Running

Nano 2013

Pounding footsteps rang out as Malus’ feet hit the track. She wasn’t used to running in large circles or for a long time. She was starting to breathe heavy but the preteen continued to push herself running a few more laps. Panting she flopped down on the ground and drank from the bottle of water she had brought with her. After a few minutes her breathing had returned to normal. A few more minutes and she’d start running again. “I should probably see if I can find a stop watch or something for cheap” She said to herself. Having one would help her see if she was getting any faster. To be a good hero she needed to be fast on her feet. The longer and faster she could run the better, everyday she’d add another lap to her run and hopefully she’d start going through them faster as well. After all it would not do her much good if she was fast but had no endurance and got tired easily. She would look like a very silly hero indeed. Standing up she jogged over to the starting line for the track and got into the running pose that the track members usually did.

The first few times she had tried to start running like that she had failed miserably and fell flat on her face because she had pushed off wrong, the second time she had managed to get off the ground but then stumbled and fell. A few cuts, scrapes and bruises latter she decided to try and figure out what to do with her apple while she was running, before she broke something. Because taking off from a runner’s start with it in her hand obviously was not working. Which was probably the reason most of the people who ran track did not carry things when they were running. So for a while she ended up just running and jogging with her apple in her hand, not bothering with the push off start.

It was a big dilemma after all, what does one do with a magic apple when they can’t hold onto it? Leaving it at home was not an option, what if something happened while she was out and she needed to transform? Not to mention she always felt weird when it wasn’t right there with her. And if she left it on the ground while she was doing her run it would be unattended someone could steal it! or worse it eat. Malus had no idea what would happen if her apple got eaten and she wasn’t very keen on finding out, it was a part of her after all, it had been with her for her whole life.

She thought about putting it on like a necklace or something by wrapping it in wire or sticking it an a plastic thing an wearing it on her neck but then she realized that it would probably jump up and hit her in the face while she was running and she didn’t need a black eye. There were a few other ideas, some weirder than others but in the end she settled for buying one of those waist pouch things, belts that had a pocket thing on them that was large enough for her to put her apple in. While she still preferred holding it in one of her hands, it was good to be able to have both of them free and not worry about it rolling away. Or worrying that something would happen to it, if it was not in her hand then it would always be right there at her hip. Malus finished running her laps and grabbed her water, sitting down she finished it and rested for a few moments before finding her way over to a trash can to throw the bottle and head home.

Red

Nano 2013

Red, red was undoubtedly Malus’ favorite color. It was the color of her apple and her hair. It was also the color of her large old leather-bound book of fairy tales. Red was the color people seemed to associate with apples although there were different colors of apples. A soft sigh escaped Malus’ lips as she looked around her bland apartment room. She'd replaced the knobs on the cabinets with apple shaped versions and stuck a few stickers up but overall it remained a boring white. She pondered if she should try painting it if she managed to a save up enough money. Red was a pretty color, it would look good to her, but would it be too much red? The carpet was a dark red after all. She supposed she could alternate between stripes of red and white. She shook her head at that thought; her room would look too much like a candy cane then.

She sat down on the floor and spun her apple on her finger "what do you think I should do?" She asked it. As usual it didn't respond, not that she was expecting it to. She flopped down onto the maroon carpet, maybe a lighter shade of red would work? She wasn't sure how her musing about the color red had led to painting the apartment, something she'd probably never do. Still there were a lot of reasons to like red; to some people it was the color of love because the rose, the flower of love was assumed to be red. But as to why she liked the color so much, she did not know.

Was she red and that was the reason she liked it so much? Not skin wise of course, she was more a light yellowy but her apple was red and it was a part of her, she spent of a lot of time thinking about her apple and its relationship to her. Was it her? Was she it? Wait those questions were pretty much the same weren’t they. She sighed; the tech at the dreamery weren’t any help with the questions. She guessed it was one of those things you’re supposed to figure out yourself. But how was she supposed to go about figuring out if she was an apple? And if she was an apple did that mean that she was a cannibal if she ate apples? Was eating apples a bad thing? Malus had never had an apple before, but she heard they were good.
She shook her head as she stood up she was over thinking things, she liked it better when she was flittering around form one place to the next or reading her fairytales and manga and watching tv. Saving people she enjoyed that to, it wasn’t that she didn’t like thinking it was just that sometimes she over though things or got way to serious and stuff. It was silly to let yourself be sucked in by questions like why do you like a color and stuff it was best to just live life and have fun after all they say life is short.

