Ghosts From the PastWho: LuLu and Selene When: Evening Where: Knockout Gym/Durem Orphanage Weather: --- Status: Complete Post-note:LuLu avoided Knockout Gym for nearly a week. More specifically, she avoided Selene. The rabbit had succeeded in creating distance between herself and her trainer. However, this came at a cost. She left many questions unanswered. The mystery grew more annoying and persistent by the day until it filled her head like a buzzing cloud of gnats. What turned Selene against her career as Scarlet? Learning the truth nagged at LuLu. It was a scab she could not stop picking at, and the wound never truly healed before it was reopened by her curious mind. The sigel did her homework. She scoured the forums, but Scarlet’s ultimate downfall remained unidentified. The typical ruin of an illustrious celebrity was love, hate, scandal, or a combination of the three. Yet, Scarlet’s reign over the ring came to an unexplained and abrupt end. The sigel’s wild imagination created countless scenarios to fill in the blanks. However, nothing she invented seemed to justify the old woman’s actions. On the seventh day, LuLu decided that she had enough. She needed to know the truth. The unknown was driving her crazy! She decided to return to Knockout Gym. Selene would put to rest once and for all the questions that were plaguing the sigel. LuLu allowed the muscle memory developed over numerous visits to lead her to the gym. When she arrived, the rabbit gave the heavy metal doors at the entrance a rough push. She expected them to open with their usual clatter. However, LuLu was greeted by the harsh clang of a lock latching them tightly closed. LuLu tried the door again with no luck. LuLu was startled by a voice. “Gym’s closed today. Need something?” It was Selene. Her tone was as sharp as ever. The rabbit turned to face her and noticed the woman was toting two large cloth sacks over her shoulders. More unusual, the human was not in her gym attire. She was adorned with a plain t-shirt and jeans instead. Selene was not the type to take part in a casual Friday. In fact, LuLu had never seen the woman out of her training sweats. She questioned, “What is the occasion?” Selene scoffed, “Even I need to take day off now and again. What occasion brings you here?” The woman’s brow arched at the rabbit. LuLu had not left much indication that she would ever be coming back to Knockout. The sigel swallowed a lump in her throat before she answered, “Tell me why you retired as Scarlet.” She drew closer. “I need to know.” The desperation that seeped into her expression gave away how badly the issue had been eating away at her. Selene clicked her tongue softly. She shifted one of the bags off her shoulders and held it out to LuLu. “First, take this.” The rabbit indulged the woman’s request and took the bag. It was heavier than expected, and it took the sigel aback. She ended up swinging the bag over her own shoulder. It emitted a hushed rattle from within that piqued the rabbit’s curiosity. LuLu inquired, “Now what?” Selene began to walk down the sidewalk. “You help me lug that back across the street.” The rabbit’s face scrunched up. She was uncertain how this would help explain why Selene had given up on being Scarlet. Nevertheless, LuLu allowed herself to be strung along for the time being. Carrying a bag for a few blocks seemed like a small task when the reward was getting some answers out of the human. She followed after Selene. They arrived at a building cattycorner to the gym within a few minutes. The fence enclosing its front lawn was made of iron. The old metal was spotted with patches of red rust. A sign swung on worn hinges over their heads. LuLu read over the lettering. ‘Durem Orphanage’. They passed under the sign then entered through a set of solid oak doors. They were greeted by a fragile looking old woman. She was draped in a nun’s habit. The thick fabric swallowed her rail thin frame. She smiled at Selene. Though sagging skin hung off her sharp cheekbones, the smirk was warm and friendly. “It was been a while since you last visited the children. We have missed you.” Selene nodded. She rested the bag she was carrying on the ground and motioned for LuLu to do the same. “I got caught up with some things at the gym. How is everyone doing?” The rabbit followed and set down her own satchel. She mimicked Selene and plucked at the string keeping the bag closed. The mouth of the bag soon unfurled and allowed Lu her first peek at its contents. The sigel quirked her head to the side as she pulled a tattered doll from the pile of hand me down toys nestled within the sack. She looked at Selene and asked softly, “Toys? For who?” Suddenly, LuLu could hear the hoots and hollers of a child coming down one of the nearby halls. It was a small girl, hardly older than six. Her tiny legs pumped with all their might as she ran at top speed toward them. The girl’s eyes were alight with excitement. It was similar to the look Lu got whenever she tried a new dessert at her favorite café. The girl pointed at the doll in the rabbit’s hands. “Is that one for me Miss Selene?!” Selene moved forward and gently took the doll from LuLu. She kneeled in front of the child. “Of course, Chelsea. You have to share with Donna, though.” The young girl’s expression was sour for just a moment before she agreed to the terms. She snagged the toy and a hug from Selene before she ran back down the hall she had come from. Shortly after the girl left, other children filed into the parlor to claim their toy. After each exchange Selene’s expression grew progressively cheerier. By the end, she was beaming as brightly as Santa on Christmas day. LuLu was shocked, to say the least. There had to be at least twenty children living in the orphanage, and both sacks were left completely empty in a matter of minutes. The nun, LuLu determined she was the head of the orphanage, spoke once more. “Will you and your guest be staying for lunch today? I know the children would enjoy the company.” She also looked hopeful for some company. Selene’s expression fell. “I have some other business today. Tell the children I am sorry, alright? Next time.” She shared a few more parting words with the nun before she led LuLu out of the orphanage. Once they had passed the threshold of the fence, the sigel broke their silence. “You take toys to them often?” Selene replied, “I try to come here once a month. I bring toys or spend time with the children.” The raevan closed her mouth, just then realizing it had been hanging open softly. She asked, “Why?” Selene snorted, “Because I want to. I love making those children happy. I do not do it for anything or anyone else.” The woman continued, “Why did you lie to me before? About why you continued to box.” LuLu was taken off guard. What did Selene mean? The woman’s frown grew deeper. “You were not boxing for yourself. You have been boxing for Scarlet, or whoever you think Scarlet is.” The woman’s words dredged up their previous conversations into LuLu’s memory. The rabbit shook her head. “No, I did not lie! I box because I want to.” Selene’s voice grew harsher. She barked, “You do it because you want to be Scarlet. Not because you are doing what you love!” LuLu’s wings drew tightly against her body. She could not deny that had been a large part of her motivation. She opened her mouth to retort, but no rebuttals came to mind. The woman continued, “Take it from the real Scarlet. Whatever you idolize about her is all in your head. She was not perfect. She made mistakes.” Her brows furrowed deeply. “I still make mistakes.” Selene drew closer. Her hand brushed through the raevan’s blond hair as she patted her head. “Are you ready to hear why I gave up the name Scarlet?” The sigel nodded slowly. The woman began, “During my time as the Scarlet Starlet I had a manger name Arthur. He was a stickler for the numbers and the performance. He always told me that drawing in the audience also drew in the money.” Selene’s eyes had glazed over as she relived her own past. “I could never do anything that would jeopardize my training or my public image. My fame was the top priority and, for a bit, I was happy with that. But…” She peered through the orphanage’s fence. “I met a boy in this very spot. He was around four at the time. He was so small, but so full of spirit. I fell in love with his gapped tooth smile in an instant.” A rough hand clenched at one of the iron bars. “When I told Arthur, he forbade me from adopting the boy. He said it would distract me from my training and ruin my image.” She mimicked a rough baritone. “The elegant Scarlet Starlet could not be followed around by snotty toddler.” Selene scoffed. “I had a choice to make. It was either that little boy or my career. I chose what I loved, and I would never choose differently. Franco is not one of my mistakes.” Her eyes met LuLu’s and the rabbit shuddered. Lu’s head fell low. Her eyes were downcast, burning holes into the sidewalk. Her image of the Scarlet Starlet had been shaken. The perfect character in her head was now fractured. The sigel had been lured in by the Starlet’s deception. She had allowed her head to be filled with the flawless persona Selene had been forced to play. LuLu’s hands were trembling. She twisted them into the hem of her shirt. The sigel choked out, “I-it was never real?” Selene lifted the sigel’s head by her chin. Her words were precise and silky, just like Scarlet’s. “The Scarlet Starlet was only part of the truth. Her confidence and pride are genuine. They are mine, but real people are more complex than that. I have fears and doubts, too. Just like you. They do not make us any less amazing, though.” LuLu’s felt a tear roll across her skin. She bit her lip softly willing them away, but another soon escaped down her cheek. The rabbit realized the figure she had been worshiping was only a hollow shell, perfection that was only surface deep. She felt arms enclose around her. Selene’s breath was on her shoulder. “Shh, it is ok. It is a lesson we all have to learn.” They remained like that for longer than Lu was able to count, until all her tears had been soaked away by the woman’s shirt collar. The rabbit mumbled, “Do I have to stop boxing?” She felt a light chuckle rumble through Selene’s body. The woman broke away. “That is your choice to make now.” Her smile was weak and wiry. LuLu nodded. She thought for a moment then replied. “I want to keep boxing. Not for Scarlet anymore. For me.” The rabbit thought she now understood. She should not have used boxing to change herself into something completely different. She should use it to improve what she already was. Selene voiced slyly, “Good. I expect to see your butt in the gym bright and early for training tomorrow.” SOLO

Breakfast of ChampionsWho: LuLu and Josh When: Morning Where: Their apartment Weather: --- Status: Complete Post-note:Joshua joined LuLu in the kitchen. They were both taking part in their usual Saturday morning routine. The man had prepared a simple breakfast for the both of them, eggs with coffee for him and a coloring book for the sigel. A wooden chair creaked as he took a seat across from the rabbit. LuLu’s ears twitched softly at the disturbance. She had nagged him on countless occasions to toss the old furniture into the dumpster so they could finally get an upgrade. However, her guardian always countered that the solid oak dining room set had been a steal when he purchased it. She had let the issue go after a few fruitless years of complaining, but it was no secret that wished the fixtures would meet an untimely demise. Her attention was pulled away from their squeaky house fixtures by Josh putting the finishing touches on his cup of coffee. He added a splash of cream and a heaping mound of sugar. His spoon chimed against his favorite mug as he stirred the concoction up. The sigel’s eyes scanned over the bold, black lettering printed on the white porcelain. ‘Keep calm and drink coffee’. She had gotten it for him last Christmas and was pleased that he used it nearly every morning. LuLu watched Joshua take a sip of his coffee. His face scrunched up faintly at the lingering bitterness of his home brew. He then set down the mug and busied himself with flipping open the coloring book. It landed on an untouched page. The line work was in the shape of an owl nestled in a tree. He grabbed a red marker and began coloring within the lines. The rabbit could feel a faint warmth pulse within her rune. Its lavender light brightened to a nearly white glow as she fed on her guardian’s creativity. She was happy that she would not have to seek out a meal today. The sigel stretched out and sprawled her body across the table. Her chin rested on her crossed arms as she followed Joshua’s coloring with her eyes. Her guardian was now reading through news articles on his smartphone. He paused every so often for a bite of eggs or a swig of coffee. Despite his multitasking, one hand remained diligently coloring. LuLu appreciated his effort, but noticed his coloring had been impacted by his divided concentration. She did not bring it to his attention though. In fact, this was her favorite part. Her ears perked as Josh’s marker made a wayward streak outside the black outlines. It continued to dance just past the constraints of the predetermined