She didn't drop the crate. "Alright." She said excitedly to herself. This mission was almost over and she knew it. She would just have to report to the owner and return the crate once she got back to the main part of Iwa. Yumi was bubbly now, at least a little bit from almost being completed with her mission. She started walking once again after the crate was comfortably secure in her arms. She would make it another bit of distance and have to stop yet again to make sure the crate was good and safe in her arms still.

This was one of the few times that she had dropped the crate since she had started carrying up the hill. She watched dumbfounded as it fell out of her arms after repositioning it. Yumi let out a sigh. "Well its not as bad as it could have been." She mumbled quietly. She looked at the crate for a second and then bent down to pick it up again. There was much longer to go. About ten more feet in fact until she was done. The end of the canyon looked so close and she was focusing on that fact to continue doing this tedious mission.

Yumi managed to pick up the crate. However before she could start walking it slipped out of her arms. She obviously got ahead of herself and didn't have a complete grip on the crate before trying to take her first step up the hill. Yumi wasn't frustrated just confused. She couldn't figure out how she had managed to not hold onto the crate. Well she shrugged her shoulders and let it go. She would try again doing the same thing she had done every time she went to pick up the crate. She would squat down and lift it with her knees to get it up to the place she needed it to be in her arms.

Yumi looked at the crate again. She had obviously fallen out of the rhythm she had by carrying the crate. She had carried it for so long that now it was getting harder to pick it back up. Her arms felt tired and a little bit sore from carrying it. It was mostly her fingers that were sore because of the weight of the crate but Yumi wasn't going to give up. It just wasn't in her nature. She squatted down for the third time to pick the crate up and walk it up the hill.

Yumi picked up the crate with ease. She looked happy again as she bustled up the inclined hill. She was happy to be almost completed with her first genin mission. It felt so good to be accomplishing something of some value. Yumi was the kind of person that liked to help people if she could and by completing this mission she felt that she was helping someone that lost something important to them. She smiled a little as she walked. She would have to readjust the crate for the last time, that is if she didn't drop it. The last stretch of the race so to speak.

Yumi had completed it up the hill and was out of the Aburai canyon. She looked extremely satisfied with herself for having made it with relative ease. She still had the crate in her arms as she headed out of the canyon. She would go report to the traveler in Iwa that had lost the crate and return it. She would head back into town and look a little worn but not too bad.

Shin grumbled lightly to himself before glaring at the "voluntary nurse" that had taken the liberty to dragging him into the canyon, pronto, at sunrise. See, now, the young Fubuki had returned from his first mission hospitalized...and the pale-eyed woman in front of him didn't seem too amused that "a boy so young and at a tender blossoming age" was rudely "carved like a peeled vegetable". But then again, the mission itself was another matter. Actually...not really. According to the said Hyuuga lady, the Tsuchikage himself stated (if a certain Giglamesh gets his students killed, accidentally or not...) Ho hum. Looks like someone read the newspapers...

Shin placed a mental note to catch up on the Iwa Times. Now, back to the original matters. Apparently, the Hyuuga lady Sannin knew Giglamesh and wouldn't want him to get into trouble... Shin got the heavy suspicion it was only an excuse though...even if the Senju Sannin back then had displayed a passing interest... Anyways, he sure didn't feel life endangered back then after the mission...perhaps...or maybe, he was overthinking again. Speaking of which...his original kidnapper got beaten up for unknown reasons by his student and was currently unconscious.

"But you couldn't feel pain." She had pointed out. Which to be honest and all, in Shin's book, it was quite the fair reason. However, Shin wasn't about to admit she was right...at least not yet... Besides, what was he talking about? These people practically kidnapped him, for pete's sake! A single elegant eyebrow twitched irritably.

"Well then!" The Lady Sannin...Hyuuga Yokou-sama as she was called by the others...began cheerfully, as if the said Hyouton victim who was her current prey wasn't glaring irately at her. "The best road to recovery is to get some exercise. So why not make the most use of your recovery time?" Shin had other thoughts about that. "This isn't recovery time..." He politely pointed out. "It's manipulating a poor, injured eleven-year-old boy... Isn't there some legislation against that?" A pregnant silence ensued before he continued, accompanied by a groan and palm to the forehead. "I still can't believe this... Surely, he wouldn't..."

A vein suddenly pulsed dangerously on Shin's temple. Of course Giglamesh would not refuse a request from this woman... This...this...MARTINET of a woman... "But it's not even dawn yet...it's..." Shin began grumbling, for the fiftieth time in the span of fifteen minutes but his voice trailed off, trying to find a fitting adjective for this...training session from hell...

