This kinda boggles me from time to time. I was wondering if anyone notice Mercury's color change in her sailor fuku in the anime.
Originally her dominate color is blue (same shade as Sailor Moon's skirt) when she got her upgrade (super) I notice the blue became a shade of medium/sky blue.
Idealistically, Naoko stated her dominate color is blue, however there is many shades variations of "blue" in this world. She never really specified what "blue" variation/shade is Mercury's. We assume it's the normal blue like Sailor Moon's fuku, but after seeing her fuku in the artbook scans, and upgrade in the Dream Arc in the anime; makes me wonder if Mercury's "blue" is really medium blue/sky blue.

Mercury's colouring has always been a strange one.
Her hair! What colour is it! lol Dark blue, light blue or teal ?
Example...not the best but you can kind of see my point.

I think that her color is sort a mix of royal blue and turquoise. I also dislike how it changes color, although the glove thing bothers me even more. . . . You probably have no idea what I'm talking about. In the anime, when Mercury uses Bubble (Shabon) Spray, her glove changes color for a moment. It annoys me soooo much.

I think hers is a lighter shade of blue than Sailor Moon's.
If you look closely when they're together, you can see a difference. Same thing with Mars, you can tell Sailor Moon's bows are a lighter red when she is beside Mars.

I am the Titan Soldier of Stars and Destiny! Protector of the innocent! And invincible! SAILOR CRONUS!! Well, sure it's going to annoy people IF YOU DRAW EVERYBODY'S ATTENTION TO IT!!!
blaugh
Anyway, yeah, I kind of wondered about it myself, but then again, I cared a bit less about inconsistent details in the anime than inconsistent details in the manga. (Sailor Pluto kidnapping Hotaru... that was a bigger annoyance in the anime than little color glitches. At least Mercury's glove was a genuine mistake.) Things that bugged me in the manga were more about the issue with the comet/ ice queen from "The Lover of Princess Kaguya" and the removal of individuality in all Senshi once the Eternal fu-ku were established.
Um... the lightening of her color might be because Sailor Moon and Uranus had dark blue uniforms already, just to provide some variety.

Enemies beware-- for your fate is sealed!

@Sailor Neptune: I think her hair is more of a dark cerulean blue in the anime, and dark navy blue in the artbooks.
@Soapy-san: To be honest I never notice it, then again I don't pay attention to every little detail. It was a mistake on the colorist behalf, and this kinda thing is happens a lot in cell animation.
@Invincible Youth: Yeah I notice that too until her upgrade. I always use azure blue for my fanart since it seems fitting for Mercury then royal/dark blue for the first part. Sailor Moon's bow I think it has more of a pinkish red tone then a flat red like Sailor Mars fuku, but there is also some cases it's the same color as Mars's fuku.
@TS Sailor Cronus: Imagine having three scouts the same color fuku D: I do agree with you on the color. I know for a fact Uranus's dominate color is navy blue.

What pains me the most is Pluto's skin tone. I'm a firm believer that she is darker than the rest because in the Infinity Collection artbook, Takeuchi-sensei clearly states (in Japanese) that Lead Crow is "darker than the rest (even darker than Pluto!)"
"Darker than Pluto" implies that Pluto herself has a darker skin tone than the others.
It's also made obvious in the manga when her skin is a darker shade of gray than anyone else.

Yes she is a darker skin tone than the rest, I would say [In gaia tones] she is a Type C skin, she could go as dark as Type D possibly too but Type E is too dark.
It bothers me as well when I see people ignore her beautiful skin tone. Just like it bothers me when people give Neptune green hair.

Even more than the color of Mercury's uniform, it bugs me that she's the only one in the manga who doesn't have shoulder armor besides Pluto. She has it in the flashback to the Moon Kingdom in the Dead Moon Arc, but not in the present day until she powers up into her super form.

These changes lead me to believe that they may have adjusted her color as they went along, what with the adding of the outer senshi, most of whom have blue and/or a shade close to blue in their attire, besides Pluto. (Unless you count the Sera Myu Musicals.) Uranus has navy blue, Neptune has deep blue bows, while Saturn has a very bluish purple rather close to indigo. (In some pictures, I swear, it seems almost an actual shade of blue.) >.<
Sailor Mercury is clearly the 'true blue' of the bunch, though it makes me wonder at times whether or not her hair was meant to be a jet-black. I'm glad to see that Mercury has a blue all her own that does not conflict with Sailor Moon's deeper blue skirt color. It's a common misconception to assume that Sailor Moon's bows are red, when in fact they are a deep pink, as seen in comparison to Sailor Mars. The varying rainbow colors that Sailor Moon is eventually adorned with really help when differentiating her further from Sailor Mercury, not that her original colors, including her hair, weren't enough to differentiate her from her teammates.
It also makes me wonder what the toy manufacturers were thinking when they transformed Sailor Pluto's uniform from black to purple on certain dolls in Japan. (Which could have been just a mistake, as her whole color palette is confusing the first time you see her.) It also drives me crazy to see a Sailor Pluto with an assumed uniform color of dark green, much like her hair color. I like to think that her uniform is always black, and mostly representational of shadows (not to mention her obvious connection to the underworld), as shadows were once used by mankind to measure the passage of time with apparati like ancient wood sticks and sundials. It's a connection from her fuku to her element that I find too important to overlook. That and, I really love the black too much to see it as anything else. ^.^

I second that. I've always taken Setsuna's skin color seriously, being picky with details as I am. Naoko Takeuchi clearly stated that Setsuna is half-Romani. (Not that we should fall prey to stereotypes and skin colors.) but that's how she wants Pluto to look. Whatever Naoko-sama says, goes. * *

 "...
This is actually easily explained. The anime had so many different animators working that sometimes from episode to episode you had TOTALLY different art styles. This causes their colors to change (ex: sometimes Rei's hair is jet black, other times it has purple highlights) completely depending on who was animating that specific episode. I also notice merchandise suffers from this as well. I find it easiest to think that ALL the Sailors have different colors from one another. Which color belongs to who is really up to your preference. Just by looking at manga art you can see all the different concepts Naoko Takeuchi had, so I don't think that helped anything. Just my two cents.

I always did picture Setsuna having olive skin then the typical tan look. As for Lead Crow, since she "suppose" to have darker skin then Sestuna is hard to tell..

It also depends on how much of that Romani side shows, considering she's technically half. Instead of being entirely olive, I always picture Setsuna's complexion coupled with a slight underlying reddish hue, much like her tan in the anime.
If you look at Lead Crow next to Setsuna in the anime you can really see the difference. Lead Crow is darker than Setsuna. You can tell Lead Crow is a bit more on the orange side here. * *
