Solo Journal Entry (Lab Report)
~~~~~~ Dear Doctor Kyou and the staff at Lab 305,
First and foremost, allow me to apologize for the lateness of this report. My daughter Ebony was apparently suppose to write something of this nature quite awhile back, but I suppose it somehow slipped her mind. Actually that might be a bad phrase considering our family’s current situation, but perhaps I should start things from the beginning.
As you all are aware of, Cordelia suffered some sort of emotional/mental breakdown sometime ago due to learning the true nature of her soul, that of a great Basilisk. To this day, I’m still not sure when exactly or how she came to be privy of this knowledge, but I assure you Ebony had every intent on telling Cordelia herself. I, of course, was told upon entering the household, but felt it not my place to say anything and to respect my daughter’s wishes. I urged her not to wait too long, but Ebony always said it wasn’t the right time or she wasn’t old enough yet to understand. But I suppose by now it’s a moot point. After Cordelia turned to stone and the longer she remained as such, Ebony’s mental and emotional states slowly declined. Eventually she would disappear, ironically the same day as Cordelia’s return.
While the police were searching for Ebony, I concentrated on Cordelia’s well-being and recovery. It was a bit touch and go there in the beginning. Her body didn’t seem to like being in a physical state for too long and she’d turn to smoke every now and then without warning, but that was preferable over stone. Little by little I saw her gain control over this ability, of which she now likes to flaunt every chance she gets. Aside from her physical well-being having returned to normal, I have noticed a great change in her personality wise though.
Cordelia is still somewhat a sociable creature, but the way she goes about it is completely different than before her incident. Before, she loved to go out any chance she could and mingle among the masses, hopeful to make new friends. But now she’s become a little more reserved, not as keen to jump the gun like she use to and often stays cooped up in her room playing games and such on her computer. Though I like that she’s taking an interest in technology, I fear she’s becoming too reliant on it for her social interactions. Hopefully our new shop will remind her what it’s like to have a real face-to-face conversation and relationship with others.
In more recent months, Ebony was found, but due to extensive injuries of mainly unknown origins, she fell into a coma. Cordelia was having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that her real guardian had returned. I don’t like to think she was unhappy with Ebony being found, more that she wasn’t sure how to be now that she was back. Since it has been such a long time, I think Cordelia’s had a lot of time to think about how they had left things off, so I think if nothing else, Cordelia just wants to bury the hatchet. Unfortunately, that is somewhat of an impossibility at current.
Ebony awoke from her coma not long after the New Year, but is suffering from amnesia. The doctor said this is actually the best we could have hoped for as she’d suffered major brain damage. He was worried she would have cognitive issues or worse, be in a vegetative state. We are happy she’s back, but it’s unfortunately a little bittersweet. Though Cordelia won’t admit it, the shock of having Ebony truly not recognize her has the girl all torn up inside. I really wish she would confine in me more or even just vent, but I suppose some things just aren’t that easy to talk about with an old man like me. It would be nice if she had someone closer to her own age to talk with, but it seems a lot of her close friends from before her incident have disappeared into the woodworks themselves. Though she did have a group of brothers she was hanging out with regularly until awhile back. Something must have happened between them and her though since Cordelia never brings them up anymore. Honestly, I don’t want her becoming more like Ebony or I. And I’m sure if my daughter could remember, she would agree. Her and I have spent most of our lives trying to distance ourselves from others, for one reason or another, but it’s not healthy. I see that now in my old age. People were meant to be with other people.
In ending, I hope I have made sufficient efforts in giving the Lab some insight into Cordelia’s current well being. If there is anything else I can contribute or if you have any advise or guidance you could provide, I would gladly appreciate it.
Best Regards,
Adrian Shade~~~~~~
Solo Journal Entry
~~~~~~ “Annnnddddd…done!” Ebony quietly exclaimed to no one other than the family’s fox fish Poseidon who was watching her merrily from his tank as she had flitted in and out of the dining room then. Readjusting a plate on the table, the dark haired woman looked to the clock. It was almost eight in the morning, so Adrian would be back from his morning run any minute now. She was very excited and somewhat nervous as she went back to the kitchen to do some clean up before the elder man got home. It had only been a couple weeks since she was released from the hospital, but already she was looking for something to do other than rest. Honestly, hadn’t she gotten enough rest from her coma? Given that was probably a poor way of seeing things, but Ebony was about to go mad from boredom. Any time she tried to do something to help around the house, Adrian just shooed her away and told her not to worry since she was still recovering. She wasn’t an invalid; she could still help with something! Thus today she made sure to get up as soon as she’d heard the man leave. He always left on an empty stomach and ate when he got back, but it was always coffee and toast. Ebony was starting to suspect the man didn’t cook much especially since it would have just been him. Apparently Cordelia didn’t eat human food, just smoke. It had taken some time for her to wrap her mind around the concept and didn’t completely understand until she actually witnessed the Raevan feed. It was quite fascinating to say the least. Still, Ebony figured the man could use a good old home cooked meal and they did say breakfast was the most important meal of the day right, so why not surprise him? Just then Ebony heard the front door open and could hardly contain her excitement. Leaning over the counter, she brightly said, “Good morning Adrian! Would you like some coffee?”Still somewhat out of breath, Adrian was checking his pulse as he walked in the door, the likes of which spiked suddenly as he was surprised to find someone actually awake at this hour and welcoming him home. Fumbling for words as he shut the door behind him, “Uh, good morning. And yes, thank you?” He hadn’t really meant for that last bit to sound so much like a question, he was just taken a back by this sudden development. As he met Ebony halfway towards the kitchen and she handed him his coffee, Adrian couldn’t help, but give the air a good sniff. “Do I…smell bacon?”Clasping her hands to her mouth eagerly, Ebony gave a tiny sound of amusement as she nodded. “I made breakfast.” Confidently she led him into the dining room where she’d set everything up perfectly. “There’s ham, home fries, some buttered toast, oh and I left some un-buttered in case you’d like to eat any with jam or marmalade and um…a frittata. Oh and fresh squeezed orange juice, but I’m sure you’re fine with coffee. Still, that’s what I got.”“I…see that…” Adrian replied slowly as he entered the room and saw the contents of said table. Yes, everything looked and smelled picture perfect, but past experiences had left the poor man somewhat traumatized. Ebony’s cooking skills had always been rather lacking. She could make simple things decently enough, but anything as complex as a frittata and well…it was probably best to eat out. Something about the activity always got to her nerves. Ebony would always end up reading things wrong somewhere along the lines and mix up the ingredients and/or their measurements. Thus something that looked perfect, but tasted horrible. “Here, sit down, sit down.” Before the elder gent could say anything, his daughter had all, but pushed him into a seat. Adrian gulped hard as he looked between the food and Ebony. Oh god, how could he possibly refuse now when she was standing there with those big silver eyes all a glow and expecting? Was there ever a time he could recall when she had looked this excited? Mmm…maybe way back when she was a kid and he was teaching her martial arts? The man sighed while silently apologizing to his stomach in advance for the terrible deed he was about to enact upon it. Somewhat pale faced and head hung slight, Adrian handed her the plate in front of himself and said, “Could…could you pass me some of that frittata?”Happily obliging, Ebony cut the man a slice and watched as he slowly took a bite. His expression went quickly from suspicion to utter surprise. To make sure he wasn’t imagining things, Adrian took another bite and was completely shocked. “Ebony…this is…delicious!”“You really think so?”“Trust me, you have never cooked like this before!” Quickly Adrian was sampling everything, looking every bit like one that had died and gone to heaven. “My god, everything is so good! How did you even think to cook this?”The woman gave a light chuckle as she poured herself a glass of orange juice. Before Ebony could take a sip, “Oh, I was poking around the kitchen when I came across a drawer full of recipes. I think they’re from someone named Aphismet? They all looked so good, but I thought these ones were best considering the time of day and what we had stocked. Who’s Aphismet by the way?”Adrian looked thoughtful as he chewed before swallowing, “Ah, that was your friend who was a chef. He, and his brother I believe, both had Raevans in their care as well. Hmmm, now that I think about it, I don’t think I ever got to meet any of them.”