heart Long intro below! Haha
Once upon a time, monsters roamed the Earth. These legends told of a time of horrors and bravery, when man and beast would clash or work together. As the story goes, powerful sorcerers contracted the Spirits of the monsters, looking for peace between the two races. A pact was made between the Spirits and mankind, agreeing to have Spirits bind themselves to a human, and the human bind themself in turn to that Spirit. The resulting bond was a step towards peace between the two races, as more and more people found themselves bound to a creature. Tolerance grew, and eventually a Golden Age was reached, as man and Spirit worked side by side.
But as with all legends, variations on the story exist, and the point after the Golden Age is where they begin. Some people claim some cataclysm occured, or diseases, or something along those lines. What it was is not certain, but what is known is that monsters dissapeared from existence, and mankind barely struggled through the ordeal, losing their records of the past, legends only remaining.
Millenia later, mankind now believes that monsters were a fabrication, and such things never happened. Or, at least, they did. However, during an archaeological dig into what appeared to be an ancient city uncovered seven eggs. They were in what appeared to be some sort of temple. The researchers hatched the eggs, revealing creatures that had not been active for thousands of years. More eggs quickly became discovered as people began to search, as a craze swept the world, a certain eagerness to discover upon it.
These monsters were the Spirits of old, who quickly began to renew the old contracts. A person can have up to three Spirits bound to them at any time. The relationships are often unique.
The world quickly realized the monsters knack for growing in unusual ways. The Spirits of old often enjoyed competing against each other to see who was strongest, the loser forfeiting a small part of their essence to the winner. By consuming the essence, the victor transforms, often growing stronger. The loser quickly heals the spiritual damage. This unique system gave way to a new burst of sport, pitting Spirits against each other in arenas. People come to enjoy watching, often placing bets on the battles, and prizes are given to the Spirits and their trainers.
However, that was all a year ago that these coliseums reigned in competition. Events have changed the face of the world since then. Many trainers had become aware of the presence of insurgent Spirits, wild monsters roaming the countrysides, attacking people, and demolishing buildings. The war in the shadows was small and well contained.
Everything changed. A horrible day came when dark rifts opened across the world and monsters came pouring out, terrorizing the world. These Spirits were destructive and seemingly master-less. Whole cities disappeared from the map as they became infested with Spirits that were out to destroy. Mortal conventions were of no use against these Spirits, not being powerful enough to stop them, and they were far to intertwined for it to be a true war.
Salvation came in the form of Trainers. They fought on their own terms, creating coalitions and organizations dedicated to the erase of the invading Spirits. The coliseums all but died out because of the fighting. However, over the past year, the Spirits have been beaten back so that life can once again return to a semblance of normality, despite the places gone and people dead. People have finally began to accept that not all Spirits are awful creatures, and the coliseums have re-opened, people once again eager to see Spirits battling, though the crowd is nowhere near as jubilant and more bloodthirsty, eager to see their tormentors bleed.
It is in this environment that Trainers now stand, trying to carve a name for them self. Barton Coliseum has re-opened and is now a free arena for all who would prove themselves. Organizations sponsor individual trainers. The world is a far more brutal place....
