Living in Matori with his grandparents.

PostPosted: Thu Nov 02, 2017 7:35 pm

User ImageName: Emiyn
Stage: Prentice
Race: Matori
Gender: Male

Base Traits: Imaginative, Open, Mature

Personality: Emi is a very imaginative soul who has a great talent for creating things - whether it be art or stories. He enjoys spinning tales to help cheer up anyone in need and when it comes to giving advice he will gladly use metaphors and any simple folk-tale to help get the point across. He also enjoys spending his time simply resting on the beach, listening to the waves and dreaming about all the possibilities of the world around him. Sometimes he may come off as a bit strange to others because of his fantasies, but his kindness and warm smile still present him as a likable person. Everyone has their quirks right?

His open personality also pushes him to share all the things with everyone and he is known as a loving, social, and friendly spirit. He loves to listen and to converse with others and makes for a great adviser as rather than butting in he is the one to spend however many hours with another listening to their story. Honestly he loves giving advice as he feels that it is his role in life to inspire and motivate; to raise the spirits of those around him. On the negative side being so open also makes him an awful liar and he will get in trouble for sometimes being a bit too blunt with his answers. As he grows that may be cause for why he spins a story rather than giving a direct answer as to ease the person into what he believes is the truth rather than immediately hurting their feelings or disagreeing with them on a matter, etc. Still, his insight is very valued to those close enough to know him and even if his words sometimes are what they don't want to hear they know that whatever Emi says is what he believes is true and for the best. He sometimes seems much older than his age when giving the advice and radiates a calm and mature aura. Which sometimes means he misses out on things that others his age may enjoy as he opts to take care of responsibilities instead (such as caring for his family and dedicating his time to studying).

History: Emiyn doesn't have the most impressive backstory (at least in his opinion) but it isn't the happiest either. The boy's mother was a rebellious daughter to a simple fisher family who had lived on the outskirts of Matori away from villages (fear of slave raids kept them secretive and they did what they could to survive on their own). Of course the daughter was brave and didn't understand such fears as she had never encountered slavers or listened to the terrible stories that her parents told her about. Instead she began to slowly sneak away, night after night, until she found the best path along the beaches towards civilization. A young apprentice, brave and stubborn, she disappeared one evening after a dispute with her mother who had warned her to be more careful.

That night she traveled and didn't look back for many hours. Those hours turned into days, days into weeks, and weeks into months, until it was almost five years before she came home. By the time Eyraila returned she was not alone and honestly her family was in shock to see her. Surely she had either forgotten about them or been caught or killed - that was their fears at least. But rather than some happy reunion Eyraila was cold and distant, something had changed within the bold and pure girl all those years away and what she offered her family was something completely unexpected.

A small baby boy.

Eyraila held the child out to her mother and offered no true explanation. Instead she simply introduced the child, "His name is Emiyn. He's your grandson so I expect that you will care for him as I would." Her gaze was conflicted for a split second, a rare moment of weakness for Eyraila, "I cannot stay to care for him so I came here." She lowered her head, "Please do so."

Even though her parents tried to argue with her the Matori woman shook her head. She had commitments back in Oba, promises to be kept as deals had been made just to let her come here. She didn't even linger to stay for a meal and simply kissed the boy's forehead one last time before leaving him to sleep in his grandmother's arms. Since then no one has seen her. However, on occasion gifts will be delivered to the home in secret. Luxurious gifts that only the wealthy can afford - all for Emiyn.

So Emiyn was raised by his grandparents in a small secluded shack in Matori. Even when the wars were over and things were calm between Oba and Matori his family kept to their seclusion as they were not too fond of the Obans due to the past. Rather be safe than sorry, right? Emiyn, unlike his mother, was actually content and happy as he was. Eventually since life was harder for an older couple they did settle in a small village. The packages that came at random helped during times of need and his grandfather set up a small business in creating pottery and other things that the villagers would need / want to barter for. His grandmother was also a good herbalist and served as a village healer, another thing that helped them to survive in a modest setting.

