Anybody have an opinion about mass translation as a way to learn? My French teacher makes us translate a lot, but we're at a higher level. How about for beginners? Is it better to start out translating or some other way to learn vocabulary/grammar?

*not starting from nothing straight to translating, knowing at least the basics.

Translating, for me, is very fun. ^^ I can do it with more complex Spanish documents, and hardly complex French/Japanese/Lithuanian/ect. ones.

:3 I think it's best to start out translating to learn vocabulary. Or speak a lot with someone, in that language.

Going back a little. How I learnt to read/write the cyrillic alphabet :
- I brought 8 albums of Okean Elzy (Ukrainian). I ADORE this band.
- I wanted to know the words they used. So I search for lyrics.
- I find none in the latin alphabet. To which I was disapointed.
- But I was desperate to know.
- I search for their lyrics in cyrillic and find all their songs Here.
- I write down a Ukrainian pronouncation guide and romanize the songs myself.
- Double check with reading my tranlits with the music.
- After 7 songs, I no longer needed the guide.
- After a further 10, I looked. "I don't need to romanize. I can read this."
- I decided to learn and practice the Russian alphabet differences.

I had great fun learning to read cyrillic as it was for something I was passionate about.
I just need to practice reading to become a more fleuent reader.

I used to think that I would never be able to read cyrillic and I didn't know how ANYONE could read it. Anyone who could read two alphabets impressed the hell outta me.
So I feel proud. smile

I now feel that cyrillic is a better alphabet that the latin one.

Anyone know of a way to be able to study abroad? I would like to do it before I get out of high school because I actually have a chance to live in Okinawa when I start college.

What I like to do is find a fairytale in French (or whatever language) and then translate it into English. It's really fun.
Once I get more fluent in French I plan to translate some English fairytales into French! ^w^

I've been taking Spanish classes since high school and I'm really sad that I'm not fluent yet. Sometimes I think about studying abroad but how would I function in classes were they only speak Spanish?! I'm really inseucre about my ability to speak to people in Spanish so I don't think I would do very well.

I totally agree to all of those. Also it is best to be fully exposed to the language, such as the study abroad. It is faster to learn when you are surrounded by the desired language. 3nodding

I'm going to try my best in surrounding myself with French. (:
There are a lot of French channels on my TV, everything I buy has English&French on it (Because I live in Canada), I'm learning it in school, I have Byki and getting Rosetta Stone soon, I listen to French music by KYO and Carla Bruni, and I'm even thinking about going to Ontario/Quebec this Summer.
It's a little bit easier for me because of where I live, there are so many resources.

((WOW. I can't believe I've been on Gaia for so long. The last post I had on this thread was Dec. 22, 2007. xD I took a break for a while, and stopped learning Japanese ))

Hey, you're like me with the whole "Stopped learning Japanese" thing. I'll get back to it eventually. Right now I'm so loving French, for some odd reason, when before I didn't particularly like it.

...As for studying, I normally go to french media sites, ones that are radio and have video. They're pretty neat. My friend and I are both going into college for French, though I'll probably be doing some type of media on the side like film (which is awesome coupled with French).

It's pretty cool to have a friend in school, where you could drill each other. Did I mention we'll be going to the same university? hah! Quelle coincidence.

I get a bit lazy sometimes, but right now, I'm really into it. I've been making flashcards, and I've gone to Freerice's french section and exhausted their vocabulary questions! (There weren't really all that many to begin with, but in the long run, I know how to say stuff like "Candle" and "hammer" in French now.)

I also do french learning podcasts. Gotta find the right ones to hold my interest though. Either way, it's really great to listen to the language and pick up on patterns of speech. I try not to get too traditionalist in my method like TEXTBOOK OMG- so far, I have no specific formula, I just pull from real life and such. And so far, that's been pretty fun, since I can't take any more classes in HS because I'm graduating, I've just been doing my own thing.

Do you want a PenPal to chat with you in French?( using e-mail )

Oh... and to learn french I suggest going to Quebec.
I am in Ontario now and I only know 3 other people who speak french in Ontario.

Oh yeah, another suggestion: read Harry Potter books in the language you're learning. I know that reading books in another language has already been mentioned, but HP books in particular are special. Not only do a lot of people know the story, it's also in available in every language you could possibly think of (not to mention that the vocabulary is fairly simple).

I have been trying to find a korean version of Harry Potter for a couple of weeks. I can only find ones that are only sold in korea or the U.S.
Any tips of how to get one when I live in Canada?
