She was caught in a dark, hazy dream. Shauna knew it was a dream, somehow. Nothing made sense, nothing was clear, and everything around her had the 'feel' of dreaming. It was with this lucid understanding that she watched a bright light float towards her. Was she dreaming of death? Maybe. She reached out with one paw, and touched the soft, green tinged light. She could feel it on her fingers, how odd. One does not often feel, in dreams.
As soon as she touched it, the light disappeared, and the dream ended. There was nothing left to hold onto, to keep her from floating away, back into the realm of consciousness.
Though it seemed like a truly boring dream, it would leave a feeling inside of her, warm and urgent, and growing.

"Wait...come back..." Shauna murmured groggily as she awoke, not realizing her arm was up as if she were trying to grab at something in front of her. The fox groaned and squinted her eyes shut; there was no way she could be awake...or asleep. Maybe she'd been awake the whole time and didn't realize it.
She let her arm drop to lay across her stomach, eventually giving up on trying to go back to sleep and sat up with a slightly irritated sigh. Great. Now she was never going to get back to sleep. "What a weird dream..." Shauna murmured to herself, leaning back against her headboard and hugging her knees. She looked at the hand that'd touched the light, looking at the palm, the back and even between all her fingers. How weird...she could've sworn she touched something. Siiiiigh.
Shauna sat there staring up at the ceiling trying to get back to sleep, but the silence of the house...it drove her mad. The smallest creak of something from one of the creatures of the house made her skin crawl with fear, as if she really shouldn't be alone in a dark house. She eventually gave up on this and sat on her knees instead, turning around and reaching up to take her dreamcatcher off its hook above her bed. Was it broken? Such an odd dream should've been caught. Shauna frowned and traced her finger along the strings. Something wasn't right...but what?

Like a battered child reacting to a warm and friendly hero, the looped, twisted and knotted strings of the dreamcatcher began to glow a faint, pulsing blue while the cheery leather skeleton inched upwards, slowly, in temperature; it would be quite impossible for Shauna to let go of her "shield", whether she wanted to or not. In the dark and lonely bedroom, the dreamcatcher's twine glowed brighter and brighter until, finally, it was white-hot and blinding and filling the entire room with its lovely light and a low, soothing hum that only Shauna could hear.
And as abruptly as it had all begun, the bright light and low humming swallowed its own existence. When the light faded, Shauna was nowhere to be found. Only the dreamcatcher, smoking like it had just been pulled from a fire, sat in the dip of sheets where she had been only moments before.
---
With no preamble, nothing signaling the change in scenery, the moments bleeding together as usual, Shauna would find herself standing in the middle of a vast desert. There was no wind to stir the loose dunes, no rocks to lean against for a brief rest. The moon hung low in the sky, pregnant, bone-white and as smooth as a sheet of glass. If she had been given the fortunate physical trait of wings, Shauna probably would have taken to the skies to better assess her environment; there, with a bird's eye view of the desert, it would be easier to notice faint but visible tracks cut into the sand which seemed to mimic the familiar knitted design of a dreamcatcher.

Shauna's eyes widened. "Wh-what's going on?" The girl whimpered a little and tried to drop the dreamcatcher, but her fingers wouldn't move! What was going on?! Her ears lay flat on her head and she backed up against the headboard like that would help protect her from whatever her dreamcatcher was doing to her.
The humming did help a little, but only a little. It was hard to forget that your dreamcatcher was POSSESSED!
And then it was all over. She was in a new place. The fox blinked and stared around her at the desert. Where was she? "He...HELLO?" Shauna cupped her hands around her mouth to help project her voice, whimpering a little more when her voice merely echoed through the sky. This was scary...she was all alone in an empty desert. "IS ANYBODY OUT HERE?" She called again. Still no answer. The fox whimpered again and sat down where she was, looking around at the desert.
It was then that she noticed a dig in the sand. Was that a path? Shauna gasped and pushed herself to her feet, slipping just a little and kicking sand for a couple seconds as she propelled herself forward to the track. Was this like a path? Someone had to be around to make it! Her ears perked a little as she looked up and down the track, deciding she'd follow it.
Little did she know she'd be sent in several circles with no landmarks but her own footprints to tell her she'd already been that way.

Time was not an issue in the desert; it warped and bowed and twisted and twitched and jolted forward and came to a complete stop whenever it wanted to. As such, Shauna's journey down one of the faint paths of sand was immeasurable: it could have last ten seconds, ten hours, or ten years.
The moon, just as full and just as smooth as before, seemed to watch the young foxgirl, its own body doubling as a massive, pupil-less eye. The rays it cast were cold and silvery and bright, almost brighter than sunlight, and bathed the entirety of the desert in a sharp glow. Several steps ahead of Shauna would be a patch of moonlight, circular like a spotlight and bright enough to be seen inside the already illuminating moonlight. Equally kooky beside the spotlight of the moon was where it was positioned: directly underneath the moon's hovering body. It seemed to beckon to Shauna, begging her to step inside its cool light, offering something.

"Oh, Mister Moon...I wish you could talk." Shauna frowned and looked around as she walked. It was still so lonely even with the moon watching over her. At least she wouldn't need to worry about tripping and falling on something except it own two feet. She did slip on the sand every so often, flailing her arms as if she were trying to fly just to keep her balance. Damn footpaws!
The odd spotlight did throw her off a bit. Didn't the moon shine on all of the desert? Why was this one spot illuminated so brightly? The fox stopped at the very edge of the circle and just stared up at the moon, then the circle, then the moon again. Well this was odd! Shauna nervously tugged on some of her hair and took a tentative step into the circle, standing in the middle of it and closing her eyes as if waiting for something to happen.
...Well?
Hm...so far so good. Nothing seemed to be happening. With a sight of relief Shauna sat down right where she was, rubbing at her footpaws a little. They kinda hurt from all this walking.

