The Fox and the Dessert!
Read it here!
This RP is still in progress, just putting the posts we have in the post now.

Smerdle and Brownie
Deaths came in threes and lightning never struck twice; as stupid as those adages sounded, Smerdle could believe them. She had never heard, however, what happened with weird-a** s**t. Did it come in sixes? Did it strike twice or nine times or forty-seven ******** times in a row? Well, she'd discovered it was at least twice. This morning, she had awakened to find a giant version of her son tucked under the covers next to her (apparently suffering from the kind of bad dream that causes one to grow spontaneously), and with today's mail she had received a postcard from Chucky. Her stupid friend Chucky who had left town back in December, trusting his bladed, angry baby to her care. He had apparently written to ask her if she had been back to The Benedict Center with the little hellspawn, like Smerdle was supposed to know what that was. After a short call to information, she had found out.

Now, Smerdle and Brownie were not at The Benedict Center at all. They had stumbled upon the marketplace, and were making their way through the tangle of carts and booths at the sometimes-fast, sometimes-slow pace of a toddler.

Shauna
Now what was odd about this picture? Shauna was walking through the marketplace with a long red jacket on and a white dress, carrying a basket on her arm. The jacket just barely touched the ground as the fox girl walked...and it was almost like a modern version of little red riding hood! But at least she wasn't skipping and singing 'tralala' or anything, that most definitely wasn't Shauna's style, but the weather was getting somewhat nicer so she could wear cute sundresses like this as long as she had a jacket.

In the basket was brownies and cookies Pandora had made, but then her mother decided to run some errands, and then Pan needed to go grocery shopping. Shauna was fine with staying home as long as everyone else did! But then Liam said he was going to go see his girlfriend, and then everyone else slowly left the house to go play by the beach. So Shauna was left alone, and she hated being alone, and that was why she was here now! Asra had said she could visit the Benedict Center anytime she didn't want to be alone, and this was one of those times.

Smerdle and Brownie
"Wha daa?" Brownie asked as they passed a stall full of ornamental swords and daggers. One shiny sword was hanging over the edge of the table nearest the toddler and she grabbed for it, fingers slipping over the flat of the blade.

Suddenly, she was scooped up into Smerdle's arms. "Don't do that," her aunt admonished.

Brownie wanted to tell her that it didn't matter, that the blade wasn't going to hurt her, but she just kept silent. She had the best knives in the place, and everyone knew it. She flexed them, feeling them catch on the straps of her tiny overalls, and her mouth opened in a toothy grin. The Shattered had decided to be nicer to her temporary guardian, at least until she could take care of herself. She found that everyone was nicer to her when she wasn't cutting them up, so for now being nice suited her.

A breeze ruffled Brownie's hair and she wiggled around to face forward in Smerdle's arms. She could make out a red-clad figure ahead of them, beyond a crowd of stupid teenagers looking for gifts to buy each other. Why didn't they just buy things for themselves? That was going to be the first thing Brownie did when she got some money. The red person had big ears on the top of her head, and she felt just like Ribbon Boy. Identifying others like herself had proven to be Brownie's only talent besides injuring people, and she wanted to see who this girl was.

She pointed and stretched her body as far as it would go, but Smerdle ignored her. "Go. Goooooo," she said, and when her aunt looked down, Brownie pointed again. "Red."

Smerdle nodded and approached the hooded figure. Anything to prevent a tantrum.

"Heyu!" Brownie said loudly. Ear Head's back was turned, but whoever it was couldn't just ignore her, right?

Shauna
Shauna wasn't wearing a hood, it wasn't that cold, but the red jacket stood out pretty well in the crowd. There were so many voices calling out in different directions that Shauna didn't notice the call to her for a moment, but then it suddenly registered to her that...hey...there was a voice directed at her? The fox turned and looked around, spotting the little girl looking straight at her and smiling brightly.

"Why hello!" The fox called, fixing the basket on her arm and walking back to the little girl with shiny wings and the woman carrying her. Huh...were her wings metal? Interesting!

Smerdle and Brownie
"Sorry to bother you," Smerdle said. "She really wanted to come over and see you, and I didn't feel like arguing." She smiled. "I'm Smerdle and this is Brownie."

Brownie stopped squirming now that they were close. She reached out a hand, palm open, in a kind of non-moving wave. "Hi," she said quickly, before pulling her arm in back toward her. She didn't really have much else to say now that they were near. Brownie wanted to touch that purple thing, but she was being good and wouldn't do it unless invited. It wouldn't hurt to point at it though. She stuck her arm out again, finger extended toward the purple pawprint.

Shauna
"Bother me? Oh, it's no bother at all, Miss Smerdle!" Shauna smiled, red ears perked high on her head. Brownie? What an adorable name! ...She had brownies in her basket...but if she offered one to Brownie would that count as cannibalism? Pretty deep stuff for such a silly idea. Perhaps she'd just give them cookies instead? Oh well! She had a whole basket! There were plenty of things she could give these two!

She blinked a few times when a finger was pointed at her, instinctively putting a hand over the cheek that was marked. Cal had been interested in her print too! ...Hopefully this girl wouldn't lick her cheek too... "You like it? I'm Shauna, by the way. It's nice to meet you both." She leaned closer to Brownie could touch the mark if she wished to. "You remind me of a curious little sister~!" Shauna giggled, reaching into her basket to offer Brownie a brownie.

"Want one?"

Smerdle and Brownie
"Nice to meet you, Shauna," Smerdle said. She watched as Brownie leaned forward, trying to prevent any bloody mishaps.