“I see.” Ebony’s previous enthusiasm had dropped a bit, as her expression became a tad sad. If that person was a friend, then where were they now? Why hadn’t they come to see how she was? Surely Adrian would have contacted people she’d known prior to let them know she was alive and well right? Even if he didn’t know them personally? That just seemed like the type of thing the man would do. Maybe they had a fight or something before her incident? She had so many questions, but not the confidence to ask them. Adrian frowned some as he could tell what kind of thought line her mind was going down right then. She was probably wondering what kind of horrible person she had been that none of her friends were coming by to see how she was now. He didn’t have the heart to tell her that he’d not been able to get in touch with a lot of them. The same had been true for Cordelia as well. Curiosity begged him to investigate deeper, but at the time he had his hands full. Besides, the government had been very clear upon his departure that he was “officially retired” and needed to leave things to current professionals where applicable. He was about to say something to cheer her up when the woman instead changed the topic herself. “Say Adrian, is Cordelia…okay?”Blinking in confusion, “Why? Did something happen?”“Well, I mean she went to bed pretty early the other night and didn’t get up again until well past one in the afternoon. And last night she went to bed even earlier than before, so I just thought maybe she’d gotten sick or…why are you laughing?!”Try as he might, the other couldn’t control his laughter. It had just been so random and the way she looked then was utterly adorable, so he just couldn’t help it. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry. And I assure you Cordelia is perfectly fine. Her sleeping this much during this time of year is normal.”“Normal?” Now it was Ebony’s turn to look confused. How was sleeping ten plus hours a day normal? Sure, Cordelia was a floating half a person, but still. Really? He had to explain this? Amnesia or not, sometimes Adrian questioned if this truly was his daughter. “Remember we explained what a Raevan was to you? And that Cordelia was the outcome of living smoke and a snake right?” When Ebony nodded in understanding Adrian continued. “So because she’s part snake and snakes generally hibernate this time of year when their environment’s climate drastically change like ours does, Cordelia becomes rather lethargic and needs more rest.”“Oh, right. That makes a lot of sense.” Ebony couldn’t help, but blush at her embarrassment of not having put two and two together like that. Well she did have a perfectly good excuse as she had a rather large amount of information to take in almost daily now it seemed. Still, “Sorry, I was just getting worried since well…she doesn’t really talk to me. She probably hates me for having disappeared and then going and forgetting everything.” She laughed, but her silver eyes weren’t smiling, they looked a little sad in fact. “She doesn’t hate you!” Adrian couldn’t help blurting out of which made Ebony jump some at its suddenness. Clearing his throat as a means to recompose himself, “She’s just trying to figure out this whole amnesia thing just like the rest of us. I promise, Cordelia doesn’t hate you.”“What don’t I hate?” yawned a half-awake Delia as she floated into the dining room then. She was rubbing the sleep from her eyes when they caught sight of the scenario before her and went wide. “You’re eating breakfast?! Granddad, we had plans today!”The elder man nearly choked on the ham he’d been eating when Cordelia came in and all, but chastised him. Quickly Ebony, handed him his coffee of which he took gratefully. After taking a long draw from his cup to wash the food down, Adrian finally responded. “I’m quite sorry Dove. Ebony surprised me with all this and well it was so good I couldn’t help myself and completely forgot about our plans.”The Basilisk had the ‘that’s a lame excuse old man’ look on her face then, which made Adrian feel even worse than he already did. “Look, it would be rude not to finish this now that we’ve started and Ebony worked really hard to make it. Besides, we’ve got all day since the shop is closed. So we can afford to change our plans to do something later tonight instead.”“No we can’t.” If Delia had legs, she’d probably be stomping one foot right about now just to emphasis her point. “Did you also forget about the three customs being picked up tomorrow that need finishing?”Seeming to have had enough of her attitude, Adrian gave the snake a condescending look as he started back into his breakfast. “Cordelia, those won’t even take that long…”“You always say to give yourself enough time in case of unforeseen problems!” the smoky girl couldn’t help, but keep fighting back for whatever reasons. “I don’t think I like your tone young lady.”“Well I’m not liking your attitude!”“Um, excuse me?”“What?!” barked the pair in unison as they both looked to Ebony. She couldn’t help blushing at suddenly being the center of attention. “W-what plans?”Now it was their turns to be embarrassed as they both realized that none of this was technically about them, but rather about Ebony. Adrian was the first to break and sighed, “I’m sorry Cordelia. I know today is important.”Suddenly Ebony was burning to know what was so special about today. “Important? What’s so important about today?”Looking away with irritation, Cordelia gave a somewhat cold reply. “February fifteenth is your birthday. We were going to surprise you by taking you to your favorite place to eat brunch. Well, what use to be your favorite place.”“Oh…” Ebony had no idea. But well of course she wouldn’t have since they were going to surprise her! And here she went and ruined everything. Head hanging slight, “…that was very thoughtful of you, thank you.”Seeing how his daughter was acting now ticked Adrian off. It wasn’t her fault things had turned out this way, after all she didn’t know! She shouldn’t be feeling bad, she should be happy, it was her birthday after all! Taking out his phone, “We can go to brunch another day. For now, I can make reservations for dinner tonight at the Gilded Gambino. Sound good?”Making a sound of annoyance, the dark Frei crossed her arms and floated out of the room. “Whatever, the surprise is already ruined. I’m going back to bed.”“Cordelia wait, CORDELIA!” Adrian shouted across the table as he hung up his phone quick before the other line could pick up. Frustrated, the elder Brit slumped back into his chair and held a hand to his head. Why did there need to be so much drama so early in the morning? Sighing, “I’m sorry Ebony. I forgot to mention that Cordelia’s moodier this time of year as well. More so this year it seems.” When she didn’t respond Adrian became worried and placed a hand gently on top of hers. “Don’t worry. She’ll get some more sleep and be fine by dinnertime. You’ll see.”Ebony simply gave an awkward nod of acknowledgement as Adrian went back to his meal and re-dialed the restaurant. Silver eyes stared down into the void of orange that was her drink, wondering if her and Cordelia would ever get past this hurdle and at least become friendly with one another if not familial. ~~~~~~

Solo Journal Entry (Memoirs of an Amnesiac - Entry One)
~~~~~~ To say it was an adjustment when Ebony came home from the hospital finally, would most definitely have been the understatement of the year. Things hadn’t exactly been going as smoothly as she had hoped. Though she was trying her best to keep calm and cheerful on the surface, what lurked below was often confusion, anxiety and frustration. Cordelia, although civil for the most part, was often distance and cold towards her newly returned guardian. Whenever the Brit thought she’d somehow made some progress in getting the girl to warm up to her, a strange expression crossed the Raevan’s face before her wall was back in place, stronger than ever. And as for Adrian, he was perfectly friendly and warm welcoming, yet perhaps was overdoing it in the protective father department. She understood that even though she felt perfectly healthy and fine ninety percent of the time, that the doctors had highly cautioned her not to push herself too much, too fast. But honestly, she was more than capable of doing any of a number of chores around the Shade residence, heck she could even help out at the shop, yet Adrian was always so quick to dismiss the notion. The excuse was always the same, just concentrate on your recovery. “Uggghhh! I’m not made of glass you know!” the woman exclaimed to no one in particular as she fell backwards on her bed, rubbing frustratingly at her dark head with a sigh. With a bit of a pout and an uninterested glance, she surveyed her room for what seemed like the millionth time. Though it was her room and everything in it belonged to her as well, it almost always just seemed like she was visiting a friend’s home, comfortable and cozy, but not to the extent that one’s own actually felt. Of course Ebony knew this feeling was quite silly since this was her home, yet without any memories to reinforce the notion, the place often made her feel like an intruder instead. With a dejected sigh, Ebony reached for the book on the nightstand that she had currently been reading. Before she knew it, the thick text had slipped from her fingers and created a soft thud as it dropped on the floor. She let loose yet another sigh, this