Now, on to the magic!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The planes carrying the incoming Torbaen students arrived just as they had for decades- one right after the other, each stopping within inches of the next. There had been no stewards on board any flights, though there was a charmed lunch cart that served everyone on it's own. It was an hour before sunset when the planes began their descent, and the hills of the dry Nevada landscape came into view. Sequoia cacti studded the hills, as did several variety of desert wildflowers. The wildflowers, in fact, were charmed to alert the school authorities as to any wandering muggles. They did not react to wizards, of course, so the planes' passage onto the school grounds went quite smoothly.
As the steps from the planes lowered, Groundskeeper Ash Jefferson and Caretaker Laura Bernette awaited the students. Bernette, as usual, charmed the tumbleweeds into carriages to carry the students off to the school and their Welcome Feast, and tried to enforce a silence between First Year students and any older students, as it was her belief that the mystery of Torbaen should always be upheld. Of course, most of the older students liked to watch the awe on the First Years' faces or had more sociallizing to do with their friends and older students any how, and could care less.
The first of the Tumbleweed Carriages, able to hold up to four students apiece, was ready to depart immediately. Bernette was already working on a second, when Ash started calling for the new students.
"Can I have all of the First Years join me, please? First Years or transfers, over here?" Ash's height helped, of course, being almost 6 foot tall herself, but honestly, she had a voice that could carry, too. She seemed like an amazon woman, especially among the youngest and therefore shortest students. She motioned for the students to join her further back from the Tumbleweed Carriages, so that she could explain the ground rules for the evening, and allow the others to set up in the Hall before their own arrival.
As the plane began to touch down, n** grinned. To her house elf Damply, she said, "Uncle Arthur would love the American's way to get to their school."
"Mistress has said so several times," Damply replied, holding her bat-like ears over her face. "Please tell Damply when it is over?"
"I'm sorry Damply," n** said, putting an arm around Damply's shivering frame. "I forgot you were afraid of heights. I'm afraid I take after Uncle Arthur more than I thought. We're nearly there."
From when she had boarded and throughout the entire trip, n** had been aware of the students that had been staring at her. Hm. Must be what old Moony felt when he was on the train with the rest of us. Should've taken a page out of his book and feigned sleep.
Damply squeaked in terror as the wheels of the plane bumped against the tarmac and then squealed as the plane rolled to a stop.
"It's quite all right Damply," n** said, soothing the house elf. "The ride is over and we're here. Once the plane comes to a stop, be a dear and take my bags to my room and then report to the kitchens to assist--"
"Excuse us," a voice asked from the seat in front of n**. A twin pair of heads were staring at n** over the backs of the seats. The one on the right said, "We're Andie and Angie Parkins. Are you that Nipatone Kiothepa?"
Gesturing for Damply to remain quiet, n** said, "I am not Nipatone Kiothepa, no." n** bit the inside of her cheek to avoid laughing as the twin girls sat back down and started arguing. The first day of class is going to be fun.
As the students started filing out of the plane, n** walked over to Laura, as she recognized her from when n** herself attended Torbaen. With a flourish that caught more than one eye, n** bowed and said, "Laura! Darling! It's been far too long. I'd stay and chat about old times but it looks like you've got your hands full. As I'm feeling a wee bit squeamish about riding in one of the Tumbleweeds after being cooped up in an airplane for several hours, I think I'll walk."
Knowing full well it could get her in trouble with the headmaster, n** transformed into her white Bengal tiger form and trotted off to the school to reach it ahead of the students.
----
Jabbing her twin in the ribs, Angie pointed at n** and said, "She LIED!"
Andie frowned. "You can't be sure."
"Clipped British accent," Rhi said. She had been walking next to the twins. "Blonde hair, orange eyes, white tiger Animagus. I do believe that was the famed Nipatone Kiothepa."
"She says she wasn't," Andie said.
"That does not mean anything," Steven said, taking stride on the other side of the twins. "Also, we may be mispronouncing her name."
"You're still here Lamberty?" Ryu growled from behind the four. "I thought you would've died over the summer."