Yokou only beamed, finishing the sentence for the poor boy. "Why, it's the best time to train youth!"

"I myself never learned this technique." Explained Yokou. "You really should develop good training habits early, Shin-kun...because later in the higher ranks, you'll have more trouble fitting training into your schedule. Now..." Her tone became more admonishing. "Giglamesh-san may not approve of training in his house, but that does not mean you cannot go find time elsewhere." Damn. Hitting the nail right on target... Yet, his face must've looked confused, for the Hyuuga head of family continued... "Hmnn...however, any certified teacher are expected to be able to teach any Jutsu, regardless of they having learned it or not." Smilingly, Yokou gestured in Shin's direction.

"Of course, considering as long as the teacher has a good understanding of what that technique would demand...if the student be fit and capable of learning it. That way, there would be no danger of chakra depletion."
Shin suspected the answer already, but he couldn't help but ask: "...Hyuuga-sama...what would be the evaluation chart, then...?" Yokou pressed a single finger to her lips, looking more cheerful then ever. Maybe Zephyr wasn't the only one who had his time genetically stopped... And she gave her response: "Your chakra levels, Shin-kun, and your control of it. If you have excellent chakra control, theoretically you can learn any Jutsu...and in terms of Ninjutsu, you will be able to command jurisdiction over multiple elements."

"You and sensei are quite lucky...being able to command three elements."
At this, Shin couldn't help but speak out in protest. "Ice isn't an official element...neither is wood..." "True." Said Yokou. "Your clan techniques are based on elemental composition...however, when you ferment grapes to create wine, can you still say the wine is the grapes?" Shin may be a genius but...following up logicially with this woman... "No?" He muttered.

"The wine will still have the properties of the grapes, true, but will be respectably on a standing of its own." Yokou smiled again, a small teasing smile at the boy. "Confused?" Shin shook his head. This woman may be weird, but she's proving to be a very good teacher...able in attracting her students' attention and her dynamic method of teaching makes her words unforgettable...

"Excellent." She said. "For, if you cannot accept ice as a separate entity, the wind and water under your command will not merge, but remain their separate identities. Hmn...sensei will be able to explain it better...eh, or maybe not... But the point is, to merge the two entites into something stronger. However..." Her voice trailed off as she eyed the boy. "Though potential is here, the provided effort is poor. I can believe you to be among the strongest offensive Genins...but the stamina...honestly, the young Genjutsu mistresses of our village will have better fortitude. We'll worry later about physical stamina... I don't teach that." Yokou gave a pitying glance at Shin. "Sensei will...eh...help you with that..."

"Our goal is to expand you chakra reserves significantly until you be anywhere near of a human enough state to bear the burden of heavy ninjutsu usage. Thus, this particular lesson. You've learned chakra control by yourself. Now, we'll put it into use in a simple offensive technique: Ayame Tori no Jutsu."

From the way she introduced the Jutsu, Shinratsu would've honestly believed this woman to be a respected Ninjutsu instructor... But all of the Konoha group he had met insisted Yokou was not an official instructor, but the most famous "clan Taijutsu" instructor of the village. Rumor according, Hyuuga were very good as teachers...but were extremely strict and demanding. Oh, he believed them alright. According to a certain Nara, because Yokou didn't have the demanding I'm-gonna-skewer-you-if-you-don't-do-this-exercise-right demeanor, she was thus a highly popular tutor. A pity as clan head of family, Yokou rarely had time in her overcrowded schedule for such duties.

But things seemed to be rather different now... The Konoha group was rather comfortably settling in here in Iwa. Not to say they didn't miss home, but their presence is gradually being tolerated more by the Iwa natives. At first, the people were highly suspicious of the Konoha indigenous...Shin reminisced the time when he was treated like such too...but then, the suspicion gradually died down. Their leaders were enigmatic enough, certainly, to attract the attention to start and build relationships...

Shin, enraptured by his thoughts was disrupted by a dangling spool of wire in front of his eyes.

"Shinobi wire. The finest...well-rounded type for Shuriken techniques." Said Yokou, glad to have gotten her student's full attention again. "However, performed at a quick enough speed, the wire can still cut." Pale eyes fixated on the boy. "Oh, don't worry about it. It's yours. Not that Shikamori would miss it anyways..." This was followed up with a light, suspicious cough.

Shinratsu sweatdropped.

