So much so, that she jumped right into collecting some ash herself, interested in getting a flute sometime in the future. She knew she probably wouldn't get enough before she had to leave, but the boy was nice enough to give her a pouch to keep it in. After much playing in the ashes, Rose returned to the pokemon center, covered in soot. Fynx shook her head with a sigh at the sight. Ultimately, Marx decided he didn't need to ask Flygon. She probably wouldn't be able to focus for the contest anyway. He could use Chansey, instead, and just teach her work up to help round out her moves. It didn't need to be perfect, after all-- this was his first contest. He just needed to get through it, see how it went, how things worked. He didn't necessarily need to win. Releasing Chansey once they reached the town, he crouched down, grinning. "Hey Chansey! Wanna participate in a contest? I know you're really tough, so if you're willing, I was thinking I could enter you in the tough contest! I haven't really done one myself, but we could learn together!" he suggested. Chansey almost immediately placed a hand on her.... hip? And swung her weight to the other side, giving him a look. His expression gradually became a bit more pleading. ".... Please? I'll enter you in whatever contest you want next time....?" he half-begged.
She was very, very ready to decline, but suddenly, a thought popped into her head-- what would that pretty milotic do? He would probably agree.... So maybe if she agreed, that would finally catch his attention? Hm, it was a long shot... but she might as well try. Rolling her eyes, she gave a begrudging agreement, and, beaming, Marx stood, quickly changing her moveset, and heading inside. It took a bit of talking, but Marx got the general understanding of how the contest would work. He was under dressed and a bit under prepared, but he was entering a 'Beginner's Round', so it was alright for now. He registered Chansey, and was allowed back to a dressing room, where they could get ready while another contestant was registered for them to compete against.

With his hand on his hip and his trusty Axew by his side Todd finished getting signed up for his contest, flashing the attendant behind the counter a grateful nod and a 'thank you' before he was led away, his destination the changing room. "If you have any items you want to use on your pokemon before the Appeal portion of the contest now would be the time," a woman explained, but was whisked away before allowing the boy a chance to ask her any question, some emergency or another requiring her immediate attention. "Hmm. Well, I don't think we have any items we could use, Ax, so let's just... take some deep breathes?" the boy suggested, turning to him, to which his partner agreed. In and oooout, iiiiiiiin and ouuuuut. The two practiced their breathing and focused on mentally preparing themselves, inhaling confidence and exhaling doubt, and were still doing their breathing exercises when another attendant, a man this time, informed the two that they would be gathering on the stage. Marx couldn't stop bouncing on the balls of his feet, and honestly, it was making Chansey want to sock him. She could use her new move and-- no wait it wasn't a physical attack. Whatever. She looked over as they were informed that another participant had signed up, and the two exchanged a look. "Come on!" Marx urged, excitedly moving forward to lead the way out. He paused, then looked thoughtfully back, before simply recalling Chansey (who looked a bit indignant at the act) and following after the woman that had retrieved him. He noticed another boy, probably the other contestant, on the other side of the stage, and swallowed a bit as the woman slipped out on stage to introduce the contest, and the contestants. When it was his turn, he stepped out, flashing a grin to the judges, and tossing Chansey's ball up in the air. It occurred to him that they had literally never practiced, but luckily, she'd been there during the explanation, and she seemed to get the gist of it. She came out spinning, somersaulting through the air, and then pounding her fist into the ground as she landed, before straightening, her eyes narrowed as she struck a.... 'tough' pose and faced the judges, her hands on her... 'hips'. Marx grinned a bit sheepishly, but tried to recover, flashing another smile before recalling her. Hopefully.... that worked well enough....

Holding back the urge to peek out from behind the curtains Todd kept himself occupied by, first, withdrawing Axew and then taking a few last-minute deep breaths. While doing this his competition, another male probably a few years older than him, took the other half of the stage and Todd held back from waving at him, they were competing against each other after all. After introductions were made the contest started off with the other boy, whose name he learned was Marx, went first and sent forth a blue-tinted Chansey. Todd watched the pokemon's debut with a carefully reserved expression, though inwardly he was more than a bit impressed, after she had cleared the stage Todd strode forward. The boy dipped into a bow while simultaneously reaching for Axew's pokeball, and when he popped back up he released the dragon into the air.
Curling himself into a ball Axew spun once and then twice before he began hurtling to the ground, and at the last second he unfurled his body and clasped his hands together tightly, his balled up fists hitting the ground just hard enough to shake the earth. Pushing off the ground Axew landed on his feet, then held his breath in his odd attempt not to lose his balance. Behind him Todd burst into a grin, playfully flexed his biceps in a typical 'muscleman pose', and then recalled Axew in a flash of red light.

Escaping the nearly unbearable heat of Mount Chimney, the group found themselves in a barren land, barely covered in any sort of vegetation. Only the strongest plants could manage life here. Among these plants rested a large sparse town. As Evan walked, he found himself in what appeared to be snow fall, but upon closer inspection he found it was actually ash that fell from the volcano above them. The wind kept it remote to a specific route, which Evan was thankful for.
Once he reached a Pokemon Center, the male quickly entered and brought Undine up to Nurse Joy for inspection. While she was being treated the male headed back out into the town. Maybe he'd be luck enough to find an opponent that Aki could handle. It wasn't long before he eventually ran into his first opponent either. A Jigglypuff. A normal-type would be alright, right? Despite the appearance of the puffball, Evan wasn't going to take this one lightly. Regarldess, he released Aki to fight. "Alright, Aki, use Overheat!"

Well as far as holding his own, Aki did pretty well. Thanks to some seriously high leveled moves though. Not every battle was going to be that easy, as Evan would quickly find out. Exiting the Pokemon Center behind him, a young woman narrowed her gaze at Evan, then quickly approached, tapping him on the shoulder ."Yo. You training that runt or something?" She asked spotting the fainted Jigglypuff nearby. Evan turned and quickly nodded. "Yea." He replied. The girl grinned, and after snapping off a ball from her belt she held it up. "Fancy a battle between two trainers than?" She asked.Evan thought this over for a moment before he gave a sharp nod. "Sure." With that the two made some distance between one another and began the battle.

Despite fainting near the end, Aki had held his own pretty well against the girl's Pokemon. Evan, with Aki tucked under his arm he gave out a chuckle. "Aki did well on his own for awhile." The girl nodded, recalling her last fallen Pokemon. "Yea, he did. I think he'll grow up in to a powerful Blaziken one day." The girl replied. "Anyway, lets get our Pokemon healed up." Evan agreed. Heading back into the Pokemon Center.
After a few hours dilly dallying, and getting to know his recent opponent, the two of them parted ways. Apparently she was heading back to Mauville to meet with some family. Evan on the other hand learned of a place called Mount Meteor. Well, if he'd had Evangeline's memories he'd know that place all to well, but after hearing there might be some good training there, Evan gathered his team and started off in that direction. The mountain would eventually lead him to Rustboro City.
Along the way the group was halted by two Swellow. The birds looked fairly formitable, and apparently weren't going to let Evan pass without a fight. Sending forward Aki and Undine to fight, Evan hoped they could make it quick.