For now Emiyn just works hard to assist his grandparents and does small jobs around the village for coin and for food. And when the packages do come he opens them with a small smile as even he can't find the heart to hate his mother because surely even she had her reasons for not being with him,
right? At least that was how he comforted himself whenever he did think to miss her. For Emiyn she became more a myth, a mysterious benefactor while his grandparents were truly his parents. And he'll keep working hard to do whatever he can to help them out.

Some Notes: Enjoys sketching in the sands with any drift wood, also piles said drift wood into unique pieces of art.

Is a surprisingly good barterer since it was essential to get as much as possible during hard times.

Soft spoken, very feminine / delicate appearance. Could pass as a girl if he chose to do so.

Children love him though sometimes they love to tease him for his strange stories~

Emiyn stared hard into the waters. It was as if he was seeing something beneath the waves and it was close, any moment now something would emerge from the cool depths of shimmering blue and teal that made up the Great Ocean. Next to him the sands continuously shifted in anticipation, a mirage cast by the sunlight that continued to disappear and reappear with the drifting clouds that covered the skies at random. Even though it appeared to be a lazy day, Emiyn was ready for something exciting to occur. Surely it was going to happen, he simply knew it to be so. Any second now surely something would change the quiet world around him and shift the tides so that they were dancing rather than barely lapping at the shore. Emiyn could only wait with baited breath while those passing through the beach could only shake their heads at the boy’s curious antics.

A dreamer, who could afford the luxury to laze while they had to toil about with work and the worries of reality. Those were some of the whispers though those who knew the boy and recognized him from his smaller village down the island understood better. Strange he may be but he was a hard worker who constantly was doing errands for his grandparents that lived with him in the smaller fishing village. Why he was on the shore was possibly explained by his grandparents who surely were in the market bartering while he took the time to freely explore the beach and gaze over the ocean. Hard to believe such an absent minded boy was a dedicated worker and son to his grandparents, but it was true. Who said one couldn’t dream and be helpful at the same time? At least helpful to a certain degree though it was typical for him to get caught daydreaming or spinning some fantasy tale as he worked.

Even though adults scoffed and questioned why this one boy was simply lazing on the beach with his legs crossed and his gaze intent upon watching the waves the younglings who began to gather around Emiyn seemed more interested in finding out so that they could join in, One youngling in particular scooted closer so that she could sit right next to the older boy, “Whatcha doin’ Emi?” She asked sweetly as she tried to peer into the ocean as well.

Emiyn didn’t say anything for a long moment before he finally sneaked a peek towards the girl and softly replied, “Waiting on the ocean to dance.”

The girl let out a giggle, “The ocean dancin? But it’s already moving in and out up and down, right?”

He chuckled, “I suppose, but not in the way it will be soon.”

The youngling tilted her head in confusion, “You can be pretty strange, Emi.”

“I know.” But as soon as Emiyn agreed with her the skies suddenly darkened and the clouds cast dark shadows across the beach. Winds began to pick up in power and the taste of salt and sand flew into the mouths of those not prepared for the sudden change in weather, “It’s almost time.”

“Eep!” The girl latched onto Emiyn’s arm, “What’s going on?”

“A storm silly.” Emiyn pointed as he finally moved so that he could stand and hold onto the youngling, “Watch the waves.”

And as the skies opened above them a great downpour pelted the earthlings who were running about the sands. That rain which tumbled towards the ground also splashed into the waves and the waters indeed seemed to be dancing, a strange and very peculiar dance that was wild and chaotic as only nature could be. Emiyn smiled at the sight before glancing down to the girl who was holding onto his hand, “Giki, right?” He asked in a loud voice that sounded like a gentle whisper in the whipping winds.

“Mmhmm! You remembered this time!” She yelled back though the sudden lightning caused her to yell and cling even tighter to his hand, “I like that the waters dancin’ and all but isn’t this dangerous?”

“I suppose.” Emiyn replied quietly, more to himself than anything, before casting one last wistful look towards the waves and striding across the beach to take the girl back towards the markets where her family and his waited.

The waves violently crashed against the shores, great loud noises that echoed throughout the cliffs. If one could even take a moment to hear about the cries of the ocean then the howling of the wind would fill the void so that there was no particular moment of silence. As the clouds continued to gather on the horizon a dark shadow stretched across the previously gleaming beaches of white sands. Boats were ushering into docks and very few, if any, dotted the ocean as the horizons continued to darken. Through the chaos one lone figure walked, a Matori boy who seemed at ease with the storm brewing above him.