one more exhausted sounding. Positioning herself so she hung over the side of the bed, Ebony reached to retrieve the book. She was just wrapping her delicate digits around it when the sight of something shiny from under the bed caught her eye. “What’s that?” she muttered to herself as she slid off the bed, leaving the book behind. Carefully, Ebony crawled underneath and shimmied the object out. Once out, she sat back and examined the thing. “Huh, some sort of storage box? No…material is too nice to be something like that, plus it’s kind of hefty. Mmm, fire box?” The Brit shook the container slight and felt something shift inside. “Well whatever it is, there is definitely something in it. But question is, how do I open it?” Ebony was turning the box around and around, but it didn’t have any sort of simple, traditional lock. There was an unusual spot on it that might be a button, thus she pressed it. She waited a minute, but of course, nothing happened. With a huff, “Well maybe I just need to press and hold it instead.” Not ready to give up just yet, Ebony pressed her thumb to it and held it there in hopes that would open it. As it was, the woman had a bit of dumb luck as the button hadn’t really been a button at all, but a finger print scanner. Thus holding her thumb there long enough allowed the device to recognize her print and it beeped in approval before popping right open. Taken off guard by the thing’s suddenness, Ebony fumbled with the case and dropped it. Her face cringed as she looked into the box, hoping that whatever was inside hadn’t been broken due to her clumsiness. What lay inside was nothing as fragile as she might have imagined, but they could definitely be considered priceless. At least to their owner they were. Scattered about inside were tons of loose photographs and just lurking beneath was a book emblazoned with the name ‘Shade’ in big, bold, silver letters. Ebony’s eyes shone bright with astonishment on her find, her hands gravitating to the first photos on top. The first was of a group of people she didn’t recognize; one man with short, white hair and the biggest smile you’d ever seen, a younger lad with messy, brown hair and a smile much more forced and reserved than the latter’s, and two Raevans, one black and red, the other red and green. Flipping over the photo, the woman found something scribbled on the back. “The Delarans…left to right…Aphismet, Isikoro, Rivener and Eirdirsceol.” Despite having faces and names, Ebony still had no clue who these people were aside from the fact that they were obviously part of the Lab. Though they must have meant something to her if she had photos of them, right? The second photo was of Cordelia and another Raevan girl with cat ears. The two were apparently having a blast trying on clothes in some store, the girls caught in a moment of joyful laughter. Once again flipping the picture over, Ebony muttered, “Cordelia and Lucia.” It was hard to explain, even though the snake hadn’t changed much since this was taken, the Brit felt that this photo must have been one of the girl when she was much younger. Perhaps it was because the energy and expression she exuded then was much more carefree seeming, like that of an innocent child. The Cordelia she knew was someone who always seemed moody and on guard, nothing like the smiling Frei in this picture. Placing those two pictures gently aside, Ebony finally dipped her hands in and tenderly removed the book as if it were the most fragile piece of glass. Carefully she traced the letters on the front before opening it. What she found was truly remarkable and humbling, pictures of a very young looking Adrian with a small girl that must have been her. The first part of the book was filled with pages on pages of just the two of them. She watched as the years passed and she grew from a tiny, black haired pipsqueak to a strong looking and seemingly over confident woman. “Geez, what’s with the purple hair?” she remarked in slight amusement as she wondered what sort of person she actually had been before the amnesia to allow such a loud and vivacious hair color. The next sections made her pause briefly as she found pictures of Cordelia either being shy and using Ebony as a shield to hide from the camera or of her just plain old hugging her for dear life. Something tugged at her heart as a lump formed in her throat that she tried to disperse. They had looked so close, then why were things like they were now? She was lucky if the Basilisk so much as spoke to her without prompt let alone look at her. It made the Brit rather sad. She wanted to get along better with Cordelia, yet she hadn’t the foggiest idea of how to go about it. Ebony went a few more pages in the album, finding more pictures of Cordelia spending time with Adrian, before resigning herself to a deep sigh and closed the book. She sat there a moment, tapping the spine in thought. Why were these all hidden away like this? Had she not liked them? The woman shook her head. No, that didn’t make any sense. Then why go to all the trouble of putting them in a book and then putting that in a safe box? She must have treasured them so much that she couldn’t bear if anything should happen to them. Even if Ebony could understand that reasoning, it still felt like an utter shame for them to be horded away like this. Photographs were mean to be shared and looked at. An idea suddenly came to fruition when she realized that there were no family portraits anywhere in the house that she could remember. The black haired woman eyed the clock quick, counting the time she had left before Adrian and Cordelia would be home from work. Assured that she had enough time, Ebony nodded her head and scrambled from her sitting position on the floor. She had her project for the day and there was no time to lose! ~ ~ ~ “We’re home!” Adrian announced as he walked through the front door, juggling a bag of groceries as he removed his key from the lock. “Ugh, finally!” the raven haired Frei exclaimed exhaustedly as she floated in after her grandfather and straight to the kitchen counter to dump the bag she’d been carrying. Cordelia then took one of the seats there and laid her head on the cool marble top. “Granddad please, I beg you, never have us do groceries right after work ever again.”The elder man gave a chuckle as he placed his bag down next to Cordelia’s on the counter and began putting things away. “It’s much easier than making a separate trip. And I promise you it won’t always be that busy. We just happened to get unlucky this time around.” Delia merely rolled her grey eyes as if to say she didn’t believe him. Yet her expression changed suddenly when a thought came to mind then. Looking around warily, “Is Ebony home?” It was unusual for them to get back and not be greeted almost immediately by the dark haired woman. Adrian shrugged as he continued his unpacking of the groceries, “Perhaps she’s in the bathroom?”Something nagged at the snake as she quickly got up to search. “Ebony?” Cordelia asked as she peeked into the dining room. Immediately her breathing seized up as the Basilisk froze before the entrance. The reason the female human hadn’t answered them was because she was currently pre-occupied with hanging a rather large portrait, a family portrait of the three of them to be perfectly precise. Though the picture itself was probably something to pause and gawk at, it wasn’t what had stopped the Basilisk. No, it was the person balancing ever so carefully as she adjusted the monstrous thing, sporting the exact same shade of purple hair as the mirrored image in the portrait. “There. Perfect.” Dragging her arm across her forehead to wipe away the sweat from her exertion, Ebony sighed greatly before hopping down from the stepladder she’d been using. Turning around, “Oh, hey Delia! Welcome home. Sorry for the late reply. How was work?” Ebony’s smile faltered as she neither saw nor heard any sort of response from the Raevan. Silver eyes blinking in confusion, the woman approached slow and waved her hand in front the girl. “Uh, ello? Cordelia? What’s wrong?” Suddenly she was whipping her head back and forth between the Frei and the picture. Was it crooked? Did she not like it? “What’s going o-whoa!” Adrian exclaimed as he entered the room. At first he was surprised at seeing such a big picture of their family hanging in there, but the image suddenly brought back a lot of memories and caused the man’s heart to give an unusual squeeze in fondness. It didn’t last long though when he saw his daughter. In his excitement, the elder Brit gently grabbed the woman by her shoulders and made her face him so he could get a much better look. “Ebony! Your hair! It’s pur-wait, wait, wait! Did your memories come back?!”Still a bit confused about Cordelia’s current reaction, or rather lack thereof, it took a moment for Ebony to register that Adrian was asking her something. “Huh? What? Oh! No…” She looked away slightly, feeling bad for accidently giving the man’s hopes up. Was that why Cordelia reacted as she had? Taking a strand, Ebony began to play with it some. “…I just found all these photos you see and well…I was curious about the color and why I seemed to like it so much…before…” She trailed off then as she started to get embarrassed. Covering her face and shaking her head, the color shook right out and quickly became her original black again, thanks to her little nanobots. “I knew it! It’s weird right? I’m so sorry!”Taken aback by his daughter’s sudden confession and then change of heart regarding her hair color, Adrian quickly released her shoulders and apologized. “No, no! It’s fine! Honestly! I’m sorry I put you on the spot like that. I just got carried away was all.” Releasing