moments to get over the slight stiffness from sitting so stilly all those time. Finally, he retook his original posture at the center of the circle, blue-gray eyes steely with determination. His right hand found the familiar positions of the Dragon, Snake, and Bird seals; while his left hand was held stilly in the Tiger seal. Shinratsu had still chosen to use the one-handed seals because of the increased preciseness when directing his attack.

He...had forgotten about the vest... And apparently, it does work based on movements...well, following that little stretching bout...the springs of the vest had apparently interpreted that as 'training advancement'... It was constricting against his chest now, and even if couldn't feel pain, the suspicious "gradually getting harder to breath" noting honestly made him a little more than worried. Hopefully, Giglamesh knew what the heck he was doing... But then again... The young Hyouton head thought a little grimly. Best not put too much hope. His right hand flipped from the half Tori sign into the other half of the Tiger seal, choosing to end the seal sequence early for now.

Focus... If breathing was hard, he'll simply just have to draw out the time then... In, out. He gave a few moments for his body to adjust to the new level of constriction. Not good. He thought. Just how much constriction from the vest can his body withstand? Dammit... To make matters worse, he can't even tell when will the level of constriction have become dangerous! Goodness, for all he knows...even right now might be... Concentrate! If he did not, the longer this assignment draws out, the more likely he'll be inviting in danger... Ignore the vest. Concentrate on the assignment... Just how far done was he? About...half of the assignment... He was getting there...

It took a few long moments and Shinratsu stood very still, but eventually his mind did calm. Not enough for him to be confident enough to resume the assignment right away, but enough for Shinratsu to concentrate on drawing out chakra for the next round... It was a little tempting, to be sure...the temptation to use handseals to aid the process...especially after that little panic attack... But Yokou's words would float into mind each time the consideration came, and her admonition triumphed: he would advance nowhere if he takes the easy way out... With the thought in mind, Shinratsu resigned himself to his assignment.

His placid ambience having returned, Shinratsu was ready to resume his lesson once again. Closing his eyes and holding the tiger seal with his left, his right hand found the positions for the dragon, then the snake, then the bird seal. When he proceeded to the ram this time, immediately following the slash, Shinratsu's right foot pushed out, and a tidal wave of Hyouton chakra flowed towards the pillar, freezing whatever was in its path. This time around, the chakra had climbed even higher than before, nearly engulfing the whole pillar, before stopping. Shinratsu ended the seal sequence there, right hand finding the position for the tiger seal.

After a while, Shinratsu began wondering: if he altered his chakra flow in certain ways, perhaps...if he could alter the pressure distribution of the vest... Right now, the vest was most constricting unfortunately on the very same place most of the body's chakra were: the stomach area. If he could perhaps alter his chakra flow to cushion that area with some of his chakra, then could continuously draw out newly molded chakra without obstruction... It was possible, that technique was incomplete...but he saw Cronos use chakra to arm his muscles during their match in the Genin Exams... How had the other done it? An impractical and wasteful method... However, Cronos had used chakra to armor his attacks...in the same manner...chakra can surely be used too as shielding...

---

Hp: 19/22
Cp: 2/29

Thankfully, Cronos had channeled enough chakra back then to give it visibility... It had swirled... Shinratsu recalled. However, to do that, releasing a constant flow of chakra would be necessary...I will be expending whatever chakra that could be regained to continue this assignment... In short, it would be costly: to exchange bodily protection and end up hampering his progress on the whole. But what about altering the chakra flow internally? Shinratsu mused to himself. Was it possible? Could he do it...? The Hyuuga clan would've had no trouble with this...what had Yokou said...? Remember, handseals are only for overcoming obstacles the body place. We choose not to use them, to not dodge our body's restrictions but to work with them...and that is why Hyuuga is superior... Yokou's voice came to mind.

---

Hp: 20/22
Cp: 3/29

Work with the body, hn? A smirk gradually formed on his lips. Shinratsu knew now what he must do... Think, normal chakra flow...like the flowing water, the flow of blood... Can he change the chakra flow enough in that area, so as to not damage his tenketsu, enough to follow the restrictions of the chakra system...? Yet enough so that he could receive extra buffering from the pressure provided by the constricting vest... Precise...it would have to be very precise... It was risky, he would be taking a gamble. He had neither the Hyuuga gift to see chakra flow, and without being receptive to pain, he would not know if he was injuring his chakra system or not...

---

Hp: 21/22
Cp: 4/29

Then, what about using just the slightest bit of Hyouton chakra as a tracer first...? He'll start with the main tenketsu node on the stomach... Shinratsu closed his eyes, concentrating... There...and gradually it flows outwards...spiraling... That much area would be enough. By will, he maneuvered more wind-based chakra into the area, allowing his body's nature process of the wind-based chakra attempting to suppress the Hyouton chakra...the two chakra would swirl, mixing but never quite wholly... Alright...he had achieved the spiraling part... The effect wasn't immediate, but as his body gradually began getting enough oxygen again...Shinratsu assumed the buffering was helping...fighting against the impeding constriction...

