It was probably incredibly lucky that she found a shotgun when she did, otherwise she wasn't sure how useful her fishing rod might have been in such a situation. It'd served her well, but now that she had this particular weapon she put her fishing rod away in favor of it. How effective she would be would of course depend on her level of accuracy, but actors made shooting on TV look so easy...she felt she could handle it.
She took her first shot and, while she made a hit, she was taken by surprise by the recoil and ended up whacking herself in the face with her own weapon. Brilliant.

Mel had been off to the side, nursing her face for a moment while someone else beat the thing to a pulp. Eventually she felt strong enough to come out and help, so she kept a decent distance and tried to make sure that no one else was in the way when she fire off a round. At least she expected the recoil this time, and it didn't hurt quite as much as the last time.

Another shot, and she was running this time. Unfortunately that meant that she wasn't looking where she was going, and she ended up banging straight into a wall. She held onto her gun, but she was down for a moment, a little dizzy. A lot sore.

A run and jump maneuver seemed inevitable and that was exactly what Mel did. She got close enough an bam! Right in the kisser. Or...whatever it was that this thing had. She wasn't sure. She got close enough where it got her pretty good in the leg, but she wasn't out of the running yet.