a huge sigh, Adrian wrapped one arm around Ebony in a side hug while his other was propped on his waist while he admired the portrait. “I don’t know where you found the pictures, but this looks great! Just the thing this place has been begging for, huh Cordelia?”The whole time the exchange between her guardians was happening, Cordelia had been stark still and deathly quiet. So many emotions had begun to swirl up inside her then that she wasn’t sure which one was the dominant one. That was until her grandfather addressed her so happily. Why? Why was he always so darn happy? Acting like it was perfectly okay that Ebony didn’t remember a damn thing. With tightly clenched fists and as much bitterness as any piece of kale could ever hope to have, “It was better without the photos.” Both humans couldn’t keep the look of hurt from their faces, yet Adrian’s was the one to move quickest into disappointment. “Cordelia…” he began but was soon cut off by the smoky Frei. “I’m tired. Good night.” Was all that was said before the Raevan was gone, leaving the two behind to deal with a feeling of emptiness. Honestly, Ebony was hoping that having the pictures up around the house would help her memory return more quickly. Of course she had no idea when or if that would even happen, but she hoped. That way maybe she could finally understand and then maybe Cordelia would stop being in so much pain. Sighing in defeat, “It is getting pretty late. I should head to bed as well. Good night Adrian.”The man opened his mouth, only to pause and then change his mind about his response. “Of course. Sleep well Dove.” After he was left alone, Adrian looked up at the portrait once more and sighed deeply. He barely recognized this family anymore. ~~~~~~
Solo Journal Entry (Growth Quest - Sigel - Track One)
~~~~~~ Irritation. That would probably be the closest word to describe Cordelia’s current state of emotions. Ever since she’d returned home from her ordeal with LuLu awhile back, things had just never really settled back to normal for the smoke Frei. Tch, normal? What exactly did that even look like? Normal people don’t get kidnapped and used as pawns in a psycho’s sick love game. Normal people have friends, of whom they actually spend time with. Normal people don’t go round and round wondering if they’re normal, they just are. Delia sighed deep as she continued wiping down cups and glasses behind the bar, her grey eyes idly taking in the entirety of the Silver Fox’s main floor. It was still a bit early on a weekday and thus there weren’t that many customers in just yet, so things were kind of slow for the moment. Honestly, her job here was the only thing probably keeping her mentally grounded most days. Her eyes briefly met with Ebony’s on the floor as she was chatting with one of their regulars and before the girl could fully look away, she saw the human flash her a warm smile. That was going to cost her. As the snake gripped the glass in her hand tighter, she grimaced in discomfort. The situation at home was not getting any better. In fact, Cordelia could safely say it was probably getting worse. The holidays had been pretty tough for her to get through, Christmas in particular. That one had always been one of Ebony’s very favorite times of the year. Adrian begged, pleaded and even tried to bargain with her to be less combative and help out since he wanted this year to be the best since all Shades were finally accounted for. She scoffed light, cracks beginning to form in the glass she was holding so tight then. Her grandfather was wrong, as not all members of their family were there, not completely anyway. Thus with every decoration that went up, a memory flaring hard in her mind with no one to reminisce with, it wasn’t long before the Raevan’s patience wore thin and she could no longer play along with Adrian’s wishes for a “merry” Christmas. She spent that day, as well as the eve and day after, alone in her room, sulking. “Miss Cordelia!” exclaimed a slightly frustrated male voice. Nigel, one of the café’s AIs, finally garnered the Basilisk’s attention by physically projecting himself directly in front of her, most of his body obscured by the bar which made it seem like he was fused with it. “s**t!” The poor glass Cordelia was gripping had finally gave way at the sudden surprise of a perturbed blonde before her eyes and cut her hands. Annoyed by the glass and Nigel, the Frei shook her hands as they turned to smoke, watching the bloodied shards that had previously imbedded themselves into her skin fall to the counter with tiny tinks. Once she was satisfied that all foreign objects were gone, she returned her hands to a normal state and sighed. If only she could restore the integrity of them as well when changing forms, but alas that was not the case as the cuts were still very much there and very much bleeding. Moving to retrieve the first aid kit, the smoky girl growled at the AI, “What the actual ******** Nigel? You have a two floating in your code or something?!”“I am programmed to remind you to please watch your language while on duty Miss Cordelia.” Re-projecting to a more convenient spot next to her, the AI adjusted his glasses. “However, I will apologize for your injury. Though it was my intent the whole time to prevent such an act from occurring.”Rolling her eyes as she bandaged up her hands, “Yeah, great job on that. Next time, just say something.”“I had been calling to you for the past fifteen point five seconds beforehand with no avail, thus I deduced a more direct method would yield better results. I did not account for the degree of distraction and absentmindedness that you were experiencing, thus I do apologize. After all, your safety is one of my top priorities.”“Translation, sorry your own stupidity caused you pain. Got it, thanks.” The girl replied with bitter sarcasm as she made to return the first aid kit to its original spot. Frowning, “That is not at all what I said or meant Miss Cor-“ Nigel abruptly stopped mid-sentence as an unusual sight caught his ice blue eyes. “Apologizes, but I do not understand why Miss Shade is displaying such strange behavior as of moment?”“What?” Confused by his words, Delia searched for her guardian and found her near a table towards the center. The woman had her back partially to them, blocking most of the view of the customer she was currently engaged with. Though she was smiling cheerfully for the person, the Raevan could plainly see how strained it was as well as the flagrant way she was trying to wave them down while trying not to have the customer notice. “Ugghhh, again?!” With great effort as well as reluctance, the smoky girl pushed herself from the bar and began her trek to the table. Since the beginning of the year as well as after much negotiating with Adrian, Ebony had started helping out at the café. It was great since they could always use the help and Ebony really seemed happy to finally be getting out of the house more. Yet, it was also not without its downfalls as well. Without her memories, Delia’s guardian had become too soft and gentle of a person. She was always too eager to please and never wanted to inconvenience others if possible. And that was precisely the reason why she always seemed to get herself into these awkward situations with some of their male clients. “Excuse me, but Ebony, you’re needed at the bar.”“Oh! Okay, thank you for telling me. I’m so sorry sir, but I have to go. Have a great day!” said the dark haired woman as she all, but dashed away like her life depended on it. Delia had to keep herself from rolling her eyes then and instead refocused on customer service. Giving a slight bow, “My apologizes sir, but if there’s anything I can do for you, please let me know. My name is-““Cordelia...” said a familiar sounding voice. Confused, the Frei looked up and finally took a good look at the customer before making the most displeased face ever. “Cameron?! Ugh, what are you doing here? Aside from sexually harassing my mother that is?”“Yeah, nice to see you too Dells." Obviously not enthused at all about the way he was just greeted, the demi-human gave her an equally displeased expression. Of course that look didn’t last too long once his mind caught up to what the Raevan uttered last. “Wait, what?! Mother?!” he replied in shock as he looked between Ebony back at the bar and Cordelia in front of him now. Leaning back, “Huh, guess that explains why I was so smitten with her at first glance. You know, for being adopted, you two look an awful lot a like. How is that?”“And now you’re harassing me. Great. Please do show yourself out and never return. Thanks.” Was the tart reply Cordelia extended to the man before turning to return to the bar. “Delia, I’m sorry, please wait!” Cameron exclaimed as he jumped up and clasped onto her slender wrist. The action garnered a low growling hiss from the snake and slight rattle of her wings. This b*****d was so lucky they were inside the Silver Fox right then. “Look, for my family’s business, I’m trying really hard to stay composed right now, but you are really trying my patience. Let. Go.” Cordelia said in a low restrained voice as she jerked her arm out of his grasp and straightened her uniform. Cameron quickly backed away some with his hands up in show of him respecting her wishes, to an extent that was as he was obviously not leaving just yet. “Okay okay! Sorry, just, please listen.” The gorgon took a deep breathe before continuing. “You’re probably thinking my coming here wasn’t by coincidence and you’re right! Word’s been getting around about this place like crazy and when I heard your gramps was the owner, well then, I figured it would be my best shot at finally seeing you again.”As he said those last words, the drummer tried to reach a hand out to caress her cheek, but annoyed and angered as the snake was, Cordelia was quick to shut down whatever quaint moment he was concocting by slapping it away. “Fine. You’ve seen me. Now leave.”A little shocked by her outright hostility and albeit a tad saddened by it, Cameron held his hand brief before allowing it to fall to his side. “I just wanted to apologize. