❂ Valek ❂
Name: Valek Stage: Stage 3 - Bandit Path Race: Oban/Yaeli Sexuality: Unknown 3 Base Traits: Decisive - Ambitious - Egocentric Personality: When he was a youngling, Valek showed no signs of hesitation when it came to reaching for what he wanted. Even as a Prentice he is still fairly straightforward about his desires and will push himself to achieve anything that his heart is set upon. It may mean pushing others aside to get his way, but his needs always come first. The only time that Valek may consider another person's well-being before his own is when it comes to protecting his family. Needless to say that may result in quite a few enemies while he is growing up. Back stabbing is not quite so appreciated, especially in the streets of Oba, after all.
Still, Valek is resilient and doesn't understand what 'no' really entails. He's also not above using his looks to get his way. The young man will try a vary of techniques, ranging from pouting to the smolder, to try and win the hearts of those near him. For some it may be a bit pushy while others find themselves warming up to his humor. He does his best to hide his true ambitions under a smirk and a flirty comment but sometimes his mask will slip to show the more serious personality hiding just beneath the surface.
His more recent occupation has only increased his risky behavior, always gambling at the expense of others while using his quick wits to get out of tricky situations. He enjoys watching others, using their reactions to his own amusement while navigating the darker areas of Oba to pursue anything of interest. While other vigilantes may dive into fighting the bad guys and saving the day, Valek prefers to watch a scene play out to try to capture anyone involved even if he has to allow some to get away with some of the corruption so that he can better track down the source.
Description: An obvious mix of his Oban and Yaeli heritage, Valek has the skintone of the Oban race and some of their amber crystals while sporting Yaeli eyes, ears and purple hair.
Some quirks/habits: Hiding precious things, tapping his fingers against his chin while he's thinking and tugging at his ears when frustrated. Theme Songs:
❂History ❂ ❣ Born to Seziah and Tytus, Valek was raised alongside his sister under their mother's care. Their father Tytus would be around as much as possible but would often leave due to his work with the military. As a result, Valek would often look forward to his father's visits for the gifts that he brought but the boy would feel more protective of his sister and mother. It is a fairly simple childhood so far minus the weird stares of the neighbors for being a Yaeli hybrid in Oba. He heard some stories of his mother's homeland and may one day venture over there, but was content living in the desert city with his family. The split of his parents, the missing correspondence from his sister and mother has made him harbor a disdain for anything Yaeli and honestly he has adapted to Oba as his true home.
As a young teen while his father was busy with his military work and traveling, Valek enrolled in a training school in the hopes that he could grow stronger and maybe take after his father. Still, things did not settle well with the rebellious hybrid who found himself more fascinated by the study of others instead of trying to fight honorably and pick up the family's military mantle. His talent for sticking to the shadows attracted attention and now he works in Oba under a secretive group who operates from the shadows to keep the balance of power between all of the Oban families, their actual goals sometimes a bit more complex and clouded as they take on work for various situations and patrons. Mostly, he lives within Oba and only roams outside of the country whenever something urgent occurs that sends him on a mission that way. He keeps up correspondence with his father, but other than that keeps mostly to himself save for others that he works on various missions with including a particular Moon who he enjoys partnering up with despite her tendency to lash out at him.

❂ Relationships ❂
❣ Tytus - his father who he respects even though they took different paths in life, his work in the shadows and his father's travels making it hard to catch up with one another. Still, Tytus feels like his only remaining family that he is close with and he would do anything to help his father out if needed.
❣ Seziah and Vyvala - his mother and sister.

❂ Pickpocket [Monk Way of the Shadow] ❂
“You’re pretty good at sticking to the shadows kid.”
Those words were the ones that would stick with Valek for years as he studied at the academy his father had placed him into. Valek was not much of one for learning about military strategies nor did he ever really plan to fit into the Oban regime. As much as he knew what it meant to his father the boy didn’t find himself really enjoying the idea of having people ordering him around his whole life. It was painful enough to sit through what classes he needed so that he could learn more about fighting and all of that other reading and mathematical stuff. Still, he much preferred staying here where he didn’t have to worry about a hovering parent and so he endured the lessons and kept up the pretense of being a decent student. There was simply too much he wanted to avoid in Sulburi, especially with his father being constantly gone for his own military duties. So he kept at his work and while others found enjoyment besting one another on the battlefield, Valek preferred to observe their actions so that he could learn how to outmaneuver them. Instead of getting wrapped up in those basic studies he found enjoyment secretly picking through the belongings of other students studying here at the large series of buildings nestled along the Matori and Oban border town. He could learn even more about them and any weaknesses that way along with increasing his own savings for the day he left to go out in the world on his own. The older maze of dormitories made it super easy to slip through forgotten hallways and abandoned rooms so that he could fully enjoy his pranks and sometimes more profitable encounters. But it was a bit too easy, especially after living at the training academy for nearly two years where he had memorized all of the paths of the academy. Eventually he had gotten tired of outfoxing other students and so he started to misbehave in the neighboring town where he had gotten caught by the older Oban man who had seemingly emerged from the shadows next to him. Finding himself truly caught for the first time had taken Valek by surprise but thankfully for him the older man was more interested in studying him rather than chastising him or turning him over to any authorities to return the coin purses he had acquired during today’s shopping.
