Solo 1

A brisk morning wind, salty with brine, blew inland, wreathing the coastline in its exuberant summer dance and running fingers of air through his hair, it bade him, 'to the water come.' And like a young sailor beau, he could do naught else but follow, like he was caught in the sweet song of a beautiful siren. Out of the house before anyone else was even awake he checked the shoreline, for here there was always treasure found.

Already he had found a few coins and a shell. He placed the smaller coins in a coin pouch. He abhorred clothing without pockets. never enough storage space which wasn't very good at all. One day he wanted to learn how to make those pouches. They came in so handy! The wind whipped the sea into a brisk tempo of wavelets, gray sky and blue gray water. It was glorious and beautiful and he could not imagine why anyone lived too far from the sea.

A tempestuous day to be sure, but he thought that it likely wouldn't amount to much more than that by his young reckoning. He did at least have a fairly accurate weather sense. Being raised here had attuned him to the signs and signals that the environment used to communicate with its denizens.

He continued along the beach, letting his heart guide him, hither and yon. More things he found to go into his pockets until he felt quite weighted down.

He made a cache halfway back to the house and buried his finds like a clever fox. S long as a scavenger didn't get curious or too interested he would be fine. all it took was a minor disturbance of the land and they got all up in your business because that was how scavengers worked. They would think he had buried turtle eggs or another such delicacy. Brats.

He went for a quick swim in the shallows. The water was rejuvenating and he chased a few fish around before dragging himself out of the water. It had always been so, eh would always have a connection with the sea. It was home, just as much as land was for him. The ocean was beautiful and dramatic, just like he was. Being in the water always made an improvement on his mood. Which was more than he could say for most everything else. Beach combing happened to be his favorite activity in the morning. Originally it had driven his parents crazy when they woke up many mornings in a row to him being gone off somewhere. But he always came back and stayed on the beaches associated with their house. He did occasionally push the boundary but there usually had to be something visible to investigate.

Solo 2

It was a busy day for him and Amiir, his regal janarim, who was developing intot a finer and finer beast by the day. His heart swelled with pride and he spent a lot of time with his critters, training them and forming strong bonds that he hoped would last a lifetime. He found the work with critters very rewarding. Getting an entirely different species to understand what you wanted was in his eyes magical in itself. One that did not need a spell. He felt like he could truly relax when he worked with his animals. An uncommon gift.

He did wonder how Seathra was getting along with her monstrous snaptrotter. Its feet had been big as dinner plates, what a rare sized specimen. A fine catch, not as fine as his friends were but each to their own. He was still a cool critter in Undine's professional opinion.

He had redone a lot of ground work with Amiir, he had wanted it less for retraining and more about going through the same steps to bond, his janarim responded well to all of it and slowly Undine got braver and braver.

Now finally he felt that it was time to swing a leg over. He stood in the stirrup a few times before committing his full weight pulling to one side. HIs father had told him that he had a natural knack with animals and had shown him the basics of training. Then as any good teacher he left his son to develop his own style and flair.

His full weight settled over the janarim's back and he hooked his foot in the other stirrup and talked calmly and comfortingly to his beast. For a good minute, there were no fireworks. He got off again and praised his beast for good behaviour and gave him a treat. He then repeated the same process over and over. Then he turned his good boy out to pasture to be with the other two janairm residents that Dad had brought home as new projects for himself.

Undine then worked on recall patterns with his sailscale. This critter had come with a lot less training but the interaction was just as rewarding. He found that often things introduced one day would be better understood the next after the animal had had time to think it over for a bit. It had made him very patient with training overall. Critters were much smarter than most people gave them credit for.

Solo 3

Ever since he had first watched his mother move through her sword forms while he was very young he had admired her grace and strength as well as the raw power of her absolute coolness. His Mom was awesome. Dad was too and Undine was rather leaning toward beast charmer as a likely career path. But eventually he got brave enough to learn some of the more basic weapon moves from his Mom.

Often he went out and practiced with her, sometimes by himself and sometimes more than twice a day if he was very upset about something. He found that the practice greatly increased his focus to get some exercise in. Besides it was quality time with Mom. Sometimes Dad would hop in the ring with her and it was fast like lightning when they faced off. He was always in wonder at the speed and grace and power that flowed through their forms. Obviously Dad had gotten significant practice in with mom and it wasn't hard to see why she was his favorite taming assistant, quick strikes like a Keldari.

It was a flurry of motion accompanied by the sounds of battle, rustling clothing, squealing blades, puffs, pants and grunts as they struck hard. Dad was stronger but mom was more agile, Undine hoped to one day be both and learn from each parent their style. He was determined that no one would mess with him by the time he was an actual charmer.