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to do for months, but you weren’t answering any of my calls or texts. No, not just mine. You weren’t talking to any of us. I know Seth and I put you through some real s**t, we deserve your hate. But to cut ties with Evan and Gideon as well? That was pretty cold, even for you.”She was silent, but Cordelia’s deepening frown was more than enough to show how much she had regretted that choice. Yet, the brothers were so close that it wouldn’t be easy to be friends with some without seeing or hearing of the others. At the time, it would have been too much for her heart to handle. In a sense, it was still too hard to be face to face with Cameron right then even after all this time apart. The Basilisk opened her dark lips, only to shut them almost immediately, unable to give words to her thoughts and feelings just yet. “C-Cordelia…” the demi-human stuttered. “Can’t we start over? Please? I…they…we miss you.”The snake could feel the tugging of her heartstrings and it was most uncomfortable. She wanted to forgive, but there was also a part of her that was unyielding in that department. She’d been terribly hurt, by people she considered friends. Suddenly she was hyper aware of the glancing stares they were getting from the other customers and staff as they tried not to seem completely interested in the two’s heated conversation. Rubbing her face in a most frustrated manner, “If I say I’ll consider it, will you please leave now?”His dulled eyes suddenly sparked with hope and the spiky haired male quickly nodded his agreement. He had also tried to clasp her hands in his as he did so, but to no avail as Delia once more swatted him away. “All right then! I’ll think about it. Now go!” Of which Cameron did so, but not without flashing the happiest of grins her way with a wave. The dark Frei sighed heavily as she held a hand to her shaking head and finally returned to her duties at the bar. Picking up another glass to clean, Cordelia could feel Ebony’s grey eyes on her and how she was practically bursting at the seams with questions. Growling towards the human, “What?”Bounding with excitement that Cordelia was actually acknowledging her for once, Ebony gave the girl an amused sort of smile. “Thanks for your help.”“Yeah, sure, whatever.” the Raevan grunted as she continued on with her work. “Also, stop being so accommodating to the creeps who hit on you. It’s annoying.”The British woman’s smile dropped slight at being scolded, and rightfully so. Hanging her head a bit in shame, “I know. But well…they are customers. And-““The customer is not always right.” The Basilisk quickly interjected, her point being driven more to home with her banging the glass she was cleaning onto the counter. The likes of which made Ebony jump slight. Stormy eyes narrowing some, “You’re a Shade, and as such, an owner of this establishment. Our standards are high, staff and clients alike. The sooner you realize that, the better.”Ah yes, there it was, that damn awkward silence between them once more. And yet again, it was Cordelia whom had pried the gap between them even wider. Why did she keep doing that? It wasn’t like the woman had said anything particularly wrong. Perhaps she was just annoyed with the whole Cameron thing and was projecting her frustration onto her guardian? Maybe a little, but Delia knew it was so much more than just that. Though Cordelia was mentally kicking herself, Ebony wasn’t done trying yet. With a small smile, “You’re right. I’ll do better next time, promise.”Delia frowned as that wasn’t exactly what she wanted to hear, at least not in that sad sounding voice with that equally heartbreaking expression. Frustrated with herself, all the snake could reply with was, “Yeah, well, see that you do.”Another moment of silence passed between them before the Brit braved a question. “Was that boy a friend of yours?”At first it didn’t seem like the Frei would answer, but then a smoky wisp escaped her lips. “It’s complicated.”Surprised that Cordelia had actually answered, Ebony pursued the conversation in earnest. “Were you dating?”Banging yet another container on the counter, the Raevan had finally had enough and made her way upstairs. “Break.” she uttered painfully. “Oh…okay. Enjoy.” She said as she watched the snake disappear. Ebony sighed in defeat. It seemed she had pushed her luck too far, too soon. Half jokingly, “One step forward, five steps back…”~~~~~~

Solo Journal Entry (Growth Quest - Sigel - Track Two)
~~~~~~ The café had been non-stop busy since the beginning of the month and for once in a long, long while, Cordelia could honestly say she was looking forward to spending a weekend off at home with her guardians. Since the Silver Fox’s debut, steady business had been pouring in, mostly due to Cordelia’s diligent online presence and of course word of mouth. A little cocky at their family’s minor success, the smoke Raevan had decided on her most daring promotion yet, a Valentine’s Day special! Running from the first up to the very day itself, the café hours would offer limited, romance themed bento boxes. These all came in a custom, reusable container, which would make them highly sought after to collect. But of course, Delia had to add much more of an incentive as the boxes had a gatcha attached to them as well. Most had Nigel or Glitch, the café’s resident AI’s c** mascots, as cards inside with a special note on the back to make it feel like they were the ones that made the meal for the customer. The rares would be ones with Ebony, Adrian or herself. As for the club hours, they’d made a few virtual versions of old party games some would remember from when they were teens, such as ‘Spin the Bottle’ and ‘Truth or Dare’. Adrian had even created special drinks for the holiday promotion, dubbing them his ‘Love Potions’. Though she’d been excited to do this Valentine’s event and pretty happy with all the positive feedback on it, Cordelia hadn’t expected just HOW popular it would be. The bentos sold out almost immediately everyday and when they switched over at night, the bar was always packed with requests for the specialty drinks. After the current rush had ended and Cordelia had handed over the last of the bento boxes, the Basilisk couldn’t help but physically dissolve into a Raevan-shaped heap behind the bar with a deep sound of exasperation mixed with relief. Ebony couldn’t help the escape of a chuckle as she witnessed the scene. Although somewhat worn-out herself, the dark-haired woman was still able to manage a warm smile. “Just one more day. Or rather, half a day now I suppose.” she joked. Seeing as there was no one else for them to wait on currently, the Brit decided it would be fine if she joined Cordelia on the floor for just a few moments. The smoky girl gave the other an arched brow, but said nothing about her sudden companion behind the bar. The two Shades sat like that for a couple moments in silence, but for once it wasn’t an awkward one, in fact one could say it was rather nice and relaxing. Indulging in the rare moment, Cordelia rested the back of her head against the bar and closed her eyes. Eventually, a soft humming reached the Frei’s ears and due to its familiarity, Delia couldn’t help but hum along. It was a song she hadn’t heard in a long time. Something her guardian use to sing to her when she was younger, something to soothe the soul… “Ebby!” the snake exclaimed suddenly as her hands grabbed hold of the woman’s shoulders. Her grey eyes bore into Ebony’s shocked ones, begging the question, had the Brit’s memories returned!? Somewhat startled by the outburst, the other female wasn’t sure how to respond. She thought maybe the girl wanted to say something, but when she didn’t and the atmosphere began to take the awkward route once more, Ebony gave a nervous sort of smile, “S-sorry Delia. Did my humming bother you?”The odd hope that had fluttered into her chest quickly abated, her hands slipping from their grasp of Ebony’s shoulders and returning once more to her side. It wasn’t the response she’d wanted, and yet…what sort of response was the snake hoping for once her guardian’s memories returned? If they returned at all that is. With a defeated sigh, for she was far too exhausted to be her usual moody self, Cordelia looked away and replied, “No…it was actually…nice…” She allowed the silence to fill the space once more since the memory of the song was both lovely and bittersweet. Ebony was sensing that perhaps the good moment had passed and decided not to tempt fate anymore than she had and began to rise to her feet. It surprised her when Cordelia reached out to grab her arm, as if to say ‘don’t leave’. Grey eyes blinked questioningly as she tilted her head to the side in thought at the girl’s action. “Uh, sorry!” Delia uttered as she quickly let go of Ebony’s arm, her mind having caught up with the moment. The Raevan blushed, a bit embarrassed since she hadn’t meant to do that at all. In a rush to cover up her faux pas, “I-I meant to ask what you wanted for your birthday? I mean, what you wanted to do!? Since you know…we’ve been so busy here to actually plan…” She left out the part about how Adrian had been purposely postponing planning it since he was a bit gun shy after last year’s debacle. In an effort to suppress a laugh, as Cordelia was being awfully cute then, Ebony brought her hand to her chin as if deep in thought. When she knew she could finally answer without worry of bringing forth the Frei’s rage, the Brit flashed the brightest of smiles. “I don’t need anything fancy. A day off with my family is gift enough.”Though touched by the sentiment, Cordelia couldn’t help being just a tad bit sassy. Muttering lowly with a pout, “…Even so, it’s your birthday…should be a little greedy…”Dusting her pants off as she stood, Ebony replied, “What was that?”