picture. The rabbit’s lips spread into a grin. The framework created for them to follow was always charming, but it was only as good as what was printed. It was nothing compared to wanton creativity. She sighed in awe as Josh’s hand continued to scribble far from the picture of the owl. Unfortunately, their coloring session was cut short when Josh looked down at his handiwork. His eyes widened. “s**t!” He blurted a few more muted curses as he set down his pen. “Sorry Lu. I messed it up, but we can do another one.” The man ripped the page from the book without a second thought. He was about to crumple the paper, but paused when the rabbit rose from her seat. “Wait!” The sigel plucked the sheet from his hand. Her thin fingers ran along one of the crinkled edges to straighten it out. She mused at Josh’s squiggles. A few of the red loops reminded her of a school of fish. One of the scribbles looked like a house. Each one was unique and she felt like they all belonged on the page. The parts that her guardian had called ‘bad’ all summed up to make something better than the blank canvas he had started with. Realization dawned on the rabbit. She took her seat again. “I am selfish. I can be impulsive and mean.” Her amethyst eyes met Josh’s. “But, I am ok with some of that.” Her guardian bobbed his head. “Well, I mean, if we are being honest. Yeah, you are.” He noticed the girl’s eyes squint into the start of a glare. He continued before she could have a meltdown. “But, we all have our cons we have to keep in check. I am a scatterbrain and a workaholic.” The rabbit nodded in agreement, a bit too easily in Josh’s opinion. His toned picked up some optimism. “Hey! We have our good parts, too. I know you are loyal and enthusiastic. You always make a statement when you enter a room. And me?” Josh motioned for the sigel to respond. She pondered for a moment. “You can make pretty delicious cookies.” She smirked. Josh huffed and rolled his eyes. He picked up his dishes to take them to the sink. Lu called after him, “You are also kindhearted, and you are becoming a better listener, too.” Her ears picked up on his heartbeat quickening. Josh turned to face her again. He wore a strained smile that forced his lips together. “I am still learning things, too.” He reached over and laid a hand across her shoulder. “Lu, I am proud of who you are becoming. Just let me know if anything is wrong, ok?” The man’s eyes softened. LuLu brushed her fingers across Josh’s hand and moved out from under his grasp. She replied softly. “I will.” There was nothing more to say though. Nothing was wrong. In truth, this was the most right things had felt in a long while. LuLu felt at peace in her own body for once. She knew who she was and was not trying to be anyone else. Though it had been a difficult lesson, Selene had been the one to show her this. She had to thank the woman today when she went to the gym for training. SOLO

The DebtWho: LuLu, Franco, and Selene When: Afternoon Where: Knockout Gym Weather: --- Status: Complete Post-note:It was a Saturday afternoon and, as you might expect, the sigel had a busy day lined up for herself. She had few makeup appointments lined up later as well as some errands to run. Regardless, LuLu had every intention of squeezing an hour of boxing into her schedule. She clamored through Knockout’s double doors with her gear strapped onto her back. The rabbit scanned the gym for Selene or Franco so she could start her lesson. LuLu had grown a bit concerned when neither trainer was to be found on the floor. It was very unusual for them to leave the place unattended. The sigel took initiative and approached the gym’s office, where they would sometimes hide out when things were slow. LuLu deemed it as slow given the fact there was only one other bystander in the gym to keep her company. The rabbit’s keen ears picked up on mumbling escaping from the small room seconds before she actually came upon the door. She paused from knocking and decided to not make her presence known just yet. She drew her head closer to the wooden barrier. There was nothing wrong with a little eaves dropping now and again, right? The sigel was curious what kind of gossip the two shared behind closed doors. The first voice she could make out clearly was Franco’s. “It is our only chance Selene. If we don’t act, he will shut us down without blinking an eye.” His tone was a far cry from his usual confidence. Franco sounded downright panicked; his statements came out flustered like a lost child seeking direction. LuLu’s brows knitted together as she waited for Selene’s reply. “It is a shot in the dark that may not even work. We should focus on something else.” The woman’s words were direct and concise, answering the question without any wasted effort. It was already apparent that almost nothing could shake her steely composure. This case, whatever it happened to be, was no exception. LuLu could make out the grinding of teeth. Franco did not seem pleased with her response. Perhaps, it was a bitter dose of logic he was not yet ready to swallow. “There is nothing else! Do you want to lose everything?!” There was an unmistakable slam of his hands on the desk. Before the rabbit realized what she was doing, she had flung the door opened and stepped into the office. “Wait!” Her eyes were wide and wild. The two abruptly stopped their conversation and looked in her direction. Selene was seated behind her desk and Franco was hunched over its side. The man seemed equally distraught. His eyes were a bright, feral green and lips were drawn tightly into a thin line. Selene fared much better. Her expression held well measured control. The woman quirked her slim brown and inquired. “How much did you overhear LuLu?” Her fingers knitted together under her chin. “Please, close the order behind you.” The rabbit gaped softly. She leaned back onto the door behind her and pushed it firmly back into its wooden frame until there was a soft click. Her eyes never left the two. She responded, “The past few minutes.” The girl gulped down a lump that had formed in her throat. There was a sharp exhale of air as Selene sighed. “I do not want anyone else involved in this. Any chance I can convince you to forget this conversation?” Her chin now rested atop her folded fingers. Her calm eyes leveled with Lu’s. The rabbit shook her head. “No. Tell me what is wrong.” If she was the type to run away from her friends, she would have given up on Knockout months ago. “I want to help.” Selene’s head dropped, but she had expected nothing less than loyalty from the girl. It would certainly make things more difficult for all of them. She responded evenly. “We are in a bit of a situation.” There was a small groan from Franco. “Quit downplaying it! It is a disaster!” He barked out and crossed his arms defensively. He approached LuLu. “Our landlord hiked up the rent threefold on some whim and promised to give us the boot if we don’t cough up the cash. There is no way in hell we can make the deadline. Except-" He glanced at Selene. “If we follow my plan.” LuLu parroted, “Your plan?” She quirked her head. “Why not ask to lower the rent back down? He does not really want to push you out, right?” She doubted anyone could be that genuinely cruel. In her experience, if you gave bullies a bit of fight they quickly fell into line. Franco scoffed. “He is a total a*****e. The guy has pushed countless people out of their homes. He means business.” Selene nodded her head softly in agreement and the man rested his case. “But, that is where my plan comes in.” He ignored Selene rolling her eyes. “There is a huge boxing tournament coming up this month. And, get this. The grand prize would easily cover our rent for a year!” He flashed his bright smile at the raevan. LuLu nodded. “You are going to join the tournament then?” Franco’s smile faltered. “There is the catch. It is going to have only A-listers. Invitation only. I may be good, but my rep is far from getting me an invite.” He sighed. “We just have to figure out how to get in.” He tapped his finger to head forehead as he scrounged for the last piece to his plan. LuLu thought along with him. A gentle ‘hmm’ escaped her lips. “Someone with a rep...” The rabbit’s ears perked as an idea struck her. “Why not the Scarlet Startlet!?” It was the biggest name she knew. The statement had grabbed Selene’s attention, and the sigel felt a firm gaze burning through her. Franco chuckled. “How do you plan to get a ghost to join the tournament? Do you have her on speed dial?” LuLu blinked at the man. Her eyes quickly shifted between the two of them. She could see an uneasy tension working its way into Selene's shoulders, making them drawn upward. LuLu realized Franco did not know that Selene and Scarlet were the same. Selene spoke up before things got carried away. “Even if we could track the Scarlet Starlet down-" She shot a stern glare at Lu. “It has been decades since her last match. She may have been good in her day, but she is well out of her prime.” The woman sat back in her seat. “We need another plan. We need to be reasonable.” LuLu gave her a pout. Selene still had the moves to keep punks at the gym in their place. However, she supposed the woman’s endurance was not what it used to be. A title match might be just out of the realm of possibility for her. The rabbit was not quite ready to return to the drawing board though. She stated idly, “I could be Scarlet?” Franco’s expression lit up. “That’s perfect! We will make our own Scarlet Startlet! The name will definitely bring attention.” He had no doubt the rabbit could hold her own in the tournament. Selene interjected, “Are you sure about this LuLu? You do not have to be her. We can find another plan.” The woman’s expression had changed. It was the first time she had looked worried during the whole conversation. LuLu puffed out her chest. “I am sure. I will be a new Scarlet.” She smirked, “I will get the money for you.” Franco rushed over and took the sigel into his arms. “Yeah!!” He gave LuLu a spin before he tossed her small frame into the air. The girl responded with a shrill scream that dissolved into a fit of cursing when the man caught her mid fall. Once her ribbon returned to the floor, Lu swung up and landed a punch on his jaw. She responded breathlessly, “Never pick me up again.” Franco rubbed away the sting. “There is a match next week. The new Scarlet can make her debut there. Think you can be ready in time?” LuLu grinned, “I will be ready.” SOLO

Training DayWho: LuLu and Franco When: Evening Where: Knockout Gym Weather: --- Status: Complete Post-note:“Twenty three… twe-twenty four… twenty five!” The rabbit fell onto the mat beneath her. Exhausted by pushups, she hit the ground like a sack of rocks. The skin of her cheek was tacky with sweat and stuck to the plastic-y material uncomfortably, but LuLu did not have the strength to peel herself away just yet. She gulped for a breath of air to fill her burning lungs. Her arms were trembling. She concluded that going for a sixth set had not been a wise decision. Nevertheless, she had made it out alive. The saying goes ‘whatever doesn’t kill you makes your stronger”, right? LuLu had been catching independent sessions on top of her scheduled time with her trainers. She finally rose from the ground and reached for her water bottle. At first, she reached in the wrong direction. She shook her head to clear it. LuLu was used to the format of Knockout where benches were on the left hand side. At this gym they were on the right. She quickly relocated the bottle and took a sip. Then she started to pack away her gear. She had to get going. Franco would start her daily appointment at 3 o’clock sharp. The sigel did not want to be late. If she was, she might have to explain how she had been doubling up on her training. That was the last thing LuLu needed. After all, the rabbit wanted the fruits of her labor to be a surprise! She arrived with two minutes to spare. Franco joined up with the rabbit shortly after he finished up with another client. Selene sometimes showed up later, always the more elusive of the two. Franco greeted the sigel with a cheeky grin, “Afternoon LuLu!” He ruffled her blonde hair out of its ponytail. She returned his rowdy welcome with a friendly punch to his shoulder. He yowled, “Ow, ow, ow! That had some heat!” She could tell he was bluffing though as his smiled never faltered once. “You know what? If you can toss punches like that, I let you off too easy yesterday.” He pointed at her, “I am going to bring the pain today!” A standing fan circulating air in the gym hit him at just the right moment. The light breeze caused a wayward strand of hair not bound within his topknot to wave gently. The rabbit giggled from behind her hand. Franco was as over the top as ever. He looked like a personal training ad out of a sports brochure. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” She mocked the pose and pointed straight back at the man. Unfortunately, her timing was not on par with his. She had no wind to punctuate her enthusiasm. Regardless, she continued. “Bring it, Franco.” LuLu started to get ready for what ‘pain’ was to come. She set down her bag and re-tied her ponytail. LuLu was greeted by a circuit training course. It was nothing new to her though. In fact, Franco had given her the pleasure of making acquaintance with many courses like this in the past. This one looked to consist of generous amount of… pushups. The back of her throat went dry. The rabbit gulped softly. This was bad news. Her biceps and shoulders were still aching from earlier. Still, LuLu’s only option was to complete the training. If she asked Franco to change the configuration of the course it would be the catalyst of two cataclysmic events. First, LuLu would have to admit the course was ‘too difficult’ and give Franco a boost to his already overblown ego. Second, she would have to explain why she was so tired. Her surprise would be exposed! LuLu sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly. She just had to survive. The first few minutes of training went by with minimal distress. It was punching and dodging mostly, easy enough. However, the first set of pushups was quickly approaching. Franco barked overhead for Lu to hit the ground, and the girl knew exactly what was coming. She would have to complete twenty of them. It appeared reasonable at first, but the man had a way of taking things to the next level. He fixed a weighted belt on the sigel at the start of the course. LuLu had lost even the modest advantage gained by her ability to float. Now nothing stood between her and three solid minutes of excruciating pain. Here arms had gone numb by number eighteen, but it was a blessing in disguise as it made the final two pushups bearable. If she could feel her arms, LuLu was certain she would have screamed out during the last one. She was relieved to have finished the set. Her victory was a short lived one though. LuLu was abruptly reminded that she still had half the course left as Franco shouted for her to move onto the next exercise. The sigel rose from the ground ready to dash to the next station. Her wings flapped in a few quick bursts to help her gain momentum. LuLu has halfway to the station when her vision began to tunnel. She was certain she was moving forward, but her destination was growing further and further away. She never made it to the next set. When she awoke, Franco was standing over. His expression looked to be a mix if worry and upset. He questioned roughly, “You ok? What is wrong?” His thick brows were knitted together. LuLu smiled sheepishly. “Yeah, I am ok.” She paused to think of a good tangent. “You outdid yourself on this one, Franco.” Franco’s expression sharpened. He shook his head. “Bullshit. You finished up something like this on Monday without a problem. Now tell me what is up.” His green eyes narrowed. LuLu frowned. She looked away from his gaze. She tried to fabricate another lie but the fact she had passed out only a few minutes prior made it impossible. The gears in her brain were barely turning at this point. The only thing that came to mind was the unfortunate truth. The sigel blurted, “I have been training at another gym.” The cat was out of the bag now. Her eyes searched out for Franco’s. Was he going to be angry? LuLu whimpered, “I am worried… I want to be ready for my first match.” The man did not look furious like she had expected. Actually, his eyes looked glassy like two large marbles. Franco blinked a few times and put whatever emotion he experiencing to rest. He replied softly, “I understand you are nervous, but you cannot do that. My plan does not account for you putting in extra work. You are going to break yourself if you are not careful, LuLu.” Franco moved to help her up onto one of the benches. LuLu followed his guide. “The match is in two days. As your trainer, I advise you rest during that time.” He raised a brow at the girl. “You hear me? Rest.” LuLu pouted softly. The match was so close. The last thing she felt like doing was resting. She doubted her opponent would be taking it easy. She began, “But-” Franco shot her a look that stopped Lu’s rebuttal in its tracks. She concluded, “I guess I can rest.” Perhaps Franco had a point. Even if she wanted to keep training, her body did not seem to be accommodating. Maybe a short break could do her a lot of good. She was willing to give Franco's advice a try. A New Star on the StageWho: LuLu, Josh, Selene, and Franco When: Night Where: Downtown Durem Weather: --- Status: Complete Post-note:Josh’s van pulled slowly into a dimly lit lot. The lines sectioning off each spot were completely eroded from the cracked pavement. The boy cursed under his breath. He followed some well-worn tire tracks and found his way to what he had to assume was a space. The engine fell silent. LuLu watched him as he turned towards her. She could read the look in his eyes even in the low light. He was worried. Josh began, “Are you sure you have to do this?” His grip tightened on the wheel. “I know you have been training hard, but this all seems pretty serious. I was just expecting some sparring match. Not this.” Her guardian’s gaze trailed outside to where a crowd of spectators were starting to gather. Even Lu had to admit, it was not a friendliest looking group. Franco had given her some warning about the venue and, in his typical fashion, he had joked about how everybody has to start somewhere. He had also cautioned her to stay in the car until Selene and himself had arrived. Now she understood why. The rabbit flinched when she saw a fight break out between two, likely drunken, men in the mob. The skirmish was quickly put to an end though by a glass bottle breaking against one of their skulls. The sigel sighed and turned away from the scene. She assured Josh, “I want to do this. Do not worry. I am not fighting the spectators.” The girl held out a single finger towards her guardian. She continued, “I only have to put down one person. And, I will.” LuLu’s words were bold. However, she could feel a well of nervousness bubbling up in the pit of her stomach. She was up against the local champion. From what she had heard, he was undefeated. Selene had assured her that most of his opponents had been street thugs rather than trained fighters. Still, his record had been impressive. The sigel heard Josh grumble next to her, “Just be safe. Call it off if it gets to be too much. Okay?” LuLu scoffed in response and slumped back into her seat. She was starting to regret inviting the boy. At first, she had wanted her guardian to be a part of her first live match. In light of past events, she was trying her best to keep as few secrets as possible from him. The whole open communication thing had been working well enough for both of them, and Josh had been pretty supportive of her previous endeavors. She thought he would enjoy being a part of this, too. What she had not expected was for him to become a nervous wreck an hour before the event. Even worse, his anxiety was starting to rub off on her. Josh spoke again, “Do not get offended. I am your guardian. Looking out for you comes with the territory.” He offered a smile. The rabbit crossed her arms defiantly, and his smirk faded to a weak quirk of his lips. LuLu hissed, “I do not need protection. I will win.” She felt her stomach churn despite whatever confident proclamation she was spewing. The sigel jumped when someone tapped against the window next to her head. Franco’s enthusiastic face greeted her just outside. He continued to rap against the window in a haphazard rhythm, encouraging her to get out. Josh was the first to poke his head out and protested the rough handling of his van. LuLu then shoved open the door energetically enough to knock the large man back. “You made it!” She chimed cheerily as she slipped from the van. The rabbit noticed Selene had settled in behind Franco. She waved to the woman. Selene nodded, “I would not miss it.” She held up a duffle bag. “I brought some extra supplies for you.” The bag piqued the girl’s interest but she could not come up with any guesses as to what it may contain given its plain exterior. It looked like any other black gym bag she had seen countless times in the past. The sigel moved to grab her red duffle from the back of the van. She slung it over her shoulder and closed the sliding door until she heard the click of it locking. She made it back to everyone just in time to hear Josh finishing his introduction to Franco and Selene. Having concluded their reception, the small troupe slid past the front entrance and around to the back of the building where the contenders entered. They were shuffled away into a small changing room barely large enough to contain the four of them pressed in shoulder to shoulder. The space was empty aside from a metal folding chair shoved away into a corner and a grungy looking mirror hanging from one of the graffiti covered walls. Accounting for the obvious lack of space, Josh decided to take his leave. LuLu’s guardian wished her luck and gave her shoulder a concerned squeeze before he departed to find a good seat in the audience. Shortly after, Selene booted Franco out so LuLu could change in peace. It left her alone with the rabbit. ---- LuLu had slipped into most of her gear within thirty minutes. Selene was offering assistance when she could which sped things along. They had already finished wrapping the sigel’s fists and securing her gloves. The binding was undoubtedly the older woman’s work. Precise like everything else she did. Lu flexed her fingers and felt just the right amount of give. Selene had also helped spread a thin layer of gel along the rabbit’s face. It was gooey and rested uncomfortably on her skin in a way that made her grimace whenever her nose crinkled. Lu found the step odd but she trusted the woman enough to put up with the application. Fortunately, small exchanges of conversation during the preparation allowed Lu to eventually forget about the greasy sensation altogether. The last step involved Selene pleating Lu’s blonde hair tightly against her head. Weathered fingers worked nimbly with years of experience. Lu felt Selene repeatedly tug against her scalp with a careful pressure. It was soothing and soon Lu’s head lulled back. Her trainer emitted a creaky laugh and tied off the last braid. “All done.” The sigel felt a pat against the back of her head. The rabbit looked at Selene’s handiwork in the mirror and was pleased to see her hair had been split into three neatly placed braids. It was the final polish to a look punctuated by sleekness and functionality. LuLu had never seen herself this way before. Her soft features had been honed over weeks of training and it was now accentuated by Selene’s diligent artistry. She looked fierce. Like a warrior awaiting the heat of battle. She exclaimed in awe, “It looks great.” LuLu spun around to face Selene. “Do I look ready?” She set her gloves on her hips. The woman smiled, “You tell me. Do you feel ready?” She quirked a brow at the girl. Just then, an announcement came through the door. ‘Ten minutes until you are on!’ LuLu’s confidence quickly plummeted like the floor had dropped out from beneath her. Her stomach was suddenly in knots. She drew in closer to Selene and whispered low on her breath. “Not really. What if I… what if I los-” She could not bring herself to say the words. Instead, her forehead sought purchase against the woman’s shoulder. Selene brusquely exclaimed, “I think I know what you are missing. I have just the thing.” An uncharacteristic tinge of excitement had bled into her voice. A hand brushed against Lu’s back before the woman’s body drew away. The sigel watched Selene unzip the black duffle bag she had brought in. The woman paused and turned to Lu. “Close your eyes until I say you can look.” The rabbit followed her instructions and shut her lavender eyes tightly. She heard some more rustling and then felt a light weight fall into her shoulders and along her arms. Selene croaked gently, “Open them.” Lu could not help but let out a gasp at what she saw. She was now swathed in a rich crimson robe that was completely drenched in sequins. She glanced at the breast of the wrap and noted the name ‘Scarlet’ was stitched in golden thread. Lu felt a flutter in her chest. She ran her glove over the embroidery just to make sure it was real. The rabbit murmured eagerly, “Is it really… yours?” Selene nodded. Lu could tell the woman was doing her best to hide a smirk. She replied, “It is yours now.” The rabbit’s breath hitched in her chest. All her troubles were forgotten in that moment. She twirled in place so that the sequins captured the dim glow in the room. It was dazzling, like watching stars glittering in the sky. She felt stunning and could not wait to see how she would look in the spotlight. The same spotlight that she had been dreading mere seconds ago now seemed like a welcomed friend. Selene snickered, “Now that you have the finishing touch. Are you feeling ready, Scarlet?” Pride washed over her as she donned the Star’s mantle. Her shoulders squared and a grin spread over her face. Win or lose, Lu would give her opponent one hell of a fight tonight. “It is show time.” Selene returned to Lu’s side and scooped the rabbit up into her arm. She gave her a tight squeeze. The woman boasted to the sigel, “You will knock ‘em dead.” She then pulled the hood of the robe over the rabbit’s head. “Now get out there.” ---- A set of thin double doors was the only thing blocking Lu from the ring outside. She could just make out the rumbling