“Pull the nets in quick!”

“Mira get those children inside now!”

“Is that the last of the fishin’ boats?”

“Aye! Looks like it’s just in time to since this seems ta be a big ‘en!”

“Oi, what’s up with you lad?” A calloused Matori hand, old and lined by the winds of the Ocean reached and touched the boy’s shoulder, “Why are you walkin’ that way?”

Blinking as the warmth of a human hand seemingly brought a light of realization back into the previously glazed expression Emiyn studied the older man, “I….needed fresh air?” He managed before offering a small smile, “I suppose then that I’ll be heading back the way I came since the winds smell of a storm.”

“As if that wasn’t hard ta guess.” The gruff Matori snorted in faint amusement, “Still isn't it a bit dangerous to walk back that way alone in this weather? Ya could stay with my family until the winds die down.”

Emiyn shook his head, “It’s really okay. My home is only down the shore a little bit.” He glanced towards the skies and reached out a hand as if to touch the whispering winds, “The storm is still out for at least one shift of the sun so I have time.” He smiled at the man before slipping out of his hands and darting down the path before the older Matori could catch him again.

“Oi!” The man just shook his head and could only hope that the strange lad was correct about the winds. Then again wasn’t that the boy who lived with the two older Matori and was always rumored to be doing such weird things? “Ack, then he’ll surely be fine.” That stated the man shifted and then went towards his own home where he could take shelter from the storm.

Meanwhile Emiyn was walking past the last of the village houses and headed towards a much more deserted path. It was decorated with loose rocks and weeds while twisting upwards towards the cliffs that overlooked the ocean. A path not often walked and one that definitely did not lead back towards his home. No he was too invested in this storm to go and take shelter in his home. While his grandparents may have assumed he was studying literature in his room or perhaps even napping through the afternoon the young Matori was instead climbing the dangerous cliffs. He was aiming towards the top something that was only achieved through several scrapes and bruises on his legs as the ground beneath his bare feet continuously shifted as the winds began to pick up and the waves crested against the shoreline. The stinging of salt against his cheeks did not seem to disturb him and instead made him feel even more energized as the storm clouds gathered above him. It was the naked energy of the natural chaos around him that called to him. If he sat here on top of the cliffs were the long grasses swayed around him the Matori felt as if his soul could soar with the winds and cry out alongside the crashes of thunder. It was in such a moment when he was sitting there cross legged on top of the cliff that a voice called out to him from behind.

“How strange you are to sit here and channel so much energy, boy.”

Ever so slowly Emiyn turned his head so that he could stare at the strange woman who approached him, “Excuse me?” He asked as words finally found their way past his chapped lips, “What do you mean?” At his words a crackle of energy sparked his fingertips as he shifted so that he was suddenly standing rather than simply sitting there on the ground. Glancing for a second at the sparks of light he brushed them away as if they were only pieces of dirt or dust to be tossed from his fingers rather than anything dangerous.

“I mean you’re basically sucking the lightning from the sky.” The Matori woman chuckled as she walked towards him with a swish of her skirts. Her own style was almost as if she had emerged from the slight cluster of trees nestled at the base of the cliffs that faced away from the beaches. Her hair fell down towards her slim waist in tangled waves and shells along with pearls and other interwoven beads and seagrasses shimmered along the aqua tresses. Her skirt was made from various colors of cotton patches while her top, something that made Emiyn’s gaze avert ever so slightly, hugged a full bodice that was basically see-through with the way the rains had soaked through the pale tan material. She was lovely if not albeit a bit strange.