“Nothing!” Cordelia exclaimed before rising from the floor as well. Before either female could get another word out, a group of extra loud customers came charging straight for the bar. “Scram Cam! I got here first!”“As if Seth! You’re the one brother she doesn’t want anything to do with! Save yourself the trouble and get gone!”“Oh for the love of…are you guys four? We’re in public you know, can you not be so embarrassing?”“Butt out Evan!” the two older Medusa brothers shouted at their younger sibling as they continued to glare and shove one another. Shuffling side to side, not really knowing what she should do to help ease the situation, Ebony meekly said, “Now now, there’s no need to be so rowdy. What seems to be…” The woman trailed off as she sensed a great tension next to her grow ten fold. Nervously, she backed slightly away when the low hissing started. “What the ******** are you three doing?”All at once the noise stopped as all three brothers stole a look at Cordelia and gulped. The Raevan already had a dangerous sort of look to her given the nature of her soul and fel essence, yet when she was truly pissed, that aura only seemed to intensify. Though it was taking everything she had not to cause even more of a scene, Cordelia’s pupils had dialed back to mere slits and her hair was doing that eerie, floaty smoking thing. Folding her arms far too precisely, “Well?”At first, no one dared to move or make a sound, too afraid of what the Basilisk might do. Things quickly changed when they saw her narrow her eyes further towards them and her hair began dancing wildly, showcasing the Raevan’s ire at them not answering her. All at once, Cordelia found a bouquet of red roses and a huge, heart-shaped box of chocolates presented towards her, both Cameron and Seth looking somewhat flushed in the face as each one held out an item to her. Like the deflating of a balloon, Cordelia’s eyes went wide with surprise as her hair fell back into its normal state. At a loss for words, the dark femme merely asked, “What’s all this?”Both still looking somewhat embarrassed, the singer and drummer mirrored one another then by sighing deep and frowning at her response. Really, did they need to spell it out for her? Luckily (or not so, depending on whom you asked) Evan was there to help things along, all the while poking fun at it of course. Holding his sides as a peel of laughter burst forth, Evan exclaimed, “Oh my god Cordie! Did you forget it was Valentine’s Day!? Obviously they came to woo you!” That earned him not only a smack to the back of the head, but a good punch in the arm as well. Mouthing the words ‘worth it’, Evan took up a stool in front of Ebony, of who quickly offered to get him something for his ‘punishments’. “Nah, I’m okay. Happens all the time. But I would love to try that special milkshake you all are promoting!”Meanwhile, Cordelia was sort of dumbfounded as the two older half-gorgons continued to hold out their trinkets of affection towards her with obvious anticipation glinting in their eyes. What were these idiots thinking? Were they just expecting her to accept these gifts? And for what purpose exactly? Acknowledgement of her forgiveness? As if! She may be on speaking terms with them once more, but that did not mean she’d forgotten! Sighing, the girl pushed the gifts back at the two men. “Look, it’s sweet and all, but I can’t accept these.” Cordelia had been terribly hurt by both Seth and Cameron, something she was willing to try and work past so that they could all remain friends, but if it was going to cause problems like this, perhaps she should bow out now once and for all. “Guys, I don’t want to cause trou-“Slamming his open palms on the counter, Cameron interrupted. “You are NOT trouble Delia!”“For once, Cam and I agree. If anything, we’re the problem…” Seth sighed as he looked away, fingers running through his hair. “But you’ve got to understand. It’s not easy, trying to ‘just be friends’.”The drummer nodded his head quickly in agreement, “Obviously we both came here thinking we could use Valentine’s as a way to convince you to pick one of us to date. And judging by how things are currently going…probably the worst idea either of us has ever had. But can you blame us for trying?”“Cordelia, I know we’ve hurt you and should just count our blessings that you are even willing to speak to us again, but…” As Seth spoke his expression soften and he gently smiled towards the Frei, a finger tracing a caress upon her cheek. It could have been a very nice moment, had Cameron not intervened by grabbing his brother’s wrist sharply then. Grip tightening as his face tensed, the drummer tried not to lose his cool again. “Hey Bro, what the hell do you think you’re doing right in front of me?”Yanking his arm out of the death grip, Seth’s golden eyes immediately returned the slight ferocity his brother’s were aiming at him in that moment. “I can do as I please. I don’t answer to you.”“Oh!? Looks like someone needs to learn how to respect his elders!”“Older or not, I don’t respect jackasses!”As the arguing started up once more, this time with a lot more hissing involved, Ebony and Cordelia exchanged looks before looking to Evan for help. But of course, the youngest Medusa brother would be no such help, only delighting at his brothers predicament as he sipped happily upon the milkshake Ebony had made him. The Basilisk sighed heavily as she shook her head. She should have known the only reason the blonde was there was purely for his own amusement. Ebony lightly tugged on the Raevan’s sleeve, “S-should we call the cops?”Another sigh, “That’s our last resort.” Quickly, the snake’s phone was out, a number already dialing. “Hey Gideon, it’s Delia. How fast can you get to the Silver Fox?”~ ~ ~ “I’m terribly sorry for all the trouble my brothers have caused you and your family.” A tall, dark-haired male said as he bowed his head in shame. “Now now, don’t beat yourself up too much. Here, have some tea.” Ebony said as she presented the young man with a warm cup. “Besides, not like you can really control the actions of others. Though we do appreciate you coming down to help diffuse the situation.” Spying another customer needing help, “Ah, excuse me.”After her guardian attended to the café’s business, “Seriously Gee, you got here pretty fast, I can’t thank you enough. Though…I hope we didn’t keep you from anything important.” The Raevan looked a bit sheepishly at the demi-human then. She knew he was awfully busy with work, school and the band, so would hate it if they had inconvenienced him in some way. Blowing light on the steaming cup before taking a sip, “I was just helping our dad with some things. He understood completely when I had to leave so abruptly as it was my brothers.” Gideon frowned as some errant thought crossed his mind before speaking again. “Are you sure you still want to associate yourself with us?”The Frei was taken aback some by the sudden question as she hadn’t actually expected any of the brothers to just straight out ask that aloud, let alone have it be Gideon of all people. Though she probably shouldn’t have been so surprised as he had always been the type to never pussyfoot around things. With being a man of few words, he liked to be straightforward and direct about his queries as well as his statements. Still, when it came to any of the emotional stuff, he tended to shy away. So this was a bit unusual and awkward. Cordelia fidgeted a bit as she wasn’t quite sure how to answer, yet when she saw how the other’s face held a look of intense anxiousness as he patiently awaited her response, the snake’s heart tugged slight. Here was this normally poker-faced guy looking as worried as a new father-to-be in a maternity ward of a hospital. Expression sincere, Delia reached a hand out to place atop his in reassurance. “You shouldn’t worry so much, it’ll give you wrinkles.” She smiled at her own slight jest, “Besides, I don’t blame you or Evan for anything. And I really do want to try and make this work. For everyone’s sake.”At her words, the anxiety the bassist held just seemed to evaporate, leaving his face with a content sort of smile. Placing his other hand atop hers now, Gideon replied warmly, “I’m glad to hear that.”The warmth of his hands added with the tenderness of the moment caused Cordelia to blush. She very much wanted to pull her hand away, yet felt it not only rude, but that perhaps Gideon wouldn’t allow her even if she tried. Awkward, the dark Raevan grasped at conversation that would lead them away from this oddly developing scenario. With a laugh, “Huh, you know, I think this is the most you’ve spoken to me in one sitting ever.”Embarrassed, the eldest Medusa brother removed his hands to hide them under the table and mumbled, “I talk to you…”Seizing her opportunity, Cordelia gave a smug grin, “Of course you talk to me, but usually it’s more along the lines of ‘yeah’ or ‘okay’. This is the closest to an actual conversation that we’ve gotten to like ever!”