"Yes, Malfoy, I am," Steven sighed turning to look at Ryu. "I'm stronger than I look."
"If you keep looking at his face, Steven, it COULD kill you," Rhi said, turning Steven around. "Let's just go."
Shoving by Rhi, Ryu deliberately knocked Rhi into the other three. Noticing that her glasses had fallen off, Ryu quickly glanced around to make sure he wasn't being watched by the two teachers before stepping on Rhi's glasses. Laughing, he walked off.
"Jackass," Rhi grumbled, carefully searching the ground for her glasses.
"H-Here," Wulfric said, holding the shattered glasses to Rhi. "They're...um...broke."
"Thank you," Rhi said, peering through the glasses. Seeing that they were useless, she sighed. "You and the girls best go to the tall woman calling for first years. Steven, are you okay?"
"Yeah," Steven said as he and the twins climbed to their feet. Helping Rhi up, he said, "Surprisingly anyway. I'm no good at fixing glasses. Maybe once we get to the school, Nurse Kuptig can fix them."
"I suppose so," Rhi said. Realizing he was putting an arm around her to guide her to the carriages, she said, "No, don't help Steven. I was holding Ferny for most of the flight and I don't want you to get sick."
Laura smiled and opened her mouth to reply to n** before she realized that the flamboyant witch was already on her way. She had half a mind to remind her that there would be no running in the school, but she shut her mouth quite quickly. After all, the last thing she needed to do was scold a teacher in front of other students. She made a mental note to talk to her after the ceremony this evening. She continued to charm Tumbleweed carriages, and went back to being thankful that the students all seemed to be suffering from mild jet-lag, and were not being impatient.
Rosie laughed at the pile-up that Ryu had caused. Her groupies also giggled, before they all moved on. After all, in her opinion, Rosie's approval of Ryu's prank was the best thing that was going to happen to him this school year- unless he got really, really lucky. She didn't glance behind her as she and her other Paytah friends quickly moved to the head of the quickly forming line for tumbleweed carriages, and boarded and left.
Martin sighed. And he wasn't sure it was from relief to be away from his older sister, or to be off the plane. He had heard the name Malfoy mentioned as he was descending the steps, and he had almost wanted to go back home after all. But his family... this was his best chance at escaping them, after all. So Martin quietly walked toward the tall dark lady calling for the new students, and waited.
Manuel got off the plane and had a look around. He had missed this place. Oh, so much. He smiled, and looked around to see if anyone needed any help. So far, Ash had a small group of first years slowly gathering around her, and the other students were making their way to the carriages. He wanted to be helpful, so he lingered a bit.
Eric waited until the plane was almost empty. After all, he really didn't want Bart to get overexcited, and Bart's travel cage was, as usual, his carry-on. Eric pulled open the compartment above and slowly pulled out the cage. It was a circular box, only about 10 inches deep with a two foot diameter, brown with five holes in the top. If one were to place their hand on the top, the holes would most likely match with the fingertips, and, also, let Bart out of his travel cage. Bart had a larger cage amongst Eric's belongings- a five foot tall, two and a half foot deep, four foot wide monstrosity that Eric had (thankfully) learned a wonderful charm for last year that allowed him to shrink it's size by over 90%. The cage was a gift from his Aunt, and the charm was something Professor Shepherd and he had worked out last year after the Care of Magical Creatures teacher and he had had a long talk about Bart.
Still, Eric was uneasy leaving the plane with a cage so small being the only thing between his over-excited pet and a slew of first year students. He exited the plane quickly... which was rather a mistake, as he tripped and fell and Bart's cage came sliding to a stop near some other students, the lid ajar by at least an inch.
Ell got off her plane, which was still quite full of loud students and quite a lot of hustle and bustle, and she made her way over to the loud black witch and practically planted herself by her side. She tried not to look worried, but who here wasn't? She smiled to some of the other unfamiliar faces, hoping their reciprocal smiles would ease her anxiety. She noticed an interesting woman turn into a tiger and run away, and wished she could summon the courage to ask about that. Instead, she gawked. What an awesome animagus!