Emiyn pursed his lips at the strange notion of sucking lightning from the skies. Was that why the tips of his fingers tingled as they did? And none of the thunder truly startled him - rather it was calming and expected as if the winds were whispering a preplanned melody to him. Instead of a scary noise that erupted from the skies without warning the boy found it like the loud beating of a drum as each clap was anticipated and stirred something within his soul, the same stirring that was only amplified by the lightning that now lit up the skies behind him. Yet even though his gaze had always been on the skies, always seeking out something in the mystery of nature that eternally surrounded him the boy found his gaze entranced by the way that the woman’s own gaze glimmered with each movement of the storm. If he was sucking lightning from the sky then was she one of the bolts? She vibrated with that energy and even though she stood still he could imagine her shifting from one plane to the next with the way she glowed in the gathering darkness of the storm.

If he ever believed his grandmother’s tales about sea nymphs then this woman would be the ideal character to fulfil such a fantasy. As the thought crossed his mind it was like the woman read it and her lips curved up into a smile that made her whole expression glow even more so. For someone who never had paid attention to a woman before Emiyn found his breath caught in his throat, “Who are you?” He managed to ask, the words clipped as they struggled to find voice from his startled body. Even with the storm raging around them the area where they stood and faced each other felt so very, very still. Only the feeling of rain as it pelted his skin with its warm wet kisses reminded him that they were actually in the physical plane and that this was no dream.

“I should be asking that question instead.” Quipped the other Matori back in response, her voice playful and as energetic as the winds dancing above, “Out of all the times I have wandered through a raging storm this is the first that I’ve ever witnessed such a young summoner sitting out in the middle of it all.” Amusement curled her lips even more as she strode forward to boldly reach out and touch a finger to the center of his forehead. The touch despite how quickly and forceful it was did not feel completely unwelcomed. Emiyn was more surprised than offended by the sudden warmth that spread from the tip of her finger to his forehead, “The storms seem to have kissed you, boy.”

“I...what….” Words couldn’t escape his lips fully as he stared at the woman who was less than a breath away from him now. How was it that she managed to smell like wild roses and an ocean breeze at the same time? His gaze focused on her face as the slightest of blushes decorated his cheeks and spread up to the very tips of his finned ears. Even if all logic screamed that what he was physically feeling was too real to be a dream the boy was almost tempted to believe in fantasy than reality in the moment. How could such a woman exist and be so bold in approaching him like this in the middle of the storm? Always before he saw people running away from the wild acts of nature, constantly hiding in their homes and urging to go back to his whenever the skies darkened and the sea waves began to grow rough. This woman though didn’t even look like she would want to be burdened with a house as it would be too containing for such a wild spirit.

“You heard me.” She replied with a chuckle, “Nature’s wild magic seems to have taken a liking to you. Surely you realize that?” Her finger lifted from his forehead as she reached out to tuck a stray curl, one of many that had been tossed by the winds, back behind his ear. A surprisingly motherly act that had his cheeks warming even more as he stood there in shock, “I’ve always wished to run into someone else who had such a raw and natural talent but how was I to know that today would be the day?”

“I am no ma-” He wanted to protest but the more her words echoed in his mind the more he realized there was some truth to them, he simply had been pushing it away this whole time out of worry for his grandparents. It was not that magic scared any of them but Emiyn wasn’t certain how such a choice would affect them. How could he learn without going to a mentor? No mage lived within the village that his family settled in as the last had passed away a year ago and none had come to replace them. An elderly healer did live in the village but other than that their small population of almost only thirty in the fishing had much talent for the magical arts and he did not wish to travel far from his grandparents. How could they deal without him as they had already lost a daughter all those years ago to Oba?

“You are no what?” A laugh rose out of her as she shook a finger towards him as if to chastise him for even daring to think of protesting against her words, “Don’t bother trying to lie. I have already caught you out here in this storm after all and look at how the winds curve around us as if to caress our skin rather than cut into them as they do to those not attuned to the love of nature.”

“Is that so strange?” Emiyn frowned and the slightest of creases formed in his forehead as he reflected upon her words, “I never realized.” For some reason he found himself wishing to be truthful with this woman, “I’ve always been told that my mind is too much like a dreamer’s mind as I constantly am lost in the clouds and drifting from place to place without reason. Yet while others saw that as me being a daydreamer I felt like it was the winds guiding me from place to place...is that….” He hesitated before the words finally slipped from his lips as curiosity won over, “a sign of magical abilities? But I am no healer nor have I done anything radical to pinpoint magic within me.”

