Background

The Mages, powerful beings with great magical power. Great intellect and the ability to learn and adapt to any situation. The ideals of the kingdom are simple. Further knowledge and to continuously push the bounds of what is possible. This simple idea was the spark that caused the first of their order to bend fire to its will. From there it only grew. Life and death, space and potions. All of it bent to their will. This insatiable desire to learn is what brought the mages their strength and power. It was the key to allowing them to rise from the dirt up to the level of dragons and elves. Somewhere along the line this mission was lost. Kings got fat and they lost sight of the purpose. They got distracted by the pleasures of life and were no longer fit to rule.

After centuries of this misguided rule the people rose up upturned the kingdom. A new king rose to the throne and the future of Karst for the first time in a while seemed bright. Though the one that rose to the crown left soon after. The kingdom fell into chaos and it seemed tear itself apart. A lone mage saw the inevitability of greed that surrounded this kingdom. He rose from the ashes and uprooted Karst college and moved. Using magic the castle and college of Karst was moved to an island far to the north.

Now isolated and pulled from the despair that plagued them Karst is back on its path of pushing boundaries and reinventing what is possible. Any are allowed within the walls of Karst but those who try to inhibit the pursuit of knowledge and progress.

Setting

User Image

Karst now resides far to the north. An island surrounded by ice and fire. It is a snow covered land that rarely sees the sun. Where there aren't glaciers there are volcanoes. This land despite its hostile appearance is quite fertile. The geothermal hot springs beneath gives the castle plenty of warmth and the gardens nearby are run by hydroponics utilizing the minerals in the springs to ensure proper growth.

The walls for the castle are monstrous in nature and with this place being built on a mountain top it is highly defensible. This fortress is nigh impregnable, a place of knowledge and teaching. This citadel is impressive in nature and tends to draw awe from others.

Descriptions

Archmage: The Archmage is regarded as the most powerful mage in the college. The Archmage was typically a professor or even the college elder. The Archmage is considered the one who ensures the progress and continuation of magic. He is tasked with going out into the world learning new things and to continuously push the boundaries of what is believed possible. The council is made up of three individuals and the Archmage is one of them. The Archmage is one of two people trusted with the Forbidden magic and the top secrets of Karst. Although the Archmage is privy to this information it does not have the authority to distribute it and can only discuss such matters with the College elder unless given explicit permission.

College Elder: The council that composes the College of Karst is made up of several people. The College Elder is one of them, the College Elder represents the head of the magic college and is responsible for protecting the college and ensuring its knowledge is maintained. The College Elder is the other person trust with the forbidden magic of karst. They have the authority to bring people into the fold and can show forbidden magic to others. The Archmage isn't even afforded this right.

The Hand of Karst: The final seat on the council is held by the Hand of Karst. This mage is in charge of ensuring the financial stability and progress of the kingdom. This a very trusted mage and while they are not always powerful they usually have a very bright mind. This person is highly respected while they do not get special access to the forbidden knowledge within Karst they are familiar to the inner workings of the kingdom.

College Professor: These mages are typically skilled in a single area and work at the college. They usually are encouraged to travel and learn more about their area of focus. These mages typically are hailed as being very strong with a focus in learning all there is to know about a discipline rather than honing it for the purpose of fighting. Though don't underestimate them, professors are some of the most knowledgable mages and in this kingdom knowledge almost always equals power.

Battle Mage: Mages that are very skilled with fighting. They typically fill guard roles or such. They are granted many freedoms and besides when they are needed for duties they are usually free to come and go as they please.

Adept: A well rounded skilled mage, most older mages who aren't professors or battle mages typically fall under this category. They are fundamentally sound and able to hold their own. This is the most common title for a mage that is proficient.

Commoner: Practitioner of magic. Your everyday Mage. They were born with no issues magically and are able to attune their body properly. Unless state, everyone starts at commoner rank,

Civilian: Citizens of the Karst Kingdom. Not necessarily magical. Can perform some spells, but not seen as gifted in the arts. Failures of the Kingdom some call them. These also includes refugees in which enter the Kingdom. If gracious enough to be taught magic, refuges to the Kingdom are able to learn 1 discipline (Natural or Neutral with permission) from a Mage who chooses to teach them. Be warned, Karst Mages rarely teach those who are not mages themselves. However, surely there is someone around who may do so.
