      Name: Amalric "Lark" Belwater

      Stage: Prentice

      Race: Pureblood Wind

      Gender: Male

Description: Lanky. Pale. "Electric" blue eyes. Light blonde hair (dyed black).

Clothing: Cloak, boots, pants, gloves. Practical and nothing unduly ornate (blacks and browns/beige tones), but warm and covering most of his body since he is initially often in the Zena region.

      Accessories: Nothing special.

3 Base Traits: Whiny - emotional - proud.

Personality: Amalric has a lot to complain about. Or, he certainly thinks he does. The world just never quite does right by him, and he's quick to see how unfair things are to him, how bad a situation is, how little people are willing to see his perspective - and so on. He doesn't hesitate to tell people about these ails, either, and if someone in a crowd is going to make a fuss, Amalric will probably be one of the first to pipe up. While some of his complaints are well-founded, a number of them are less so, and due to his eagerness to take issue with things, he easily comes off as pessimistic and whiny. There is some saving grace in the fact that, presented with a possible solution, he is often willing to do something about whatever problem he's facing and at least attempt to change things. This isn't always the case, however, and those who come to know him well will likely learn to simply tune out some of his whining entirely, lest it become too irritating to deal with on an extended basis.

Though he may not seem so initially due to his introversion and tendency to withdraw and keep much of his thinking and feeling to himself—particularly around anyone he’s not wholly comfortable with—Amalric is actually quite an emotional individual. How much this shows depends on who he is with and the gravity of the circumstances, but generally whatever he feels, Amalric feels a lot of: fear, curiosity, anger, embarrassment, passion—and sometimes, despite his better intentions, his emotions severely cloud his thinking. His hurt or upset over an event that might have been a misunderstanding can cause him to hold a hurtful grudge, avoid a person, or find it difficult to work through to a happy medium. His insecurity or second-guessing and stipulating can lead to anxiety that cripples him from taking certain chances or opportunities.

He is also, at least in part due to his emotional tendency for over-feeling, a coward. Whether it be safeguarding his pride, his physical safety, or his emotional well-being, Amalric tends always towards caution and self-preservation, avoiding risk whenever possible in all its forms, especially thanks to being self-aware of the fact that, left to their own devices, his passions can lead him down dangerous roads if he is not thinking clearly. In conjunction with this, the only time risk-prevention does tend to fall by the wayside is when his emotions, as mentioned above, do get the better of him despite his best efforts, and a swell of anger or burgeoning passion causes him to lash out and/or say or do something rash without properly thinking it through. Naturally, these portions of his personality often conflict, and he actively works to hold onto his caution over any emotional overrides wherever possible.

When all is said and done, however — with all his insecurities and namable flaws accounted for — Amalric still has his pride, which he clings to like a torch in a dark tunnel. Amalric takes great pride in the few things about himself which he considers to be exceptional: his talent for magic, his skill with a pen and for the written word, and his wit generally speaking. These, to him, are core aspects of himself which define him and which he exhibits special confidence in. He does not consider himself to be especially physically adept (strong, graceful), attractive, charming, or funny, but adores spellwork, immersing himself in it, and in his writing—and books in general—and considers himself well-read and a talented-but-ever-learning mage.

History

Amalric was the first and only child born of Gandrin Belwater and Jannis Graen. Prior to his conception, his parents lived a typical — if especially ‘adventurous’ — nomadic life, traipsing wherever they pleased and selling ‘miracle drugs’ or ‘lucky trinkets’ wherever they could—while doing a little permanent borrowing from the locals where necessary to make up the difference, reselling the pilfered goods at a later date further on down the road.

Gandrin, on the one hand, was the second-born child of an especially wealthy — by Sautian standards — wind family who had made a very successful living as cobblers, catering to increasingly well off and high class Zenan customers. Unfortunately in his father’s eyes, Gandrin was the family’s deep disappointment. While Gandrin’s older sister, Elayna, carried forward the family business, working closely with her parents and marrying early to begin a stable household dedicated to the task and furthering their name, Gandrin frolicked. Despite multiple attempts by his family, Elayna included, to convince him to settle down and take some responsibility, Gandrin much preferred traveling where his feet took him and living day to day, moment by moment.

Jannis was an equal or even greater ‘free spirit’ — a thief, a tramp, and a liar in the eyes of Gandrin’s family — and the two took to each other immediately and with relish, much to the Belwater family’s dismay. The single redeeming quality of Jannis, in Gandrin’s family’s mind, was that the woman was infertile. So she had been told by many a physician, so she had told Gandrin, and so had Gandrin told his family whenever they ventured anything along the lines of, ‘But really Gandrin, you need to get away from that woman. What if you get her pregnant?’ At least this way, they consoled themselves, nothing would tie him down to her, and eventually, eventually he would grow bored.

      Years passed.

      The pair never wedded.

And yet, with each passing season, it seemed less likely that the two would ever part, and Gandrin’s family grew resigned to the fact that they had lost a son. Then, Jannis got pregnant. Ironically, while the family had always considered her infertility the woman’s one boon, it was pregnancy and the early years immediately after giving birth to their son that drove she and Gandrin apart. Though neither of them especially wanted the child, Jannis refused to give him — her one miracle child — up for adoption, and Gandrin, hoping that either the burdens of child-rearing would change her mind or that somehow they would make it fit into their lifestyle, attempted to work with her. But responsibility was not their strong suit. Planning was not their strong suit. And nurturing certainly was not either.

In his toddling years, between two and four, Amalric was left for periods of time unspecified beforehand with his Aunt Elayna, Uncle Besbin, and their three daughters at the time: Eyme, Elyse, and Brinnah. Sometimes days, sometimes weeks, and once for a period just over three months, Amalric was left entirely in the care of his aunt and uncle before his parents retrieved him as though nothing irregular had happened. Elayna and her husband, while not particularly thrilled to be burdened randomly with the task of raising her wayfaring brother’s b*****d child, cooperated without surface argument out of some combination of pity for the growing toddler and a sense of responsible superiority. Behind her brother’s back, Elayna and her husband delighted in subtly — and sometimes not so subtly — lamenting to their friends Gandrin’s irresponsible ways and garnering pity and moral support for their noble cause in caring for this needing child.

As Amalric aged, this trend did not improve. By his sixth birthday, Gandrin and Jannis’ disputes with each other — initiated by the wedge ‘he’ had put in their relationship, only to fester and grow like an open wound from there — had resulted in their semi-permanent separation. By his seventh birthday, he was living all but entirely under his aunt and uncle’s care, broken only by the occasional visit from his mother — whose presence his aunt and uncle detested and made this fact vehemently clear — and his father, who was only slightly more tolerated and occasionally took Amalric on brief trips. By his eleventh year, Amalric had grown enough to dread these trips and whine intensely about them afterward: ‘I don’t get a bed when I’m with him!’ ‘Sometimes he doesn’t even make dinner!’ ‘Once, I almost got eaten!’ When Gandrin came five days after Amalric’s thirteenth name day, purporting to be ready to take his son out with him, Elayna and Besbin refused.

In the ensuing argument, which escalated to screaming amidst the various parties, Amalric fled to his room within his aunt and uncle’s house. Gandrin’s departure that day, which he watched from that second-story window, was the last he would see of his father for several years to come.