“It may not appear to be radical to you but any trained summoner could recognize the way that you control the weather around you. Look-” She raised her hands with amusement, “The more you wished to hear more words the less the winds raged about us and even the rains are dancing away from this spot rather than filling it with noise.”

It was not a lie. Emiyn found his gaze widening once more as he saw the truth of her words shaping around them. It was like some curtain was wrapping around them, a shield against the harsher parts of the storm that still raged around them. Despite all of the times that such things had occured in his life this was the first that someone was actually opening his eyes to them. His whole childhood had been a continuous existence of obliviosness when it came to such matters. What had naturally happened around him had become something acceptable, something that he had ignored due to how constantly it occured for him. Now that someone was calling him out about it, however, things were shifting. He could see ever speck of rain that shimmered away from them as if bouncing against an invisible wall while the tendrils of wind, silver sparkling lights that not many could see, arched around them to allot for privacy.

“But who are you?” He found himself asking once more as his gaze turned from the skies and back towards the woman, ‘You have waltzed into my life without an introduction, Miss.”

“Is that such a necessity with you?” She arched an eyebrow as she took a few steps around him thoughtfully, “I suppose if it is a dire need to learn a name then I should provide you with that knowledge. That is if you are to come back and speak more with me else I would find introductions rather useless, no?” She laughed, her amber gaze reflecting the light of the lightning that exploded in the skies overhead, “So promise me that we will speak again, boy, and I shall give you the benefit of my name.”

Emiyn pursed his lips as if uncertain of how to answer the woman. Was this some trap, some form of contract that he was agreeing to? He had heard of spirits who drifted through the wilderness trapping souls and leading others astray into their realms. He could step forward into those woods and come out over a decade later not aged a day. At least that was how the elders spoke of those free-folk who lived in the trees throughout the untamed areas of Matori. His grandparents would be gone by the time he returned and if such a tragedy were to strike then Emiyn wasn’t even certain of how he would handle it. Such hesitation was obvious in his expression as he glanced around thoughtfully and stood there silent as the winds tousled his curls about his head.

“Well?” She rose a brow at his silence, “You wished to know who I am so how is it not fair for me to learn about you and to wish to meet again?” The Matori woman placed a hand on her hip, her bangles jingling their own metallic melody that was swept upwards towards the wailing winds, “What?” She peered forward as an idea suddenly struck her and a grin spread over her delicate features, “Are ya afraid that I’ll whisk you away to another place or something? You really shouldn’t believe all of the tales that the elders spin. It’s simply a way to pass time during a winter’s night and to entice children to behave themselves through the fears of the unknown.”

“Ah.” Emiyn bit the inside of his cheek as he contemplated her words. It was true that such things were just fantasies, but he never expected to encounter a Matori woman who reflected so many of those tales in her wild appearance. Even her words and her playful laughter seemed to reflect that of the spirits that the elders spoke of, “I apologise.” He found himself saying as he pushed through that hesitation with the power of his own curiosity, “One cannot help their mind from getting swept away during this storm especially when meeting a stranger such as yourself, Miss.” He nodded his head thoughtfully, “If you wish to meet again as long as it is in a safe place that is easily accessible near my home which I can return to afterwards in a timely manner then I will be willing to meet.” He nodded his head, “Does that satisfy you?”

“It is better than nothing. Truly one would think that I’m trying to lure you far away or something.” She teased, “As it is I can give you a name with that promise of yours. My name is Astri, boy. Now may I ask for yours or do you fear me using that power to whisk you away to another realm?”

“Emiyn.” He answered this time without hesitation as having a name and her teasing had caused the tension in his shoulders to lessen and found him more courage than before. It was a bit silly wasn’t it? To think that she was some spirit or nymph to take him away? Why would one be interested in someone such as himself anyways? He was a simple boy without much finery in life and he felt that personally he had nothing for anyone to gain from taking him. Though if he had that natural talent for magic that she spoke of then presumably it may be a reason to entice another magic user to ‘whisk’ him away. Wasn’t that a bit conceited to think? Why would he stand out at all in a world full of magic users? If anything he felt lackluster and just strange because he was a daydreamer as others stated. Or was that just how he had conditioned himself to think over the years? Emiyn shook his head before focusing on the strange woman, “I suppose I should head home soon. How should we meet again?”