The girl's big ear head was coming toward her! That's what Brownie called service. She poked a little at the mark, but when she saw it wasn't coming off, she lost interest. Ear Head had probably just drawn it on or something. But then the other girl offered her some of the Food That Had Named Itself After Her, and she nodded greedily. Of course they were called the same name as she was. They were both awesome!

Shauna
Shauna's ears gave a little flick when her cheek was poked, almost waiting to see if the girl would do what Cal did and lick her. ...Oh thank Halexei, she didn't! The fox grinned, looking up at Smerdle with another brownie already in hand. "Would you like one too, Miss Smerdle?" She offered, standing up straight and petting Brownie's hair for a moment. It was so pretty!

"You know I was just on my way to a daycare center called the Benedict Center! Have you heard of it?" Shauna stole a cookie from the basket for herself, her tail giving a flick under her jacket in an attempt to stay as comfortable as possible with something pressing her tail against her body the way this red jacket was. "I think she'd fit right in there!" And Asra would probably love her! Shauna paused for a moment, looking at Brownie's wings again.

"Those look really cool...are they made of metal or something?"

Smerdle and Brownie
"I'd better not," Smerdle said to Shauna's offer of food. "Brownie might... do something." She didn't want to take two hands off of the moody toddler, despite the fact that she was being remarkably well-behaved.

"We were headed to The Benedict Center too," she continued. Smerdle was glad this was a happy coincidence for a change instead of a strange one. "We kind of got sidetracked. Do you know the way?"

Brownie preened at the attention and moved her wings a bit when they were mentioned. Now this was someone she could get along with!

"Yes, they most certainly are," Smerdle said. She had the scars to prove it, but that might be upsetting to talk about. "I don't know what kind of metal, but it stays sharp all by itself. It would scare me if I thought about it too long."

Shauna
Oh that was right. Shauna smiled and nodded in understanding and putting the brownie back in the basket. Gasping happily, Shauna clasped her hands together when Smerdle told her they were already on their way to the center. "Like the back of my hand! It's like a second home to me!" She giggled, looking down at Brownie, her smile softening.

"Wow. They're pretty...can I touch them?" Or would it be too dangerous? They moved...so what if her finger was cut? The fox tentatively reached out anyway, careful to stay clear of putting her fingers in any position they could be cut up. They were so smooth! Shauna knew so many people with wings!

Smerdle and Brownie
Brownie held fairly still when Shauna made a move to touch her wings. She wouldn't want to cut her new friend, after all. The blades were slightly warm and fluttered up and down the smallest bit as Shauna touched them, the wrong way for proper flying, but the right way for horrible face-maiming! Brownie was quite proud of them.

Well, that certainly was interesting. "My friend said he brought Brownie to this Center before. They met a boy covered with ribbons." Smerdle imagined some sort of disco mummy, but now that she had seen Shauna's fox ears, she thought maybe this center was popular with less homicidal children than she thought.

Shauna
Shauna blinked. How odd...she couldn't fly with these wings? Well it sort of made sense, one couldn't fly too well with metal for wings. Her fingers twitched a little when they moved, almost afraid she'd get cut. You could never be too careful.

Her ears perked up when Smerdle mentioned that Brownie had already met a boy covered with ribbons, wearing the brightest smile on her face. "You met Asra already~? Isn't he just great?" It was obvious how fond Shauna was of Asra, and he was the complete opposite of a mummy! "You'll like Asra, Miss Smerdle! He's so nice and he loves little kids Brownie's age." Shauna explained happily, handing Brownie another brownie.

Smerdle and Brownie
Brownie nodded. If Asra was Ribbon Boy's name, sure she'd met him and he was pretty cool. She reached out and plucked the brownie from Shauna's hand.

"What do you say?" Smerdle said.

What did she say? How was she supposed to know? "Brownie," she mumbled as she chewed.

"She means 'thank you.'" A guy covered in ribbons who loved toddlers? Smerdle had to see this to believe it. "I'm sure I will like him," she said. "Let's go see him then," she said with a smile for the fox girl.

Shauna
"You're welcome, Brownie." Shauna pet her hair briefly, still finding it interesting how her hair was two different colors...and naturally? Wow. The fox looked up at Smerdle and smiled when the woman said they could go see him now, nodding her head and standing back up. "I hope it's open today! If not...we can go to the beach and play along the shore? It's already starting to get warm here so it shouldn't be too bad to get a little wet, right?"

The fox turned and waited for Smerdle to follow with Brownie, nibbling on another cookie...this would be the last one she took. Didn't want to finish them all!

Smerdle and Brownie
Brownie wouldn't have known why her hair was two different colors, even if she'd been asked. All she knew was it liked to get caught in her wings and that stunk. She had tried to get Antsmerdle to cut it, but her temporary guardian was stupid and only seemed to know how to put it up in some stupider braids. It wasn't like that today, Brownie had made sure of it, but Smerdle was looking at it now like she was going to engage in some wild braiding right then and there.

Smerdle caught up to Shauna, walking beside her but letting the girl lead. "That sounds like fun. You'd like the beach, right?" she said to Brownie, boosting her into a more comfortable position. They had just managed to get the rust off of the toddler's wings after a long period of neglect, but now that she knew how to clean them, Smerdle wouldn't let that happen again.