Ah.
So that's where the wire came from.

Yokou continued on cheerfully. "It's also rounded so you won't get skinned like a vegetable while practicing..." For the second time that day...or morning...Shin sweatdropped.

Yep, definitely sadistic. He could see why Gig would get along with her.

Kami-sama must really hate him...

"Well then, now that you have been introduced to the tool...we shall begin." A pregnant silence ensued. "...? What's the matter, boy?" Yokou chewed out the words slowly. "Wait...don't tell me...you don't know how to use shinobi wire?" A grudging nod answered her. A soft sigh and Yokou pressed a palm to her forehead. "If we're to progress efficiently, Shin-kun, you must not hesitate to speak up." The Sannin folded her arms. "I may be capable of many things, but telepathy is not among them." Shin's face must've look astounded, for Yokou continued, albeit a little patiently. "Obliterate any Hyuuga misconceptions you have heard..."

A pregnant pause. "What we read, are the motions of the body to determine our our opponents' emotional state." Yokou explained. "You must've heard how an "emotionless" opponent is the most difficult to defeat...?"
"Hai." Answered the boy. "Because they're, then, the perfect tool."

Yokou bent down until her piercing lavender eyes were eye-level to Shin's. "Wrong." She said. "The most dangerous opponent is an impassioned one." A pause. "Confused? But I suppose it is natural..." Yokou fisted her right hand before swiftly, before Shin knew what was going on, two fingers pointed at his forehead. Despite the boy's calm demeanor, he couldn't help the shudder...Hyuuga's killing stance.

"Boy, our goal is not to fear "weapons". Weapons are meaningless, without a wielder. You can say..." A small smile graced the Sannin woman's beautiful features now as she lightly poked Shin's forehead before replacing her hand at her side. "...that as human beings, without emotions we're incomplete. Thus, we can never discard them..."

"Even the most perfect weapon, thus, is flawed."
"But..." Protested the boy. "Emotions make one reckless...making dangerous mistakes can cause a shinobi their life on the battlefield." "True." Yokou admitted. "Do not be mistaken: I am not advocating blind emotion...rationale is necessary. And only then, will the shinobi's full capability be unlocked." Yokou casted a rueful glance in the boy's direction. "Hyuuga itself isn't dangerous." She said quietly. "It is, rather, our passion to defend our village...where our home, friends, and family are..."

"..." Shin was silent for a long moment. "And...what if Konoha betrays your clan?" Yokou allowed a smirk to grace her face. "Simple enough. I will destroy anyone who is the root of the problem." Then her voice became serious. "...idiot child. We were betrayed...many times throughout our clan's long history...but there's a certain bond that we cannot break." Yokou fell quiet as she stared up, at the brilliant blue sky. "As long as the sun continues the break to each new day...hope remains with us."

Shin chose his words cautiously. "Yokou-sama...you don't believe Hyuuga...to be caged birds?" This made the Sannin chuckle, accompanied by a secretive smile. "Who knows?" But...her smile grew sad. "No, I don't think we're unfortunate. However, there is still something I must do..." The boy would watch the middle-aged woman's expression grow rueful. Her gaze turned steely. "Before that day comes, I will not go peacefully. The faults I made, I will clean up...and Elruda will be able to live in peace..."

Her words cause a guilty stab to Shin. This woman, she has so much faith in her clan and village... Yet, he... Shin couldn't help the dark, bitter words. "...if it was my clan that was betrayed..." Oh, the irony. "I will desire to destroy the village." His words held solemn weight. A sole finger wagged warningly in his face. "And, what good would that do? The dead would never come back alive. But as long as the sun continues each new day, there is always another chance..." A long pause now. "...have more faith, Shin-kun."

Yokou pointed to the wire. "And just where do you think the shinobis of Konohagakure no Sato learned this technique? I will tell you now, from a sole clan that perfected shuriken techniques. Ah, of course...there's always some flaw in each of Konoha's families. But where that flaw is, is another family's strength." A slender finger gently tested the fine wire. "Learning from each other, like a never-ending ladder pulling the other up to advance...that is how villages progress...no, how humanity would...be they civilian or shinobi."

"Hand me a shuriken, and watch carefully."
Shin gave her the requsted shuriken and watched in eager fascination. Yokou proceeded to explain that usually the windmill shurikens were better suited for use with wires. But because they did not have any at hand... And also, she claimed it would be easier to start with the smaller shurikens, because there was another technique that effectively utilized the larger shurikens. Deft. Shin noticed, as Yokou demonstrated securing the wire: not too tightly that the wielding flow would be disrupted and not too loose either that the wire would fall loose.

