The Gothic Church - Durem

The Church of Durem is the oldest building in the downtown of the city. It was originally built as a small, Romanesque style church, and was later expanded to a larger Gothic style church.

The organ of the church was built by a world famous designer. The acoustics of the church are very good and concerts are held there often. The style emphasizes verticality and features almost skeletal stone structures with great expanses of glass, sharply pointed spires, cluster columns, flying buttresses, ribbed vaults, pointed arches using the ogive shape, and inventive sculptural detail. These features are all the consequence of a focus on large stained-glass windows that allowed more light to enter than was possible with older styles. To achieve this "light" style, flying buttresses were used as a means of support to enable higher ceilings and slender columns. The church is highly decorated with statues on the outside and painting on the inside, while also surrounded by a cemetery.

Flare flew into Durem from the Void, perching momentarily upon one of the spires of the church. Who knew where a petal might be, who knew where the chaos might strike, who knew whether Owle would still exist when it were all over.

This place was one of her favorite haunts, and so Flare began here, beginning her search of the building from the air and slowly making her way down and in.

Flare reached the bottom of the building, having circled around it several times. She pushed the heavy door open and wandered within, glad she didn't have any compulsions to stay away from holy ground.

"Hello, I'm looking for chaos, if anyone's seen any, let me know..." She smirked, bearing her two, small, fangs. If anyone were in the church praying, likely they'd dislike her for what she was doing. Not that she cared. Her hand was on the hilt of her rapier, and her right was already glowing...

The youth had been waiting, apparently, for anyone who might walk through those doors. Now that he had an audience, a sickly smile spread across his lips. Pale lips indeed, almost the same color as the rest of his pasty face. Grey-blond hair weighed limply on his head, thinning noticably for one so young. With clear blue eyes, he engaged his newly-arrived company.

"Help me." His voice was soft, but clear. Even though he was standing clear across the room, he could be heard from the door.

He grabbed for something on the side of his neck- a paper tab, it seemed. Taking hold, he began to pull. He dragged the tab horizontally, going towards his throat- the tab seemed to be connected to a strip of some sort. As he continued to pull, it became clear: this was a strip of his flesh.

Before anyone could hope to react, he had peeled the strip all the way around his neck, the flesh pulling away with a sickening schlk. "Oh." The boy's head rolled forward, then hit the ground with a dull thump.

His body followed a second later.

A thousand years ago, Flare would have thrown up at the display. Now she merely gagged, and raised her right hand toward the body.

Flames blossomed from her palm, engulfing the head and body of the boy. If it burned...and she intended to make it burn...she would later sift through the ashes to see if she could find a petal. She wasn't going to search a corpse that could easily get up and attack her.

It burned and roared, catching then the pews on flames. The few churchgoers startled and fled away from the demoness. The church was old and the wood even older. The flames leapt easily from item to item, it would quickly burn down if not stopped.

"God's wrath is upon us all!!!!!"

"Stop moaning and get some water," Flare retorted gruffly. She wasn't about to waste time saving the church...she'd donate a hefty sum of money for its restoration later.

The heat, the flames did not bother her. The moment she decreed the body sufficiently burned, she went through the ashes. If she found nothing and nothing else strange occurred, she calmly exited the church, and headed to the clock tower.

From the north Allen came, the smell of smoke quickly reaching his nose even as he came into sight of the church. And though the idea of entering a church gave him chills, due to memories, it was on fire. And so he approached. Where there was a fire, there was a cause. And he wanted to see what was going on.

Chaos. The key was chaos.

The fire was buring out of control. Luckily the church was stone so only the inside would burn. But it could spread. And there were still people running out of it, screaming and crying.

Irzael's nostrils flared at the thick smell of ash and charred flesh, "Fire?" He dashed forward, ahead of the man he had been following, to get a better look at what was going on. Irzael opened the door to the church to see flames spreading all around. He stared helplessly onward as the fires raged.

"Dammit."

Allen knew that, with a fire that big, he couldn't do much to help himself. He was a fighter, close range, with no real magic. and most definitely nothing he could do would be useful here. Except, maybe...

...he reached down and pulled out his cellphone, dialing three quick numbers and waiting for the pickup. The screams and flames would be able to be heard in the background of the call.

"Yes, 911? The Gothic Church in Durem is on fire. And judging from the way everyone around is screaming and panicking, I doubt anyone else has thought of calling here. So please, get the fire department over here before it spreads to other buildings. No, no, I don't know what caused it, I just arrived myself. Thank you, bye."

And then his phone was away, and he looked at the building. There might still be people inside...dare he risk checking?

((Flare is gone.))

The fire continued to rage. And upstairs there was movement and...what sounded like crying...

((I believe I left before you got here. I would have chosen to brush into you on my way out, but I was heading south and you came in from the north.

I've already posted my entrance at the clocktower.))

"Dammit!"

He heard the crying, saw the movement. And now, he had to do something. There was an innocent up there, and nobody else would get there in time. His scaled wings materialized, he launched himself into the air, and slammed himself through the window that seemed closest to the crying. Gaining a few scratches in the process.

And then, inside the second floor of the building, he began looking for the source of the movement and sound.