Shauna
Shauna's smile couldn't be any bigger! There were so many children! ...Shauna really needed to find someone her age, but at least she met another girl; she'd met so many boys, probably more boys than girls. "But wait...it won't be too bad on her wings, right?" She asked suddenly after they'd been walking for maybe two of three minutes, pausing the glance at the pair. She didn't want to rust Brownie's wings...

The Benedict Center was coming into view finally, and Shauna's walk sped up subconciously. "We're almost there, Miss Smerdle~!" Shauna chirped, basically skipping over to the door to find...the sign was on closed? The fox frowned. "Aww! Darn!" She sighed, turning back to Smerdle and Brownie and running a hand up through her hair.

"It's usually always open...maybe Miss Alania and Miss Orestae are out today or something...but Asra usually takes care of things too...maybe he's busy." A shrug. "To the beach?"

Smerdle and Brownie
"It would be if I left them alone. Made that mistake once already," she muttered. "But now I know how to take care of them. The water shouldn't be that big of a deal." Smerdle smiled and sped up along with the excited girl, only to find that this Benedict Center was closed. Oh well, no disco mummy today.

"Yeah, the beach is perfect," Smerdle said, grinning. It might have still been a little cold for Smerdle to feel comfortable going in the water, but she wasn't opposed to wading just so Brownie could see how it was. She was curious to see how the kid would react to that much water.

Shauna
"Hmm...I see! Well then! No worries?" Shauna asked, turning around and stealing another cookie from the basket. This basket was lighter than a child...perhaps she could get a load off Smerdle's hands.

"Want to switch bundles for a little while? I can carry Brownie and you can carry the basket? It's gotten so much lighter now that we've eaten so many of the treats inside!" She giggled, tilting her head a little with the most pleading look on her face. 'Pleeeeeeease~?' said the look in her eyes, obviously very set on carrying the child. Shauna really needed friends her age! Geeze!

Smerdle and Brownie
Smerdle smiled at Shauna's exuberance. "If you really want to hold her you can, I guess." She had never met anyone who really wanted to hold the kid, but there was a first time for everything. Now if only Brownie would behave. Smerdle looked down at the toddler and tried to look stern. She didn't really have reason to be, so it came out kind of comical. "Brownie, be nice." She nodded.

Brownie poked her brownie-covered hand up into her aunt's face. When was she ever anything but nice? Stupid Ant.

Smerdle held Brownie out toward Shauna, prepared to grab the basket in exchange, and Brownie reached out her arms toward the other Shattered and smiled, her little sharp teeth gnashing happily.

Shauna
Shauna nodded, reaching her arms out with the basket-holding one closer to Smerdle than the other arm, holding Brownie with one arm for the brief moment it took for the woman to take the basket before her arm finally moved to comfortably support Brownie on her hip. Her mouth shaped into an 'o' when she noticed the sharp little teeth, putting a few fingertips to her mouth and giving a tiny little gasp as if she were afraid. "My, Brownie! What sharp teeth you have!" The fox smiled, bouncing the girl once to make her more comfortable.

"Alrighty then! To the beach! Pick a direction, any direction! This is an island, after all." She stepped away from the building and started walking back to the street, looking around. There was a nice beach near the house, but there were beaches all around the island.

Smerdle and Brownie
"Well, any way is fine by me really," Smerdle said. She didn't really know Gambino all that well, but she knew Brownie would soon get restless without a change of scenery. "How about the shortest way?" she suggested.

For now, Brownie wasn't bored at all. She smiled and gnashed her teeth again. "Teef teef teef," she mumbled. Brownie put her hand on Shauna's shoulder and looked around. Ol' Ear Head was okay.

Shauna
The shortest way? Well that was easy! They were already pretty close to the beach anyway. "Alrighty then!" She chirped, bouncing Brownie once to settle her more comfortably on her hip. So this was how Elle felt the first time she held Shauna! Only...Shauna was a ball of energy who wouldn't stop bouncing while on Elle's hip, that poor woman. At least Brownie wasn't the same way! Her hips aren't as developed as Elle's were!

"You're so scary~!" Shauna gasped, walking down the street with Smerdle. They'd be at the beach in no time! "So do you guys live around here at all?"

Smerdle and Brownie
"We live near Aekea. I take the bus over here all the time, but I have a feeling Brownie's going to be demanding a car as soon as she's old enough. She found lots to complain about, even though she can't talk much." Smerdle laughed to herself. At least the kid was still behaving.

Brownie lifted her head from where she'd been lightly poking at Shauna's jacket. Red was a cool color, but hey! Wasn't that water? She pointed at the beach ahead and smiled, careful not to move around too much. If she maimed this girl, they would never make it to the water!

Shauna
Shauna blinked. Aekea? Hey! Auntie Ioyla lived there! "Aekea? My Auntie Ioyla lives there! Maybe you know her? She's got horns...and pointy ears...and brown hair and she smokes a lot and swears a lot. My cousin Ilistala's her daughter! Her hair looks like a big flame, and she's got black tattoos and is about...Brownie's size!" The fox smiled, giggling at the car comment. Shauna didn't want a car, they were too big for her tastes. Maybe something smaller...like one of those cool scooters...but you couldn't have a lot of people on those. Okay so maybe a little car would be okay with her. But why was she thinking about cars like this?! She'd almost lost herself!

She blinked and looked down at the little girl when she felt the poking, shrugging her shoulders a bit. "Like it? You've got red in your hair too!" She continued walking even after she'd seen the water, nodding happily when Brownie pointed. "We're almost there! Just a few more minutes of walking!"