At the very moment Shauna let herlf relax on the soft bed of sand, the sensation began.
At first, it was a gentle tingling that started at the base of her feet, crawling up her legs, over her stomach, across her arms, and inside her head, until her entire body was vibrating. Next, a peculiar numbness would overtake her hands and feet, making it quite impossible to move. Finally, the corners of her world would begin to dim as unconscienceness fought to take over. It wouldn't be long before Shauna was asleep.
When she would awake, a strange sight would greet her.

Oh my! That tickled! Shauna giggled just a little at first, letting go of her feet thinking that her rubbing was what was doing this. It felt like her legs were asleep! Maybe it was from all the walking...but it tickled! It never tickled like this when something fell asleep!
And then it spread, she giggled even more. What was going on now? She fell onto her side and curled up into a fetal position, laughing loudly at how much the tingling all over her body tickled. This was the weirdest sensation she'd ever felt! What was tickling her?!
...Wait...she couldn't move her hands and feet...this was bad! And everything was getting dark! What was going on? Her laughter subsided as she gasped again and tried to keep her eyes open, but there was no fighting the sleep that overcame her.
She had no idea how long she was asleep...but when she did wake up and tried to get back up to dust sand off herself something clearly wasn't right. Shauna hadn't seen things at this angle since...since...since she was still clawling! That was silly though! Clearly Shauna had pushed herself up to her feet! When she looked down, however, she saw not two...but...four furry paws?! And everything was furry! Everything! But something was still off. What was it?
Holy crap! She was transparent! And her body was behind her?! What?! That wasn't supposed to be possible! Shauna let out a screech and stumbled back, staring at her lifeless body with wide frightened eyes. This wasn't happening! There was no way!

Unfortuately, it was happening: Shauna had walked out of her own body in the form of a fox spirit, and there was no apparent way of getting back in. Shauna's body lay motionless in the cool sand, eyes closed and a peaceful smile on her face; if it weren't for the fact that she was entirely, completely still, it would look like she was sleeping.
Presently, a tiny giggle erupted from above Shauna. If she were to look up, an even stranger sight than before would be staring down at her: the moon, no longer smooth and plain, smiling quizzically. The moon had apparently sprouted a face, with a broad, flat forehead, narrow nose, silvery eyes and a small, sneaky mouth.
Hello, it greeted, although it did not move its; it would seem Shauna would be able to hear the moon's light and airy voice in her head.

Shauna screeched again and jumped in the air a couple feet at the sudden sound of another's voice. Who was it?! Who'd spoken?! Her ears flattened back against her head and she crouched down a little like a dog being scolded, hiding her tail between her legs and looking around with a little whimper. "Who said that? Who's there?!" It came from inside her head so Shauna really had no idea that all she had to do was look up to see the moon was the one speaking to her.

A light laugh, as sweet and innocent as a child's lullaby, floated about in Shauna's head. I am up here! the Moon purred, turning its silvery eyes upwards in jovial glee, thoroughly amused by the silly fox spirit's antics.
How did you get into my house? The question was simple enough, but the fact that the Moon, in all of its childish and light-hearted glory, had referred to the desert as its 'house' was strange.

Up here? Up where? Shauna blinked and decided to look up and see just who could be talking to her inside her head. The fox gasped when she saw that the moon actually had a face now! What? Moons didn't have faces! Normal moons at least...
House? What house? Shauna looked around for a moment to see what the moon was talking about, then she suddenly realized that the entire desert itself must have been what the moon was referring to. "Oh! I...uh...I...I'm sorry! I don't know how I got here! I have this dream catcher and it just started going crazy and next thing I knew I was here!" A faint frown formed on her face. "I just want to go home! But now I'm not even in my body anymore!" She pointed a paw at her lifeless body. "What do I do?"

The Moon seemed to sympathize with his new friend. A light frown formed carefully across his smooth features, while twin strips of light placed over his eyes arced down at the corners to mimic pity. That is very sad, it murmured at the end of Shauna's explination. A silence passed between the two before the Moon's face abruptly shifted: from sadness and pity it morphed into worry; its eyes would not sit still, instead quickly jumping from spot to spot across the desert.
You must be careful! My Father is not home, but if he catches you here he will be upset! He does not like it when unknowns are in his house! As if Shauna didn't have enough to worry about!

"Y-your father?" Shauna looked around again, her fur standing on end, suddenly a bit more afraid than she already was. The moon's father would be upset? Oh no! He sounded scary!
"I just want to go home!" Shauna whined, whimpering for a moment before she gave up and sat back with a sigh. Now what? She was stuck here, outside of her body, in a place she didn't know with only the moon to comfort her, and now apparently its father would get angry if he caught her here! This was terrible! She'd do anything to leave and go home right now!

The Moon said nothing for a while while it watched its new friend relaying it woes to what the Moon hoped was her new friend. Ohh, this was so exciting! The Moon was going to play with this wily fox spirit forever and ever now! Of course, there would be the issue of where the fox spirit would hide when its father returned, but for the time being, the Moon was content with--
Wait a second. Did the fox spirit say it wanted to go home? That same musical jingle smeared itself inside Shauna's head, although a tone of anger and desperation lurked below. Why would you want to leave? We are friends now! We can play now! You are going to stay here forever! Seemingly at random, the Moon's playful silver face erupted into fury, throwing blood red shadows over its clear body and darkening its once bright eyes.
You may not leave.