Chase whistled as he plopped his wizard hat onto his head and left the air conditioned plane. What a mistake that was! It was hot as... well, a desert out here! He pulled the silly thing off in disgust. What the heck was this, anyways, a joke? Actual, magical people who just managed to dress enough like witches and wizards from old stories so that wearing the costumes would make them look like more like some cosplay rejects than functioning sorcerers? What a lark!
Chase heard someone mutter "Jackass", and turned around quickly. Seriously? Was that an acclimated wizard, or someone like him- totally out of his element? He was starting to realize that unless a lot of slang and hobbies and such crossed over from non-magical to magical, he was going to feel quite lost. For now, he ignored the lady calling for noobs. He went over towards the girl who had said Jackass, but seeing as she was being flocked by a whole bunch of guys, he kind of stood back for the moment.
Looking down at the box that slid to a stop near her, Angie bent down to pick it up. "Hey you dropped your--ERMAHGERDSPYDA!" [Note, that is said excitedly rather than from being afraid. Also, it's partly twin-speak]
Turning to look at her twin and what was in her hand, Andie said excitedly, "EXCELLENT idea, Ang!" As she didn't see where it came from, she said, "Anyone drop a spider?"
Awkwardly scratching his arm, Wulfric walked over to the large black woman. He kept his eyes downcast to avoid the possibility of causing a fight.
"Are you sure?" Steven asked. "You're blind as a bat--"
"Only because my glasses are broke," Rhi said. Putting her hands out in front of her as she took a tentative step forward--in the opposite direction of the carriages--she simultaneously slapped Chase's face and shoved Manuel. Pulling her hands back so they were against her shoulders, she said, "Oh crap! Sorry, sorry! No glasses means I can't see who I hit or shoved or whatever. Sorry!"
Katherine yawned and stretched, realizing most everyone was off the plane already, and all of them first years. She sighed, and reached up for her carry-on; which was cage. Inside, a loud, whiny meow emitted as Squiggles woke up. He had been noisy throughout most of the flight until he had curled up and gone to sleep. She carried him off the plane before opening the cage to let him scramble out onto her shoulder, where he perched carefully. As usual, his head whipped around, wary of all the first years he didn't know. Kitty collapsed the box the same way one would with a cardboard box, and began folding it up. The enchantment made it stay the same thickness as she folded it as easily as a piece of paper. Finally, she slipped the small square into the pouch sewn into the inside of her robe. Ahead, someone tripped. Was that- well, she recognized him, but she had forgotten his name. She approached, and noticed a lack of spider. She only knew the boy because no one could forget a spider like Bart.
"Where's...oh," she said, following his gaze to the stranger holding his little cage. She tried to recognize her, though she was terrible at remembering people. Who had Bart?
PostPosted: Thu Aug 30, 2012 12:08 pm
Eric winced as he heard squealing. It was inevitable now- the screaming the terror, the stampede... but... he opened his eyes. He heard someone nearby start to ask him where Bart was, and he followed Katherine's gaze to the two first years excitedly holding Bart's unsecured cage.
"He's mine!" Eric said in a hurry. If they didn't realize what they had- though he thought that high pitched run-on exclamation had included the word spider- they would soon cause mass hysteria. Eric picked himself up, not even bothering to dust the sand off his robes, and winced again as he felt the scrape on his knee as he walked quickly toward the... twins? "Please, please don't let him out just yet." Eric said in a hurry. "He likes the a-" he paused mid-sentence, since he could already see two long furry legs sticking out of the cage, "-ttention." he finished degradingly, with a partial sigh. Bart was not going to co-operate; he could see that now. He continued toward the first year twins at a more comfortable pace, and already an apology on his face. Couldn't he go one year without Bart being the first thing anyone noticed about him?
Bart, on the other hand, was thrilled to be back. While he didn't truly care for deserts as much as, say, forests, due to the lack of places to hide and hop around, he did love places full of people, especially young ones! He had felt the weightlessness accompanied by his being dropped, along with the slide across the desert runway. And he was more than happy to help nudge the lid aside to get a good look around. He heard the excited reaction to someone having found him, though he was perplexed when the same voice came from two different places. Still, he stuck two legs out, eager to keep someone from simply closing the basket-cage again, and to see what kinds of people were here to visit this year. He heard Eric, and knew that his master didn't like him making scenes. But... he just wanted to make friends!