of the audience. They were shifting restlessly as the start of the match loomed ever closer. Her opponent was announced first. The hype man wasted no enthusiasm in talking the man up. “Good evening! Welcome to our main event folks. It is sure to be an exciting one. Of course, in the red corner, we have our local powerhouse. The undefeated heavyweight bruiser. The king of pain. Coming in at a rock solid 235 pounds! The Incredible Hulk!!” The crowd hissed with excitement as the man made his way to the ring. It was LuLu’s first time seeing her opponent. He looked more like a brick wall than any human she had seen before. The girl adjusted her hood so she could see his massive form more clearly. He was easily twice as wide across as Franco. The girl snorted, “The bigger they are, the harder they will fall.” That earned her a snicker from both Selene and Franco who were poised at her side. Her introduction was next. “And now presenting tonight’s challenger! Some of you might be familiar with this name. Give her a round of applause. Coming in at a dainty 135 pounds. The Scaaaaarlet Staaaaarlet!!!” LuLu had expected her own wave of cheers. However, the crowd fell silent when she exited from backstage. The rabbit was certain she could have heard a mouse sneeze as she approached the stage. The faces in the audience were contorted with awe and confusion as if they were seeing a ghost. LuLu did not let it deter her though. She offered the crowd a few playful swipes and fake punches. The rabbit climbed the steps to the ring and slipped her petite body through the ropes. She spun so her robe coiled around her and then pulled the hood down to reveal herself to the spectators. The silence was broken by a loud boo. Then, someone threw a bottle at the ring. Lu dodged to the side a narrowly avoided it. She could hear the jeers and taunts erupting from the crowd. “Who is this poser?” “Why the hell would they let some brat in the ring?” “What were they thinking?” The rabbit had heard enough. She slung her robe off and tossed it to Franco. The man caught it with a surprised yelp. She quickly made her way over to the announcer center stage and grabbed the mic from him. “Hey!” Her stern voice cut through the insults like a red hot blade. “Shut your mouths! Hold your opinion until the end. You will see a miracle. Scarlet Starlet is back from the dead! And, will defeat your champion!” She returned the mic back to the announcer and focused her gaze back on her opponent. The Hulk was appraising her with a broad grin and crooked teeth. He seemed amused by her threat. The man approached the center of the ring with three inhumanly long strides. He looked even larger now that he was up close and personal. LuLu could smell cheap cologne, smoke, and body odor wafting from him. She had to fight the urge to cover her nose. He growled deep and low, “I will crush you, little girl.” The announcer gulped loudly and resumed his rehearsed lines. Though, they came out a bit shakier than before. “Y-you know the rules! No cheap shots. Return to your corners so we can start.” LuLu spent each second she could staring daggers at the Hulk from down the bridge of her nose before she strode back to her corner. She would wipe the smirk off his face, and show the audience just who they should be cheering for. The bell rung with two clear dings to signal the start of the match. The Hulk made the first move. He lurched forward towards LuLu, but the girl escaped his reach with her deft speed. He continued his advance and LuLu never missed a step of her choreographed dance around the brute. She had practiced with the best. Lu knew things would go well if she played this match smart like Selene. Her trainer had taken out countless men like this in her prime. LuLu was certain she could do the same. The first step was tiring him out. All she had to do for now was stay out of his way. The first three rounds went by with very little action. The Hulk gave chase and sought to land a crippling blow on the rabbit, but it never made contact. She was too quick. By the end of the fourth round, Lu noticed he was starting to breathe heavier. Sweat was dripping from his brow like a waterfall and his face was flushed with effort. She decided she would go on the offensive in the next round. LuLu shot forward like a sling shot at the same time the bell for the fifth round rang. Her fist drew back then collided with the Hulk’s right side. He doubled over and, for that moment, she thought she had him. However, she quickly realized her mistake as The Hulk enclosed his arms around her. She had not worn him out enough before springing her trap. He had recovered faster than she was expecting, and now she was in his clutches. The audience exploded into hoots and hollers when the Hulk threw her into a corner of the ring. He had her right where he wanted her. His bulk blocked off any escape she could hope for. His glove connected her face again and again until stars shot across her vision. The ref pulled the Hulk away in time for the fifth round to end. LuLu wobbled to her corner of the ring. She could taste iron in her mouth and was certain she was bleeding from her nose. The ref tried to say something to her, but LuLu could not make out the words. The rabbit’s wits still had not returned to her. Everything was drowned out by ringing in her ears and the thump of blood pumping in her head. Her eyes snapped wide open when a wave of cold water doused her. She squeaked in disapproval, but was relieved that the impromptu bath had shocked back into the here and now. Franco, Josh, and Selene had gathered near her. Each one was trying to speak over the other and all their voices spun together into a raucous din. “Congrats on your first legitimate black eye! Now go return the favor!” “Take a breath. Regroup. You still have this match. You have felt worse.” “Lu! What the hell! You are hurt! Stop this craziness!” LuLu cut them all off with a vicious glower. Josh was all too familiar with that look and was the first to slink away from her. Both Franco and Selene soon followed his example. The sigel rolled her shoulders before cracking her neck and wings. She declared resolutely. “I am not going to run home after the first punch.” She would not make a fool of herself in her first match by throwing in the towel this early. So, she had slipped-up. It was now time for her to get serious and stop playing around. She seethed between her clenched teeth, “I will end him.” The golden tattoos lining her eyes shifted to a deep Scarlet and bled down her cheeks into two thick streaks. The bell for the sixth round sounded. The Hulk was also ready to end this match. He stomped towards the girl with clunky movements and fists swinging. LuLu slipped past his first punch and countered by landing a blow to his right side. She aimed right where he was already bruising from her previous hit. Then, her other fist struck shortly after. She felt air escape the man’s lungs. He sputtered, but the rabbit backed off instead of going in for a third attack. She circled just out of his range and goaded the Hulk on. “Come crush me, loser. I am right here. Come get me!” She could see the veins in the man’s temples throbbing under his skin. He was broiling with rage. The Hulk snarled and stomped his feet before he came after her again. This was what she had been waiting for. LuLu flared her wings and dodged away from his blow. She saw the perfect opening. Her glove collided squarely with his chin and she heard the crunch of bone breaking. The Hulk fell back with a dull thud that made the whole canvas quake. He did note move aside from labored breathing. A hush fell over the crowd. The announcer came over the speakers with uncertainty coloring his tone, “T-the champion was defeated by… a total knockout!” A cheer then erupted through the whole venue. Soon a chant built up volume as it spread across the crowd. “Scarlet! SCARLET! SCARLET!!!” Now that was the cheer she had been expecting! LuLu took a bow in the center of the stage. She then turned to Franco, Selene, and Josh before she took another one. The trio seized the ring and joined the rabbit in a group hug. The sigel squirmed in their arms and giggled, “I told you I would do it.” Franco chuckled, “You really gave them a show.” Selene scoffed, “I knew you could.” Josh tolled hesitantly, “G-good work, Lu.” LuLu’s first match had been a success in many ways and was the start of something much, much more exciting. The Mysterious BenefactorWho: LuLu and Samuel When: Mid-morning Where: Local Cafe in Barton Weather: Fall Status: Complete Post-note:It was a quiet day at Lu’s favorite coffee shop. Though it was already noon, only a handful of people had stumbled their way into the café. Upon pilfering their preferred source of caffeine, most of the patrons quickly found their way back outside. The sigel was one of a small handful of customers who stuck around to finish their beverage. She had settled into a back corner of the shop and had already purchased her own sugary concoction of the day, a mix of mocha and a peppermint swirl. She absentmindedly took another sip from her cup as she used her other hand to manage her phone. She had an online article opened and was crawling through it. Her first victory made enough of a stir to earn her an commentary in one of Durem’s local newspapers. It was a brief editorial, only a few paragraphs at the most, that appraised her performance and congratulated the underdog’s victory. It concluded with a question to the audience of what was to come from the new Starlet’s budding career. LuLu smiled to herself. Even she did not yet know the answer to that. All she had determined for now was that she was not ready to stop. LuLu’s ears perked when she heard the clatter of a chair near her. It was an unmistakable squeal of metal legs being pulled closer. The sigel drew her lavender eyes away from her phone. “Oh!” She was a bit surprised to see a man seated across from her. The man was in his late thirties to early forties judging by the wrinkles creasing his brow and the corners of his eyes. His icy blue irises were complemented by his fair complexion and pale blonde hair. The flaxen strands were clipped short and slicked back. Not a strand strayed from place aside from a single deliberate curl. He wore a crisp blue suit who’s every seam was perfectly tailored and pressed. A dried rose pinned to his lapel was the only thing that seemed discordant, the dusky red being a contrast to the swathes of rich cobalt. His fingers were laced together and perched atop the table just under his chin. LuLu could not help but notice the gilded cufflinks resting on his wrists. Two identical S’s gleamed in the overhead lights. The corners of the man’s mouth slowly drew into a gentle smile. He greeted the rabbit, “Hello, Scarlet.” He addressed her in an even tone with his rich voice. The use of her stage name piqued the girl’s interest further. She inquired, “Hello. Can I help you, Sir?” LuLu set her phone aside and gave her full attention to the striking man. Her own fingers curled on the table. He responded with words so measured it was as though they were picked just for her, “Yes, you can. In fact, only you can. I came here for you Scarlet.” He eased forward in his seat. “I saw your performance in Durem. It was fascinating. One may even say exquisite.” His smile grew wider until a flash of teeth appeared from behind his lips. “I would love to see more of your performances. I am hosting an event in the next few weeks. I think you will find it to be a good opportunity.” The man produced a neatly enclosed envelop from his coat’s breast pocket and held it out to the sigel. LuLu reached out to pluck the paper from his hand. She found a slight resistance as his fingers held onto it just a moment longer than needed before he released it to the girl. She unfolded the bundle and skimmed over the advertisement. Her jaw fell open. It was an invitation to the event Franco had been going on and on about. It was THE match of the season and the prize money for winning was exorbitant. LuLu glanced up at the man. He was the one hosting it? Well, that explained the fancy suit. The sigel inquired, “Thank you, but… what do I have to do?” She was waiting for the catch to this deal. It was uncommon to have something this good handed to you without there being some hidden cost. The man nodded, “Very astute, but all you have to do is show up and give a good show. Everyone will be watching, including me. I will be very invested in your performance.” The man rose from his seat, “I look forward to it, Scarlet.” He withdrew from the table and made his exit. LuLu watched as a tall bodyguard enrobed in a pitch black suit greeted the mystery man and led him away to an expensive looking car. He looked to be speaking over an earpiece the entire time. The girl looked back down at the invitation in her hands. She ran a thumb over the thick cardstock and read the embossed signature concluding the letter. “Samuel.” She was certain this wouldn’t be the last time they crossed paths. The man had made that very clear. SOLO