He had seen how his older brother Ustasis liked to hide rather than face his bullies, and he had decided that bullies would fear him. He wanted non of that silly nonsense on his plate and how did you beat a big fish? You became a bigger fish and hoped that your size alone would deter and then to fight if it didn't. Dad maintained in a quiet aside to him one night after some alcohol at the table that all Ustasis had to do was beat them up once. But it was also a good thing to have truly gentle people around otherwise who would the rowdies protect? Undine took his turn watching out for his brother, all he had to do was alert Ultear...no one messed with Ultear. Undine grinned at the scary demon thought.

Solo 4

It was no longer his first ride. He was supposed to stay close to home technically but he viewed it as more of a best practice than a hard rule. Nothing ventured, nothing gained after all. He was impatient with being young and not having much freedom one way or another. Thus when his parents definitely were not paying attention, he broke the rule designed to keep him safe. He nudged his janarim's sides bringing the long legged beast into a canter.

Amiir loved his young master and only occasionally showed his own young age by being a bit of a brat. For the most part though he was pretty angelic and Undine had learned with him. They had a beautiful bond. His sailscale Scully, winged to join them, fllying gracefully overhead.

His heart filled with joy. Perhaps he would sneak all the way to his cousin's ranch and visit Seathra. It would have been a long treck for his short stubby legs but with Amiir the possibilities opened up quite nicely. He felt like nothing could stop him now and he grinned ferally. This out here on the open trail, this was truly who he was and he would dare anyone to try and keep him from it for overlong.

He did realize his parents meant well but they loved him for his rebellious streak too. And this wonder of wonders, was well worth the spanking he might receive soon if they figured out that he had left the boundaries they had assigned for him.

At the very least all of his chores were done, they could not complain about that. No one had ever told him the story of Elaxi either so he was a bit naive. He didn't think that there was any significant threat out here, especially not riding a janarim.

He leaned down and patted his mounts' neck. "Don't worry we will adventure to Oba one day old boy. I want to see where you came from old boy. I want to see where you came from too! He was feeling joy and rather full of himself at the same time. A heady combination to be sure. Instead of heading back like perhaps a smarter boy would do, he continued on.

Miles disapeared underneath his mounts feet. Everything seemed different when one was rising. He stopped once in a while to give the young male a break and to check his feet. His Dad had said that you couldn't do that too much, so he made a point of it. So far everything was going rather well.
Until he looked up and saw a massive dark thunderhead heading his way. He didn't mind rain, but the moody appearance of the formation made him nervous. It looked like it would be a pretty bad storm. Cowed he turned Amiir around.

He would have to sneak back onto the property and hope that his two hour absense would not be noticed...more like four by the time he got home. Though it wasn't uncommon for him to hide in whichever spot suited his fancy to read. They would likely notice the missing janarim though. Dad was alert like that, Mom was sharp and she usually did find him when she needed to. The hiding was definitely an Umen inherited bloodline trait. Ultear, Tahnee, Ustasis and he did it. He wasn't sure Izel bothered he was a very chill person. He was an odd duck at least so far as their already somewhat odd family went.

It had started to pour by the time he snuck back across the boundary line. He led Amiir back to the barn and untacked him. He was oddly quiet and he had a sneaky suspicion that his family might already by out looking for him. He was going to be in so much trouble when they did find him. He had to admit to a dab of fear and guilt but he forgot both when he hugged his janarim's neck. He had made sure to walk Amiir to cool him down and bathed his legs with water. He put some antinflammatory supplements in his food, put his sailscale to bed in the warm barn roost so he could warm up and dry off as well. Scully was happily preening when the closed the latch on the door. He then snuck up into the barn loft himself to sleep.

He was aware that not everyone had such a struggle in choosing what they wanted to do. He wasn't used to such indecision he was a straight forward person with no time to dawdle but for some reason this decision was eluding him. The moment he thought he had it his mood or something else shifted and he was left back at square one all over again and more frustrated to boot. What was the answer? Both of his parents had tried to help, but neither of them had struggled trying to decide what they wanted to be. Perhaps the answer was obvious and staring him in the face but for some reason he didn't think so. Maybe h just hadn't looked hard enough, maybe it was something completely different from what was pulling at him. He sighed and deflated, shoulders rounded, which he never would have done had someone been looking they deserved to see the sharp lines of his lovely collarbones and a straight back full of elegance and support. He was a graceful beautiful creature and that much he never ever forgot. If anything he always had his pride.

Originally he had wanted to be a dancer and he loved dance and loved to dance with critters too as they had some very well trained ones thanks to his Dad. But then he didn't want to only dance all day, day in day out..so back to the drawing board he had gone. Then the next thing to sort of pull at him was magic, a type of mage but eventually that idea soured out somewhat too. Frustrated he stopped by Saeruins forge to see if maybe a blacksmith would suite him. Though he didn't like to sweat or work too hard and well, that was all she did. No wonder she shared that sour look that her husband always bore and no wonder she had taken a few breaks from working at the forge when her kids were a bit older and needed more time with their mom, she had obviously needed it too.