Once they'd finally reached the beach Shauna put down the little girl she was carrying so she could walk in the sand with the fox still holding her hand. "It's a good thing it's not so bright today! The sand would be so hot."

Smerdle and Brownie
Smerdle didn't really want to get in to why she didn't know many Gaians, so she just shook her head and smiled. "This... Ioyla sounds interesting," she said. "In a good way, I mean." It wouldn't do to accidentally say something negative about the girl's aunt, after all.

Once firmly on the ground, Brownie plopped to a sitting position, taking Shauna's hand with her for a couple of inches before letting go. She immediately started yanking on her shoes, anxious to get her feet into the sand. Her laces were knotted, so she only succeeded in pulling them tighter.

"Brownie," Smerdle said, her voice filled with humor and a bit of exasperation. The woman kneeled and unknotted Brownie's shoes before standing and brushing off her knees. "It certainly is nice out," she said to Shauna.

Brownie cupped her hands around the sand, attempting to pile it into a castle like she'd seen the big kids do. "Boo," she said. It was too dry, but she didn't know that.

Shauna
Shauna nodded and smiled. "She's my mom's best friend since they were kids. They yell and make mean comments to each other...a lot...but they always end up laughing, giggling and smiling afterwards. I think my mom called it tough love once." She giggled, kneeling down beside Brownie while she tried taking her shoes off. Shoes were such odd things...she could never wear them.

The fox reached over to try and help Brownie, but Smerdle had already done that for her. Nodding to the woman's statement, Shauna looked over to the water. It was nice out, and the sky was gorgeous. At Brownie's small complaint Shauna frowned, suddenly perking up when she realized why the little girl was booing. Was that all? That problem could easily be solved! "You want to make a sand castle? C'mon, let's get closer to the water then to where the sand's perfect for building things!" They could even make a mote that could be filled up by the waves! It'd be fun! Shauna held her hand out for Brownie to take and carefully stepped along the beach to where the sand was a bit more wet.

Smerdle and Brownie
Brownie grabbed Shauna's hand and followed her down closer to the water's edge. Her toes sunk into the wet sand and she wriggled them around. She looked around to make sure Aunt Smerdle was following before leaning over and grabbing some of the moist sand. "Koo."

"Yeah, I've got a best friend like that," Smerdle said after a while. Of course, he was off doing god knows what while she was watching his kid, but she had kind of convinced herself that didn't matter anymore. At least Brownie was somewhat well-adjusted now. She looked at the two girls and had a silent flashback to the last time she had to clean sand off of the toddler.

Shauna Jenkins
"And perfect for making the biggest sandcastle ever." She said, holding the skirt of her dress up to keep herself from sitting on it when she sat on the sand next to Brownie. "How about we start now before it's too dark?" Shauna offered with a smile, already beginning to gather more sand closer to them so they could start building.

She looked up when Smerdle spoke, tilting her head a little. "Really? What a coincidence! ..Hey look." Shauna's foot twitched a little when something tiny crawled over it. It was a little hermit crab! The fox giggled and picked it up in her hand, finding a few shells next to her tail and holding them up for Brownie to see. "We can use these to make it pretty!"

Smerdle and Brownie
"Yup," Smerdle said, smiling. She backed off, letting the girls have fun together without interruption from the old person.

Brownie sunk her hands into the small pile of sand closest to her and jerked them out again with a squeal when she saw Shauna's crab. It was so small! The only other animals Brownie had ever seen that compared were Sylvester's little octopi. Brownie wondered if she put some of these crabs in a jar if they would fight like the octopi did. "Fite fite," she said. She poked at the empty shells before turning back to the sand. "Bild!" she urged with a tiny chortle. The crabs needed a house!

Shauna
Shauna blinked. "Fight?" She frowned for a moment. That wasn't good...fighting hurt people. Her smile returned when Brownie told her they needed to start building, nodding happily and sitting the crab down next to her. Surprisingly enough it stayed. These two weren't going to hurt it so it wasn't scared.

"It'll be a biiiig castle with a mote! And a drawbridge and a tower for the princess! How's that sound? And Mr. Hermit Crab can have his own room too! Can't let him become a bum!" Shauna winked and giggled, reaching over to the pile of sand to give it a little shape. It would be so much easier if they had those handy buckets that had the castle shapes for them to mold the sand into. They'd just have to make do with what they had.

Brownie
Brownie bounced and clapped her hands. This castle stuff was pretty cool, even if it was currently a little flat. She grabbed a bunch of little handfuls of sand and started piling them on. "Tow'r yah!" Stupid mouth. She had cooler stuff to say, she just couldn't get it out.

Maybe this castle could have an arena. For fighting. Nah, Shauna didn't seem interested. Brownie looked up at Aunt Smerdle and pinched her fingers together in silent inquiry. Surely her cousin could use some tiny crabs. And if she just happened to go in his room and shake the cage when no one was home, it wouldn't hurt anyone.

Shauna
"Yeah! Mister Hermit crab is sure to love this!" Shauna said with a smile, getting some wet sand to put around the piece of the castle she'd just molded to give it some extra support. The fox blinked and watched Brownie for a moment when she began pinching her fingers. What was that all about?

Mentally shrugging it off she turned back to their sandcastle, only this time her tail felt a little tug. It was a tiny one that she might not have noticed had she not been aware of her tail at all times. She blinked again and turned around to find another hermit crab and giggling. It must have been their lucky day! Carefully picking up the other crab and putting it next to the first one, Shauna smiled. "It seems we've found our princess!"