Manuel regained his balance and turned to see a now-blind Rhi. Second year, Odahingum, he remembered. "Where are your glasses?" he asked, confused, though he realized, what with Steven right there, it was something of a moot point; obviously she lost or broke them. He looked at Steven instead. "You grab one arm?" he asked, ready to grab her other arm and help lead her like an invalid or a prisoner to the tumbleweeds.
Chase was more than startled by being slapped. He was dumbfounded. The other guy this chick had managed to crash into just now was trying to control the situation, and Chase was just left stunned.
"Did anyone get the license plate of the car that hit me?" he said jokingly. After all, if you couldn't laugh it off.... Still, he had been hoping to find out how alien wizards and witches really were. Apparently, they could at least be as clumsy as any normal people he knew. He looked around to see if anyone else was having similar issues, and saw an older boy picking himself up off the ground. Ok. Normal people it was, then.
Ellpha made her way over to the tall woman calling for new students, and stood next to a thin boy with blond hair. She hated that her hair made her stand out, so she said nothing. People often assumed that a girl with green hair would be... outgoing or adventurous. Well, she wasn't. And this whole thing was intimidating. She waited to be told what to do and where to go for now. She wanted to explore... but maybe later.
With most of the carriages charmed, and less than half of the ones for the older students already on their way, Mrs. Bernette needed to get the students going. She disliked delays and tardiness, and she really wasn't about to tolerate it on the first day.
"Returning students, you need to board the carriages and get on to the school. Quickly, now, but in an orderly fashion." she paused. "They will leave without you, and dinner will not wait either."
Ash smirked at Bernette's impatience. Waiting a moment after her colleague's announcement, Ash called out over the crowd. "I need First Year students over here immediately, please." She consulted her parchment- there were no transfers on the list this year. "New students over here. We must stay together." After all, the path they would take to the compound was slightly different, took longer, and she had a few things to say to them, as well.
Glancing around at Eric, Angie looked at her twin and issued a series of chirps followed by a wolf whistle, it was part of their secret twin language. Returning the wolf whistle followed by a slightly different series of chirps, Andie nodded. The two looked at Eric and grinned.
Handing Eric the opened box, Angie said, "A very interesting friend you have there, pal. My sister and I would love to discuss...a proposition...later about his capabilities with you."
"Yes," Andie said. "The two old crones sound like they're getting angry. And I don't want to quite miss dinner."
Together, the twins said to Bart, "Goodbye, little one! Maybe we'll see you later!" before hurrying over to Ash. With as much flourish in their bow as n** had shown earlier, they said in unison, "Andie and Angie, reporting for duty, ma'am!"
Glancing up at the twins, Wulfric cracked a grin. Those two were funny.
"I know that voice, why do I know that voice?" Rhi said.
"Manuel was the first one," Steven said. "A first year was the second one."
"Oh. ... OH!" Rhi said, her face going red. "Steven's allergic to my owl and I had been holding him for most of the flight and Steven may pick up on the dander and get sick and have to go see the nurse and I don't want that to happen because of me--
"You're rambling," Steven said, chuckling. Glancing at Ash and Bernette as they made their announcements, he looked at Chase and said, "Nice to meet you. You should probably get going. It's bad enough that Mrs. Bernette's getting angry already but let's not make Ms. Jefferson angry too."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2012 10:43 pm
Eric was flushing furiously as the twins actually handed him back Bart without freaking out. "Sure... of course." he said lamely as the two ran off for Ash's first years trip. Looking down at his friend's cage, he whispered fervently, "That is, if you can behave enough to play with others this year?"
To which Bart withdrew his legs from out of the cage, agreeing to let the night pass without screaming children. Stampedes weren't his thing after all.
Eric turned back towards the tumbleweeds and tried to gather his thoughts back in order before getting in the line to get on a carriage.
Manuel nodded, not quite realizing that Rhi probably couldn't see him. He then quickly explained. "I see. Steven, I think I will have to escort Rhi myself this time. For your sake."