It was almost laughable, this scenario...to think that Cronos would have come in handy. But it did, coming up with this little trick simply from watching the other... It was almost a shame that the other was not part of the team...wait a moment...did he grudge Rai subconsciously for that? An unknown, who were never part of their Academy class...suddenly coming into his life like that, and taking the place of someone who at least was somewhat familiar... Nah. Shin dismissed the thought. Perhaps he was being sentimental again. Hopefully, the dobe is taking care of himself...

What was he thinking? He had almost killed Cronos back then with his Hyouton... Whatever happened to the other was of no concern. Besides, the other was not even good enough for him to consider a rival...no...the only possible real threat was...

giglamesh

Beloved Lunatic

PostPosted: Wed Nov 26, 2008 5:45 pm

Giglamesh saw that shinratsu was concentrating quite well, he was managing to concentrate quit well. He was replenishing his chakra threw the distrtions it was very good...but time was precious he gave him those pills to use them so he could realise the massive contribution of using them. Giglamesh was the same way at first, he didnt want to use them saw no need for them and only decided to push the body. However....war changes things he didnt have time to meditate, as if he did more allies blood would be spilt on the dry ground surface, so with no other option during the war her turned to the Zouketsugan, the solider pill. He gave them to shin to use as he had a storage of them as with many others things so shin had no need to store them thinking he needed to. So giglamesh would decide to have some fun, he reached over to his radio that had cords connected to the three massive stone speakers then as he turned up the heavy metal music it was so loud that it would almost seem to create a blast of wind constantly blasting against the back of shinratsu as he sat trying to focus. And he simply sat atop the speaker legs croosed looking down at shin eye closed with coy grin.

Pale gray-blue eyes widened a bit in surprise. Threat...? He had just thought...of his own teammate like that...? That was normal, it was alright... The colder side of him whispered quietly into his mind: it was alright...because there is only one place for the best, and everyone was rivals for that position... No, no! What was wrong with him...it wasn't all right...it sounded so...wrong... And where the hell had he learned that anyways...? That was why the demon of the 'Bloody Mist' murdered his classmates, right...for the sake of graduating? Sneered a familiar voice.

A surprised gasp escaped Shin and he spun around, but saw nothing. Cold hands touched his face...why...? Could he feel this presence...this... All of this is only an illusion, a transient reality... That voice! That voice...was his own...? How audacious...daring to think that someone like you could even possibly have a family again, living on as if nothing happened...after that...? His eyes casted aside fearfully at the ice path formed from his chakra purging... His reflection...and another? Except that second reflection...was he perhaps hallucinating...?

The reflection in the ice was him...but older...? Not by much, perhaps only by a few years...a teenage version of him... But the cold smile, almost cruel was chilling...and there was blood on the other's...no...on his face... No wounds though... There's blood all over the yukata... Shin realized. Blood on those hands...his hands... The voice of the other Shin became cruel: You're living, thriving thanks to the blood of your kin... The same icy touch to his face. Poor thing...even so...you wish for love... Living is cruel, is it not...? And to think, to even consider dying for filth...

Then...give that body to me...I would not waste this life like you would... The words were coaxing...and even if that voice was cold...almost calming... Shinratsu closed his eyes... I will protect your sleep...

Loud blaring music shattered the illusion.

"No!" Flipping out a kunai suddenly, Shin allowed it to pierce the other reflection in the ice. "I won't become like those other Kiri shinobi...I won't... I won't!" The boy clutched his head, expression rueful...pained, and kept muttering to himself those words. He needed to see Yokou... He needed to see her quickly...before...before he is eaten by his own mind...

Frightened... He was frightened...very quickly, his being was being separated into two mindsets... The colder, heartless side of him before he had arrived in Iwa...and the more open side of him when he began living here...but...did that mean that...thing...was the true side of him...?

He was grateful to Giglamesh for the suddenly timely blare of music... If he hadn't... It was frightening to think of what could've happened... Without a doubt, his mind was weak right now...if he saw that other him again...he just might hand over his body... And he couldn't allow that, not if he could help it...

Too disturbed to meditate now, Shinratsu popped a soldier pill into his mouth... Perhaps it was fatigue that caused that hallucination in the first place...or perhaps... No, he shouldn't dismiss that wholly. He chastised himself firmly, while harnessing the chakra that gradually returned to him with speed.

Just before that reflection in the ice shattered...Shinratsu could've sworn...the smirk on that face... The two sides of him were warring... And Shinratsu become very unsure of his true feelings. Where does his heart belong? His words to Shizuka...could he really back them up...? As an Iwa shinobi, his heart should lie with this village...but why then, had that other him...said so terrible things about his teammates...so mockingly slandered his present life... Not...a...reality...? That was ridiculous...this was all a reality! A reality that would not change... Shinratsu clutched at the locket hidden beneath his yukata. A hollow laugh escaped him. The blood that stained his hands...what horrible things he had done in order to simply survive...they remain...