“That’s because…” Gideon began before trailing off. Yet before Delia could ask him to elaborate, his phone rang. ”Sorry, it’s my dad. I should probably go…”“Oh, yeah, of course! No no! I’m sorry for bothering you when you’re so busy. Thank you though!”Getting up to leave, Gideon managed another small smile, “We’ll talk more. See ya later Delia.”Cordelia covered her mouth to stifle a laugh at the gorgon’s choice of words then. Had he meant to do that on purpose? Was that his attempt at a joke!? Somewhat awkwardly, “Mhmm, yeah, later!”After the other had left, the snake rolled up her sleeves and began clearing the table, resigning herself to getting back to work. It was a whole minute before she had to stop and glare at the two idiots burning holes into her with their staring. “I swear, if either of you start…”Ebony shared an offended look with Glitch, the AI having joined the other to spy and speculate quite a time ago. “We didn’t say anything!” Though her memories weren’t as they had been, the Brit had lived with the Basilisk long enough now to know when to keep her mouth shut about touchy subjects. Glitch on the other hand… “So which brother are you gonna pick, Cordie?”“Glitch!”“What?”“You can’t ask that!” Ebony exclaimed, worried about making Delia explode. “Why not?” the AI pouted, thoroughly annoyed at being told ‘no’ and not getting an answer. While the two prattled on at one another, Cordelia merely massaged her head and sighed. Would this day never end? ~ ~ ~ “Finally!” the Raevan exhaled as she floated up the steps to the Shade homestead. Today had been a day to end all days given the chaos of the holiday, though despite her exhaustion, she was content with the fact that their event had been a big success. “Maybe too successful…next year could be a pain…” Cordelia mumbled as she rubbed the back of her neck and unlocked the front door. A rustling sound caught her ears and curiously the smoky Frei looked down towards its source. Tired silver eyes widened exponentially as she floated down to take a better view. Nestled delicately in cellophane and tissue paper was a lovely bouquet of green and black roses. Picking up the most unusual arrangement, Cordelia wondered whom they were for. ‘Granddad wouldn’t just leave them out here like that…’ Delia thought silently to herself as she looked the item over. She was surprised to find a card with her name on it. Curiously, the Raevan flipped the small card over, perhaps it would reveal her mysterious gifter. Alas it did not, however, three other words were in its place. Kind — Honest — Beautiful Such straightforwardness was enough to make the snake blush. She wasn’t use to getting such compliments and in such a sweet manner at that, but it was most welcomed after the day she had experienced. Smile gentle and thoughtful, Delia brought the bouquet inside. “Too bad it wasn’t signed…” If it had been, the Frei would have liked to thank them as soon as possible. Yet, she had no way of knowing that the responsible party already knew of her gratefulness then as a shadowy figure disappeared from their hiding place nearby. ~~~~~~
Solo Journal Entry (Growth Quest - Sigel - Track Three)
~~~~~~ Pitiful groaning was coming from the rooftop of the Silver Fox as Cordelia draped herself haphazardly on a railing overlooking the beautiful Gambino skyline. As dazzling as it always was, the snake unfortunately couldn’t enjoy it then as her mind was plagued with frustration. Adrian’s birthday was in a few days and she still hadn’t been able to come up with any sort of gift or plans. “What exactly do you get the guy that has everything?” the girl mumbled around the cigarette in her mouth. Breathing out a smoky sigh, the Raevan turned around and slid to the ground, using the railing as back support. She really wasn’t exaggerating when she said her grandfather had everything. Or rather, he held the ability to obtain whatever he desired whenever he desired. These days though, it seemed the British gent was fairly content with their work at the café and held very little interest in anything material as it were. Thus the Basilisk’s current irritated mood. Listless grey eyes watched as the smoke from her cigarette tip snaked its way up slowly before dissipating. Honestly, Adrian probably wouldn’t mind all that much if they didn’t do anything special for his birthday this year. In fact, now that she thought about it, the elder man hadn’t said squat about it once. Most likely to avoid any sort of unnecessary conflict with her. The thought both saddened and pissed Cordelia off, yet she knew it was her own damn fault. That’s exactly why she needed to do something special for him! More as an apology than anything else, and to show she did still love him very much despite her pain in the a** attitude. Just then her phone pinged, indicating a new message had been received. Impassively, Cordelia swiped her phone to view it. Earlier she’d messaged a couple friends looking for their insight on the matter. LuLu tried her best, but had unfortunately hit the same wall she had of their being no point if he just got whatever he wanted whenever. This particular message though was from Reinhart, of which consisted of him somehow making it about himself and how Cordelia could ‘gift’ herself unto him. Rolling her eyes, the snake quickly typed back the word ‘useless’ and was about to toss the electronic aside until it pinged again. The smoky girl sighed heavily as she really didn’t want to get roped into one of her banter bouts with Charming right then. Her expression quickly changed though when she realized it was a response to the group chat she had with the Medusa Brothers. Seth: ‘He likes music right? Just play him something on your violin.’ Cameron: ‘Ooo…I wanna see Dells rock it out on her electric one!’ Seth: ‘Stupid, it’s for her gramps, not you.’ Cameron: ‘I know that! Just putting in a request for video prosperity. wink ’ Seth: ‘ stare ’ Gideon: ‘Why not actually compose a song just for him?’ Evan: ‘Oh oh! Do that! I’ll help ya if ya want!’ Compose a song in dedication to her grandfather? The idea had never even crossed her mind before as she had only ever composed songs for herself and rarely even shared those with anyone. Could she do it though? She had to admit, it was a pretty great idea. Something personal and from the heart that he surely couldn’t get anywhere else and was bound to love. The more Cordelia thought about it, the more the Raevan liked the idea. Since she hadn’t answered, the chat had suddenly filled with comments and questions of whether she was okay or if she hated the idea. The girl laughed and quickly replied back. Cordelia: ‘No, sorry. I was lost in thought cuz I really like this idea! I don’t have a lot of time and I hate to be a bother, but do ya’ll think you could help me create something?’ Evan: ‘Woot woot! Collab with Cordie! heart ’ Seth: ‘Do you even need to ask? emotion_brofist ’ Gideon: ‘Of course, when’s a good time and place to meet up?’ Cameron: ‘Dude, this is gonna be so ******** epic!’ ~ ~ ~ The last couple days found Cordelia completely immersed in musical reference and composing whenever she had free time. And as this wasn’t exactly an unusual sight to see from her every now and then, Delia did still make it a point of keeping the composing part out of Adrian’s view as much as possible. It wouldn’t do if the surprise got ruined before the big day after all! Thus while Adrian was hard at work at the café, the Basilisk was hard at work at home on her day off. Her current workplace of choice was the dining room table where she had tons of music sheets scattered about along with her laptop. Normally the Raevan would have kept to her room since Ebony was home as well, but the table here was so much bigger than her desk, allowing her plenty of room to spread out and be comfy. Plus, Ebony hadn’t bothered her once since she’d set up camp. Speaking of Ebony, the dark-haired Brit had made it a point not to disturb the Frei while she was so deep in concentration on her current project, opting instead to keep to her own room this time. But it wasn’t like she could stay cooped up there ALL day. Besides, she was terribly curious about what Cordelia was working on that had her so passionately engrossed and productive these last couple days. Finally having had enough, Ebony closed the book she’d been reading before giving the biggest yawn and stretch. Pouncing from her bed, the woman bounded happily out the room and down the stairs. It was time to check in on Cordelia, but not wanting to seem too nosy, Ebony would just make like she was heading for the kitchen. Sneaking a side-glance into the dining room as she passed by, the sight there caused her to pause her stride. “Guess I had nothing to worry about.” the female said softly with a smile. At some point, the dark femme had nodded off and was positioned precariously in her chair; arms crossed, chin resting against her chest and headphones still on. Ebony couldn’t help gushing a bit at how serene and at peace the Basilisk looked then, her near permanent scowl no where to be seen. Honestly, the girl was so breathtaking; the Brit wished she looked like this more often in front of her. Suddenly a light bulb of an idea hit Ebony then as she took her phone out and scooted closer. Very carefully and as quietly as possible, the woman took a picture of the sleeping Raevan. It spooked her some when the shutter sounded; having forgotten to silence her phone beforehand, and nearly dropped it. Ebony froze and held her breath as she watched Cordelia stir from the noise. The Frei’s face scrunched as if having a bad dream while her head rolled to the complete opposite position it held moments prior. Dark lips let pass an incoherent murmur before her furrowed brow finally relaxed and Delia was still once more. The Brit let out a quiet sigh of relief as she stood back up. That was a close one, but it was definitely