Smerdle and Brownie
"Can I help?" Smerdle asked, leaning down next to her niece. When Brownie started asking for hermit crabs with the intention of setting them up for deathmatches, it was time for someone to intervene. It was a good thing Shauna didn't know Brownie very well yet.

"No," Brownie said quickly before turning to Shauna and smiling. "Prncessssss!" This was going to be so cool! She carefully stacked more sand before patting it lightly with her palm. It wouldn't be long before they had the best castle on the whole beach!

Shauna Jenkins
Shauna blinked. "Miss Smerdle can help! The more the merrier!" She said with a smile, petting Brownie's hair and nodding. "Princess Crabby! And this is her handsome Prince Hermit. They're happily and love and betrothed to one another! That means they're arranged to be married." She piled some sand on top of one another to make the tall tower the princess would be trapped in. "But the...evil witch Madam...uh...madam shell!" She held up an ugly shell with bumps all over it. "Madam Shell was jealous of their love so she trapped the princess in the higest tower in the castle and built a giant mote around it so the prince couldn't get to her!"

The fox looked down at Brownie, her smile still present. "That a good story?"

Brownie
Brownie didn't answer right away, a sudden idea striking her somewhere around the first mention of Madam Shell. She giggled to herself every few seconds and alternately shot Smerdle dirty looks and poked around in the sand. Aha!

She unearthed a big, curvy shell, larger than Smerdle's hand from the sand and lugged it over. "Drag'n," she said, grinning happily. "Good storee." Good? Now it was a ******** great story.

Shauna
The fox looked down at Brownie when she found a big shell, taking it from her and holding it up. Her ears perked up when Brownie suggested that be a dragon, giggling and nodding her head a few times. "That's a great idea! A dragon to keep the prince at bay!" She put the shell down next to Madam Shell and the crabs, beginning to build a small wall around their castle.

"This'll be the best story ever!" Shauna smiled at Brownie, digging a section of the mote where she'd just taken sand for the wall. This was pretty fun! She never came up with stories like this for sandcastles!

Return of the tail pulling cheek licker!
Read it here!
This RP is still in progress, just putting the posts we have in the post now.

Shauna
Did April have a nickname? If it did, it must have been something related to uneventful or even boring...although there was that phrase 'April showers bring May flowers for June brides.' Unfortunately Shauna didn't know anyone who was engaged...and it wasn't June...foiled again. Shauna had a purse swinging from her arm today, filled with money...Eight's money to be exact! It was one of those 'Mom I'm bored and I've seen all our movies!' 'Then go buy new ones.' 'I need money!' 'Take some from my purse.' So she just took the whole wallet...mom would never know.

So here she was today in the closest video store she could get to on foot, already carrying at least five or six DVDs. Oh dear, Eight would have to be more specific next time she said for Shauna to get something. That or just give a certain amount to her.

Inle-roo and Calumet
The door to the video store opened, the tiny bell attached to it jingling cheerfully, a pair of feet swiftly pounding inside. It slowly began to close before being yanked open--those feet retreating--and open again--those feet returning, now with a second pair. "Eager much, Cal?" Inle muttered as Calumet literally dragged her into the video store, rainbow-colored eyes glittering with eager curiosity. Since yesterday's rather abrupt growth spurt he had been brimming with the exuberance of youth, wanting to find and do and see everything all at once.

Frankly, Inle almost missed the toddler that had been glued to the television. She just couldn't keep up with Cal now that he was fully mobile.

He had dropped her hand just as the door closed firmly, decisively, its little bell taking on an angry jangle at being so abused. Gangly, uncoordinated legs propelled him rapidly up and down the main aisle, thoughts moving too fast for his body to keep up. Hey this is great I can REACH stuff and I'm TALL and I can reach all the movies and--haha, that girl's got a funny tail!--and oooh, pretty colors I want to watch it can I watch it? I want to watch it and--

"Cal, slow down. You're going to crash into someth--" In true comical form, Calumet tripped over his own two feet before Inle's warning had fully left her mouth. He crashed noisily into a cardboard display, taking out both it and the movies it had held. Inle watched, incredibly unsurprised, as the dust settled to reveal Cal sprawled across all of it. He looked up, shaggy hair partially hiding his sheepish expression. The man behind the counter did not look happy.

Shauna
Shauna's ears twitched absently at the bell ringing, but she didn't think much of it since there were always people coming and going in here. She was looking at the back of some romance movie now, the type of movie this girl normally thought was gross but it seemed to have a nice story.

A vaguely familiar voice won her attention for a moment, but all Shauna did was glance up for a moment to place the voice with its owner. It belonged to what wo--that was a woman, right? The fox's eyes widened for a moment before she quickly turned away to look back at the movie, opting to keep it and adding it to her bundle. It was quiet for a little while longer until there was a sudden large crash, causing the startled fox's tail to bristle and her ears to perk up high. Looking around, she spotted the fallen display and its attacked, tilting her head a little at the sight of him; he looked a little familiar. The poor boy looked like he could use some help!

She tried her best to hide a giggle as she walked over and bent down a little to offer the boy a hand to help him up. "You okay? That looked like it hurt!" Shauna said with a gentle smile, looking the boy over once to figure out why he seemed familiar like that scary woman with the grunny on her head.

Inle-roo and Calumet
Cal looked up at the sound of an unfamiliar voice, impatiently blowing a chunk of hair out of his face. He blushed, embarassed, as he took hold of her hand and lifted himself out of the mess he caused. Multicolored eyes took in the fox-girl's form with the appreciation of someone used to seeing such strange sights--that purple mark on her cheek was pretty, and somehow familiar--and he opened his mouth as if to speak before closing it, dipping his head and nodding. His tattoos glittered briefly before a rainbow-colored, vaguely sweatdrop-looking shape appeared at his temple.

