I know that he can control sand but he has to have it attached somehow. I'm going to cosplay him but I can't figure out how to keep it up like him. sweatdrop

it has a cloth around it that atches to that brown strap thing he has sweatdrop or something like that

It's attached to that Strap around him, aswell as the Gaud being made of sand its self.

As the two people before me said already, the gourd is held up with the sash he has.
I would recommend taking a good look at his clothings from the start of his appearnces to the end.
And keep an eye out for shots where he is seen from the back.

I agree with the first three posts or so. Try looking at the first part of the Chunin exams, when they're in the forest. There are some pretty good shots of him in those scenes!

3nodding i cosplayed as gaara on more then one ocation. you want 2 black elastic bands to cress cross over ur shoulders and around the gord. cover the elastic that goes over the gord with the cloth that people think holds it to the brown shash... which it doesn't.