A Test of FaithWho: LuLu and Samuel (mentions of Selene, Franco, and Josh) When: Evening Where: Gambino Stadium Weather: Fall Status: Complete Post-note:The time leading up to the event sped by in the blink of an eye. Weeks of training bled together and before LuLu even realized it the day had come. She had spent her morning at Knockout gym hoping it would provide a good distraction. As the sun began to set, Franco told her to pack her things away and offered to drive her to the venue. LuLu had confided in him that Josh had been adamant about not attending this match after what he had witnessed when she went up against The Hulk. Though her guardian had wished her good luck, he could not condone chauffeuring her to a place where he knew she would end up being hurt. Regardless, it was only a minor inconvenience to LuLu. The sigel was actually relieved when Josh decided not to show. It was one less thing to worry about during the night. She did not need her guardian getting on his soapbox again about how she was childish for putting herself into danger. Of course, she understood that this was a dangerous situation. She was not blind. LuLu knew would be up against some tough competitors, people who had made a name for themselves and garnered Samuel’s attention. That would not be enough to scare her away, however. She had made a name for herself, too. Though it was a hand-me-down, she had breathed life back into the moniker that Selene had left behind. The Scarlet Starlet was back and better than ever. The community was abuzz with intrigue. The event would be taking place at Gambino Stadium. It was an enormous venue usually reserved for functions with notoriety. When she was confronted by a sea of cars in the parking lot, LuLu was certain every seat had been booked out. Anyone who had heard word of recent events in boxing would likely be in attendance. Samuel had ensured the event would be something to behold. Eight boxers would enter the stadium and be pitted against one another in a tournament style competition. One champion would remain at the end of the night. Each match was capped at five rounds in the interest of time and to preserve some of the participant’s stamina. Three matches in one night would be difficult for anyone to complete. Still, despite the hand she was dealt, LuLu had to give it her all in each fight. The rabbit’s goal had been to dish out more punishment than she received and, so far, she had been fairly successful in her mission. She had passed through her first two bouts with a KO and a technical victory. The raevan had added to her collection of battle wounds a busted brow, a tear on the tip of her ear, and bruises peppered along her forearms. Fortunately, her opponent was in no better shape. The willowy man sitting across from her was sporting a deeply cut cheek, a swollen eye, and a set of bruises along both sides of his ribs. In spite of the damage, they were prepared for a fight. This was the final match and they were both ready to pull out all the stops. Her opponent’s nickname was “The Phantom Punch”. LuLu was knew just what he had done to earn the epithet. She had managed to sneak a peek at one of his previous fights during the night. This man was an out-boxer to his core. His technique was formed of coordinated evasion and well placed jabs to earn points while taking minimal damage. All of his victories so far had been technical wins. She watched attentively as he warmed up for their skirmish. The Phantom’s movements were fluid as he rolled his arms forwards and back in smooth, even circles. His muscles were stretched like thin cords over his lanky frame. The sigel concluded that he was built differently from other adversaries she had faced. For once, LuLu had an advantage in speed and power. That would not be enough for this challenger, however. This would be a battle of both brains and brawn. The rabbit would also have to think quicker than him if she wanted to stay on top. It would certainly be a new challenge for her to overcome. LuLu leaned back into her corner. Selene and Franco were at her side. She felt a damp rag brush along the gash on her temple. The girl closed her eyes and focused on the cool sensation. As she drifted off, she heard a few murmurs of encouragement from either one of her trainers. She was pretty sure it was the same few sentences over and over, but it had been her rhythm for the night. She would finish a round then return to her stool for a few blissful moments of reprieve before the next round started. Rinse and repeat. The sigel had lost track of just how many rounds she had been through this night. One thing had been difficult to lose track of though. The raevan opened her eyes and directed them towards the audience. Even now she could feel Samuel’s stare burning into her from a VIP section in the front row. It had been an insistent presence from the very second she had stepped into the ring. He had made it no secret during their first meeting that he would be judging her performance. His heavy gaze was like a constant pressure weighing on her. She wondered idly if he liked the show she had giving him so far. Did he believe she would make it to the final round or did she give the composed man a shock? Her lips curled at the idea. Regardless of his opinion, the rabbit was pleased to see that she had won favor with the spectators over the course of her matches. Each over her victories had concluded with an encouraging chant. Leading up to the final event, the entire crowd was churning with restless energy. An announcer stepping into the ring signaled to everyone that things were about to take off. The crowd erupted into cheering. She rose up and gave the crowd a bow before she approached center stage. She faced The Phantom with a smile. When the announcer finished and stepped away, she lingered. LuLu chimed to her opponent, “Watch your ribs.” She offered him a condescending wink before returning to her corner for the start of the first round. The bell came to life with three consecutive rings. Both contenders eased into the fight, equally gauging each other. The Phantom spiked a few jabs at The Starlet which she dodged. Likewise, he avoided a few of her strikes. With thirty seconds left LuLu became bolder. She closed the distance going in for a bigger move and attempting to set the tone for the match. However, she miscalculated the punch. The sigel merely grazed his shoulder and was left open for a series of rabbit punches to her head. The wound on her brow re-opened and a fresh surge of blood dribbled into her eye. The bell signaled the end of the first round. The audience was going wild. The raevan hissed under her breath as she returned to her corner. LuLu realized she had made a mistake that would cost her for the rest of the match. Selene was already trying her best to clean up the gash, but the bleeding was not letting up. The girl blinked against the stinging in her eye, courtesy of the blood already there. Its vision was now bleary at best. She would need to come up with a better plan if she was going to last the next four rounds. However, time was not on her side as the bell chimed for the second round to begin. The Phantom was showing off some impressively quick footwork. Meanwhile, LuLu was being mindful of her limited vision and not getting cornered again. It sharply impacted her offensive ability and, ultimately, the second match concluded with little action between the two of them aside from a few superficial hits. The third and fourth rounds went by in a similar fashion. However, in time for the fifth and final round, things were looking up for the rabbit. Her wound had finally clotted off and her vision was back. LuLu was ready to turn the tides. The bell for the fifth round chimed. LuLu emerged from her corner like someone possessed. Her fighting spirit was ravenous to the point that even her tattoos reflected the hunger. They were deep scarlet and wound down her neck and both her arms. She wasted no time in closing the distance between them. It was all or nothing now! The Phantom also realized this and went in for a counterstrike of his own. LuLu easily sidestepped the straight he swung at her and squeezed in close. Her fist then connected with his side. She growled out between clenched teeth, “What did I say!” Another hit collided with his side. Then another. The Phantom sputtered. His body was not made for such an impact, especially not multiple hits of that magnitude. His knees buckled and he fell to the ground. If the referee had not pulled her away, LuLu likely would have ended the man with a brutal hook to the jaw. The Phantom could count his graces that he would be leaving with only a few shattered ribs. The rabbit huffed and puffed a few feet away as she waited for the count to end. “Eight… nine… ten! It’s over!” The referee shouted over the roaring audience. It was official. She had done it! The rabbit cried out along with the crowd, “YES!” Her arms pumped in victory. ---- LuLu celebrated her triumph backstage with a homemade carrot cake, compliments of Selene. It was not quite up to par with what she could buy from her favorite café. Nevertheless, it was the thought that counted. LuLu was pleased that the woman had remembered her favorite snack and thankful for a treat following her hard earned victory. The sigel’s mind was buzzing from the sugar within minutes. In fact, the whole trio was wired from a combination of the cake and the night’s conclusion. The only thing that could pull Selene and Franco from the rabbit’s side was the need to put her gear away. Her trainers told her to stay put in her dressing room and promised to return within a few minutes. After a minute or two, the rabbit heard a knock at the door. She answered the door and was surprised by who greeted her. It was Samuel. Just behind him was the bodyguard from before. Now that LuLu had a closer look she could see just how tall the other man was. Surpassing even The Hulk, his form nearly took up the entire door frame and over shadowed Samuel. She looked away from his bodyguard and re-focused her attention on the event’s host. She welcomed him in, “Hello.” After a moment, she questioned softly, “How did you like the performance?” The man’s stoic features melted into a good-humored smile. “It was breathtaking, Scarlet. It was your best yet.” He stepped into her dressing room. The rabbit finally noticed the large bouquet of roses he had in tow. Her head tilted curiously as Samuel placed them on a vanity in her room. “A gift for the champion.” He pulled out a single stem from the cluster and held it out to the raevan. The girl plucked it carefully from his grasp, “Thank you.” She dipped her nose down to partake in its sweetly floral scent. LuLu inquired, “Will you be holding any other competitions?” Her gaze perked towards him. The man chuckled huskily then continued in a gentle purr, “No, I do not think I will.” The rabbit’s expression fell a bit at his answer. This was one of the toughest competitions she had ever been a part of. LuLu felt it had been a true measure of her abilities. It was a bit disheartening knowing it would not happen again. Samuel continued his explanation upon seeing her dejection, “I have been hosting these events to find something I had been missing. But, I have found it now. I would prefer to focus my energy now on making sure I never lose it again.” LuLu did not completely understand his justification. However, she supposed she would also do the same if she had found something she had been searching a long while for. The rabbit’s ears perked when Samuel’s bodyguard cleared his throat. The large man signaled that Franco and Selene were approaching. Samuel offered a nod. He glanced back at Lu then at the bouquet on the table. “I should let you return to your celebration. You will find your prize check in there, too. Congratulations on your win, Scarlet.” He departed with a smile. SOLO