"Sorry about that, he's clumsy," Inle said, walking over to the pair. "And mute. And socially inept, apparently, but that's my fault."

Shauna
For now Shauna held the movies against her chest a bit protectively, watching Cal quietly as he regained his composure after such a fall. The fox's ears and tail twitched a little while she tried to think of why this guy was so familiar, and she eventually leaned closer to his face as the woman he'd come in with walked over. She only wanted to see past his hair! Although it was pretty colorful, you'd think that would trigger the little childhood memory. "..Oh, really? I know your pain, really. You'd think with little padded paws I'd be more graceful." A small frown tugged at the corner of her lips, but she still leaned in close to Cal's face. "Socially inept..." She repeated offhandedly, trying to think of if she'd met any colorful socially inept boys...Asra was colorful, but she knew him so well! Although there was that one boy...and then it hit her like a sack of bricks.

Shauna's eyes suddenly narrowed and her lips pouted. "At least he's not licking my cheek again." She grumbled, suddenly giggling and dropping her movies to glomp the boy, a bright smile on her lips. "Do you remember me?" Shauna asked, putting her hands on Cal's shoulders and keep herself at arm's length, tilting her head a little to the side to show off her marked cheek and one of her ears. If there was something this girl could remember it was that this boy gave one hell of an ear scratching.

Calumet
Shyness was not a word found in Cal's emotional vocabulary, so when Shauna started staring at him, he openly stared back. He raised a hand to push his hair out of his face--it did tend to get everywhere, he noticed--when he was suddenly glomped. Once Cal got over his bout of startled flailing, he hugged her back, beaming into her face as she pulled away. Random affection, hooray! His head tilted to the side at her question and display, a hand moving from around her to pet the offered ear. It was fuzzy!--but no, no real recognition. Hardly surprising, if one knew Cal well enough. Still beaming, he shook his head.

Shauna
Shauna jumped a little, soon melting against Cal when he started petting her ears. Her tail wagged happily behind her, occasionally brushing against Cal's leg. There was no answer for her to hear, but she somehow was able to feel his head shake...wait...what? That was a no? "...No?" Her ears flattened against her hair and she looked up at the boy, pouting stubbornly. Well if he didn't remember her now she'd just have to somehow remind him! Why wasn't he talking to her? Was he too busy thinking 'Who the hell is this crazy chick' or something?

"W-we met as little kids in the Benedict Center! Come oooon! You've got to remember~! You licked my cheek...and I think you tried to pull my tail but ended up hugging it instead." She put a finger to her cheek, trying to think of something else to get him to remember her. They did spend almost the rest of the time together just cuddling and stuff, but lots of children did that; he probably even did it at home. "Anything ring a bell? Fluffy tail, fuzzy ears, purple marked cheek? Aaaanything at all?" Surely something had to click! ...Right? This was all so very disappointing.

Calumet
Ooooo, this fox-girl was so fluffy! His vacant smile grew at the wagging of her tail--and hey, weren't all her fox traits neat? Like the cartoons he saw on tv!--and wished he had one to wag too. All of the people he had met so far were so interesting; he would have felt plain beside them if he were more self-conscious. As it stood, he was far too oblivious to be anything other than dumb-puppy happy. It was only compounded by the fact that he was getting so thoroughly hugged. He loved hugs, and people, and affection, and saw far too little of it from his floundering mother and apathetic brothers at home. Cal took advantage of it while he could and hugged her tighter.

What was she saying? Words he was able to understand now, but he didn't get her meaning. Benedict Center? He vaguely remembered a place his guardian used to take him to and a colorful boy with wings, and, and...it was starting to come back to him now, a distinct impression of "fuzzy." It also described the quality of these memories; he remembered past events, but they were hazy. Cal touched Shauna's purple pawprint with a curious finger as he flailed within his own memories, smile falling before growing once more--he remembered now! With the silent equivalent of a giggle, he leaned forward and licked the purple mark.

Shauna
Even if Cal was always given affection Shauna'd still give him hugs; she loved hugs! She nuzzled her head under the boy's chin and giggled, having felt his arms tighten around her. He was so...cute? No, that wasn't a proper word. Shauna only ever said little children and stuffed toys were cute. Boys weren't cute, they were something else, but Shauna couldn't think of the word right now.

Shauna leaned back a little to watch Cal, her head tilting to the side while the boy thought on the subject for a bit. Something must've clicked if it got him thinking! ..Right? Her ears flicked up at his touch, looking just a little startled. What was he poking her for? When his smile faded and returned Shauna gasped. "So you remember meEEEE!" She squealed and froze. He'd...he'd licked her! Again! Her yellow eyes were wide, the fur on her tail was bristled and her ears were perked high. The fox remained frozen for some time before she eventually seemed to calm down and pouted pitifully, thrusting out her lower lip. "Are you going to do that every time you see me now?" Shauna asked, glomping the boy again. Her foot kicked at a movie then, and it suddenly reminded her why she was even here to begin with.

"Oops! Uh...hey! Why don't we rent a movie together!" She turned to the freaky looking woman Cal had come in with--she was assuming that was his mother--hopefully she wouldn't mind what she was about to ask. "Is it okay if he comes over to my house to watch a movie~?"

A birthday announcement and...a job?