The young teen found himself baffled but intrigued by the man. “It’s better to not be noticed so I like the darker alleys.” He offered with a casual shrug, his silver gaze glancing over the man as he slowly took another step backwards.
“Most thieves would think that way.” The man chuckled as he kept his crimson gaze on the younger teen. “Foreign hybrids are riskier considering how unique their traits are for the authorities to track.”
Annoyed, Valek stopped moving and shot a glare towards the Oban. So what if he was a “foreign” hybrid? He was somewhat Oban, right? But even he knew better than that. While there were a lot of Oban and Matori families that had blended together over the years there weren’t many Yaeli who dared to intermingle with others in this strange country. Valek had never really seen many Yaeli out even in Sulburi and he was honestly surprised his mother had even left Yael. They were simply too skittish of a people, so superstitious that it hurt him to even listen to some of the stories about the gods and what not. Perhaps he was a bit jaded thanks to his unique appearance that had brought a lot of bullying and the rift that seemed to separate him from his Yaeli heritage. The most frustrating part was how impossible it would be for him to even try to appear fully Oban because even if he dyed his hair the boy couldn’t hide his strange eyes or his longer ears. He had his father’s warm mocha skin and the golden crystals but nothing else that would help him to blend in with the rest of the crowd better. So then the shadows helped a lot whenever he wasn't wanting to be the center of attention, something he never had the taste for anyways. A few pranks here and there to try and lighten up his classmates' moods, even at first shining in an exam and what not had burned away such passions whenever he had to deal with the outlash from others that came from noble or higher military families to study here. They definitely did not enjoy a stranger like him exceeding their own scores and that was when Valek had simply decided to stay low and blend his scores and abilities to appear more towards the middle somehow. Not too great, not too awful so that he couldn’t be noticed more than he already was. It was perfect since not bringing a lot of attention to himself actually allowed him a lot more freedom than expected.
“Don’t take it the wrong way, kid.” The man grinned as he caught sight of the teen’s furious stare. “I’m more impressed that you got away with so much, considering. You’re from the academy?”
“Perhaps. Though why should I tell you anything?” Valek finally replied as he crossed his arms and raised his shoulders defiantly. If he had to fight then he would fight. Just because he hid his skills at school didn’t mean he was lacking in any department. If anything, late night training, real life experience from pickpocketing in the town and finding his way throughout the older areas of the buildings had only increased his skills more than simply going out and striking some training dummy over and over.
“Alright, fine.” The man held up his hands almost as if in surrender. “The name is Araysh and I am not here to rob anyone, I’m here to track certain people of interest as part of my job.”
“Certain people of interest?” Repeated Valek with a raised eyebrow. “What does that even mean?”
“If I tell you then you would probably be added to that list.” Araysh shrugged. “But I’ve already noticed you around the town the last few days and I’ve been to the academy to speak with others on business so I’ve seen you there too.”
“I….” Not like he would be one to pay attention to who was coming and going through the higher offices, but wait...he was. Valek frowned. “I never noticed you.”
“It’s fairly easy to not be noticed when I want.” Araysh offered with a smirk. “I appeared now because I wanted to be noticed by you because I have a proposition, kid.”
“Oh?”
“Yes.” Araysh gave a slight shrug. “I mean if you don’t want to linger and would rather leave then so be it, Valek.”
“Like you think I’m…” Valek’s gaze narrowed as he realized something that bothered him. “I never introduced myself.”
“Didn’t need to. I already knew.”
“For someone so secretive you’re suddenly very talkative.” Protested Valek with a sigh as he turned around before nearly jumping when the man seemed to disappear and then reappear next to him. “Seriously?!” What a cocky a*****e! Sure, Araysh seemed to have plenty of abilities to allow him to show off but why was he bothering him?!
“I’ll be at the inn for another three days. If you would be interested in knowing why I chose to appear today then find me there.” And like that he was gone again and Valek just found himself holding a scrap of parchment between his fingers. At the time the teen wanted to be stubborn and not show interest in a man who tracked others and seemed to appear and disappear in the shadows at will, but it was hard not to be intrigued. So two days later he finally came to the designated spot and found himself greeted by the Oban who seemed to hold no doubt that the teen would come find him.
“Alright, fine.” Valek let out a sigh as he simply strode past the man and sat down on the small inn bed. “I’m interested and I would like to train under you if it keeps me out of sight and out of mind.”
A chuckle left Araysh. “It’s a bit more complicated than that but sure.”
“Why me though?” Valek found himself asking suddenly.
“I have friends in different places and someone noticed how well you observed others. It’s a skill we constantly employ in our occupation and they’ve been pressuring me to take on an apprentice for years now. So why not?”
