I have an exam in a few weeks, and I don't think I've been warming up properly recently, and I haven't been able to play for as long as I used to be able to. Does anybody know some warm up exercises that will build up my muscles aswell, but that don't take ages?? Please... My teacher told me that if you don't warm up properly before you play, it can ruin your lips and how you play and stuff. Please tell me that's not true!

I don't actually own my own trumpet. I rented it when A&G Music Company went to our middle school.

Um... there's not really any quick and dirty ways to warm up. But I don't know about the whole ruining your lips thing. As far as I know, it just makes you lose your chops sometimes and you can't get the same sort of range that you would get if you warmed up properly.
Start out doing long tones. Start on middle G and go down to low G. Then start on middle G again and go up to high G. Do all of them in slurs and whole notes. So, you should go G-Gb-F-E-Eb-D-Db-C-B-Bb-A-Ab-G. Make sense?

Thanks! I have been trying repeating rhythms going down chromatically from middle G to low G, but I'll have to give your technique a shot, because the pieces I'm playing do both go up to that higher G. Thanks a lot for your help!

No prob! I've been using that technique for a while and I picked it up from the head of the trumpet studio here at my university. Figured he knew what he was doing so I thought that it must work. wink Let me know how that goes for you!

I tried it today before practicing and it seemed to be much more effective than my previous methods (I went up a bit further to top C though... which seemed much easier than usual!) Thanks a lot for your advice!! I think it might help me in the long run aswell!
I wonder if you know this aswell.. You know when you've played for a while and you get a ring imprint on your lips? Mine isn't central at all... Its like really to the side.. Is yours? Or is it common do you know?

I wonder if you know this aswell.. You know when you've played for a while and you get a ring imprint on your lips? Mine isn't central at all... Its like really to the side.. Is yours? Or is it common do you know? Glad to hear it! Same thing happens to me when I warm up like that. wink
As for the ring imprint thing- can't say I've heard of it. I know mine is usually centered. Might be too high or too low, but it's usually centered. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but it may be hampering your airstream. When you play, you want to be in a relaxed, natural position. This may be the way it is for you, but it seems to me that trying to redirect your air out the side of your mouth takes a lot more energy. Perhaps you're just accidentally putting it over to the side over time...
Just try to concentrate on staying centered with the mouthpiece. I guess you could try buzzing on it for long periods of time and see what happens with it. Start out central and do it until it's natural to you.

I have a sliver Yamaha that I use for performances and practice at school and a gold bach that I use for practicing at home. I need a new mouthpiece though. What is the best kind? I am trying to figure out what kind of mouthpiece to buy.