The Cost of FreedomWho: LuLu and Samuel (mentions of Josh) When: Afternoon Where: Barton Weather: Fall Status: Complete Post-note:LuLu awoke the following morning to a shrill screeching echoing in her ears. It was a cacophonous mix of a hangover and Joshua trying his best to scold her out of her stupor. In all fairness, the boy had found her passed out in the bathroom. She was slumped up against the toilet and covered in too many bruises to count…. And possibly some vomit. The situation likely warranted some chastising from her guardian. However, the rabbit wanted no part in it given her current state and how close she was to dry heaving again. She looked up at Josh with bloodshot eyes. “What do you waaaaant?” Her sentence ended in an irritated hiss. She clutched at her temples and attempted to rub her headache away. Of course, it did not work completely. The unbearable hammering only subsided to a reasonable pounding. Regardless, she could at least make out what the boy was saying now. Josh continued his admonishment. “What the hell happened?! You smell like booze and look like crap.” He grabbed the girl by the arm and started to help her up. LuLu frowned at his description but replied, “I had a good night. It is just the morning that sucks.” She swatted his hands away. “I can do it myself.” She gripped onto a nearby counter tightly and slowly found her footing. If the girl had legs, they would likely be wobbling. She grunted as she worked her way back up to her full height. Josh continued, “A good night? Getting beaten senseless and then drinking the pain away? I cannot let you keep doing this, Lu.” The boy gulped audibly. “That’s it! I am putting my foot down. No more boxing!” The rabbit responded with an irritated snort. “Good luck stopping me.” The boy’s mouth swung open in shock at her threat. She brushed past him as she exited the bathroom. If not for her bad mood, LuLu might have laughed at the goofy look on his face. She began to muster up the energy to cross the apartment and change her crumpled clothes. By the time Josh recovered from his surprise, she was already halfway to her room. The boy quickly broke from his freeze and bounded over to LuLu before she could finish her route. He gritted out, “How can you say that!? I have done so much for you! I am practically your parent!” Josh sounded frantic. That was it! LuLu spun around and spat out bitterly, “You are not my parent.” She growled, “You are a guardian who I might have needed one when I was a newborn.” The rabbit straightened up and narrowed her eyes, “I am nine years old now, goddammit. I do not need you looming over me anymore.” She jabbed a manicured nail to his chest. “******** drop it.” The rabbit floated into her room and slammed the door behind her. There was some rustling on the other side of the door, and within a few minutes the raevan poked her head back out. She looked a little more presentable now. Her hair was done in a messy bun that feigned the effortless look that was popular nowadays. To finish off the deception, she threw on an oversized sweater and a pair of sunglasses. She mumbled to her guardian, “I am going out.” The girl glanced over her shoulder when she was addressed by a long silence. The boy looked like he wanted to say something, but no words left his mouth. Instead, he wore a pained expression that reminded Lu of someone who was constipated. The raevan rolled her eyes. She was not going to feel sorry for him. Josh had brought this upon himself by picking at the subject over and over again. LuLu was more amazed she had not blown up at him sooner. ---- LuLu decided she needed a dose of sugar improve her mood. It was the only chance she had at rescuing her miserable morning. In the span of an hour, the rabbit had arrived at her favorite café and was already working on a second slice of cake. She was also nursing a hot chocolate in their largest size available. The kilogram of sweets she had consumed was already working wonders for her. The sigel popped another bite of confection into her mouth with a pleased hum. “Ah, you appear to be enjoying yourself.” A man’s voice interrupted her from her sugar high. The rabbit instantly recognized who it was from their articulate way of speaking and silky tone. LuLu set her fork back down on her plate and met Samuel’s gaze through her sunglasses. The man looked a bit out of place in the humble shop. He was swathed in yet another designer suit and overcoat. His dried rose pin was tucked into place neatly. She responded delicately, “Umm, yes. They have a good bakery. I come here a lot, actually.” She could not stop one of her blond brows form quirking. She was still surprised to see a man like Samuel in place like this. Samuel noted her prying gaze and commented casually, “Barton has some of the best bakeries in Gaia. I heard about this café just recently. Though, it seems like it has been here for quite a while.” He held up a paper bag with the shop’s logo printed upon it. “Many people recommended their croissants to me. Do you mind if I join you? I purchased extra.” LuLu nodded towards an open seat. “Not at all.” She offered him a smile. It was refreshing to learn that Samuel was not the type of person who shuttled pastry chefs by private jet. Though, the rabbit had no doubts he was capable of such a feat. She watched intently as the man brushed off his suit then took a seat next to her. He took care in opening up the paper bag and retrieving two croissants from it. He offered one of the flaky pastries to LuLu. She seized it graciously and waited for Samuel to secure his before she sampled it along with him. Her eyes lit up instantly after the first bite, “So good!” She could not help but squeak in joy. Samuel chuckled, “It is very delicious.” He set down the rest of his portion. His icy eyes focused back on LuLu. “I am glad I stumbled upon you here, Scarlet. I wanted to ask your something.” The sigel’s ears perked at the nickname. She interjected quickly, “You can call me LuLu. That is my real name.” She figured Samuel had earned at least that information. After all, he had played some part in helping LuLu rescue Knockout from its crushing debt. The man’s lips curled. “LuLu, hm?” He stroked a hand over his chin. “Do you mind if I continue to call you Scarlet?” He leaned in closer. “My apologies, the name suits a stunning and formidable woman like you so well. Please consider it a compliment.” His words were so sincere that LuLu felt a bit of color tinge her cheeks at his flattery. After a moment of thought, she agreed. “Sure.” It did not feel right stopping Samuel from using it. After all, she had revived the name through her hard work. She might as well get some mileage out of it. She returned to their previous conversation, “So, did you have business with me?” Samuel tapped his fingers on the table. “Not really business, per say. It is more of a proposition for you.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “It is no secret to you that I am very impressed by your abilities in the ring. They were astonishing.” The rabbit titled her head curiously wondering where the conversation was heading. “I would like to extend to you a very special position on my guard. I will have tasks for you every now and again. It will be nothing too difficult. In exchange, I can promise you anything you desire.” His blue eyes never wavered as he made his offer known to the rabbit. LuLu was incredulous. Anything she desired? It was a very bold offer, but the man appeared confident in his capability to follow up on his deal. Of course, there were things LuLu wanted that the man could most certainly promise. LuLu had to wonder at what cost though. The thought of being indebted to Samuel, no matter how nice he seemed, left a sour taste in her mouth. The rabbit did not respond well to her freedom being restricted. Josh learned this lesson the hard way today. The sigel could not accept this deal lightly. Samuel had already provided LuLu with enough to ensure that Selene and Franco would be comfortable. It would be greedy to take anymore from the man. LuLu knew all too well that greed had a tendency to lead her into precarious positions. She could not accept in her right mind. The rabbit diverted her amethyst eyes as she gave her answer to Samuel. “Thank you for the offer, but I must decline. I have everything I want right now.” The rabbit felt like adding the comment ‘aside from an annoying guardian’ but decided against it. She did not need to reel Samuel into her drama at home. She heard Samuel shift in his seat. “Really. Everything?” The corners of his mouth had fallen into a soft frown. He was contemplating something. After a moment he continued, “You are a clever woman, Scarlet. I know it is a big decision to make. My proposal still stands. Please, continue to think on it.” He stood up from his seat. “It was a pleasure, as always.” Samuel swiftly took his leave out of the café. His exit was so hasty that it was a moment before Lu noticed he left his bag of croissants behind. The sigel’s nose twitched. How unusual. SOLO

Date NightWho: LuLu and Franco, LuLu and Samuel (later) When: Afternoon Where: Barton Weather: Fall Status: Complete Post-note:It was the first time in a long while that LuLu could stretch out on the couch to enjoy some sweet, sweet solitude. No training. No work appointments. It was just her and a whole day of nowhere to be. The rabbit was busying herself with flipping through channels on the television aimlessly. Her head hung off the cushions with her neck craned back so she could watch the screen. She paused on an infomercial to enjoy the gimmicky announcer before she passed onto the next wave of stations. It was the perfect way to spend a lazy Saturday morning. A knock on the door caught her attention. She blinked in its direction for a moment and the second knock finally jarred her from her haze. The girl called out to her guardian, “I got it!” She rolled over and lifted herself from the sofa. She tried to list off potential visitors in her head, but no one really came to mind. The sigel certainly had not invited anyone over for a play date. The rabbit squinted through the door’s peephole. She was surprised to see Franco’s broad frame blocking out most of the view. LuLu quickly smoothed a hand over her hair to tame some of its frizz. She undid the door’s deadbolt and poked her head out. She greeted Franco with a sly smile, “In the neighborhood?” Her smirk broadened, “Or, did you want to see me especially today?” She leaned her body against the doorframe as she awaited his response. The man offered her a cheeky grin, “I needed to get a good laugh so I decided to stop by. You delivered. Isn’t it a little late in the day for PJ’s?” He nodded towards the girl’s pink nightshirt. LuLu flushed as her hand instinctively moved to cover up the slogan printed on it. She managed to conceal some of the design. Still, in spite of her best effort, it was easy to read ‘Gym Bunny’ embellished across her chest. She eventually gave up hiding the design altogether. With a frustrated sigh she decided it was best to own the look so Franco could not leech anymore amusement from her embarrassment. She shifted her weight to one of her hips and shot him a pout, “I earned a day off from saving your butt. If you have a problem, take it to the complaints department.” The rabbit ended her sentence by stamping a fist into the palm of her hand. Franco was beyond overjoyed that the rabbit had used one of his own lines against him. He leaned forward and ruffled her hair with one of his large hands, “Good one.” The man decided to drop their game, much to LuLu’s relief, and started to pursue a more earnest conversation. “No complaints here, Lu. I actually want to thank you for all you have done for Selene and me lately. How about an afternoon around town? I will take you anywhere you want to go. Just us.” His green eyes glinted playfully. LuLu’s confident expression shifted to one of bewilderment at his last words. She squeaked enthusiastically, “Yes!” By this point, her ears were standing on end with excitement. She held out a hand against Franco’s chest. “W-wait here! I will be right back.” The girl hastily shut the door on the man. LuLu suddenly felt weak. She pressed her forehead against the wood entryway and tried to center herself, but her whole body was trembling. She could not believe this was happening right now. At last, all of her flirting had finally passed through Franco’s thick skull. She had almost thought he was a lost cause. Yet, here she was. It was a date! Franco had finally asked her out on a date! The rabbit returned her attention to her pitiful appearance. This was no time to be in pajamas! She had to find an outfit to wear, fast! The sigel pulled her oversized shirt over her head in one fluid movement and tossed it over the back of the couch. Her buck naked torso was on display as she floated at top speed across the living room and towards her closet. LuLu heard some dishes clatter in the nearby kitchen. Josh cried after her, “Clothes! You need to wear clothes in the apartment! Why do I need to keep telling you this!?” The rest of his sputtering fell on deaf ears as the rabbit passed him by. She had more important business to take care of; for instance, if she should brave wearing a dress despite the chilly fall weather. After a few minutes of contemplation, the girl settled on a warmer alternative. She shrugged into a sweater with a few well place cut outs in the fabric and a light jacket to go over it. She glanced in the mirror and adjusted her tattoos a bit to add a little extra oomph to her eyes and lips. Her hair was quickly pleated into a loose braid and the look was as complete as it was going to get. Around ten minutes had already ticked by and she could not let her date wait any longer. ---- The two had gotten close enough that Franco knew her interests to a T. He had started things off on a positive note by taking LuLu out for some sweets. It was something light for them to enjoy and also served to fuel them up for the fun ahead. The man had prearranged a full day of romping outside in the dusting of snow covering Barton. The plan perfectly suited the girl. Time seemed moved faster when the two were together. A whole afternoon went by in what felt like a few fleeting moments. The date had gone well in LuLu’s opinion. So well enough that she wished to drag on the one day for weeks so she could enjoy each and every second for as long as her heart desired. The rabbit breathed a warm puff of air into the palms of her hands. The digits were starting to become numb in the cold. They had been outside for hours by now, and it was starting to show. A shiver ran through her and ended at the base of her spine. Franco took notice. He grasped one of her hands in his own and tucked her small fist into the pocket of his jacket. LuLu gasped softly. She