And with that, he got Rhi moving toward the tumbleweed carriages as carefully yet quickly as he dared. He heard Steven apologizing to a first year, and he totally agreed. While Mrs. Bernette was almost always on edge, Ms. Jefferson hardly ever was, and they didn't need to change that now.
Chase nodded. "All... right. Um, nice to meet you Steven. I'm Chase. See you around then?" He meandered towards the tall dark lady, not anxious to become one in the crowd yet again. He felt like he was often lost in crowds.
Ellpha also noticed the hyper-esque twins that the boy next to her was now grinning at. Some times, she wished she could be more outgoing like that. Get herself noticed. And not for the green hair. She hoped that maybe she could get out of her shell a little bit more here. If she was really lucky, maybe someone would try an experiment on her hair again- maybe turn it something other than green. Then she would feel like a whole person, not a made-up character.
Trying lamely to hide her furious blush behind her hair by keeping her head down, Rhi said as she was led to the carriages, "Th-thank you Manuel..."
"Indeed," Steven said. "Enjoy the last leg of the trip." Turning, he followed along behind Manuel and Rhi.
----
Slowing to a trot, n** transformed into her human form. Looking over her shoulder, she saw that the students--
"Merlin's beard!" Austin exclaimed as he came around the corner in time to see n** transform. "What an Animagus form!"
Turning to look to see who was talking, n** grinned. Hugging him, she said, "Shephard! It's good to see you again, old friend!"
In a rough laugh that was more bark than actual laughter, Austin said, "Aye and you as well! I am very glad Eugene thought to write to you."
"Yes," n** said as the two turned to go inside. "Although I expect I'll be answering more questions than asking them for the first few weeks."
"And I'll be doing some of that m'self," Austin grinned as they entered the castle. "Though I won't bother you about it. You well know my door's always open--perhaps we can have a firewhiskey while you tell me all about England when you feel up to it."
"You remind me of a teacher and friend I made," n** said, deflecting the invention for the moment. "The two of you would get along smashingly."
Mrs. Bernette was hurrying the last of the students into the line for the carriages before making a small one for herself. There should be plenty for everyone, and she certainly wasn't going to allow herself to be the last staff member there. Welcome Feasts were one of the most exciting of the year. Not that Laura ever really outwardly showed excitement. She climbed into her own single-person tumbleweed and made one last announcement before she took off for the castle.
"Remember, the carriages and the feast will not wait on you. And curfew- as always- will be strictly enfooooorced." The last word being practically sang to the students in something of an excited tone was less than jovial when coming from the one person most notable for administering justice on matters of curfew and whatnot. But Mrs. Bernette seemed pretty happy about the whole thing, and was smiling as she left for the Hall.
Manuel smirked a little. Rhi's bashfulness was endearing at the moment. He helped her up into one of the available carriages now that Mrs. Bernette was on her way- he noticed that last year she hadn't waited for them either. Like she was waiting to pounce on them in the school. He sighed.
"Your carriage awaits, milady." Manuel said, holding her by the arm and putting one foot onto the carriage in order to steady it so that Rhi could climb in.
Eric got into a carriage quickly after Mrs. Bernette left. What a pill. She absolutely hated Bart, too. She'd petitioned the Headmaster last year to not allow Eric's pet to return this year, and from what he'd heard, it was the one time Headmaster McArnold had argued with her in the last decade. He really hoped that it was not a slim victory for him and his tarantula. Soon enough, however, he and a few other students were on their way to the feast.
The cool thing about leaving for the feast as a second year or above was that they took a shortcut; the Great Hall was almost directly North of them, and their tumbleweeds easily traversed the desert ground without having to stay on a trail. the first years, however, were carried down the road and up to the front of Torbaen, where they could get a decent view of the compound as well as the Hall to the right and the stables to the left, and all the sprawling hills behind it.
As Ash finally ushered some of the first years into carriages, she explained simply; "You will be taking the scenic route. You'll head directly to the front of Torbaen, the better to become acquainted with the layout of your new home for the next ten months." she paused and smiled. "I'll be bringing up the rear. So, as soon as your carriage comes to a stop, exit calmly and enter the double doors and wait for me there. I will be bringing up the rear, and will lead you to the Hall from there."