She went over to the large window in the room; it had a perfect view of the sunset. She smiled as she watched the sun sink below the horizon; the sky was painted with a pretty red. Maybe red was the color of change; it was there at dawn and dusk when the night and day switch places. Well whatever the reason was, red was and would always be her favorite color.

Breakfast

Nano 2013

Malus wandered around the kitchen, grabbing things out of cabinets and the refrigerator and setting them on the counter before she brought down some bowls of varying sizes. She grabbed the large spoons and looked around to double check that she had everything. Hopefully this attempt at cooking would go well. Picking up the box of pancake mix she read over the directions and scoped out the amount of mix needed for a small serving of pancakes.

Her long red hair was tied back as she took a measuring cup over to the sink and filled it with the correct amount of water. She double checked to make sure she had the right amount of water before pouring it into the bowl and mixing it. Once she was done mixing Malus turned the stove one and put the frying pan on it, letting it heat up she put the box of pancake mix away. She poured some of the mix into the pan and waited for it to cook before flipping it over; some more waiting and then she scoped it out and placed it on a plate. Cooking sure seemed to have a lot of waiting. She repeated the pancake cooing processes a few times before grabbing a few chocolate-chips and mixing them in with the pancake batter. Chocolate chip Pancakes were on the menu of the breakfast places she went to. They were really good and she figured it couldn't be too different than normal pancakes, you just added the chocolate chips in right?

Wait, flip, wait, remove, and pour. Pancake cooking was a lot more repetitive than she had though it would be. Why was there so much waiting involved in cooking? She was tempted to take them off earlier but had learned the hard way that you couldn't rush cooking; you also should not get distracted while cooking either. Which made cooking not only boring but annoying because she couldn't do anything else while she was making it.

Luckily pancakes were still faster cookers despite her internal complainants and it wasn't long before Malus had used up the rest of the batter and was able to put the spoon and bowl in the sink and move onto the next course of action. Eggs. She grabbed one of the eggs out of the carton that was resting on the counter and cracked it on the side of the frying pan. It wasn't a clean break and she had to quickly scoop the egg shell pieces out with a fork before they got cooked into the egg. The next one went better and there were not shell pieces in the egg. Malus smiled as she cooked, she cracked a few more eggs, trying out different styles of cooking them while taking off the ones that seemed to be finished. Once she was done she put the plate of eggs over on the table with the plate of pancakes and moved onto the next and final task, Bacon.

She scraped the frying pan clean once again and laid a few strips of bacon on it and waited for them took cook. She was starving by now; the smell and the sizzling of her attempts at cooking were enough to jump start her stomach into pestering her to eat some of them. She put the spatula in the sink and grabbed the tongs so she could flip the bacon; it was easier it grab the strips with tongs than to try and get them out with spatulas she had been told. Soon it would be finished and she could actually eat the food! She took half the bacon out of the pan and left the rest in, apparently the only difference between chewy and crispy bacon was how long it was cooked. She waited a bit before poking it with the tongs and seeing if it was done. Seeing that it appeared to be done she pulled the rest of the bacon out and set it on the plate.

She shut the stove off and put the frying pan in the sink before moving the plate to the table with the other two. Malus grabbed some Saran Wrap and wrapped up some of the pancakes before placing some of the eggs and bacon in containers. She had cooked too much for her to eat all at once but it was good to have food ready for the next day, or to have as a snack if she wanted some. She moved the remaining food to one plate and stuck the other two in the sink; she'd do the dishes after she ate and sat down at the table with her silver ware. "Let’s see how it tastes shall we?" She said to her apple which was resting in the middle of her table.

Malus cut a piece off one of the plain pancakes and ate it. She was pleased to find that it tasted good. "Looks like I did it!" She cheered to her apple after she had finished swallowing her food. The chocolate-chip pancakes were even better, she loved chocolate. She had devoured her pancakes before realizing she still had to try the bacon and eggs. The eggs did not taste too bad but the bacon was delicious. "Oh it looks like I forgot to get a drink" she said with a laugh and skipped off to the fridge to pour herself a glass of milk.

She settled back down at the table and finished eating, and drinking her breakfast. Once she was finished she picked up her apple and moved it closer to the sink before grabbing her plate and starting to do the dishes. She would have had the apple on the counter while she was cooking but she didn't want to accidentally knock it into the frying pan or something. A little soapy water wouldn't hurt it but she didn't know what would happen if it got chopped up or burned and she didn't really want to find out.
