Susan Storm Richards Now you have left me wondering. As someone who hasn't seen or read Twilight, I have to ask... What's this sparkling thing these vampires do ?.
confused In order to un-vampire the vampires, there are several things put into play. They don't drink human blood because they're vegetarians, so they drink animal blood. "Vegetarian" is the same thing as "eats puppies." They also sparkle in sunlight, and this is their aversion to it. Sparkling would give them away. It's also why they live in the Northwest: much ado about rain-clouds. What's unfortunate is that I think this transformation is part of what creates the problems of the books. In most vampire "romance" novels, the tension is derived from the nature of the vampire. He might go berserk and chug his beloved, he can't do normal date things because everything is closed. Here, vampires are more like pointy-toothed elves, with maaaaagic powers. I wouldn't find the sparkling so egregious if everything else weren't so offense. Here, it's sort of like, "It's sexist, ridiculous crap AND they sparkle?!"

Have any of you with these points of view actually read the books?

I was curious so I trudged through the first one....couldn't deal with anymore than that but I picked up the plots for the rest online.

ah, then you do know that the main man wouldn't date the lead female who was human because he didn't want to drain her? and that through most of the books called her 'damaged in the head' or 'living with a death wish' (which was also a favorite line for most of the werewolves) for even wanting to date him even though she knew what he was?
Not to mention that after she 'went through the change' she still had all of her memories and an interesting power twist that put her into an elder within days?
*shrugs* if you actually read through the boring aggravating parts there are interesting details within it.
I actually thought it comical that the author made fun of a lot of the 'typical' vampire romances within her stories, by stating and having a lot of her characters act certain ways and say certain things.

Yet somehow the power of love overcomes and they end up with each other. And how appropriate that such a plain girl like Bella ends up being a super special vampire with super special powers. I fail to see anything interesting in the details. Stephanie Meyers ability at worldbuiling pales in comparison to authors like Laurell K Hamilton(she really did a great world before devolving into erotica) and Jim Butcher( heart ).

Someone challenged me that I couldn't criticize unless I read it, so I did. Regretfully.

*chuckles* than you're free to hate the books with all your might, nick.
I only read it because the spin on vampire and werewolf interested me.. and then I was bored.. it was good. not the best.. but still good.
Hamiton was awesomeness in her own right. I have all of her books. All but the last few published. As I said the porn with lack of plot (and yes turning men into slaves at every turn) isn't to my liking.

I loved LKH until NiC....then it turned to complete garbage. I read up until ID and then gave up on the series. The rape of Anita(literally and figuratively) disgusted me.
I really urge you to try Jim Butcher's Dreden books. Ignore the shitty Sci Fi show...the books are the best. No Mary Sueism or rampant sex or missing plots. heart

I have attempted the books many times. I have been halfway through the first at least twice, and have abandonned the others at various points in the attempt. It is very, VERY rare that I find myself unable to finish a book. The last time that happened, I was trying to read The Nanny Diaries, and even there I made it a good three quarters.
I know that the main character didn't want to date the lead and it came off as an Eve story, and she still came off as desperate INEEDAMANORILLDIE and he was still a creepy creepy sparklevamp. I know this also didn't stop him from stalking her. The problem is, even reading through all the boring bits, there still wasn't anything interesting. All the bits that weren't predictable were bad. It's not even porn! It's a romance series about abstinence! All the porny bits involve her getting bruised and broken.
If I want to read a tragic love story involving a vampire a girl knows she shouldn't get involved with, I'm going to read Companions of the Night. If I'm going to read an erotic story involving werewolves, I'm going to read Blood & Chocolate. If I want a vampire romance with a happy ending, I'm going to read Sunshine.

Texting is still a clumsy mode of communication to me; if I REALLY wanna remember something, I'll write it on my hand. xp Chris Powell *tackles* You have the next Dresden book coming out soon!!!