flexed her fingers instinctively against the warm confines. He commented, “Let’s get you out of the cold.” The man then guided them towards a bench shielded from the wind. He took a seat then motioned for her to do the same. LuLu settled in beside him. Franco inquired, “Besides being a little frozen, are you having fun?” The rabbit nodded. “I will warm up.” Her hand squeezed his a little tighter underneath his coat’s fabric. “It has been wonderful, nearly perfect.” LuLu’s voice lowered. “It is only missing one thing.” She bumped her shoulder against his to get the man’s attention. The rabbit turned her head to face Franco and at the same time he chose to look down at her. He was so close that she could clearly make out the hazel buried in his green irises. She felt a magnetizing energy between then. She began to lean in. Or, maybe it was Franco moving in. Either way, the distance was quickly narrowing. Her eyes fluttered shut just before their lips brushed together. Time seemed to melt away once again as she rested her mouth on his. The kiss sent a shock through each of her nerves. It was warm and soft in just the right ways, like a cozy blanket hugging against her. LuLu barely noticed her cold hands anymore now that her whole body was warmed from within. She felt a hand seek purchase on her shoulder. His long fingers tightened briefly on her skin. Then, Franco gently pulled her away. LuLu could not help the frustrated grunt she released when their kiss was ended all too soon. Once their mouths were free, the man started chuckling. LuLu tilted her head in confusion. Franco’s hand was now covering his face so the girl could not make out his expression. She finally asked, “What is so funny?” Though, she really did not understand the joke. She let out an uneasy giggle herself. Franco moved his hand away. He was still laughing, but his eyes looked so uncertain and fearful. When he spoke his usual bright tone had dulled to a faint whisper. “I dunno what I am doing, LuLu.” His snickering started to sound more like desperation than amusement. “It…. feels like a just kissed my little sister or something. You know?” The man shrugged helplessly. LuLu blinked slowly as his words sunk in. “What?” Her mind was digesting them slowly and working frantically to comprehend them. “What are you saying?” The rabbit pulled her hand out from his pocket and her fists began to clench. Franco shook his head and looked away. “I did not mean to lead you on. s**t. You do not know any better. I should have had more control. s**t, s**t, s**t. ” He sighed, a deep guttural exhale. “I shouldn’t have kissed you. I shouldn’t have kissed you.” He kept repeating the sentence over and over again. Each time it left his mouth LuLu found that she grew angrier. She finally snapped. The sigel screeched, “Stop it! Stop saying that!” She grabbed the man by his stubbled chin and reeled him in roughly. “I am not a stupid child. You did not charm me or lead me. I chose to kiss you. I wanted to.” Her eyes narrowed. “You can’t handle that choice. But, I can.” She wound her fist back like she was ready to punch the man. However, she could not bring herself to land the blow. Her arm fell to her side limply. “******** you!” She left the man on the bench so he could recover from his shock unaccompanied. ---- LuLu floated down the sidewalk and created distance between herself and Franco. With each passing block, she felt the tension in her shoulders ease. But the slack in her muscles did not bring her any relief. Instead, she felt a new pressure building just behind her eyeballs. She blinked a few times as her vision became hazy. The sigel rubbed away the first wave of tears and mumbled, “Stupid jerk.” The rabbit jump when a car’s horn honked at her. She looked around to make sure she was not doing something stupid while she was distracted like trying to cross a busy street. LuLu was even more confused when she noted the road was a few safe feet away from her. Her attention was drawn to a sleek black sedan pulling up onto the curve. It stopped just short of her and honked again. “The hell?” The girl mouthed to herself. LuLu tried to peek through one if its tinted windows but it was too opaque to make out anything meaningful. The pitch black window in the back passenger’s seat suddenly slid down with a mechanical whirr. Unexpectedly, Samuel’s face greeted her. LuLu waved feebly from her spot on the walkway and tried to clean away the rest of her tears quickly. He appeared to be his usual immaculate self. Except, his generally stoic expression was replaced with one of concern. The rabbit had not seen his brows drawn together so deeply, yet. The man’s normally rich voice creaked as he asked, “What is wrong?” Samuel looked like he was holding something back. His cold blue eyes held the intensity of an ice storm. As though, he really wanted to ask ‘who did this to you’. The sigel looked away from his heavy gaze. “N-nothing. You do not have to worry over it. It is my concern.” Her wings fluttered as she began to take her leave. “Have a good evening Samu-” The man asserted, “Please, do not leave!” He was already halfway out of his car by the time LuLu’s gaze returned to him. He marched after her and continued, “It is freezing out. I can at least give you a ride home.” He motioned towards the car’s opened door. After a moment of thought, the rabbit conceded. She could not deny that with the sunlight outside fading it was only getting colder and colder. A warm ride in a luxury car definitely sounded more appealing that a trudge through the slush. She slipped past Samuel and into the car. The rabbit was briefly distracted by the interior of the vehicle. It was a large expanse of lavish leather that dripped with opulence. As if Lu was not already certain that the man was loaded, the crystal whiskey decanter and matching shot glasses stowed away were the final clue. Samuel slid into the car behind her and shut the door with a soft click. He called to the driver, “Turn up the heat.” He turned to the sigel. “Where are we driving to, Scarlet?” LuLu gave her address to the driver and settled into her fine, likely Italian crafted, seat. The drive was relatively quiet for the first few minutes. LuLu was still distracted by thoughts of Franco and was not interested much in conversation. Samuel was the first to break the stretch of silence. “Forgive me for being forward. Misery is not becoming of you, Scarlet.” The rabbit then realized just how scrunched up her face had become while she was lost in her own head. She started to apologize but the man interjected, “It is not my concern, but I want to know what could bring a woman such as you to tears. I can see it is weighing on you. Perhaps, I can share some of that burden.” LuLu had tried to spare Samuel from the drama in her life, but the man seemed determined to impose himself. It was still a good fifteen minute driver to Josh’s apartment and the rabbit did not have the energy to keep dodging the subject. She decided that offering him a little information would not hurt anything. In fact, the man was probably right in that sharing her plight might relieve some of her suffering. The sigel began, “Franco and I had a date today. Our first. Well, maybe I was the only one who thought it was a date.” Samuel inquired, “Franco? He is one of the trainers you registered with, correct? The tall man with green eyes.” He seemed contemplative as her recalled the other man. LuLu bobbed her head. “Yes. That is Franco.” The girl frowned. “The date was going so well. He was enjoying it, too. Until, I kissed him. He freaked out. He said it was like kissing his sister.” There was a soft thunk as she set her head against the door’s window. “What is that even supposed to mean?” he felt tears welling up in her eyes again Samuel did not miss a beat in replying. “It sounds like a boy who is uncertain about what he wants and lost control of the situation. It is unfortunate his indecision broke your heart.” LuLu pulled away from the window and looked at Samuel. He offered her a handkerchief from his breast pocket and continued, “You are different, Scarlet. You know what you want and you let nothing stop you from attaining it.” The sigel took the handkerchief and dabbed at her eyes. She contemplated his words. An ability to appear in control was not innate to LuLu. Decisiveness was something she had cultivated in herself after meeting Selene, and it was just one of many talents she had developed over the past year. Though, it felt good having it recognized by Samuel she could not help but wonder if it had scared Franco away. She pouted, “I came on too strongly then.” Samuel shook his head and a gentle smile fell on his face. “Franco does not see what you are. You are tenacious and powerful. If he cannot handle that, he is a child who does not deserve your time.” LuLu’s ears perked. Samuel was the first person to acknowledge her maturity. Josh saw her as a daughter to protect while Selene saw her as an apprentice to nurture. In Franco’s case, she was a sibling to cherish… or maybe something more. However, to Samuel, she was a force of awe and an equal. Their fifteen minutes soon expired; the driver pulled off the road and spoke up to LuLu. They had arrived at Josh’s apartment building. LuLu gave Samuel one last glance. “Maybe you are right. Thank you for listening to me today, Samuel. I do feel a lot better after talking about it.” She offered him a smile before she slipped away. Hit and RunWho: LuLu, Selene, and Franco; LuLu and Samuel, later When: Afternoon Where: Barton Weather: Fall Status: Complete Post-note:LuLu was awoken from a sound sleep by the trill of her ringtone going off. She looked blearily at her bedside clock and read ’03:00’ in its bright LEDs. The sigel sighed. Who would be calling her at this hour? Whoever it was, they were not important enough to get her up at this godawful time. She curled back up into her sheets and decided to let it ring. After a few seconds, there was the familiar ding of a new message in her voicemail box. About a minute later, a handful of consecutive chirps, buzzes, and chimes erupted from her cell. LuLu’s eyes snapped open. Perhaps this was important enough for her to answer. The girl rolled out from under bed and left her makeshift nest of blankets to seek out her phone. Once she got ahold of it, she swiped open the home screen to view her messages. The first one made her heart drop to the bottom of her stomach. LuLu never thought she would hear Selene ruffled. The older woman had a knack for maintaining a cool and level head. Her composure was just as certain as the sun setting and rising in the sky. However, during their brief conversation over the phone, the woman sounded helpless in a way she never had before. LuLu arrived at Barton Medical within the hour. She greeted Selene at the entrance to the trauma unit. The woman looked even more broken than she had sounded over the phone. Her eyes were red and puffy. The sigel could tell she had been crying and it scared LuLu. The girl began, “Is he ok?” Selene’s expression looked uncertain. “He is stabilized but the doctors say he is not out of the woods. Franco was in a hit and run as he was leaving Barton.” LuLu’s posture tensed. “As he was leaving Barton…” She had been the one to abandon him there after their incident. It must have happened shortly after she had departed. He had gotten into an accident because he was alone. The sigel felt a twisting in her stomach. If she had been there, could she have stopped this from happening? Her voice was shaking as she replied, “I sh-should have stayed with him. I-I could have done something.” The rabbit felt arms enclose around her without warning. Selene drew her in close and sobbed into her blond hair, “No, do not say that! Thank god you were not there. You could have gotten hit, too. I do not know what I would have done if both of you had been hurt.” The older woman squeezed the sigel tightly and refused to let go. LuLu returned the embrace. Both of them grounded one another as they tried to comprehend the circumstances they were in. Though Selene had told her not to blame herself, the rabbit still felt guilt bubbling up in the pit of her belly. LuLu probed slowly, “Please… tell me everything that happened. I want to help him.” Her fists tightened against Selene’s back. Selene pulled the raevan’s gaze to meet hers. Her brown eyes searched Lu’s amethyst depths for an answer. “I do not know if you can help him, but I can tell you everything I know.” The woman pulled away and gave LuLu some room to breathe. “The witnesses said it happened when he was walking out of the park. A red sports car with a black devil motif painted on its hood swerved and hit him.” Selene’s trembled, “The driver did not even care Franco was injured. They continued on without even stopping. The doctors say Franco has a punctured lung, broken ribs, and many other fractures. They had to sedate him into a coma so that he can have a chance at healing.” LuLu frowned, “And the doctors... they promised he will get better?” Selene shook her head, “I do not think anyone can promise that right now.” The rabbit looked at her mentor in disbelief. There had to be a way she could help Franco. Even if it was a long shot, she would not give up on him. The woman continued, “Are