She smiled, and started to help first years climb into the wobbly carriages.
"Hold on to your seats, now. They might be a tad prickly, but bouncing is much, much worse."
Professor Belakhdar waited patiently outside the south hallway leading into the Hall. The majority of the students would be entering in through the stairwell entrances and skipping the school proper until after the feast, but she assumed they knew their way around, and that the new students would not. She clicked her tongue in frustration. It didn't help that she didn't always like the things Ms. Jefferson would tell the impressionable first years about the compound before they even got a chance to get sorted. The last thing they needed was to be scared by monster stories or overly excited by rumors of veins of gold beneath the compound when they had to stand at the totem. Those kinds of extreme reactions would completely throw off the sorting process, after all. Would make it ultimately useless. She wouldn't stand for it. So she waited as patiently as she could so that she could ensure that the first years were properly primed for being sorted.
When the plane was mostly empty, Morgan got to her feet and walked to the exit--all while reading a book explaining the history of NARM. As she had always been a bookworm--more so since finding out she was a witch (and how the other kids teased her by calling her Morgan la Fay when they found THAT out), she exited the plane and managed to traverse her way over to the tall woman yelling for first years despite having the book in her face.
"That is some AWESOME hair," Angie exclaimed as Morgan approached.
"How do you get it to do that?" Andie asked.
Looking over the top of her book, Morgan said, "I've always been able to do it."
Stowing the book under her arm, Morgan carefully sat down on one of the seats in the carriage.
"T-thank you," Rhi said as Manuel helped her into the carriage.
"See you guys at the castle," Steven said, getting into another carriage.
----
Reaching the great hall, n** and Austin broke off to take their respective seats. To n**'s delight, she was going to be sitting next to an old friend of hers. Hurrying over, n** said, "Still talking to yourself old friend?"
Twitching her mouth, Kyra, "Are YOU still getting into trouble?"
"Define trouble," n** grinned.
"Look in a dictionary, it has your picture next to it," Kyra replied, laughing. "So how are you enjoying being back?"
"Quite well," n** said. "Truth be told it's only my second day back in the States."
Kitty watched as the boy ran off to collect his spider. She sighed loudly, and trudged on, keeping a hand on Squiggles in case he tried to run off. She easily blended into the crowd, wishing, as she had last year, and the year before that, that she could actually make some friends. Unfortunately, most animals she came in contact with could not talk, and didn't exactly make the best of friends. You weren't allowed to take wild animals to the movies or to public parks. Kitty waited for a few boys to assist some poor blind girl into a carriage, deciding it was as good as any. At least she recognized someone, whether or not she really knew Steven too well.
Headmaster McArnold gave a nod to n** as she entered the Hall and sat down among the staff. He had faith that she would do well this year, despite how passingly he actually knew her. But now, except for the staff escorting the students and Professor Belakhdar, the Staff was all present. He tapped his wand on the table once, and glasses of Apple Scider appeared in front of all the Staff.
"Here's to another brilliant year!" he said, raising his glass in a toast. He usually toasted the staff sometime between their arrival and the arrival of the students. He knew toasting them in front of the students only ever produced a groan loud enough to spill everyone's Scider.
Sally Miller smiled at the toast, still happy to be working here, and even happier that she wasn't the newest staff member. The infamous Niphaphone Keophonthepha was here, too. Sally was in awe of the presence of this one woman, and was seriously considering trying to become her best friend.
Spotting Kitty looking at him, Steven waived. "Hello, Kitty. I see you have Squiggles, I hope you don't mind if I keep my distance. She could send me into an asthma attack."
-----
"Cheers!" n** said to McArnold's toast, raising her own glass. "I would like to thank you again, Eugene, for inviting me back. To the rest of you, I am honored to meet you all and hope you'll call me n** instead of trying to pronounce my nearly unpronounceable name. I'm sure we'll get along smashingly!"
"She's not drunk," Kyra said, laughing. "She's just always been this way."