Astri studied him thoughtfully, “Must you leave so quickly? I suppose though if you have a family waiting for you it would be best not to worry them by staying away during a storm like this. You do not work on the boats do you? Would be a shame for one to worry about you drowning or so.”

“Ah, yeah. I don’t work on the boats but my grandparents tend to worry when I’ve been gone for more than a few hours without notice.” He twisted his fingers together as he spoke, “I do not wish to worry them for no real reason but I tend to get distracted easily and find myself wondering where I should not without warning.” As he had today by walking out into the storm without any notice to his grandfather or grandmother. Others his age may not worry so about their families and play off worries but Emiyn had responsibilities and understood that his own mother’s disappearance from their lives had caused enough gray hairs for his grandparents as it was.

“Then allow me to escort you home.” Her words were a surprise to Emiyn who found himself staring at the woman once more as she held out a hand for him, “Come on, Emiyn. How many times must I promise that I won’t whisk you away?”

“Ah, I really can’t handle walking alone myself.”

“You promised me we could meet again and so to do such a thing I must arrange it. I do wish to escort you safely home.” She smiled and pulled his hand into her own before tugging him along after her, “So which side of the village do you live in Emiyn? I am assuming that you live a bit apart from the town else you wouldn’t have come out here so easily.”

Warmth spread from his cheeks all the way up his scalp and even down his neck at the sudden closeness of the woman as she pulled him to her side and began to guide them down the cliffside, “Why are you doing this?” He found himself asking as they navigated down the stone strewn path together. Everything about today was so strange - which meant it surely was an unbelievable situation considering that someone as odd as him was calling it strange! Emiyn was in disbelief that this Matori woman was not only real but also leading him along with her fingers tightly interwoven with his, “Not that I don’t appreciate the concern but why all the trouble to make certain I get home safely?”

“Because I’m interested in you and want to make an investment of our meeting.” She replied without hesitation as they walked along the path, “I wondered why I agreed to come to such a place and meeting you has helped to affirm my beliefs. We were simply meant to be you and me.”

His heart jumped in his chest and the boy’s gaze widened, “Ex-excuse me?” Seriously what was this situation?

“Oh don’t take it like a declaration of love or anything, Emiyn.” She laughed, “I have other plans but you will see in due time since I have to make the arrangements first.”

“I won’t lie to you that I’m thoroughly confused but I will wait and see.” He peeked towards her, a flush still decorating his cheeks as he was not accustomed to such a beautiful woman - or any woman for that matter - being so close to him. He could even feel the heat from her skin through the few droplets of rain that still fell to the ground around them, “Just do not assume I will be agreeable with all of your requests so please feel free to inform me of your intentions in advance.”

“Aye, aye.” She smiled towards him before boldly nudging him with her hip, “So do we turn left or right here?”

“Right.” He pointed over towards the familiar path that danced along the outskirts of the beaches and touched the few trees that alluded to the forests that dotted the areas behind the cliffs, “I live towards this area where the village is easily accessed but still far enough away. My grandparents prefer the silence and even though they rely on the villagers it is still easier to find peace next to the ocean rather than in the middle of a crowd.” Ack, why explain such things to a stranger? Emiyn closed his gaze for a moment as if to shake off whatever spell she had on him. Even if there was none the boy couldn’t understand why he felt so at ease to open himself up to this stranger. Was it because Astri also knew the allure of nature and how its magic called to one’s soul?

“I’ll take note of that.” Her voice broke through his thoughts as they walked, “So you live with your grandparents...that must be hard when one doesn’t have their children to help them out in old age. I’m certain that they are thankful for your presence then.” It was a thoughtful statement as if she were trying to understand some puzzle that she had yet to reveal to Emiyn. Rather than being troubled by it, however, the boy was more intrigued than anything. What was this woman plotting for the future?

