The most gorgeous moth just flew into my room. It's wingspan was at least four inches across, it was huge. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, the screen on one of my windows had popped open, letting all of airborn creatures of the night find their way toward the light of my room. So the moth came fluttering in. After figuring out how she (something in me wants to call it a she, I don't actually know, but I hate calling any creature "it") had gotten in, I turned off all of the lights, figuring if she could stop flying in such panic around my light, then I might be able to figure out something to do with her. After a minute, I stopped hearing her flying (you could hear her wings battering against the ceiling), so I switched the lights back on and she was sitting on my floor, next to a box. She was so beautiful, the markings on her wings were exquisite. I really wished I had my camera handy, but I didn't. She was too big to fit in the cups that I normally use to take little critters back outside, so I had to go down to the kitchen and get a bowl to put over her. So, I placed a medium sized stainless steel bowl over her and slid a piece of paper underneath it. At this point, she realized that she was trapped and started to panic. I could hear her wings beating frantically against the bowl, so as quickly and carefully as I could, I walked outside. I closed the door, so that she couldn't follow the light back inside, then lifted the bowl and let her loose where she fluttered off into the night.
Can't figure out how to get my screen back in, I'll probably have to get a wire or something to pull it with tomorrow, so I had to close my window. I hate sleeping with my windows closed. Oh well.
Man, she was gorgeous though. And seriously, four or five inch wingspan. beautiful.

Can you describe the colors and possibly the designs? I could tell you what moth it is.
oh, I'm not sure if I remember the detail all that well. A medium shade of brown over most of the wings, with I think four different "eyes", one on the top and one of the bottom of each wing. I think. I'm not entirely sure, I didn't want to spend too much time studying her, for fear that she would start flying around the room again and I wouldn't be able to catch her to put her back outside.

I think I've seen some of those! Did she look something like this: picture? A few more color variations can be seen here, they're quite beautiful! But at any rate, I'm glad you were able to rescue her, the poor thing!

I've been continuing with my usual- buying recycled, organic, and humanely raised and processed products.^_^ I went to see An Inconvenient Truth recently, though, and now I'm reading through all their tips to see what I might be able to do to increase my efforts in that area.

So far I've gone around and unplugged all of the electric devices which are not currently in use- apparently, they continue to draw a small amount of electricity even when they're not turned on, and that accounts for 5% of energy use in America. The website says that we can each save 18 million pounds of carbon dioxide from being dumped in our atmosphere each year simply by unplugging our TVs, cell phone chargers, microwaves, etc. when they're not in use- that's incredible! And relatively simple.

I'm also making an extra effort to use mass transit around the city.

I've learned that each tree that we plant will absorb one ton of CO2 over its lifetime.

Something which I didn't know helped the global warming problem is recycling- apparently it takes 70%-90% less energy to recycle products than to produce them from scratch. And that means less energy consumption, which means less CO2 production.

Buying organic foods apparently also helps! Learn something new every day...

There are lots of other good ideas here:

Well a couple nights ago me and a couple of good friends took a walk down to a pond we are working on making. The moon was full and it was a bit chilly but you could see the mist rising off of the pond and up into the night air. It was very inspiring and extremely beautiful. We sat there awhile and talked about current events when we heard crackling off in the distance. We didn't think much of it and went on about the world and its ways. The crackling got closer and closer until you could barely see the outline of a few deer in the dark woods. You could tell they were studying us like we were studying them, thinking about coming closer and if we were a threat! We just stared for awhile when we parted and went our seperate ways. It was like we were two groups getting along, which was a really good feeling for a guy that enjoys nature.

Wow, that's incredible! Oh, man...I wish I could go out to the woods more often...But since I can't drive (and also since I'm not 18 yet), I am pretty limited on that... crying

Well I started plugging out all my unused electrical appliances yesterday. Been recycling and turning off lights in empty rooms too.

Today's the last day of school....and my Earth Science teacher is leaving after this year. He was SO sad. And he gave us a talk about how much he loved us and loved being our teacher but that he just needed to leave......His mother just passed away yesterday too so we were all (literally) crying. cry It was SO sad...But we all gave him hugs, and he told me to "keep being a spokeswoman for nature." smile

Well I'm really getting into oriental gardens and botany, pretty much just planting stuff around the house. Well I have a story about this past weekend; Me and a couple of friends were hanging down by our pond and we found a baby bird. Well we didnt see the mother or anything because it was night and i guess that the mother abandoned it, kinda sad huh? So, we took it up to the house and put it on a heating pad and was gonna feed it in the morning! Bad news, the little guy parished. I was glad we tried though, the little guy didn't feel any pain because he died in his sleep. So I guess thats the lesson of nature. "You live then go back to the earth!"

I did a tree planting with my school EarthWorks Club last Saturday! What we did is we signed up for the planting with this one local environmetal organization that does a whole bunch of native plant plantings and non-native plants removals around our area. It was so much fun! ^_^

I got really muddy and dirty, but that's the fun part, neh? xd

Wow, I wish I noticed this later, I could've talked about the time I planted a blackberry tree, or the switch to a laptop (90% less energy consumption, pretty sweet).

But today...nothing.

I know, I can always work on that hydrogen gas generator! If can get it working and then build one that's powered by renewable energy, well that's pretty swell.

Well, I take that back, I did do something, I tried to recycle all the glass by seeing if I could melt it with this propane torch I keep around for welding pipe (I'm working on a stirling engine, a zero-emissions steam engine, that's what it's used for), but that didn't work too well.

Not giving up though.

Okay, I got a good one now.

After a bit of subtle poking and prodding in the right direction, I finally got my parents to make the decision to replace all regular lightbulbs in the house with Compact Bulbs.

Yep, all of 'em.

My dad is still a little bit iffy about it, he prefers to buy the cheaper bulbs rather than the compacts (he's not a real financial wizard). My mom, on the other hand, is very much impressed by how well the existing compacts are functioning, and already went ahead and bought some more ahead of time whenever the regular bulbs burn out (which will only be a short while, those cheap pieces of crap don't take very long to kick the bucket).