He felt so dirty... Shin shuddered internally at the memory...how, only a little more than a year ago, he had relied on human flesh to survive, human flesh he had murdered...because his physical health deteriorated too dangerously, his strength too robbed to hunt the animals of the wilderness... The first time he consumed them - not even with the blessing of fire at least - Shin had thrown up at the coppery taste of blood... Yet, he still continue eating...only the thought of survival had stayed within his mind, the desire for vengeance the burning fuel keeping him alive...

However...he was not as alone as when he had first arrived into this village...a foreigner, who only had the clothes on his back...and fought tooth and nail against anyone who tried to take the last remaining heirloom with him: his mother's prize locket...a silvery phoenix made of white gold with its head proudly turned aside... Shinratsu gently touched, where the bird's sapphire eye stud would be... Father, Mother in heaven and...all who I have met here in the mountains...grant me strength...

No seals this time. Shinratsu swept his right arm up, past his left shoulder, in a gesture almost like the nobleman's courtly bow before a dance. He pushed his right foot forward and with that gesture, created a diagonal slash. The ice this time did not swallow the pillar but sliced it cleanly in two: the frozen fragments shattered into a thousand shimmering pieces while the unfrozen top of the pillar broke the moment it contacted the ground...

The second pillar, obliterated... Two down, one left. Shin cast his eyes coldly aside: the target, the final pillar situated a radius behind him. And just as calculated, the vest constricts more... There was a certain cold nonchalance in his demeanor now. A mere nuisance of an impediment... Here was where the thoughts cut off and pale blue-gray eyes widened momentarily in a mixture of both surprise and worry. Shakily repressing the cold voice, Shinratsu attempted as best as he could to calm his mind... Think of nature, think of something... Anything but that other face... Not him, it wasn't him... That monster wasn't him... Just think that! He yelled into his mind. There was one more pillar to go, he must concentrate on this lesson... That's right...there was no time to worry about troubled feelings...

It was useless. The tiniest beads of sweat had appeared on his temples. His calm was gone, he could not concentrate. What was he going to do? Sooner or later, that horrible blood-stained image would...what if he had to kill during a mission... You aren't so pure either... That cold voice...again! You had already murdered - ah! Or, have you forgotten? No...he hadn't forgotten... He remembered those children he had killed... But it was an accident! He didn't mean to... Ah, but they died now, had they not...? Sneered the other voice. True...if the same had happened during the match between himself and Cronos... It was no...

Shinratsu shook the mental war off, slipping another of the soldier pills and swallowed it. Think of the lesson... He ordered himself. Or night will be coming again... By night, he had not meant the time of the day...but rather, the shadows of his past...

Shin could almost laugh sadly aloud... Almost. He was such a horrible person, wasn't he? So stained, yet pretending to be pure... Even that bloodlimit of his mocked him...like the freshly fallen snow covering a filthy field in a seemingly pure blanket of whiteness... No...his fear wasn't of pain or death... He was denied knowing the meaning of physical pain...all those he had...loved...were dead... And certainly for him, going against Mistress may be symbolic death but that didn't stop him...from striving all for the sake that someday he could capture...and display her head...

It would have been better if this world hadn't existed... It was unfair. Why do civilians get to live in peace, comfortably with their families? Or even...why, why did he have to be born into the Bloody Mist, into a limit equally renowned for tragedy...? It was all so unfair... How he hated them all... A violent lash of chakra exploded from around him, freezing any poor intruding bug on his circle...spreading in a radius around him, swallowing over the dirt, rock, and sand...

Why... Why did Giglamesh had the others had to be so kind to him? He would've preferred it much more if they had... And especially Giglamesh, who knew that blood already stained his hands and soul...why did he take him in? As if radiating to his turbulent feelings, the violent outlash of Hyouton chakra had actually managed to reach not only the distant final pillar but froze much of the area between it and where the second pillar had once stood. An equally violent gesture, the clenching of his left fist...if he could've felt the pain of the finger nails digging tightly into his palms, even that would've been welcome...

Disappear! The pillar cracked at the bottom. The ice that had intruded onto the pillar had forcibly expanded naturally existent cracks, widening them to gaping fissures before pieces of the pillar began breaking into even more pieces, until finally, dispersing into dust, debris, and fragments of ice once they contacted the ground. Yet...the pillar remained standing...

Shin looked almost ruefully at the scene. What had he been thinking... To have admired and even imagined himself in Yokou's place, thinking it was even possible for someone like him to save... He was only capable of destruction... The tundra could give no life...and this fragmented pillar, it was like him...broken but still standing...