He liked the idea of beast taming but so many of them were beast tamers that it seemed a bit cliche and he wanted desperately to stand out in the crowd. Though having the fantastic coloration that his father had been blessed with by the Aishan trees helped somewhat he still matched his father almost par for par besides his lovely mothers beautiful crystals which he was so grateful to inherit. After all of this fuss he was no closer to finding what he wanted to be, who he wanted to apprentice too, than a fish was to walking on land. Ugh.

He had tried to wait, tried different things and he was still just as confused, if not more so than when he started. Seathra his best friend and cousin was no help at all as she had known what she had wanted to do from the darn beginning almost. He sighed. Writing in the notebook she had gifted him for his birthday had not helped either. He had ended up scribbling all over the page in sheer frustration. What was it? Where was it? What was he destined to do? Would thinking about it any harder even help or should he just give up and be a beach bum like Izel. He flopped dramatically back on his bed and stared stubbornly up at the ceiling.

Eventually he dragged his perfect arse out of bed and drowned his sorrows in some of the extra fancy tea that his mother had gotten from her sister Nin. It was arguably the best tea in the world and was hand crafted in Oba and Matori making it a unique but flavorful brand no matter where you tried it. Funny that the tea seemed to have it all figured out and he was left here to drift.

He didn't think he was cut out to be a writer..he enjoyed music but didn't want to play it. What on earth was he meant to do? His parents said it would come to him and not to stress too hard about it but it was starting to consume most of his days the not knowing. Maybe there was an outlet he hadn't considered. Maybe what he really craved was adventure..

He left the house to go to the public notice board for treasure hunters. Those folks that used all their skills to bring home priceless artifacts and stones. He did like history and he was a big old material girl. He made his way toward the sign...his heart beat faster than normal and he was so ready to see if he had finally found what he had been looking for this whole time. He was slinky and stealthy but the thought of being a bandit wasn't all that appealing. Dirty and gods forbid he ever get a scar on his face.

He stood then in front of the board where people asked for help with things, it was also a hot spot to find treasure hunter assignments and rumors and he was not the only one there. As it happened there were two treasure hunter parties talking about their former assignments and from the sounds of things he thought that finally here might be the answer. He too looked at the board and got a feel for what the typical assignments were. There were also higher profile private ones that paid more..plus there was self directed quests with long lost treasures usually found in dusty old tombs and he had never heard of a book giving you a scar before. Yes. This. Was. It.

He would be a treasure hunter and that would be that. Unafraid now, he asked the parties where to find someone to teach him how from the ground up. They patted him on the back and told him about the old man in the bush who had gathered the loot of a life time but lived for the story of it more than the cash though he had plenty of that too. Now most of his treasure was donated to help feed people and such. Undine felt he would give him a try.

Upon meeting the old man however, Undine found he liked the stories but there was something off about the vibe. He suspected that the elder was starting to go senile and he had not the patience to deal with that so by word of mouth he got the information for a younger treasure hunter that would be able to teach.

He had to go on a bloody long walk to get there but eventually he and his sore feet made it. Next time if there was a next time he would bring his janarim and be done with punishing his own feet. He wasn't used to standing for that long and it was a long, long walk down twisty trails full of roots and the occassional splash of wildflowers. It was a pretty walk and the closer he got the more right it seemed to feel. It had been years that he had hoped to feel this infernal feeling that had eluded him all of this time. So much stress he had gone through to arrive at a simple, beautiful answer.

He knocked on the hut door, it was a big hut but a hut non the less, not uncommon in Matori but he was himself used to a larger dwelling due to the size of his family.

He was not expecting the prospective teacher to be a woman, but he did suppose that there were quite a few of them out there. Uncle Tethys for one was hoping to date a treasure hunter lady called Liylasa and he had become most boring since then that was for sure. He was hardly ever home and always had his cool sailscales with him. Undine had learned a lot about sailscale care and maintenance from him and his sailscale had definitely profited but also...don't be boring uncle.

"Uh hello, my name is Undine and I was wondering if you were looking for prentices at all. You see after years of mulling it over I think that a treasure hunter is what I am meant to be. I have an adventurous and indomitable spirit and I want to learn so much more until I am able to adventure on my own or with my best friend Seathra who wants to be a Beast Charmer. I like them too, you could say it runs in our blood but I also think that the dynamic nature of treasure hunting appeals to me more." He paused to take and long breath but before he could start on another long spiel, she raised her hand and waved it.

"You know I could use a spry prentice such as yourself..we will find the right spot for you in the treasure hunting world never you fear. You are the first to come to me, many go to the old man, I admit I'm a bit new but I can promise you, you won't be bored training with me."