To prevent either, Yokou had shown him to leave the tiniest loophole in the wire attached to the shuriken. So that when the wire is released, the trailing actually tightens the knot gradually as the wire is released. Now that the basics of utilizing the tools provided were set in, Yokou bid him to attempt wielding the wire now...

((Dun argue. Shin will be injured severely during the mission. He - is - supposed to fight a dude 7 levels higher than him after all. Believe it!

...even if Yokou is acting a little Gai-sensei-ish right now...

Since there are no Hyouton peeps in Iwa other than Shin...he'll have to learn perfected chakra control from the one with the best chakra control and then figure out Hyouton on his own by observing the one with the closest elemental composition style (Zephyr). xP))

Shin immediately decided this woman was more than just a "good teacher". She was a mentor that demanded progress. And of course, the demonstration were not simply for show...just as her doll-like face did not mean this woman herself was a fragile, antique porcelain masterpiece. Shin rewound the wire, but not finding a place for it, wedged the length around and around his gauntlet. To his surprise, Yokou praised him for the choice...for resourcefulness.
"A wise decision." She had commented. "To secure it to something akin to those senbon firing devices would've been the traditional choice, but yes...make use of what you have..."

Yet, Shin was still apprehensive over releasing the wire. So many things could go wrong. For example, he could trip and humiliate himself in the most shameful of ways in front of another village's Sannin. Yokou...wasn't cutting any slack either. She sat comfortably on a rock now, arms crossed...intently watching her student with a hawk's eye.

And here, having thought Gig was strict... Shin decided not to disappoint her. Clutching the shuriken he has meant to use, Shin formed a half-seal to concentrate chakra to his feet... But at this, Yokou repudiated him.
"Drop the handseal." She had ordered but did not explain why. Shin protested but the Sannin was firmly set on her decision. So he dropped the seal.

It was...hell...to command chakra, especially over the chaotic Hyouton chakra in his body... Then, Shinratsu noticed in alarm...he was beginning to freeze his own body by accident!
"Tsk!" A sign of disapproval escaped Yokou but in the next moment she was in front of him, Byakugan flared. Shinratsu must've thought she had meant to strike him with Juuken Kempo for mis-doing such a simple task but to his surprise...she formed some handseals, right palm glowing mystic green.

The frostbite wound quickly disappeared. The sudden warmth that flooded through Shin's body surprised the boy. Warmth? But he was not suppposed... No, this wasn't the feeling...but...something else... No, it was...it was...actually feeling his chakra flow...?

Commanding his chakra to his feet this time was like commanding a spilled bottle of water to overflow its contents... Shin grinned, exhilarated, as he raced upon the side mountain face. And then, he took a flying leap into the air, a graceful somersault, before aiming the shuriken at a tree Zephyr had planted particularly for the lesson's purpose...

Speaking of the same said Sannin, he was currently curled up, fast asleep, clung to Yokou like a parasite... The Sannin looked unhappy, certainly, but considering it was her sensei...it would've been rude to...flat out obliterate him for violating personal space. Him being the Hokage, too, was another factor.

The shuriken hit the tree head on and Shin noticed, fascinated, as the wire unwounded gracefully, slicing through the air like a striking snake. Shin twisted his gauntleted right hand, forcing the wire being released to a stop... A wild swing into the air, rivaling well Tarzan in his jungle, before Shin landed gracefully, perched on top of the tree branch his shuriken struck.

A thumbs up at Yokou, his of questioning whether it was a good enough performance. To his surprise, the Sannin grinned in return, and a thumbs up followed back...

((Technically, Yokou didn't "get" permission. Zephyr kidnapped Shin from the hospital (when he was supposed to get the operation to boot) interested in finding more about Hyouton Creation... Yokou basically knocked her sensei out as punishment (more Kage abuse)...she did heal the wounds on the boy (no problem as the head medic-nin) and when Shin awoke, referred to Zephyr as "don't worry about the insignificant thing" to a confused Shin (who remembered distantly he was being transported to the hospital)... So in the village the day after the mission...the village doctors will be in a frenzy. Shin's mind just assumed Gig being a sadist sold him into slavery (though he did know Zephyr and Yokou, priorly). xDD

The important thing here is for Shin to experience how other villages teaches and there is another thing about how the Hyuuga clan learns chakra control that Shin will need to know to apply it to his Hyouton creation. I'm putting a more distinctive line between Hyouton and Mokouton: it is canonly implied Mokouton uses life force as a stem to "give birth" to the woodland but Hyouton will be a slightly different concept (and does not use the user's life as a basis to boot). That will also be my explanation why Shodaime Hokage fell so young. x3

And no, I'm not aiming for a Sasuke parallel in Shin getting injured severely on his first mission.))