worth it for the rare picture she now possessed. Ebony knew now was probably the best time to get out of there while she still hadn’t been caught, but…you know what they said about curiosity and cats. Though the house was void of any other occupants at the present, Ebony still looked about to make sure the coast was clear. Ever so slow and careful, the dark-haired femme inched closer once more. With her ear hovering next to Delia’s headphone covered one, Ebony strained to hear even a morsel of what the Raevan was listening to then, but was soon disappointed at the high quality of said device as no sound could be heard by anyone other than the current user. Ebony was just about to give up when she spied that the girl’s computer screen was still viewable, most likely due to the fact that the headphones were plugged in and still playing something. Grey eyes widened and sparkled with delight at the sight before them. Cordelia currently had up one of those audio programs that was playing something on loop, but that wasn’t what made her so happy. No, it was the title of the project: ‘Adrian’s Song’. Despite all her moodiness and arguing, it was pretty obvious how much Cordelia loved her grandfather. And though Ebony couldn’t remember how things use to be, the sweet gesture still stirred something deep in her heart enough to summon tears to her eyes. As per usual, the endearing moment was cut short by the loud crudeness of the snake’s phone as it blasted some rock melody and vibrated angrily across the mahogany table. Without warning, the smoky Frei slammed her hand upon the device and ripped her headphones off before groggily placing it to her ear. “What!? O-oh, hey…yeah…okay…see ya.”Scratching the back of her obsidian head rough as she yawned great, Delia’s gaze surveyed the dining room lazily. For some reason, something didn’t seem quite right, but she just couldn’t place it. Already over it, the Basilisk shrugged, sighed and stretched before floating into the living room. A sidelong glance into the kitchen made her stop immediately. “What are you doing?” The Raevan’s question clearly filled with confused disgust. Ebony, having been in a rush to flee the dining room before Cordelia could catch her snooping, had quickly grabbed the first things she’d seen in the kitchen to make herself busy and to give herself a reason for being there in the first place. Trying to play it cool and smooth, “O-oh hey Delia! Nothing, just getting some cereal!”The snake raised a brow suspiciously; “You know you’re pouring coffee over them frosted flakes, right?”Idiot of a smile plastered upon her hopeless face, Ebony nodded enthusiastically. “Of course! Idea just popped in my head and I thought, hey why not!?”“Riiight…” the girl replied, still with an air of suspicion as the human laughed nervously. Feigning ignorance, Cordelia continued. “Anyway, this is perfect. I was going to let you know that the band was coming over later.”Ah, so it must have been one of those brothers who called just then. “Oh? All of them?”“Yeah. They’ll be bringing their instruments over too, so we’ll be borrowing the garage for our jam session.”Instruments huh? Ebony smiled knowingly, “Sure thing. I’ll plan something special for dinner, so make sure to ask them if there’s anything they like especially or can’t eat.”“Y-you don’t have to do that!” Delia blurted out. The Raevan was embarrassed because for once, Ebony sounded like any ole mother. Having friends over unexpectedly, her guardian actually being okay with it and cooking something that would be edible…this was definitely uncharted territory. “I mean…I’m sure they won’t be here that long.”“Nonsense! They came all the way over here to visit! The least I could do is make them feel welcomed. And what’s more welcoming than a meal!”Realizing that the Medusas would probably be starving after their little rehearsal and that there was absolutely no talking Ebony out of making dinner for them, the Raevan conceded. With only a teeny pout, “Fine. I’ll tell them.”With a squeal of delight, Ebony gave Cordelia a big hug of which was met with immediate opposition as the snake hissed and squirmed her way out of it. Not that it even mattered because the Brit was already off in her own world. “Oh my gosh! This’ll be so nice and fun! Oh! I should bring in some of the vegetables from the green house!”All Cordelia could do was shrug and sigh as the human continued mumbling to herself. Though a tiny smile did grace her dark lips very briefly at the sight. ~ ~ ~ The night of Adrian’s birthday had come at last. Delia was a nervous wreck, pacing the Silver Fox’s interior consistently whenever she wasn’t preoccupied with work that actually required her complete undivided attention. “Delia, seriously, you need to stop. Adrian and the staff are starting to worry about you and customers keep staring.” Ebony commented quietly as she managed to pull the girl to the side finally without bringing any more attention to them as the Raevan already had garnered. “Ugh! I know! I’m sorry. It’s just…why did I agree to do this so publicly? Privately would have been much, much better! It’s the Shade way after all!” Now in full mode meltdown, Cordelia pulled at her long, black hair. “Nope, nope…should have just composed the damn thing and had the boys take care of everything else. There was absolutely no reason to put a violin part in. Actually, yeah, we’ll just have them play without that part. Since no one’s ever heard this song before, they’ll never notice! Right? RIGHT!?”Grasping both sides of the smoky girl’s shoulders, the black-haired Brit firmly shook the other. “CORDELIA! GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF!”Well that certainly did it. All eyes within earshot had turned their way fully now, any form of modesty in their curiosity shattered as they stared. Thoroughly embarrassed by her own outburst, Ebony abruptly let go of Cordelia and began fumbling for an apology. Speaking of, the snake had been dumbfounded at first by the human’s explosive response. Less so by the actual words themselves and more so by the look held upon the woman’s face in that fleeting moment. Delia couldn’t remember the last time she’d actually seen those eyebrows furrow in complete, unadulterated, almost righteous irritation. And when the moment had passed and Ebony was back to being her new clumsy, ditzy like self? The dark Frei couldn’t help a peel of laughter letting loose. She wasn’t exactly sure why, but the sudden contrast was profoundly funny then. As to be expected, Ebony was not prepared for such a response. A curt snapback, cold silence, outright hostility and run of the mill moodiness sure, but sidesplitting laughter? Somewhat dazed and confused, the worried guardian thinking she’d broken her ward squeaked out a meek, “D-D-Delia?”While Cordelia was still in hysterics, the Medusa Brothers had finally arrived and strolled up to the girls with perplexed looks on their faces. Seth, the band’s singer and guitarist, was the first to ask, “What’s so funny?”Looking like she’d tear up any minute now, Ebony looked to the boys for help. But before she could say anything, the Basilisk’s laughter died down and the Raevan quickly replied, “Nothing. Inside joke.” Cordelia gave the Brit a light pat on the cheek. “I’m okay now. Really. Thanks.” Flashing the biggest and most genuine smiles in gods knows how many years; the Frei joined the band and lead them away. “So you guys ready? I’ll show you where to set up.”Stunned beyond all words, Ebony gawked after the group silently as they walked away. Slowly the female raised a hand to gently touch her cheek, still a bit chilled from the snake’s icy touch. Something…something…what was this familiar sensation? This feeling? It was like…suddenly the Brit clutched her head in pain as images flashed inside her mind. Too many, too quick to make any sense of them. Everything was spinning so fast so suddenly that Ebony’s breath began to quicken into a panicked pant. She thought she might actually vomit then. “Ebony?” Just when she thought her head would split open from the intensity, a firm hand clamped down onto her shoulder and brought her back to reality. “Hey, are you okay?”With a slight gasp and jump, the woman focused on the figure next to her. Thank the stars it was Adrian. “Y-yeah. Sorry, I’m fine.”“Are you sure? You’re crying.” the elder man asked, a look of great concern etched across his sapphire blue eyes. Touching her cheek again, Ebony was shocked to find it was true. But why? Embarrassed, she quickly wiped the tears away and shook her head. “Y-yeah, no, it’s just…I got a terrible migraine suddenly, that’s all. Don’t worry. I’ll go take something for it right now.”Adrian didn’t seem completely convinced, but he let it go for now. “Well, if you’re sure. Let me know if there’s something else you need. Oh! By the way, you know anything about that?” asked the older Brit as he cocked a thumb towards Cordelia and her friends. “I wasn’t aware we’d be having a live performance tonight.”Grey eyes falling unto the group setting up and tuning their instruments, Ebony couldn’t help but grin. “Oh that? That’s a secret. But you’ll find out soon enough. Happy birthday!” And with that, the dark haired femme jetted off to find the first aid kit, leaving a rather befuddled, yet amused Adrian behind. “Birthday huh…” Chuckling to himself, the man returned to work, all the while lightly humming the ‘Happy Birthday’ song. Adrian hadn’t actually been expecting much of anything this year; in fact he’d made it a personal point in not bringing it up at all. Yet knowing his precious granddaughter had gone out of her way all on her own just for him… “I’m the luckiest guy in the world today.”~~~~~~