The house, for the most part, was quiet. It wasn't an awkward or creepy silence, it was comfortable; much preferable to the shrieks and giggles of the younger children. Yeah, it seemed Eight had grown tired of the noises and sent the young ones to have a nap and calm down. It was only one in the afternoon! There must've been something she wanted to concentrate on.

Unfortunately the peacefulness was short-lived. A delighted squeal came from Shauna's room and continued down until the girl was seen jumping up and down in the kitchen doorway with a calendar for that month held up in front of her. A date further down on the page was circled in bright red permanent marker, very eye-catching if one wasn't paying full attention to it. Her mother was sitting at a small kitchen table covered in papers; oddly enough she was wearing a white shirt with a red vest and a black tie with a red heart on it. That was something you'd see the card dealers at Gold Mountain Casino wearing. Eight's eye twitched for a moment when her silence was disturbed. "What is it?" She asked without even looking up from the paper in front of her. Why? Why couldn't it be quiet in the house for just one hour? Why?! Shauna was still jumping up and down only right next to her mother. She put the calendar down on the table on top of Eight's paper and pointed to the circled date, still squealing happily. Eight rose a curious brow as she picked it up, finally looking up at Shauna with a questioning look. "What's this?"

"Guess!" Shauna said, barely able to hold in her excitement. Eight looked down at the calendar again, then back to Shauna. It was something to be excited about...was it her-- "That's my birthday!" She interrupted Eight's thoughts, clapping her hands with excitement. That was just what Eight had been thinking, but nevertheless her eyes widened. Crap. At least it wasn't too close or Eight would be worried she wouldn't have time to plan anything. Her look of surprise softened into a smile.

"Thank you so much for telling me ahead of time." The woman said with a laugh, gesturing to a seat across from her for Shauna to sit in. She took the seat immediately and looked around. This was weird…why so much paperwork? And why was her mother dressed so oddly? Eight put the calendar on her lap after writing 'Shauna's birthday' in the middle of the circle to remind herself why the date was circled to begin with. Shauna was looking at a couple of the papers on the table, only one of them caught her eye. Picking it up, Shauna gave it a quick scan and gasped, looking up at her mother with a frown. Eight blinked. "What's wrong?"

"We...we're not...we're not moving are we?!" Shauna cried, holding out the paper for her mother to see. The woman blinked and looked very confused for just a moment, then she smiled and shook her head, taking the paper from Shauna. "Because I like it here and I don't want to move and this house is nice and--"

"We're not moving. Ioyla is though. She and 'Stala are moving into that house that's for sale next door." Eight reached over and pat her daughter's shoulder with a reassuring smile, winking and waving the paper a bit. "Wouldn't it be nice to be able to see 'Stala more often? Aekea's not exactly a great place to raise a child." Shauna blinked.

"Brownie and Miss Smerdle live in Aekea." She said simply. The fox child picked up another paper and looked at that one too. She suddenly looked very confused. "I thought gambling was a bad habit..." Eight quickly took away the form Shauna was holding and shook her head.

"It can be, but it's not a bad habit for me. Besides! The pit boss saw me beating all his best card dealers and offered me a job there! Instead of losing money I'll be getting money!" Eight stood up and moved to stand in front of Shauna, giving a little turn with her arms spread out. She was showing off the uniform the manager had asked her to try on. "What do you think? I'm allowed to give it my own little flair too! I can wear my gloves and my boots with it. And hey, the official pants are ugly, so I get to wear my favorite black jeans! Not a big different!" She gave an overly dramatic bow and smiled that goofy little smile of hers. Shauna giggled.

"I thought you said you were too lazy to work." This was kind of weird. Her mom? A job? It didn't compute.

"Eh, it's not so much work. I'm too lazy for real work!" Eight sat down and picked up the application form and her pencil, setting back to filling it out. "And I can get a discount for that jester set I want." Shauna burst into a fit of giggles. She knew there was a catch of some kind! It was all for that silly jester costume! Why did her mother want it so much? The fox's giggles eventually faded away and she crossed her arms across her chest in a motherly fashion, putting on a mask of seriousness like Eight did from time to time.

"Well then! You have to promise you'll behave yourself and work hard. No back talking to the manager; be nice to the other dealers, and no flirting with the boys!" Shauna had to try very hard to hold back her smile. Eight pouted and gave a little whine.

"Alright, mom! Gumdrops and rainbows, I know, I know." Her headwings twitched when she was told not to flirt with boys. She grinned. "But that's the best part!" Eight shook her head after that. "Alex doesn't know I have this job."

Shauna blinked. "Shouldn't he know?" Eight nodded and chewed on the end of her pencil for a moment while thinking of an answer for some part of the application form.

"When he comes home I'll tell him. Even if I didn't tell him he'd find out sooner or later. He's not stupid."

"I thought you said all men were idi--"

"You have to consider the fact that I wasn't having a very good day." Eight interrupted, tilting her head a little. "A nickname for the floor...I always knew Jinx and Ace weren't their real names, but I thought those were assigned. Oh well!"

"Can't they just call you Eight?"

