Screaming Wombat Okay, I got a good one now. After a bit of subtle poking and prodding in the right direction, I finally got my parents to make the decision to replace all regular lightbulbs in the house with Compact Bulbs. Yep, all of 'em. My dad is still a little bit iffy about it, he prefers to buy the cheaper bulbs rather than the compacts (he's not a real financial wizard). My mom, on the other hand, is very much impressed by how well the existing compacts are functioning, and already went ahead and bought some more ahead of time whenever the regular bulbs burn out (which will only be a short while, those cheap pieces of crap don't take very long to kick the bucket). Yay! That's so nice! I'm really glad your mom likes them so much.
As for your dad, tell him that they're worth it. They work nicer AND use less energy!

I'm working at a new hospital these days, but I'm happy to say that they participate in many of the same environmental programs that my old one did! That's what I love about this area, you'll find awareness and activity all over the place if you're actively looking for it. heart So we're still doing the recycling thing, and conserving energy as much as we can. All our paper towels and bathroom tissue is made from recycled paper- and I've checked the labels on the handsoap and it's not tested on animals! I've found that a lot of my coworkers shop at places like Whole Foods, and had an interesting conversation with one of the doctors over surgery about water conservation methods. I love this place.^_^
I'm also participating more in our city's composting program these days. They have green bins that you put out on the corner along with the blue recycling bins, which are for food scraps and food-soiled papers, lawn trimmings, and anything else which is compostable. Our building manager doesn't want to get a green bin for our building, which is unfortunate- but I do have to admit that the recycling bins have pretty much filled up the space we have for trash storage, and he does allow us to just put recyclables in a designated place on each floor and he goes around to pick them up rather than making us all go up and down the stairs every time we have an empty bottle. So that's nice. I've found that the Whole Foods stores all compost damaged produce, and they have so many bins that I just take my little bag and toss it in with one- it doesn't seem to be a problem for them.
I'm still on the humanely raised and processed wagon, buying all my meats at Whole Foods- I get my shampoo and conditioner there too, since they have brands which are cruelty free. We use the recycled paper towels and bath tissue at home, as at work. I'm buying the organic veggies where I can, as well- but not as much as I used to. I took a pay cut transferring to this hospital, but I hope to work my way back up again. With the reduced commute time I got by coming here, though, I'm definitely cutting down on the amount of greenhouse gasses I've been contributing to the environment- and I've been buying monthly bus passes and using public transportation as much as possible.
So that's what I've been up to since I last checked in- it's great to see that you guys are all still doing your parts too!

rofl Ahahahahahaha! Sorry, that just amuses me that you had a conversation about water conservation over surgery. xd

OH and I am quite proud to say that we have a compost bin!!! ^_^AWESOME!!! I have a large compost pile in my yard!! I kinda use it for my whole little "community" though! And they donate to the pile! Woot! We all use the compost that comes from it, and we all donate to it! by "we" I mean some of my neighbors and my family. That helps lower landfilling rates!

Glad to see you too, Riku! Thanks for the welcome back! heart rikuHEART OH and I am quite proud to say that we have a compost bin!!! ^_^ That's very cool! cool And kudos to Mousepaw for getting the neighbors into it, too!!! I wish I could convince our building manager... but I'd probably have more luck getting the hospital to take up that particular challenge. Until then, Whole Foods is my friend. I had my car emissions measured the other day- and of course I passed without a problem. I am now legally authorized to drive my car around the block while I look for a parking space that will last the day, so that I can walk to and from work. Ah, the ironies of city living. sweatdrop But I did finally pick up some of those energy conserving lightbulbs! We don't really use the lights very much since our apartment is designed to let sunlight into pretty much every room, and at night my room mate and I prefer candle light, but I now have a couple of those funny little curled-up bulbs so that whenever our lights finally decide to go... I'll be ready! I'm probably the only person on the block who is actually looking forward to a bulb blow out. wink
