When the unfortunate girl had nearly fallen over the green, inciting Yirath's fury, Lilah had been absolutely sure that said girl was about to become history - at least, until the Weyrleader's dragon stopped the gold from harming anyone. But it had been close, way too close, which might actually have been a good thing; it reminded the rest of the Candidates just how real the danger was if they were foolish or even just clumsy.

After that, the Hatching settled down again, and more dragonets Impressed without incident. So far, their mother was proving to be more of a wild card than they were. Hmm.

Lilah rocked on her feet, continuing to wait for whatever might happen next

Kindra turned her head when she heard eggs moving, the Brown was still wandering, she hoped he was just taking his time to find His. Two eggs were trying to hatch but one seemed more ready than the other. Her gaze flickered to the Brown again, the poor creature was a pitiful sight, torn between the need to find His and his concern over his mother. One egg hatched and it was a striking Blue, he emulated his Brown brother but less morosely and with better humor trotted towards the boys, she was pleased when it seemed to spur the Brown into his task of finding His... ah there... a boy Impressed, One more dragon in the sands to find His and still others unhatched. Kindra was getting nervous now and kept smoothing her robes and hair, still determined to look good out there.

Hm, good, no more incident thus far since that one clumsy girl. Keela was glad to see things progressing fairly smoothly again aside from the sad interactions between the dragonets and their mother. She tried not to pay over much attention to these exchanges though, as she rather didn't wish to dredge up any painful memories of her own. Parents died, it was a fact of life. There wasn't anything else they could do but move on.

Your parents died? Taith asked, surprised.

... Oh Taith. How good it would be to have her limited memory sometimes. Yes, a long time ago. It's not important. Not to mention that she'd lost count of how many times they'd had this exact same conversation over the Turns.

It was one thing to watch his fellow Candidates find their matches and lead them off the sands. He was happy for all of them. Thrilled as a matter of fact. But it was entirely different to suddenly have another voice in his head and feel another soul bump up against his, his heart even more in danger of leaping out of his chest while his lungs forgot how to work for a moment. An eternity.

Cormeric Mine! Your Orthoth will help you keep them safe!

It was a wonder the big lad didn't kiss the sand with his knees. No, no wonder, since they'd locked him in place, staring at the bronze dragonet who'd chosen him--him of all people--from all the rest.

Frozen moment ended, Cormeric sucked in a deep gout of hot air and laughed, a short, sharp burst of sound that he muffled a second too late, but nothing could tamp down his grin. It stretched ear to ear and he held himself even taller and straighter than usual.

"Together," he agreed, as the dragonet dropped back to four feet and the two of them headed for the tables. "You and me, Orthoth. Y-you and me!"

Pahlen watched the bronze and brown choose and let out his breath. There you have it— and what had threatened to become a lull was anything but. More and more eggs were wobbling, and with the shock of Yirath's outburst already fading from dragon-memory, the mood in the egg-cavern was palpably settling. He sighed again in as many moments when the blue won free of his egg and took the time to placate the Queen before toddling towards them.

That was good, then. Yes, this was good.

The striking blue waited a few moments for his brown brother to move off with his new lifemate, humming happily at the back of his throat. Hardly a hint of grey remained in his eyes now, clearly whatever else this young one was he was impossible to depress for very long at all. After stretching out his wings and glancing briefly over at the girls, he quickly proved that he wasn't the sort to spend long agonising over anything at all. Giving a trill, he trotted confidently over to Alain and reared up on his hind legs, placing his forefeet on the youth's chest.

Alain watched the others, he knew that the larger males wouldn't be for him. The moment Yirath got agitated with the happenings, made the teen move a step back. He didn't want to be in the way of her if she charged them, but than the bronze mate called to her and Alain relaxed, a tiny bit.

He was still watching the Gold as the next eggs hatched, almost oblivious to what colors came. A blue bursting out and touching its nose with his mother surprised him. It wasn't something he expected, but than the newest came walking towards....No... It can't be for...Hello Alainmine! Are you ready to come with Troiseth? Let's run and get to the meat before Torsheth! and the front feet on his chest made him hug the blue.

"Of course Troiseth. Let us beat them to the meat!" Tears streamed down his face as he placed a hand on His back and they started towards the tables of meat.

“Yeah, looks like she’s letting them though,” Zhac agreed, watching a few more hatchlings clamber over to the lines of candidates. Not for the first time, he was glad he had never been searched as a boy, when he would have thought it was an incredible honor. The brown keening over his mother disturbed him somewhat, and he eyed the queen with a set mouth. “Yeah, it would likely have been better if she went just after the weyrwoman. It’s good to have so many of the larger colors – after all those green-laden clutches before, the wings will need the stamina. But see how the hatchlings are paying her attention still? When she goes every dragon in the weyr is going to lose it. Hopefully the little ones aren’t too shaken. They’re pretty sensitive – we could lose a few…”

"Once they Impress they won't leave their bonded. That's the way dragons are." Admittedly, Lukah knew very little about dragons. He merely recited common knowledge and hoped it held true even in this extreme situation. He felt a bit irritated that Zhac would make such a grim prediction and let it show through his tone, but he would have been shocked if Zhac said something uplifting.

He could tell the little dragon was starting to slow down now. That gave him a chance to breathe and look around. The number of dragonettes standing by the table was steadily increasing while the number of unhatched eggs decreased. Falaw..... no F'law wondered how many more were left. The sounds the bronze and brown made touched his heart, though at first he didn't realize why. Then he felt the bond between him and Zurith and had a better idea. That love would be something to explore for the rest of their lives. He also realized, that he would never be alone now. F'law silently thanked his father for insisting he go to the weyr.