"Of course." She wrote that down. The two stayed quiet for a few minutes after that. Shauna was looking at all the papers scattered on the table; most of them were paperwork for Aunt Ioyla's new house, some of them were for Eight's new job, and then everything else was just things that the children had left on the table. The fox was about to get up to find something more interesting to do but Eight stopped her with just her voice. "What do you want?" Shauna blinked. Didn't she already...? "For your birthday, I mean." She quickly added, looking up and smiling again. Eight was always horrible at giving gifts without first getting a wishlist of some kind. Shauna sat back down and propped her chin up in her hands, staring deeply at the table in thought. What did she want for her birthday? Clothes, plushies for her collection...but she'd need more grown up things too. She couldn't stay a childish preteen forever. Movies? Books about...well...she didn't know. Shauna couldn't say shoes! She couldn't wear them! Maybe a really nice dress she could wear to special occasions! Or a backpack she could put stuff in! Thinking about what she wanted was beginning to excite her. She'd officially be a full year old! She needed cool stuff! "Don't feel pressured to think of everything now, sweetie. You've got time to think on it and write down a big list." Shauna nodded and reached across the table to give her mother a big hug.

"Okay! I'll come back with one, I promise! And I'll tell everyone I know about my birthday~!" And with that she skipped out of the room humming happily. Eight smiled. What a crazy kid she was raising. The woman paused in her writing for just a moment to think. An entire year? Shauna hadn't been living here for an entire year...perhaps Asra told her when her birthday was. That was a long time for Shauna to exist without her raising her, she was only vaguely curious about what happened before she met Asra. It still dismayed her that one day that little fox child would be physically older than her! Geeze! Time went by too fast in Gaia!

Rain Rain, Go Away!

Elle invited Shauna to a picnic today! Read about it here!

Shauna
Shauna hummed as she skipped through Gambino to get to where Elle had said to meet her. Her hair was actually free of its braids today and she was wearing her favorite buckled dress, it was good for a picnic...right? Of course! Picnics were fun and this dress was fun too!

The park she was at was, for the most part, mostly grass and gardens, but there was a small gathering of trees over by where she was headed with a small little pond sitting under it. The pond actually reminded her of the one from Bambi when he first met that girl deer. That looked like the place Elle had described! With a bright smile Shauna walked straight over, looking around after a moment or two of waiting. "Elle? ...That's weird...did I come too early?"

Elle
Picking a grape from the bunch, Elle aimed carefully...finally tossing it through the canopy to tag Shauna gently on the back of her shoulder. "No, you just haven't checked your usual hiding spot!"

Perched casually in the tree, back against the trunk, Elle laughed and waved. She was wearing something a bit more sensible today...a long brown skirt and a sky blue ruffled top, hair piled with pins atop her head. Waving, grapes still danging from the other hand, she motioned the girl up.

"I was thinking of trying something new. What do you think?" The blanket was draped over the eastern branches, the basket wedged in the fork of the bough. A stoppered bottle, full of something sparkling and salmon pink, dangled from where it was tied.

"It's so good to see you, Shauna! Now up up and give me a hug!"

Shauna
The fox girl squeaked when a rogue grape attacked her from behind, reaching back behind her as if to grab the person responsible for the assault. "My usual what?" Shauna blinked and looked around, finally looking up and gasping. Elle was up there!

Shauna giggled and nodded her head a few times, climbing up the tree long before Elle's invitation. It was obvious just by watching her that she was used to climbing things, digging the little claws in her footpaws into the wood of the tree to give her added support as she climbed up to sit with Elle. "This is so cool!" She giggled, throwing her arms around Elle in a big hug. It was nice to hang out with Elle! She taught her things her mother was sometimes too embarrassed to teach her.

Shauna looked around at the woman's setup while still hugging her, spotting the bottle last. Sparkling and salmon pink...that couldn't possibly be wine, could it? She was too young to have that! "What's that?"

Elle
Elle offered Shauna a hand up before she realized the girl didn't need it. Instead, she tried her best to keep her own balance as the excited young woman launched into her arms. "Redtail! It's so good to see you again!"

Letting the girl have a look around, Elle settled herself a bit more comfortably upon the wide branch. "Ah, I'm so glad you like it! Anything you wanna do today, let's go do! But first, we eat."

Following Shauna's question to the bottle, Elle reached for it carefully...unstoppering it with a loud pop. "This? Well, taste it and find out!" No doublt Shauna would do so without being askeed twice. Hopefully it would be a nice surprise! It had taken Elle weeks to get the flavor of strawberry cupcakes into sparkling soda water!

Shauna
Shauna nodded and smiled. That sounded like a good plan! But what did she want to do today besides just hang out with Elle? Shauna put her head on Elle's shoulder and clung tightly to the woman, watching her grab the bottle and open it.

"Can't forget the food!" She giggled, her ears twitching at the sudden pop. "It's not pink champagne, is it? I can't drink that~!" The fox teased, sticking out her tongue. She looked around for a cup to pour the drink in; she couldn't drink straight from the bottle!

Elle
Hugging Shauna with one arm, Elle leaned out with a cup to pour some for the girl. "Can't and shouldn't are two different things! Here." Smiling she handed the little cup over, and reached to flip open the lid of the basket so the girl could see their selection.

Fruits, sandwiches, veggies...even some home made cookies, begging to be eaten! Taking another grape for herself, Elle nodded for Shauna to try the sweet, crisp drink. "When we're done here, we should take a walk! I saw a cute little shop, not too far from here."

Shauna
"You have a point~" But she knew her mother would not be pleased with Elle if she found out she was letting her drink! Shauna's ears perked up when she basket was opened, taking the cup in one hand and picking a sandwich out of the basket with the other.

Shauna smiled and nodded, looking around at the trees. She'd never had a picnic above the ground before! This was so cool. Taking a sip from the cup, Shauna's eyes suddenly widened and her ears perked up once again. "Cupcakes!"