Ayame Tori Training: 3/30 or 1/18 successful rolls

But as always, training heads for the more advanced road, not easier. So Shin watched intently as Yokou began her lecture on advanced chakra principles this time around...
"Now..." The Sannin woman had said. "Can you tell me why I prohibited you from using handseals back there?" "Well..." Shin began dryly. "If killing myself by accident isn't the answer..." "I will not tolerate sarcasm." Yokou cut in sharply, before Shin could continue. "You are to commit your utmost attention to the task at hand, if completion is the goal. Shin-kun..." She continued, a little impatiently now. "Think. It is a very basic principle... You're intelligent and well-informed for a child of your age. It is not a difficult answer."

Shin thought about it seriously. Really, he did. But he just didn't know the answer Yokou was looking for... He chewed out slowly, reviewing the principles of chakra in his head... "Chakra flow...chakra flow...handseals in Ninjutsu...eh..." A Fubuki doesn't say "eh". "Look." Said Yokou. "Can you recall anyone who uses Ninjutsu...or practically any field of chakra-requiring techniques...without handseals?"

"Well...Fuuinjutsu...there's a lot of seals required for the Kuchiyose...but..." Shin's eyes widened, suddenly remembering something very important. "That can be bypassed..." He said in surprise. "...by a seal tattoo!" "Correct." Yokou beamed. "Now, do you recall anything that can be bypassed in Suiton techniques?" "Well..." Shin chewed out slowly. "I'm...not certain...it will be easier to use Suiton techniques? Oh! Wait, it's the water supply. Having a preavailable water supply is only a matter of convenience...but a true Suiton master can summon water from nothing, right?"

"Mnn..." Yokou looked thoughtful. "No, I don't want you to say "nothing". "Something" can't come from "nothing". It would be a child's observation to say something akin to that." A pause. "Think back to elemental composition for a moment. Do you use "nothing" to form the tundra fields? Think for a moment."

"Wait, wha-? Oh..." It was Shin's turn to look thoughtful. "Hyouton...theoretically draws in surrounding air and water molecules...with the ability to drop body temperatures to subzero degrees, the formation of ice is begun and accumulated..." "Yes." Said Yokou. "Your basis, Shin-kun...is the air and water present in the very atmosphere. And the catalyst, in your case, will be manipulating temperatures to form the "core" of the technique. Likewise, sensei combines the earth and water but because Mokouton techniques involves "calling forth life", members of Senju have to "provide" it."

Shin looked horrified. "Don't tell me..." "Yes...it is their very life force that Mokouton stems from. Senju suffers from their gift, too. Their lives are incredibly short...gifted as they may be, retirement from the shinobi ranks are devastatingly early...if they wish to live... No senju in history has maintained a shinobi career past his mid thirties." A pause. "Thus, their prime is in their early teens..."

Yokou crossed her arms, expression growing distant as she gazed ahead into the horizon. "Shodaime Hokage of our village knew that. Yet, he could not blunder as a leader... The people...placed so much hope in him... His last war was at the closing of his prime. But the last of his years...pitifully weakened...there...was no chance..." Yokou glanced down at the sleeping boy. In this form, Zephyr really did look like a innocent kid... "Because Senju perishes so early, their limit quickly became endangered..."

"Every...gift carries some curse." Shin finally found the voice to respond. "Nor are every Hyouton carrier immune to their...gift..." Yokou's expression darkened. "Why am I teaching you, you may wonder..." Her eyes narrowed. "I tell you now, Shin-kun...the same burden of the Senju your Hyouton branch too bears... A little different, certainly..." Yokou gestured to his gauntlets. "But...the prospects are the same."

"Impressive." Shin admitted. "Though expected, for the Hyuuga queen to tell with a single glance..." "I was at a loss at first, to be honest... But what I have seen treating your injuries and today was proven enough." Yokou rose quietly and slowly advanced to the boy. She extended a palm, flipping her right arm in a gesture of regal command...in a gesture of offer. "Boy, submit yourself to the Hyuuga clan and I will teach you the finest secrets of chakra control."