His attention was drawn by the flash of a lighter blue. All the beasts to hatch so far had been handsome. The light blue found his when he put his paws up on some boy's chest. There was only a few eggs left. At a meep from Zurith, F'law went back to feeding his charge.

Emkin resigned herself to waiting as the dragons headed for the boys. It was their choice. She did her best not to fidget on the hot sands. Her eyes locked onto the hulk of the golden queen protecting her eggs. Sweet and sad all at the same time, and the reaction of some of the babies to her. They knew. Emkin looked toward the girls to see how they were doing. There was still the queen egg to consider. When would she hatch and reveal her glorious self?

Kindra watched again with mild detachment as the Blue moved among the candidates, looking for His, she admired the shade of his hide, he was a very fetching Blue, she had a dress almost that exact shade too. She eyed Yirath, she couldn't help it, the Queen was so folorn, keening at each of her hatchlings now, she must surely be afraid of her fate but as much as she didn't want the Gold to die, she knew that it was coming. She was nervous now, thinking about the responsibility that the rider of the Gold-yet-to-be-hatched would have to take on, with no Weyrwoman and no Senior Gold to instruct her, would the young Gold's partner be up to the task? .. She thought she was ready for soe, mthing like that, after all, she'd managed her father's Hold or at least, the women's side of things, surely being a Weyrwoman couldn't be much different. She turned her eyes away from the now Impressed Blue and back into the Golden egg, as well as glancing over the other eggs too.

The clutch was hatching much more quickly now and all things taken equally, it had been rather straight forward - the young had Impressed swiftly and surely, none had gone Between... and three bronzes and browns now graced the Sands. Whatever the Ancientcrafter had done to foster health and potency in the plants had worked, and well.

The Weyrleader, however, was scowling as he watched the proceedings from the usual perch. The ancientcrafter was gone and they didn't know the ingredients or methods the ancientcrafter had used.... and he was not going to trust another Ancientcrafter to step into the other's place. They'd received many a flit regarding the employment of the not-entirely-sane individuals as of late, most wishing to cash in on the fame working for a Weyr apparently gave them.

Below, with Yirath curled around her eggs, nosing them gently as they rocked and legs and wings and heads began to emerge, he sighed. Not that it would matter anyway. The new Goldrider would be at least two, maybe three, turns off of taking up the mantle - it would be suicidal to put a child in the rank of Weyrwoman while her bond was fresh. But, he was reminded by his dragon, they were thinking too far into the future right now. The eggs needed to hatch, to make it past the dead gold, and Impress.

Not an easy feat, all things considered.

The gold crooned encouragingly, having retreated in her to focus only on the eggs and the one duty left to her. In her embrace, two eggs had hatched - a bright and striking blue and spilled from the honourable champion egg and a coo from the unquestionable love egg revealed the green within. Lifting her tail to unblock the path, the dragonets warbled at one another, nuzzling briefly, cooing, and started off; the green headed towards the girls and the blue to the boys.

Another green, another blue, both from what had been pleasant eggs, and their mother looked to have settled for the moment, paying more attention to the dragonets and remaining eggs than to the Candidates for now. A very, very good thing. Lilah was cautiously impressed that so far, the Hatching was casualty-free, but was well-aware that that could still change; she certainly wasn't going to be moving from the back anytime soon.

Watching the eggs, two more cracked and revealed two more dragonets. A blue and a green! They seemed to be quite even tempered, even laid back compared to some of the other hatchlings that had burst from their eggs. The blue seemed to have his sights set on the boys. The green though, was coming their way. Dezima hoped they didn't have a repeat of the last green that came to them. Her eyes briefly flickered towards the Queen, but she seemed more content to encourage her eggs to hatch instead of coming after female candidates.

<...Perhaps her mind shall shatter at last, be devoured by grief as grass by Thread, and she shall slay them all. What then for us?>

F'tiz observed wearily, shooting a tired smile over to Canoake. There would be death today, but so far it looked as though Yirath would be the only casualty.

between, carrying young hearts with them.>

That was a horrible thought. It was also possible, hatchlings were so sensitive and to lose a queen - their mother - so soon after breaking out of their shells.... Usually he wasn't the kind to hope as such, he was a man set firmly in reality who acknowledged possible outcomes both good and bad, but today he just wanted to be an optimist. He couldn't stand to think of any of this clutch dying.

*****

A'nos, studying the bronzes that had hatched so far intently, gave a mental shrug. That queen. He and every other bronze and brown rider in the Weyr would be vying for the attention of her rider. The greatest gold born to Pern in who knew how many years, perhaps ever, and destined to be the senior queen from her very first flight.... Unless they decided to send out for a more experienced gold from a different Weyr. Much as that sounded like the most sensible thing to do to him, he hoped they didn't. Much easier to influence a girl suddenly under a lot of pressure than a woman accustomed to her role, and glad to finally get some real power.

the dark-eyed man mused to his dragon even as he smiled warmly at the sight of more hatchlings on the sands. Many people stood to gain from the death of a queen, far too many for him to hazard a guess as to who had done it without some better evidence than a knife.

the bronze responded, could gain. Any junior queen at an old Weyr. Malvren or Trine because they hate us. An ambitious bronze rider hoping to ingratiate himself with the new queen rider, thus becoming her weyrmate, thus flying her gold - the greatest on Pern, we presume - and going down in history, plus of course having a lot of wealth and power in life. Anyone else?>

Not at all useful. Humm, still, perhaps more evidence would come to light eventually; it would be interesting to know who was audacious enough to murder Benden's goldrider while her dragon had a clutch on the sands.