you ready to see him?” Her brows knitted together. LuLu doubted she would ever be truly ready, but she nodded. Selene led her into the unit and towards Franco’s room. Once they entered, the rabbit could not help but cover her mouth to stifle her horror. The vivacious man who had been grinning with her only hours before was now lying in a hospital bed comatose. Bandages covered most of his body, but what skin she could see was a ghostly pallor instead of its usual sunlit tan. A large tube was clenched between his teeth to inflate and deflate his lungs while numerous other tubes were draining fluids from his wounds. LuLu choked back a sniffle. He looked more machine than man at this point. The rabbit slowly drew in closer to the man. She moved to reach for his hand but paused. She felt as though she might break him in this state. It was Franco, who always seemed so unstoppable, and now she was afraid she would hurt him merely by holding his hand. The girl pushed back those thoughts and wove her fingers with his. They were cold. --- The moment she left Selene and Franco’s side, LuLu knew what she had to do. Her friend would need a miracle at this point. She only knew of one person who could deliver on miracles. He had already accomplished one for Selene’s family. Perhaps, Samuel could muster up one more. This was her only chance at saving Franco. LuLu held her breath as she called up the enigmatic man. As expected, he replied promptly after three rings. There was a brief moment of static then his rich voice purred over the line. “Scarlet, how unexpected. To what do I owe this pleasure? I hope you are well this morning.” The sigel cut past the formalities and got to the point. “I will work for you, but I have a request.” The rabbit’s sensitive ears could hear Samuel gulp softly. The man asked pointedly, “Why the sudden haste, Scarlet?” LuLu felt an edge in his voice and flinched. She replied, “Someone I care for is in the hospital. It does not look good. I need you to make sure he survives. Please, I will do anything for you. Just promise me this.” There was a soft exhale over the line. Samuel clicked his tongue, “That is a pretty hefty price to pay for the Scarlet Starlet.” LuLu was about to breakdown at his response. However, to her relief, the man continued, “But, we have a deal. I happen to know some of the finest doctors in Gaia. Send me this person’s location and I will make sure they are tended to.” LuLu squeaked, “Thank you so much, Samuel.” Samuel chuckled, “Anything for you, my dearest Scarlet.” SOLO

Retail TherapyWho: LuLu and Samuel When: Afternoon Where: Gambino Weather: Winter Status: Complete Post-note:Not having a cell phone was driving the rabbit sigel up a wall. Simple things like checking the weather were now too tedious to endure. The uncertainty that came from being unable to communicate directly with Selene about Franco’s health was also leaving her on edge. LuLu decided that day she would get a new cell. She had a stash of savings from her makeup jobs that she could crack into, and it seemed like a good use of the money. Plus, a lot of models had come out that year such as the GaiaPhone 10. If she stayed optimistic, it wasn’t too much of a stretch to think of it like an impromptu upgrade. So that is what brought her to an electronics store in Gambino. It had all the shiny recently released gadgets that everyone was drooling over. LuLu was no exception to this. The rabbit was easily distracted by the laptops, games, and other baubles lining the aisles. Fortunately, she made her way to the phones without an unexpected casualty to her savings. Of course, the GaiaPhone 10 was being advertised. Its display took up nearly half of the area’s floorplan. The girl settled into the crowd and busied herself with playing with the demo phone. She swiped her finger over the screen and it came to life. It even greeted her! LuLu could not help her delighted squeak. She glanced up at the price and scrunched up her nose. She had not expected it to be THAT expensive. Maybe she could settle on an older model instead? LuLu backed away from the excessive display, and sought out a less extravagant corner of the store. As she was getting ready to float on she felt a hand grasp her shoulder. She froze in place and looked at the foreign appendage accosting her. It was gloved in soft, expensive leather. Just before she could look back to uncover its owner, Samuel’s distinct voice purred in her ear, “Are you looking for something, Scarlet?” She quickly finished turning around so she could greet the older man with a smile and curtsy. “Hello, Mister Samuel!” Her voice chimed sweetly. She nodded to him. “Yes. I need a new cell phone.” After a moment she continued, “There was an accident while I was on your job. My old one broke.” She pouted softly. Samuel returned her smile. He corrected her softly, “Just Samuel. No need for formality between friends, right?” He raised a prim brow at the girl. Friends? LuLu mulled over the idea for a moment before she came to her decision. “Of course!” She would unquestionably call the man her friend. He had done so much for her recently. In fact, it he was almost too good to be true! The least she could do for him was go on a mission for him every now and again. At the thought of missions, LuLu suddenly realized she never communicated her success to Samuel. She squawked hurriedly, “Other than my phone everything went well. I delivered the present safe and sound! Sorry I was not able to tell you sooner.” Samuel’s grin only grew at the mention of the present. The wrinkles at the edges of his mouth deepened. “I know you did. I heard that they absolutely loved it.” Despite a few minutes passing since their initial greeting, his hand was still resting on her shoulder. He squeezed LuLu gently before he let go of her. “Good work. I apologize that my little errand cost you your phone. I had no intention of causing you harm, Scarlet.” LuLu pursed her lips once again, “It is ok. It was my fault, not yours. I was clumsy.” She glossed over the fact that an unexpected run in with a wayward frei had been the determining factor in the loss of her old phone. She could spare Samuel the gritty details of that night. Regardless of how exactly it unfolded, the outcome was the same. The sigel was now without her most valuable source of communication. She returned to their conversation. “I was hoping to get the newest model, but…” Her gaze went back towards the display and the phone’s exorbitant price tag. “I think I will get something simpler.” Samuel hummed quietly. “You do not strike me as someone simple. Far from it, Scarlet.” His ice blue eyes seemed to grow brighter as though they were lit from within. He plucked one of the GaiaPhone 10 boxes from a shelf above her head. He held it out to her. “If you want it, it is yours.” He shook the box in front of her teasingly for good measure. The rabbit’s delicately arched brows rose in tandem. “What?” She tried to gauge the man’s expression. She had gotten so used to Franco’s practical jokes that she was expecting a punch line to follow shortly. However, Samuel was not that type of guy. He did not prank. He was one of the few people LuLu could trust to mean exactly what he said. She plucked the box from his grasp. The rabbit then held it to her chest securely as though it would fly away if she did not keep it ensnared. Her soprano voice hitched softly as she sighed a ‘thank you’. The girl fluttered forward and embraced Samuel tightly. It was so forceful that the box caught in between them pressed into her collar bone uncomfortably. Her round cheek pressed against the course material of his overcoat until it flattened. Her keen ears picked up on the man’s heartbeat speeding up, rattling in his chest like a caged animal. His whole body tensed at first. However, Samuel’s shoulders soon slumped forward and he leaned down to return the gesture. She felt his heavy arms enclose around her. LuLu held steadfast in the hug until she felt her gratitude had been expressed adequately to the man. She eased up on the strength clasping her arms together before she released her hold completely. Both limbs fell to her side. She waited patiently. However, Samuel’s embrace remained. After a few seconds, she asked timidly, “Samuel?” There was another second of delay before he freed her and backed away. LuLu glanced up at him curiously. The man appeared stunned as though she had jostled him from a particularly immersive daydream. It was her first time seeing such a wistful expression cross the man’s features. LuLu’s eyes appreciated the sight like she was consuming a rare treat. Samuel combed a hand through his slicked hair. His stoic mask fell back into place perfectly. The man nodded to her and exhaled steadily, “You’re welcome.” Samuel then motioned to the store’s clerk. He pointed to the box still locked in LuLu’s steely clutches. “Pack that up for the lady.” LuLu relinquished the box to the clerk and watched as the young boy rung up her purchase. The already astronomical price seemed even more outrageous once tax had been added. The rabbit hissed softly between her clenched teeth like it physically injured her. On the other hand, Samuel produced a credit card and completed the transaction painlessly. She took her gift from the clerk and followed Samuel to the exit. LuLu glanced at the bag she had in tow and then to Samuel’s empty hands. She inquired, “You did not buy anything for yourself. What did you come here for?” The man chuckled, “I own the store.” LuLu’s eyes widened. A quiet ‘oh’ escaped her lips. Samuel continued, “To be exact, this whole shopping mall is mine. I came to check in on how things are progressing.” He nodded to another employee, and they immediately tensed up with nervous energy. He commented, “I like a personal touch when handling my business ventures.” He led LuLu to the exit. The girl followed behind the man. She managed a few steps past the store’s threshold before a force pulled back against her. “Eek!” Her gaze shot back towards the door where her ribbon had become snagged. The rabbit sighed and gave the strip of fabric a few rough tugs until it came loose. She heard an inquisitive hum erupt from behind her. Samuel’s eyes were on her again. LuLu stated flatly, “It happens pretty often. I have gotten used to it.” She did not miss a beat. “It is one of the perks of having no legs.” Sarcasm dripped from her words. Samuel clicked his tongue and knitted his brows together. “My sympathies.” LuLu smiled at his effort consoling her. She shrugged a shoulder halfheartedly and commented, “Sooner or later, I should not have to worry about it. Others have gotten their legs. So, I know it can happen eventually.” Judging by his vacant stare, Samuel was confused. “Others? There are more of your… species?” He chose his words carefully for LuLu. She elaborated, “Raevan.” The girl nodded, “There are tons more! Cesc, Melisande, Xiu, Laz, Ryder, Dair…” She started counting on her fingers but gave up once she ran out of digits to add up. “We are all pretty different from each other though.” She chirped happily, “I am the one and only LuLu!” Samuel chuckled, “Without a doubt, you are irreplaceable.” LuLu continued, “Most of us gave ribbons instead of legs. But, a few of us have grown them!” She brought her hand up and brushed a finger along her ribcage as though she was creating an invisible line dividing her torso. “I used to only go to here. No hips.” Samuel gasped and awed at her words. LuLu had captured his attention completely. He was genuinely curious as he asked, “How did you develop? Do you know how to get legs like the others?” LuLu scrunched up her face. “I was not in a good place when I got my hips. I do not remember much except I was under a lot of stress and in a lot of pain.” Her expression turned even gloomier as she continued to answer his questions, “I do not know what makes us grow. If I did, I would already have a pair of legs.” Though LuLu had accepted who she was, accepting and understanding exactly what she was a separate fight. There were still parts of her that seemed alien. Her ink form was one of these mysteries. Her lack of a complete lower half was another one. Sometimes she felt incomplete around people like Selene, Franco, and Samuel. Especially when silly things like getting her ribbon caught in a door served as an aching reminder of their differences. She was tired of feeling out of place and being so dependent on Josh. She mused. A fresh pair of lower limbs would definitely help with a few of her grievances. Her eyes stared longingly at the pavement. “There are so many things I would do with legs.” Samuel interjected, “I can tell it is a difficult subject.” He did not enjoy seeing the girl in that much distress. “I am sorry for probing. We can talk about something else, Scarlet.” LuLu returned her eyes to Samuel, “Yes, please.” She perked up as an idea occurred to her, “There is a really good restaurant nearby. We can get lunch together. This one will be my treat!” Though she did not have as much money to throw around, the sigel could still offer the man her company as compensation for his kindness. Samuel smirked. The rabbit was always trying to one up her opponent, even if the battle was generosity. He remarked, “Of course. Lead the way.” SOLO