Emiyn simply nodded and the rest of their walk was fairly silent save for a few occasional questions that were nonsensical to him. Hobbies, favorite colors, foods, and the like. But why ask such things? Just for small talk? His gaze continued to flicker between Astri and the slowly brightening skies. It appeared that the storm was mostly over now and hopefully there would be clear skies for the rest of the evening. It was good timing as they turned and saw the stone path which led to the small thatched cottage which housed his grandparents and him.

“Are you escorting me all the way because I doubt anything will happen those few feet to my front door.”

“You never know.” She smiled, “Come on don’t be shy now. Aren’t we good acquaintances by this point?”

Emiyn sighed before finally relenting. Hopefully he could open the door and be done with this whole situation. Next time he could be better prepared to deal with this woman who had come out of no where to join him. Such hopes faded, however, once the front door opened for them and he saw his grandmother stepping forward, “Mame.” He found himself speaking out of surprise and the elderly Matori woman glanced up.

“Emiyn, there you are.” She brushed some dirt from her skirts before tilting her head to glance at the woman standing by her grandson’s side, “Who is…”

“Astri.” Replied Emiyn’s companion as she let go of his fingers to stride across the front yard and towards the older Matori woman, “It’s a pleasure to meet you. I came with Emiyn since I encountered him along the way from the village.”

“Ah, I see. May I ask why?”

“To introduce myself.” Astri smiled as she held out a hand in greeting, “I’m the new summoner for the village. I’m here to assist the ships by wind calling and to do the rituals for the village necessary during the sea festival and such. I was hoping to introduce myself to all of the families and finding Emiyn made my decision of where to start so much easier.”

“Ah!” Emiyn’s grandmother beamed, “A pleasure to meet you, Miss Astri. I never expected such a young and lovely woman to become our newest summoner.”

“Hehe, isn’t that true? They were surprised when I offered to take the position but you could just say I had a feeling about this place? It’s a nice change of scenery and everyone seems so kind here.”

“I’m glad you think so. I hope you settle in well - my family doesn’t own much but if there’s anything we can do to assist you please let us know.” Emiyn just stared as his grandmother greeted the new summoner with warmth, “Care to join us for dinner while you’re here? I have stew and fresh bread in the oven. Oh! My manners are a bit rusty as well - my name is Cylrisa and my husband, Aynmon, should be back shortly to greet you as well.”

“Are you sure it won’t be a problem?”

“Not at all. Emiyn, dear, please help come set the table while Miss Astri makes herself comfortable?” His grandmother shook her head at him, “You’re fortunate to have run into her since I saw that was a rather nasty storm. I hope your grandfather makes it home in a timely manner.”

“I’m...sure he will.” Emiyn found himself saying as he brushed past both women to enter the house. The new summoner for the village? Who knew?! The Matori boy shook his head in confusion and frustration before going towards the kitchen where he could set the table. He just prayed the gods would give him strength to get through this meal and to figure out what was going on in his life now that this Astri had wandered into it.

Conclusion: After wandering out in a storm Emiyn encounters Astri the new mage in town who claims he has a sense for natural magic as well.

“Why out of all times would she send an actual letter?!”

Emiyn leaned around the corner as he caught whispers of anger from both of his grandparents. When he actually managed to get a bit of vision the boy saw his grandfather pacing while waving a piece of parchment back and forth, “She wants to see him? What happened to that whole dramatic story about how she could never come back and that it was for our best interests if she abided by that man’s rules?”

“Oh honey.” Emiyn’s grandmother sat on the floor and clutched at her skirts, “I don’t know….what if she’s in trouble? Or ill?”

“Hah! From the way this letter reads I doubt that is the case!” His grandfather crumpled up the parchment and tossed it towards his wife, “I say we tear it to pieces and just let the winds take care of such foolishness. Why even bring it up to Emiyn? He’s already lived fine without her being here. And all those nights of holding a small child and then later having to explain to him that no we aren’t his parents but are instead his grandparents!” Exasperation had him raising his voice once more before he too sat down next to his wife with a huff, “Do we really want to risk breaking his heart to appease the wishes of a fanciful daughter that we haven’t seen in years?”

Usually Emiyn was a reserved sort who didn’t interrupt conversations but to hear about his mother like this made the boy bolt forward, “Why not?” He replied boldly as he glanced at his surprised grandparents, “Can’t I go see her if I wish? It’s not like I’m a child anymore and if I’m to get hurt then I would like to decide it for myself!”