A chuckle left Valek’s lips. “I guess I should have known it would be harder to hide my latest pranks.” The pair of boys in his class had simply gone too far with bullying another person and so he had perhaps taken it upon himself to get them expelled. No trace of his involvement, no way to track down any outside interference as their family connections and bad habits were quietly revealed one after another over a series of weeks until finally enough was enough for the academy and they were expelled. “One of the instructors?”
“Mmhmm. Only someone trained like me else you would have been golden.”
“They still didn’t say anything to save those brats?” Valek asked with curiosity.
“Why should they? It’s nice to see some justice being served from the shadows on occasion and so Ebba contacted me instead so I could meet you.”
“Fair. I should have known it would be Ebba.” Valek found himself thinking before he gave a nod. Now that Ebba was involved it seemed even more reasonable to actually do this since that was one of the few instructors the teen actually liked. “Alright, I’ll study under you. I have a few more years left here so why not pick up a few extra lessons from a guy who just approached me?” It was too boring anyway in this quiet town with its easy academy lessons. “So what should I consider this path to be called?”
“Let’s just say bandits for now since those in the shadows prefer to keep it that way. You’re already good at being a pickpocket after all.”
“Fine.” Valek let out a chuckle. “Consider me a pickpocket in training then.” And so he would train for several years under Araysh to become even better at sticking to the shadows. All while balancing the academy and keeping in touch mostly with only his father while never saying a word about the classes that took place inside and outside of the academy grounds after dark.

❂ Growth Quest ❂
“I see you passed without any issues.” Ebba stood in the doorway to Valek’s room, an official document curled up in her hands. “Here.” The Oban woman had been Valek’s daytime and sometimes nighttime instructor over the past seven years since he had moved into the Academy grounds and was the only one who knew the full scope of the young man’s abilities.
Valek took the document but didn’t even bother to open it before shoving it into the top of his satchel bag, his few remaining belongings tucked carefully into just a couple of bags for easier traveling. He had sold a lot already and tucked what coin he could into good hiding places so that no one could easily pocket all of his hardwork from the past few years. His best deposit was in the pair of daggers hanging at his side with their sleek blades crafted from the finest metal with golden and silver designs twisting together along the handles. It had taken almost two whole months for the blacksmith to finalize the weapons that Valek treasured. Not that they were his only ones considering the heavy gloves he had, the metal knuckles, the variety of throwing knives hidden on his body and the walking stick that had solid edges for when he needed that extra space. Over the years the boy had ventured away from the more traditional military weapons of lances and swords to instead practice weapons that made it easier to attack from the shadows.
“Are you just going back to Oba?” Ebba found herself asking with a raised brow as Valek glanced about the room. “I know your father has a home there so are you going to him?”
“That was the original plan. I was content with it and that was the endgame from seven years ago when I first came here to study.” Mused Valek as he glanced towards Ebba. “However, Araysh gave me an offer to continue working with him and training around here until his next mission. What do you think?” He could very easily go back to his father and settle into the comfortable routine of working as a soldier in the Oban army or he could do some more riskier things that would potentially distance him from the only family member he kept in contact with. It was hard considering that Valek had only been close to Tytus over the years, always sending letters and gifts to one another like pen pals or something. His own work within the military had always kept him separated from them but Valek still held deeper affection for his father despite everything because he understood the tricky situation he had been placed in. How else was he to provide for them after all? Now he finally had a chance to go and stay with his father, to work alongside him one day….but was that truly his calling?
“It’s your decision, not mine.” Ebba shrugged as she turned from Valek, but her steps paused before she disappeared from sight. “I am proud of you and think you have many talents, Valek. They will allow you to do whatever you want, but I feel like you would not be completely content taking orders in the daylight. It’s too boring, no? Either way I’m proud of you so just do what makes you happy.”
Damn. Valek let out a chuckle before nodding his head. “I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for everything, Ebba.” He watched the slender Oban woman disappear and a part of his stomach knotted. He had lived here for so long that it almost felt more like home than anything else. Was he ready to leave? Not like he had much choice considering his time as a student was over. But was it truly? If he stayed with Araysh he would be giving up on the chance to get closer to his father again, but it would also allow him to grow stronger in a field that both terrified and excited him. Valek’s fingers tightened on his satchel as he walked away from the Academy, but instead of veering towards the right path away from town he went towards the inn once more. “Sorry, pops.” He would have to send a new letter, his second goodbye as he distanced himself even more from family to find his own path in this world even if it was a path that kept him in the shadows.
[744]
Valek is choosing to take the harder path that keeps him away from family so that he can continue training in the shadows under Araysh. He has graduated from the military academy but is not going the traditional route of soldier which was what he had originally imagined for his future because of his father’s connections. It’s a big decision from him as he starts to carve his own path in this world and decides to venture away from the reliable life promised in Sulburi to instead pursue something perhaps a bit more dangerous and chaotic.