“Emiyn…” His grandmother reached out towards him before dropping her hand to the floor, “We know you’re older and are a very mature person….it’s just….”

“We know your mother and you don’t.” Gruffed his grandfather, “She’s only heartache and trouble.”

“Tyr!”

“It’s true. Don’t baby him.” His grandfather glanced towards Emiyn with a sigh, “Obviously your life is your own but you are my son, grandson, whatever.” He gestured towards the crumpled parchment, “Take it and read it. Think on things and let us know what you’d like to do.”

Nodding Emiyn walked across the room and slowly bent so that he could pick the parchment up. Obviously his fingers hesitated and it felt heavier than normal paper but eventually he did steel himself so that he could shove it in his pocket, “I’ll see you both at dinner.” He simply stated before turning from the room and leaving the house.

Barefoot and clad in only his lounging clothes Emiyn made his way towards the little area of beach that tickled the backside of his family’s home. Not many came here so that much he was thankful for. Why was it that he could spend stormy days in a haze walking about as if in a dream but whenever his mother came up in discussions his mind was crystal clear? Everything was sharp, especially the pain in his heart. He had tried years ago to see her and his grandparents had no idea where she resided and they had told him that she could not be bothered with family.

So why now?

Glancing down at the crumpled parchments resting in his hands the boy slowly unfolded the paper so that he could read it.

”Dear mama and papa - I know it’s been quite a while since we’ve actually spoken but I hope you all are doing well! I know my packages have been coming through so surely those have offered some comfort in lue of my absence. The coin as well should have sufficed to help you out!

Anyways, that’s besides the point. I realize that lovely Emiyn should be 17 years by now and while thinking of it I realized how much I dearly want to see him. After speaking with my love I have been given the opportunity to see Emiyn! The years have softened his heart and he is more than willing to let my son back into my life. Can you believe it? Obviously I am still wary as Oba is not without its temptations and traps...but I would love to see him again even if for a small chat.

Could you please consider letting Emiyn know my intent and allowing him to go into Oba?

Please let me know.

Love,

Your Daughter.”

His grandparents didn’t want him to go. That much was obvious. Emiyn studied the note and sighed. Did he even wish to go? He had grown content living here with his grandparents and had long ago shoved any hope of meeting his mother to the side. He wasn’t that child who cried at night after his mother so why should he now let her have a chance to come into his life?

“This is surprisingly difficult.” He murmured before placing the parchment down so that he could sit on the beach and study the ocean. If anything at least the ocean kept him calm. As he watched he noticed a boat leaving the docks. Astri. It surprised him to think of her but seeing the boats made the boy think of the wind caller. Hadn’t she wanted to take him on as a pupil? That was something else he had never fully decided upon. Emiyn knew he was destined to be a mage, knew that elemental magic was his forte, but for now he just had some personal things to resolve.

Personal things to resolve…

Maybe that was it. He studied the parchment one last time with a heavy sigh. It wouldn’t be to hope for some relationship, no it would be to see her and kill out that final bit of curiosity. He would go see her and then hopefully leave her behind in Oba forever before coming back to take up Astri’s offer. It was admittedly a decision which brought a bit of fear and apprehension to the boy but he knew that finally the time had come.

It was time to leave his grandparent’s home and to see the world -and his mother- for himself.

Conclusion:

Emiyn has always lived with his grandparents and because of his deep love for them he always was an obedient child. When he grew older and realized his questions about his mother upset his grandparents he immediately stopped asking, stopped longing for her. He shoved away the curiosity about who she was and as he grew older the childhood longing dissipated. Now that she has offered to let him come and visit the boy has to make the choice to leave home, upset his grandparents, and to risk everything.

However, it is not that he wants to be coddled by her. Rather Emiyn has decided he will go to Oba so that he can say goodbye to his mother and finally embark on his own adventure as he plans to come back to Matori and learn magic from Astri. Meeting his mother will be the first step in Emiyn cutting loose of his childish longings so that he can embrace his future responsibilities as a wind caller.
